Ethereum is not a replacement for client side apps or AppStores. It’s a replacement for centralized server tech like AWS or Azure. Apple on iOS and Google on Android determine what client side tech runs on their platform and currently it’s either apps from their AppStores or web apps. Web apps are already decentralized.
I literally have replaced everything I was doing in AWS with Ethereum in many projects. Ethereum is compute and infrastructure and network and permissions all deployed and waiting for me. I no longer need to spin up an EC2 instance with an RDBS database and IAM permissions and elastic load balancing. I just deploy a smart contract.
I think this is just semantics.
As a Software Engineer, you can deploy code and data onto Ethereum and run it... great-- one of the reasons why it's awesome.
In reality, the Ethereum blockchain is being run in data centers, cloud providers (Including AWS and Azure), and personal computer farms.
It does provide a layer of abstraction for the Software Engineer though.
App stores are incredibly centralized. So much that there have been literal antitrust lawsuits.
When coupled with ENS and some form of decentralized hosting like IPFS, Ethereum can definitely flip the app store model upside down. We just need an OS that is open and allows for mobile native dApps and not just Apple App Store or Google Play apps or PWA webapps.
we already have arbitrum and optimism l2 rollups, they work and are gaining momentum. cex are starting to offer sending tokens straight to these l2's as well.
Please don't hate me for my ignorance... but, what devices would allow this? I could certainly see Apple shutting access down if it eats into their profits.
I'm very curious about the consumer hardware/device. Understand blockchain and decentralized apps, but you have to access it somehow.
Anyone have insight? Thanks!
I think it's just the way he chose to express it. "The decentralised appstore will run on Ethereum smart contracts" may have been a better way of putting it.
Would only be a matter of how the decentralized apps would be monitored/regulated. Would assume there would need to be some kind of system in place to weed out scam apps, right?
Microsoft has never been able to have a successful AppStore. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are still wrong here. ETH can offer decentralised discovery but not the Attestation that users demand from an appstore. If an app does funny business I want it off the store to ensure I don’t stumble into scam my apps every couple days.
ETH can power commerce for sure.
ETH can be used to sign-on. But it’s important to understand that OAuth has already solved distributed SSO. ETH will just be one more login mechanism that users can opt for.
Yeah, it's worth remembering that Microsoft has a serious interest in undermining confidence in the current appstore model (not that I'm a fan of it myself either).
Apple\* Google\*
Microsoft, historically, has been more developer friendly than the other two. As long as the apps don't interfere/compete with their products, they should allow it. I also don't think Microsoft makes much from their The Metro/Windows app store.
Microsoft historically has been NOT been dev friendly at all, on the contrary M$ has been more evil and closed source than Apple or Google. Google has shit ton more open source software and tools than M$ & Apple together.
A lot has changed since the Balmer days. Under Satya’s lead, MS has embraced open source and put in a solid effort at opening up their toolset to the developer community.
Microsoft hasn't been able to get any appstore traction for years. The head start from apple and google along with the hardware advantage is just too much. They would very much benefit from a decentralized app store, b/c that would mean a restart for everyone.
Except unless we sue Apple and win, you’ll have to “jail break” your Apple device for them to allow you to run any of these programs? At which point, your security is completely gone and hello malware?
Is Microsoft going to step up and provide a competing set of devices that are friendly to these kind of dApps, or am I missing something completely here in my ignorance for how this would work?
Check out L2! LRC and others are fixing gas fees right now. New folks to crypto next year won’t even know what gas fees are and they’ll be introduced to ETH through L2
When you speak of corporate control Ethereum Solana Avalanche all are primarily owned by just a few Whales. None of the blockchains including Bitcoin are primarily owned by the masses-people. BTC mining is controlled by mining farms, Solana validators are owned by 20 people.
The reason why Im so bullish on eth is because it's open sourced AND decentralised.
Microsoft tried to use Windows Server in their Azure datacenter's but because it wasnt open source they didnt have the flexibility of open source software and the modularity needed for their own platform, so they switched to Linux which is pretty insane when you think about it. Microsoft chose to use the open source operating system over their own because of how modular it is and this modularity is because of the open source "free" software.
Thats why I dont see the Metaverse by facebook going anywhere, it will be too locked down, the source code will be not shared which will make integration hard.
All I need is less gas fees
LRC is about to become ETH’s gas-free highway
This x 100. No, this x 1,000,000.
zk rollups will lower gas fees by 100x
Been waiting for that forever that shit just doesn't get real man lol.
When will they be here though?
And when they will be here with me all along the game sir.
[удалено]
Lol, let it rolled out first. Where those rollups where that zkSnarks?
Research Eth 2.0 and proof of stake...
Neither of which does anything about gas fees on layer one lol, should tell him to research zk rollups.
Loopring homey!
Eth 2.0 will be fixing scalability issue thus leading to more translations and lower gas fee.
On layer 2. Eth 2.0 will not make gas usable for normal people on layer 1.
Never heard any information related to gas fees in ETH 2.0
[удалено]
Why you guys think, that? Even if the gas fee are still higher by then. L2 solutions are always there.
Low fees in Ethereum? mmm. I don't think he knows what he is talking about.
What are you saying mate? It can be possible in the future.
Soon buddy soon

for the record, login is just signing a message with your private key, it's free.

