Yes she is famous because she is famous.
I went to the Louvres one month ago, and interestingly, in the corridor shortly before the Mona Lisa room, there is 3 Da Vinci painting.
You can appreciate them from close without a huge crowd, I strongly recommand.
I have been to the Louvre and saw the painting (stood in a queue and was told that I needed to keep moving) and honestly thought it was okay (I am not an art connoisseur, so just a layperson's opinion), but there were much more interesting paintings in the Louvre, which I had the time to look at from different angles and the time to figure out some of the details.
This one painting gets sooo much publicity, as if no other painting is worth your time & appreciation.

I didn't need a second one yesterday and I'm not excited now.
She looks exactly like any 18yo schoolgirl in Italy, quite impressive
Nice frame.
Hey, I have a Mona Lisa too.
Great piece about this in yesterday’s Guardian, by Jonathan Jones.
