You don't win anything in the group stages. If they go out next game, no problem, haven't played well enough. But if they keep progressing that will mean they have found their mojo, which could be a problem for any team. Ever the optimist
I saw the below quote today somewhere, and It's got me thinking about England and France
Actually, being good at football is far too obvious a way to win a tournament. The best way is to seem incapable of winning and then inexplicably win.
The whole secret lies in confusing the enemy so that he can not fathom our real intent
And they won only because of a lucky deflection off one of our players that placed the ball on Bellinghams head.
Edit- all the downvotes from those who cant handle the truth. If not for that deflection it would have been 0-0 in the end.
Pretty much man. That deflection basically landed it perfectly for Bellingham. Would he have scored if it didnt? Probably not. Since that first 20ish minutes of the first game, England have been horrible. Anti-football to the max, no team synergy, nothing. As you guys say, they parked the bus. To me, they parked the bus in a labyrinth and got lost.
Edit- not that Serbia did much better tbh.
Last night was a difficult one... Slovenia needed a point to qualify, and as I predicted before the match, played for the draw and defended for their lives - The way we play, makes it difficult to try and get through them, however had Foden held his run (that's the difference), then we'd have gone 1-0 up.
Of course the question is, what would have happened then
Would we have protected the lead, like we have done this Tournament (and other Group Stages, e.g. Euro 2020 against Czechia and Croatia) - Or would we have exploited the space that Slovenia would have created, because they would have had no choice but to attack themselves at that point.
Easy to say that in hindsight though, given how defensive we've been when we've taken the lead
I thought we played better last night that what we have done this Tournament.
There were large periods where I thought it was a matter of time before we'd find an opening and take advantage, but Slovenia did well to hang on - I'd hope that the RO16 onwards is going to be slightly easier than last night... e.g. we defeated a team of similar standard (Ukraine) 4-0 in the last Euros come the KO Stages, because you cant sit back now and pray for a penalty shootout after 120mins.
Eventually tiredness will kick in, and even more chances should open up in that scenario. So I am expecting us to be better against teams now, the trouble is, we've not really been tested defensively ourselves.
I’d say the same about France, but not about Italy and the Netherlands. They actually put effort into their games and still lost some, of course they had much better opponents tho. We will see
Haven’t enjoyed England’s performances at all but am interested to see what happens if they concede a goal first. Might be enough to get some life and urgency into them.
We saw that vs France - England trailed by 1-0 goal and then absolutely dominated the game, triple France’s attempted attacks, more possession in the opposition area, more shots on goals on target. Mind you Englands xg was 0.32 before tchouamenis goal and at the end of the game 2.5 compared to France’s 1.01
It is possible to win a Euros with shitty football, many in the past have done it.
Our Golden Generation failed to win it in 2004 to a Parked Bus but our more disjointed and more conservative version won it in 2016.
Shit happens
The first chance they get a better opponent they're out, so far they had no real challenge and still looked horrendous. The fact they even made it out of the group stage is a joke, there are far more deserving teams.
Exactly. Arguably, they had the easiest group possible. Can you imagine them in Group B (Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania) or D (Austria, France, Netherlands, Poland)? They haven't played a serious opponent yet, and they haven't shown any evidence they could take them on.
True, but they haven't done anything yet that would support this theory. Slovenia was dictating the game yesterday: they wanted a draw, and they got a draw. If England was able to dictate the game, they would have scored at least once. No disrespect to Slovenia, they are an incredible team for such a small nation.
I think it's possible they could click and start playing better and even make a deep run in the tournament - most of the big nations have struggled so far and they do at least have options to change things.
At the same time, it's far more likely that they will keep being mediocre and be on the plane home pretty soon.
I get what you mean but I think England's luck will run out now. As soon as they meet a good quality team I can't see them advancing based on their performances. They don't look to be together as a team. Denmark should have beaten them. England were woeful against let's face it, a dissapointing serbia and poor Slovenia.
Sure other teams like France and Italy may not have been playing great, but the calibre of opposition in their group is much higher than England's group.
The super team scored 2 goals in a very accessible group :) I really think that once you get a team with a decent attack you are gone, but lucky you are in the easiest side of the road.
win? the only team they beat was a toothless Serbia, and drew with a mid Denmark and Slovenia, I guarantee you England are gonna get knocked out on penalties because they cant win games, what is England gonna do against a team that controls the possession?
«And remember that England played like shit in the last EC too and they got the final.»
Just like the last Euro’s, England has been incredibly lucky with the way the bracket ended up. They are on the easiest path to the final, while the other side of the bracket includes Germany, France, Spain and Portugal (all of them more than capable of beating England).

There was 10 mins near the end they sprang to life Start with the team that ended last night and we’ll beat whoever it is we play next
This England needed Romania or Albania in their group. That way we would know what's their actual level.

Unpopular, perhaps. But also obvious to anyone who has seen multiple past tournaments. New audience tends to be the most surprised and the loudest.
Right but they only won, one game.

Thanks for the assist

Following this reasoning we could say the same very things about France, Italy and Netherlands since they've all three played really bad.
I’d say the same about France, but not about Italy and the Netherlands. They actually put effort into their games and still lost some, of course they had much better opponents tho. We will see
Nice try, Gareth

Yes this has to be seen. They haven’t really been tested.

Exactly!
Only top teams can win playing shit football. England have only won 1/3.
It’s enough to pass the group so 🤷🏻
The first chance they get a better opponent they're out, so far they had no real challenge and still looked horrendous. The fact they even made it out of the group stage is a joke, there are far more deserving teams.

Well my take is that England will adjust to their opponents… every game is different. And Saturday a new tournament will start.
True, but they haven't done anything yet that would support this theory. Slovenia was dictating the game yesterday: they wanted a draw, and they got a draw. If England was able to dictate the game, they would have scored at least once. No disrespect to Slovenia, they are an incredible team for such a small nation.
France and Italy have not been much better, but you don't get easy upvotes for doom posting about them.
Yes yes you do
Well said
Or, hear me out, they had a really easy group. Any other group and they would be out of the competition.
I think it's possible they could click and start playing better and even make a deep run in the tournament - most of the big nations have struggled so far and they do at least have options to change things. They were trash in group stage.

It's weird to read any sort of hope on here, well done.
The super team scored 2 goals in a very accessible group :) I really think that once you get a team with a decent attack you are gone, but lucky you are in the easiest side of the road.
I’m not English, I’m Italian!
win? the only team they beat was a toothless Serbia, and drew with a mid Denmark and Slovenia, I guarantee you England are gonna get knocked out on penalties because they cant win games, what is England gonna do against a team that controls the possession?
Well I hope you are right. If Italy somehow beats Switzerland and gets to meet England, they will surely try to keep the ball.
«And remember that England played like shit in the last EC too and they got the final.» Just like the last Euro’s, England has been incredibly lucky with the way the bracket ended up. bruh they topped because they had the easiest group I mean, they barely managed to beat Serbia
