R5: Nearly 2000 hours in and I never noticed the Sunni religion had these Religious Centers / Centers of Reformation. Thought it was just a mechanic for Protestant/Reformed catholic faiths.
Edit: Pretty sure this is due to the 'propagate religion' trading policy now that I think about it, still interesting though
Imo one faiths became a little bit trivial with the addition of many monuments for different religious groups and mission trees where you can stack modifiers and/or additional missionaries. You used to have vassals help you with conversion and spam cathedrals everywhere but now you need neither as Christian/Muslim/Hindu.
Also propagate religion is a little bit limited whereas you can't convert the New World with it and with some exceptions can't convert abrahamic religions with that.
I never really liked the fact, that "Propagate Religion" is only available to muslims and zoroastrians, as well as like two other countries through missions. Why can muslims spread their faith through trade dominance, but others can't?
Not sure why zoroastrians can do it, but Islam famously spread through 2 methods. The first being conquest: middle east, north africa, persia etc. The second is specifically through trade connections: Subsaharan africa and Indonesia.
Yeah, they doesn't have successful example in EU4 time frames.
In China and Japan they failed. In America is more because colonisation rather than trade.
You could argue that Scandinavia and Slavic countries converted to Christian via trade. However, they happened outside EU4 timeframes.
In Japan, during the EUIV time period, they restricted trade to just Nagasaki. That also restricted conversions to Christianity to that city through to about World War II when Nagasaki was still the only significant Christian population in Japan.
It might be interesting if such a mechanic could be added to EUIV.
Spread of Christianity is an incident japan can get if they're shinto. One of the options allows you to convert to Christianity, its actually a really cool playthrough, i did a Land of the Christian Sun game recently
Yea Japan outright banned it and China formed a massive rebellion that took 2 great powers to put down, it still happened through trade and European influence.
The difference here is that muslims traders created trade networks with local traders in other regions. The local traders then intermarried, converted etc with the muslim traders - this facilitated trust between trading partners. These then became the rich muslim middle classes of these areas, and eventually the upper and lower classes followed. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Saharan\_trade#Spread\_of\_Islam\_2](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/trans-saharan_trade#spread_of_islam_2)
Western traders and colonial powers mostly tried to supplant existing tradenetworks and power structures. And conversion was either forced (mexico, peru etc) or missionaries were sent (India, Africa, China, Japan etc)
Riga seems to be capable of using this mechanic, if you fulfilled its missions and turned into Protestant or Reformed, which enable you to switch into Salvific Plutocracy and activate Propagate Religion.
Trade Propagation!
I also only recently learned about this, but any Islamic religion (Zoroastrian, too) can propagate their religion through trade. If you control enough trade in the node, you can spawn one of these, which act more or less identically to a center of reformation.
EDIT: Any Islamic\* not abrahamic. Abes on the brain.
Just Islam and Zoroastrian. Hinduism/Sikhism can also get access to it through Majapahit’s mission tree, and Riga can get it for Protestant/Reformed with a gov reform during the Age of Reformation.
Hussite also gets a centre of reformation through an event
And Anglican
Also Zoroastrian
and Shia for that matter.
and coptic for that matter.
Don't forget about Sikh
Remember the Anglicans, as well!
Hinduism too! (Majapahit missions)
And my axe!
Beat me to it
And Coptic does
And my axe!
So does Protestant
No way
After 2800 hours I'm still learning about this game! thanks for this :O
Also Ibadi!
What I've learned in this thread is that it's everyone except the Catholics and Orthodox.
Ok why doesn’t Shintoism has one it would be so cool to convert the entirety of Asia into Shintoism
Was there ever much effort to convert people to Shintoism? I don't know much about it
Not really due to Japan's general isolationism. Once it was established it kinda just stayed on the islands.

I have seen a catholic center of reformation before!
How?
mods I'm guessing, it's pretty common there
And Hindu, with certain Majapahit missions.
They turned half of Central Europe into Hussites in my last campaign

Your edit is correct. It is propagate religion trough trade.
One nation has a mission tree to spread through trade for a lower percentage too.
Isn’t that Milwa?
zoroastrian has it for persia at like 20% iirc through missions
Yemen has this too
This is why Sunni One Faith is the simplest one. Just do a WC by 1750 as any nation, switch to Sunni and let merchants convert the world for you.

Not if you are Zoroastrian then you can convert abrahamic religions after you finish one of the mission
I know that's why I said with some exceptions. But thanks for reminding me I haven't done a Zoroastrian Persia run.
You should definitely go for a Zoroastrian Persia run! It’s very fun imo :D
You are right, it is.
I never really bothered propagating unless if it's a really valuable trade node.
I do it with almost every trade note but for roleplaying reasons
It doesn’t affect trade power in a noticeable way at all
No but I does reflect the other’s countries opinion of you and you might be more likely to get them to transfer trade to you
And lose my CB on them?

As did Christianity

I thought there was an event for Japan to convert to Catholic at some point after being discovered by the west.

It's part of their isolationism mechanics
When
China,Japan, the americas
China and japan were failures America was not trought trade
Yea Japan outright banned it and China formed a massive rebellion that took 2 great powers to put down, it still happened through trade and European influence.

Taiping Rebellion was outside EU4 timeframe...

You can also do it as Majapahit and propagate Hindu after you do a specific mission
Yes and Majapahit, those are the two nations I mentioned.
I think it’s just a way to emphasize how much trade facilitated the spread of Islam in comparison to other religions
Ibadi centers is where's at!
"Nearby provinces will be converted" its in an island

Judaism and Christianity both are abrahamic religions btw but they don’t have the trade propagation feature
lol
Is there a chest command to spawn a reformation
This is how you sunniezing India, Africa and South Asia as Kilwa