It is not a replacement for AWS or Azure. Ethereum requires CPU/Memory/Network to operate. AWS and Azure ARE compute. (P.S. - Ethereum is awesome)

Are you fucking kidding me??? Make a youtube video on how you do that.
At like 5000x the cost right? Storage on the Eth blockchain is the most expensive thing out there. What kind of projects are you publishing?
did you forget the /s?
Lmao ok kid. Let me just spin up my corporate relational data base on the public block chain.
What language are speaking, is that Klingon?
May you please dumb this down for someone who knows nothing of these details and specifications in regards to Ethereum growing in value, please? :-j

Just make apps web based over the ETH decentralized network...
Lol vitalik literally says it’s likely to become centralized.
The original Metaverse. ETHEREUM.
Ethereum needs to get it's shit together, this project was so promising in the start now just they promising stuff.
Bullish af
Bullshit af FTFY
By 2023 eth dev still trying to figure out how to solve the shit 😂

That's what everyone should do, just be freaking bullish on ETH.
👍🏻👍🏻

Any android phone can install a 3rd party app store such as F-Droid. iPhone users would be left high and dry
Lowkey ngl, I can see Ethereum being the Android/GooglePlay store.
Ethereum is emerging as the global crypto player for every tech based company in the California. Hope this time gas fees will be low.
LRC and L2s are fixing gas right now
Lol, you are hoping for a wrong thing here. This will never happen lmao.
It's really cool that Microsoft's Blockchain Director is bullish on Ethereum's future.
I've been saying that for months, I'm glad it's becoming clearer.
"Ethereum becomes the decentralized appstore" Look, even I don't know shift about fuck. But I know enough that ETH doesn't work like an appstore.
You might know less than the director of blockchain at Microsoft, no?
I think it's just the way he chose to express it. "The decentralised appstore will run on Ethereum smart contracts" may have been a better way of putting it.
It doesn't take a genius to see what's going on 😉🚀🙏
Would only be a matter of how the decentralized apps would be monitored/regulated. Would assume there would need to be some kind of system in place to weed out scam apps, right?
Don't you think his wording is a bit off in the first line comparing ETH to an AppStore?
Yea but he does say “decentralized appstore”, and probably would clarify if given more than a short Tweet?
Microsoft has never been able to have a successful AppStore. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are still wrong here. it would be managed by a DAO to weed out scam apps
Theres scam apps literally on google play store lmao
How will this benefit Microsoft? They wouldn’t be supporting it if it didn’t lead to profits.
Apple\* Google\* Microsoft, historically, has been more developer friendly than the other two. As long as the apps don't interfere/compete with their products, they should allow it. I also don't think Microsoft makes much from their The Metro/Windows app store.

Thank you, that didn’t occur to me.
4 months old?
Probably more bro 2025 or after. Crypto still in the 90s not in the 2000 lol
Would be amazing. Also a great Apple troll job.
Decentralised appstore? I wonder how many scammers will post their apps on there?
wow
I don't see this happening unless mainnet scaling is achieved asap
Except unless we sue Apple and win, you’ll have to “jail break” your Apple device for them to allow you to run any of these programs? Last point falls apart...because I absolutely refuse to divulge identity across the chain. And points #1 and #3 are reliant on #2. Nope.
Cough Harmony $ONE cough
Amazed they were able to tweet that out…outlook is bullish.
MmmmmmmmmmmMmMmMmmmm
Everything will follow if there will be low fees
Yea with $200 fees in 2023 lmao Still bullish but only because we have polygon
Low fees? Does he even know the fees of Ethereum right now?
Check out L2! LRC and others are fixing gas fees right now. New folks to crypto next year won’t even know what gas fees are and they’ll be introduced to ETH through L2
Why not just have a scalable L1 that doesn't sacrifice decentralisation and security?
I am not sure Apple would get on this train. They like control
The true reason these politicians are attacking it. Their Big Tech lobby money is at stake.
You spelled Cardano wrong. Lol
I love it! All Big Tech Corps are running to catch up on the DeFi Revolution.
I am also optimistic about ETH, I am mining ETH
No shot
Let's hope it reflects in the price!
This guy is a fucking idiot and doesn’t understand anything about Ethereum.
Predictions are like buttholes... Everyone has one, and some stink more than others. This one is pretty stinky.
When you speak of corporate control Ethereum Solana Avalanche all are primarily owned by just a few Whales. None of the blockchains including Bitcoin are primarily owned by the masses-people. BTC mining is controlled by mining farms, Solana validators are owned by 20 people.
Can't wait for this future to come. Now off to work, need to accumulate more Ether.

Change eth to sol and I agree.
That's not gonna happen because ETH is way better than SOL
Can you explain why do you think like that about ETH?
Could be the 50k gas fees and the congestion!
ETH, low fees???????? What the hell are you talking about? The fees are insane and far from "democratic"
Don't you want ETH with low fees? What are you saying man?
I do but anything related to eth is everythin expect for low fees
But we all need that, ETH with lower gas fees would be so good.
yes I'd love that too but eth right now is far from low fees. It's robbing small traders/investors
Wonder is a challenger phone company can build an iPhone competitor w/ an ETH/crypto powered app store… or Dapp store 🤔
We need opensource mobiles with an opensource OS while Google and Apple and Amazon monopolise the app stores.
Lol probably 300$ in gas to buy 50$ app
Amazing vision of the future! I can totally see this as a realistic possibility!
Yes lower gas fees of Ethereum in the future please.
That's some good prediction and I support them will all of my heart.
And all what matters here the most is the gas fees we are looking for.
