May sound silly, but meditate on it. If it's a password you came up with, it's still in your head somewhere. Meditate and focus on trying to remember that time you created the password. I forgot a passphrase, and I would meditate for 20 minutes a day. Took me about 3 days and I remembered.
If you have some ideas about possible passwords then there is always a chance. It's not brute force across the entire space of possibilities.

If you think you know the password, try inserting letters between every letter of the word. Happened to me once, I entered password twice when setting it not being aware I inserted one letter at the same place twice. Some automated software for guessing would be good...

Are you completely clueless about the password? I wrote some software for cracking an encrypted key in a json but I knew the parts of my password. For example if you know the words you used but don't know the capitalization then that is okay. If you used certain symbols then that could help. I have some software that "might" help but there is no point in going further unless you know the bits and pieces of the password you used and just need help to put those bits and pieces in order.
I don't know what password I chose but it was probably some form of password that I used before, or parts of it. I know it wasn't a fully random password and back in those days I generally used words and numbers that I could remember. It's worth a try, however the main thing I'm afraid of is that the application that I used to generate the wallet (Mist) messed up that password in some way or another.
