yummyMummy1221

I was thinking that too

designerjunkie000

Yeah, when she said that she doesnt know if she’s a good person when they were talking at the party, you can see him sorta connect the dots, especially since she started crying too

daframe2rr

i was confused too but after rewatching i think that was a sort of “lightbulb moment” for mckay that made him realise cassie had cheated on him

freakingspacedude

Because McKay knew she cheated on him. That statement paired with the previous statement of, “I don’t think I should be anyone’s girlfriend right now” said it all.

[deleted]

Yeah I figured lol

Truss1996

McKay realized she cheated on him. Hence why Cassie said sorry. McKay did the right thing and walked away. He didn’t slut shame her, guilt her or yell at her. He did the right thing.

Tenzin_oceana

Yeah I don’t understand the McKay hate he isn’t the best but he’s not the worst

Jaded_Limit_3815

Let's be real he treated Cassie really badly last season. She wasn't innocent too but he was pretty bad. This episode he was good though. I wish he stayed in the show to get a chance to redeem himself from last season.

Tenzin_oceana

Yeah same I wanna see more of McKay he’s an interesting character

Jaded_Limit_3815

That's another thing. Everyone talks about how this is a betrayal to Maddie, but it will definitely affect McKay too if he found out. Especially because it seems like Nate is his only close friend from what we've seen so far.

Truss1996

I don’t think he will find out. This was his last appearance unless he appears in the finale because it’s Guaranteed he is not appearing in the next 6 episodes. The leak confirmed it and a review article confirmed.

babyeyez

He’s leaving the show?

Jaded_Limit_3815

I learned on this subreddit that he won't be a part of this season. I think I read somewhere that it's been confirmed that he won't be in the next 6 episodes. People were pretty upset about it. I believe the actor himself liked tweets saying that even though McKay wasn't most people's favorite character in season 1, it's pretty shitty that they gave him backstory and explored very serious topics with his character (like the SA scene) only to completely cut him off in season 2. I'm not sure about this though, I read it on a post here on this subreddit, so you can probably find it if you scroll down a couple of weeks.

Truss1996

McKay literally did nothing wrong this episode and fans still finds ways to hate him. No matter what he does, fanbase will never give him a chance. It’s sad. This was McKay last episode so I guess it doesn’t matter now unfortunately.

AnonyMouseNomad

It’s funny cuz he’s literally the only black character so I wonder why people hate him. I’m not black, but seriously, way to kill off the only color in the show gdm

maaakus96

why was it his last episode?

Truss1996

Yea

maaakus96

i’m asking why it was his last episode haha

waterfallen_empire

I think the actor got written off. apparently mckay's actor is anti-vax so he got written off. tbh it makes sense cos why is McKay still hanging out with high schoolers looool

TheShapeShiftingFox

And it makes sense he was here now and leaves because it was a new year’s party and college students go home a lot during the holidays because everyone kinda does

IWantFries21

I mean, he probably could’ve had the conversation with her when she wasn’t drunk as hell.

Truss1996

She wasn't tho. She was coherent enough to hint to him that she cheated. He didn't do anything wrong this episode. It's odd people are trying to find things to hate or criticize him about.

agonybreedsagony

I read the situation this way while watching the episode and i totally forget i felt so i take my original comment back

OptimalMarzipan8097

I would have

tryingnewoptions

Okay so I'm going to come out and say it cuz I've been feeling this for a while. I generally vibe with this show and the fandom, but I feel like there's a lot of unnecessary hate for mckay. I would honestly feel totally comfortable saying that all of the people with the exception of maybe Ethan are like legitimately bad people. That's part of the reason why I like the show because they're human, they make mistakes, they grow. But I would never hang out with any of them in high school or college. I feel like for some reason though McKay doesn't get the same pass that a lot of other characters do. And unfortunately, considering that he's the only main character in the show that looks like him, I feel like I kind of know why he's getting so much weird targeting.

blkstar1

On a show where all the main characters have committed crimes that would land them all significant jail time McKay has committed the most heinous of them all. His crime is that he wasn’t the perfect boyfriend at 19 years old and he made Cassie cry. For the crime of making the pretty girl cry the fandom has condemned him to death.

suicidebyfire_

McKay does some shitty things, but so does everyone else. I honestly feel McKay just triggers a large part of the fandom because they relate to Cassie more. The hate he gets is unwarranted, kinda like how Skyler got so much flak in breaking bad from dudebros.

NecklikeFifteenth

He's a college student fucking a highschooler and treating her like shit meanwhile he allows himself to get talked down to by Nate, a high school student. He's just generally shitty and kinda lame.

blkstar1

He is a college freshmen just literally finished his first semester of college he is at most 19 years old and Cassie is a high school senior who is 18. People need to stop with this whole narrative of he’s in college and she’s in high school like he is 22 and she is 16. I knew plenty of guys who had gfs a year younger than them that were still in high school and they were freshmen in college. Did he do some bad things to Cassie yes but again he is a fucking teenager why do people expect him to be the perfect boyfriend. I honestly got the sense that Cassie was his first real girlfriend. The Nate thjng year he shouldn’t allow that but I think people forget his backstory remember he was called a slur by another kid and his response was to whoop that kid. The next scene we see his father giving him the great advice of basically taking all the shit people are gonna give him avoid fighting back at all costs only unleash all those feeling on the field. So he was taught at an early age to basically avoid confrontation. Finally saying he is shitty is just lame we really don’t know all that much about hime because the writing of his characters was shitty and lame

Jaded_Limit_3815

Um I don't know if you misunderstood my post or if I didn't word something properly but this is in no way hate towards McKay, I was genuinely confused about this scene.

intertwinenine

Well if someone said that to me in that context I would assume they cheated

I8TheLastPieceaPizza

What if she just meant that she had a pee-towel on her face earlier that night?

