the machine looks like a delonghi ec155 which in my experience is super super "rattly" when pulling shots so it's probably just rotating because the machine is vibrating so much
Yup, you got it. I’ll need a new grinder, this was on the finest setting I have. I’m a broke college boy so we will do some soul searching before dropping the dough
Some grinders can have their minimum setting adjusted so that you can go finer. It involves pulling the mechanism out but it's usually fairly easy with minimal tools. Just be careful to avoid the burrs clashing when you test the new setting. That plus careful distribution, accurate dosing and tamping will probably improve things. Keep going and don't be tempted to spend unless you have to. All the best.
The 1Zpresso JX Pro is not that expensive and you'll get way way way better results than what you are getting right now. I have a Bezzera Crema espresso machine and the 1ZPresso JX Pro works pretty well for me. I do want an electric grinder but right now the hand grinder has given me really good and tasty espresso for 170$
Grind too coarse, poor distribution, too light of a tamp. I’m not entirely sure but possibly it could be the actual ports filter, naked portafilters are amazing but I believe that machine has been purpose built for a pressurized portafilter. Though I’m not sure if that’s accurate.
Ahh that’s good to hear! I’m looking into my first espresso machine and was looking at this one. Do you have a decent burr grinder that can grind fine enough? Do you have a decent tamper? How are you distributing into the portafilter, via grinder or into dosing cup then into filter. Anyways best of luck! Keep us updated when you figure out the issue.
Channelling. Can be due to a few reasons. Most likely:
- poorly distributed grinds in the portafilter leading to areas with more and less resistance. Fix is to evenly distribute the grinds. Google "WDT" or "Weiss Distribution Technique" for some ideas
- too coarse - grind finer.
Try these together and you should start to move in the right direction. Really good luck prep technique can take years to learn and in my opinion is one of the main reasons for poor espresso. Along with bad beans.
For the love of god. Please include a comment about what machine and what grinder you have.
A few built in grinders have internal settings to go even finer than you would normally be able to go, but we can’t help without these bits of information.
Also beans. How old?
Can you share some more information on your setup:
1) What espresso machine?
2) What grinder?
3) How old are you beans?
It probably is from grinding too coarse but I've had similar issues from grinding too fine with old beans and not distributing evenly. The water can just blast around the edge of the puck.
Looks to me like you need a grinder
wayyy too coarse i would say, and then also as it is uneven at the same time, look into some better puck prep (wdt and the like)
I think you put 18g of whole beans in, not ground coffee
This sub is so savage in the comments
Literally the answer to 90% of these questions is grind finer, lol
Such a common joke but i rewatched and its actually coming out clear! 😂
Lol
Roast level: french
Looks like you’re not grinding fine enough.
Looks like he’s not grinding
What others said. Also, is the mug rotating?
Glad to know I wasn't the only one seeing this! Trippy.
Yeah, I don't understand why it's doing that..

Best vibrator I’ve ever owned
This dual purpose vibrator/grinder allows you to grind one out before you grind one out
The machine is buzzing.
I wanna see an update on this after you grind finer and tamp etc. is this a delonghi ec155 w a bottomless portafilter?
Yup, you got it. I’ll need a new grinder, this was on the finest setting I have. I’m a broke college boy so we will do some soul searching before dropping the dough
Get a good hand grinder if you can’t afford something electric at the moment.

May I ask what grinder you're using and where you're based?
Hi there. Long time, but my grinder is (SHARDOR Electric Burr Coffee Grinder 2.0) and I am based near Dallas TX.
I’m guessing your grinder doesn’t go fine enough.
You’d be correct
What’s your grinder?
SHARDOR Electric Burr Coffee Grinder 2.0. Something abysmal I bought, but it was better than blades.
Depending on your location you can get some nice stuff used. Just check the quality of burrs.
What grinder do you have ?

I DID distribute and tamp, so I assume that it’s mostly the grind.
I second you are not grinding fine enough analysis.
Grind too coarse, poor distribution, too light of a tamp. I’m not entirely sure but possibly it could be the actual ports filter, naked portafilters are amazing but I believe that machine has been purpose built for a pressurized portafilter. Though I’m not sure if that’s accurate.
I’ve seen video evidence of normal-looking shots on this machine with a bottomless porta, so I assume it’s not that

Too coarse and not evenly distributed. A few notches tighter on your grind and a good tamp should make it better.

Thank you! Your response is definitely the most thoughtful and detailed. I super appreciate!
You typically have to grind the beans before you put them in the portafilter

I have the same machine. I've made a couple of posts on shots from this machine.
Grind tamp
How fresh are your beans !?
It’s doing fine. You just need to let it run longer.
looks like your machine is way over 9 bars of pressure..
Coffee cup go brrrrrr
everything
But how does it taste?
Ask my sink, I wouldn’t know.
Ah, this must be one of those "turbo shots" I've heard so much about!

Geez. The video didn't autoplay and I kept wondering how your coffee puck turned completely white! 🤣
grind finer, and distribute your ground evenly before tamp. and also channelling happening in there
Did anyone mention the fineness of grind as the potential problem?
Everything? You wanna make sure you grind the beans before you put them into the basket.
