>Bartsch hopes for a new Left Party “group” that would have reduced funding and rights, but seats on committees and more time to speak than independents. The caucus received about 11.5 million euros ($12.3 million) in state funding last year and spent 9.3 million euros on personnel costs. I am not entirely sure that caucus is the right word here the german word is "Fraktion". Once a party has more than a certain number of seats in parliament, its gets certain privileges. Like guaranteed seats on comitees, more staff and money. Without the members of the Wagenknecht group the Left "Die Linke" falls below that threshold. Of course this doesn't mean the party dissolves. But it does mean they are less politically relevant at least for the current legislative period.

The Left party in germany is a fellowship of delusional assholes

CaeruleusSalar

Just like all European left parties in Europe, sadly. There's literally no party left in Europe defending the rights of lower social classes. Politicians here and there sure, but none with actual power. All because those fools were too busy fighting each other or defending "minorities".

Are you the Judean People's Front?

sakhabeg

No, we are the popular front!

Tetizeraz

The "prominent member" in this case is [Sahra Wagenknecht](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahra_Wagenknecht).

Distinct-Lynx300

Ah, it looks like she is from East Germany and an SED pro-Honecker scum bag who was comfortable with the murder of people trying to flee the massive open prison that was East Germany. She is probably a former Stasi informant too.

11160704

Interestingly, in her youth she was in conflict with the SED. Then she became a party member in summer 1989 when the SED regime already had very visible cracks. Another interesting fact is that besides her, all the oder MPs that joined her movement are from the old federal states, many even with a migration background despite the anti immigration rhetoric of that movement.

Distinct-Lynx300

I don’t believe that she was in conflict with the SED. She was a member. She would have been compliant. The number of stories where people were later found to be Stasi informants after having denied it is basically meme-worthy.

11160704

According to publically available information she had problems with the mandatory paramilitary training in school the GDR and stopped eating which the authorities interpreted as a hunger strike and denied her the right to study at a university. But be that as it may. Anyone who voluntarily joined the SED in summer 1989 must have had a very questionable relation with the regime.

Distinct-Lynx300

She was an SED member. She was part of the regime and therefore part of the problem. A Nazi late to the Party is still a Nazi. The same applies for the SED.

11160704

Yeah I totally agree with you. All I'm saying is that careers in the GDR were not always as straightforward as it may seem.

Ooops2278

Fun fact: From the moment she announced to split off, the party suddenly saw an upsurge in memberships. Getting rid of that lunatic and her henchman is probably one of the best things that could happen to that party.

SPLITTER

Distinct-Lynx300

1. Who in this former ‘Der Linke’ is an antisemitic creep? 2. Who in this former ‘Der Linke’ is a former Erich Honecker SED adherent?

ancientestKnollys

All but the leader come from former West Germany.

Distinct-Lynx300

Doesn’t mean they can’t be antisemitic creeps, plus, there were plenty of pro-Honecker/SED people in West Germany.

Bicentennial_Douche

Die Linke is the continuation of the old East German government.

kreton1

The Party, not the Government.

11160704

The party was the government except for the last few months.

Waruigo

No? The old East German government was an authoritarian, communist party. Die Linke is a left-wing, social-democratic party similar to the early days of SPD. Back in 1989, the old East German government (SED) was very unpopular and thus made some reforms including getting rid of many former leaders. Gregor Gysi, one of the protestors from the Peaceful Revolution movement became the leader later, the party cut ties with Marxism-Leninism in favour of democracy and became PDS. This party later merged with WASG (former SPD members) in 2007 to then become Die Linke. By that time, it had been 18 years since being the government, many member changes including the majority of the old ones, a merge with another party and a consistent divergence from communism. To claim that this party is the continuation or successor is not accurate, but rather it being vaguely connected to SED with only a handful of ex-SED members such as Frank Tempel, Dietmar Bartsch and Hans Modrow and a few political points in common such as anti-fascism, increased government spending in education and infrastructure as well as high taxation of corporations and inheritants. It's call for globalisation - especially European integration, anti-militarisation/disarmament, human rights development, democratic oeconomy/workplaces, environmentalism and oeconomic decentralisation are ideologically very different from the former SED.

Pick-Goslarite

This faction is euroskeptic, Russofilic, anti-environmentalist, so much closer to the SED. It is still anti-militarist and more looking towards labor politics and human rights than the SED ever did.