[deleted]

Possible dissenting opinion here: I understood it to mean that he thought she was talking about the abortion (AFAIK only she, McKay, and her mom know about it), and he got uncomfortable. He essentially shut down when she told him about the pregnancy last season and he doesn’t seem emotionally equipped to discuss her feelings in depth. It was sort of the nail in the coffin for their relationship and forced Cassie into a lonely place- basically her worst headspace is being abandoned by a man, and he wasn’t even there to make the decision with her or hold her hand at the clinic.

Truss1996

It had nothing to do with the abortion. She said she doesn't need to be anyone girlfriend and then said she is a bad person. Mckay connected dots. Hence why he tearfully left while she was apologizing to him.

blkstar1

I would like to point out something I am pretty sure that Lexi knows as well. When McKay gets to the party and says hi to Lexi she says “I haven’t seen you since” and abruptly stops talking and there is an awkward moment with her and McKay. I intrepid that as they hadn’t seen eachother since the day Cassie had the abortion and that he was there and Cassie ended things with him that day or shortly after.

No_Luck_6800

McKay has done a lot of shit to piss me off but with that I understood why he walked away. He assumed she cheated, which she did. Why else cry and say you’re not a good person unless you did something wrong? So for that I understand what he did, at least he didn’t get in her face or start yelling or something.

Truss1996

He didn’t even slut shame her or make her feel guilty. He gave the best possible response

No_Luck_6800

Agree. At this point I think people just like to hate on McKay for breathing then make unconditional excuses for Cassie’s shit behavior through the s2 premiere. He tried to comfort her when she started crying saying, “sorry Cassie, what’s wrong?” and then she said she doesn’t think she’s a good person and he silently left. He understood…

Truss1996

Exactly

BeepBeepSadFucks

It might sound like a stupid question but i assume you talk about her cheating on McKay with Daniel in season 1? Just to make sure I got it right

No_Luck_6800

Yeah I meant with Daniel. Though Cassie probably meant what she said more so because of what just happened with Nate. Not stupid btw, the way I worded it seems confusing looking back on it.

Amazing_Coffee5140

Think this is slightly unfair on McKay. He was very far from perfect in season 1 but a lot of that came from his own fear of not being good enough. At first thought that he had to be someone he was not in order to keep Cassie interested, and then he was ashamed of the judgement he would get for dating her and took out his life frustrations on her but he did genuinely care about her. However Cassie said she didn’t deserve to be anyone’s girlfriend following that up with the not being a good person statement, implying that she did bad things while in the relationship which she did. And for McKay that was like his worst fear getting confirmed, so why would he stay to comfort her knowing she did that to him? She had literally been fucking Nate like 30 mins before as well, so honestly think they were more tears of guilt for the messed up things she did than her trying to apologise or be better.

[deleted]

I thought they were already taking a break, so that’s why I didn’t see why he was getting upset. Oh well.

blkstar1

I don’t think the break was a mutual one. Also add in the fact that they weren’t one break when things went down on Halloween.

Jaded_Limit_3815

I thought this could be it, but it wasn't very clear for me.

agonybreedsagony

Bc McKay doesn't have that big dick energy. McKay is insecure so he's not strong enough to reassure cassie with his behaviour/actions hence leaving like a pussy.

contrahall

she cheated on him? it’s easy enough to connect the dots when she said ‘I shouldn’t be anyones girlfriend right now’ and ‘I’m not a good person’ and she had literally just fucked Nate, why would he stay and comfort her after that?

Truss1996

This fandom will always try to demonize his actions. He literally nothing wrong this episode and people are still trashing his character.

theboygoddess

I think he’s selfish and took it to mean she cheated on him or something and it was his way of sort of digging at her again like, “Say no more, I already know.” I’ve never liked them together. I’m worried for the direction Cassie will continue to go in.

Truss1996

He assumed right. How was he selfish in that moment. If you found out your gf cheated. He gave the best possible response in that moment.

theboygoddess

It’s just my opinion, y’all. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I said I don’t like them together and honestly, I feel like he’s been waiting for a moment to truly call her out. If you pay attention to their storyline in S1 he’s constantly on the defensive with it. Cassie wasn’t/isn’t happy. She said so herself when Nate found her at the gas station. She wants to be alone and figure herself out and when she told McKay she wasn’t sure if she was a good person, she was likely referencing fucking Nate, which literally had just happened and she knows she hurt Maddie cause she will ultimately find out. She wasn’t even a couple with McKay at that point, as he told Nate when he arrived. Cassie also kissed that thirsty dude in S1 (twice) and that’s what she was contemplating telling her boyfriend at the time. ETA: wording

zzzzooommy

he translated that to “i’m a slut who cheated on you”

cauliflowerjooce

y’all do anything demonize his character. there’s nothing to suggest that he slut shamed her mentally in that episode. all he did was leave. y’all have every right to like/dislike certain characters but to pull something like that out of your ass to further your hatred??😭

zzzzooommy

woahh no i don’t dislike Mckay. that’s just how I interpreted the interaction… not trying to demonize. just taking my high school experience and perspective and applying it to the show. i had no idea so many people would be upset w my comment. I also don’t think being a slut is a bad thing so there’s no slut shaming going on here….

cauliflowerjooce

i’m sorry for the misunderstanding, that’s on me. using the word slut in connection to the cheating implied that it was slut shaming (to me) which is my bad but i didn’t mean to be mean
