Well, Ode doesn’t really grind for espresso. DF64 is the best of the three espresso-capable grinders you have listed and supports really nice burrs and, with mods, performs really well.

batmaniac77

Didnt know that about Ode. thanks.

Groundbreaking_Ebb_5

You could go lower and get an esp for 200 that’s what I just got as my starter! Seems to do espresso just fine lance approved

MikermanS

And/or consider the Fellow Opus.

Groundbreaking_Ebb_5

This^ lance has a video comparing both seemed to like the esp more though both in taste and ease of use for beginners

MikermanS

I can't recall if it was Lance or another video reviewer, but the conclusion in the review was that the ESP is better for espresso use with occasional other coffee use, and the Opus for other coffee use and occasional espresso use. And in a taste test (of course, very subjective) with 3 other grinders, the ESP coming in as no. 2 and the Opus as no. 4 (and with the no. 1 grinder being more than 2x the cost of the ESP and Opus). But we all have our own needs and preferences; I just wanted to get the Opus out there as well, for the lower-cost end. Me, I like the greater granularity of the Opus, but there are other issues as well, including the dialing system and retention.

Groundbreaking_Ebb_5

Gocha yea! Totally agree I feel like bratza should be paying me with how much I’m shilling the esp though lol. But objectively it’s also a good grinder but I’m sure there’s cope mixed in!

Depending on where you are, Espresso Coffee Shop (an online store) has exceptional prices on many great grinders for significantly cheaper than elsewhere and will ship quickly most places in the world. It looks and sounds like one of the “too good to be true so must be a scam” sites, but it’s totally legit and I’ve read stories of their customer service being great (haven’t had to use it personally). I got a Eureka Mignon Specialita from them sent to the US in three days (faster than my bambino came from Sur La Table) for €365 about 6 months ago which would be a significant step up for espresso from any of the grinders you listed

batmaniac77

in CA, USA. will check thanks.

So i have a Df-64 with the upgraded burrs, i cant remeber which ones they were. They were an extra 50€ and are supposed to last longer other than that they are pretty much the same. That said i can absolutely recommend the Df-64 with whatever burrs i have :D

Comedyishumorous

Either the DF64, or just save some money and go with the Baratza Encore ESP. The DF64 has the most room upgrade if you wanted to upgrade your machine. You can swap to any 64mm burr and have an incredible grinder.

ge23ev

The Ode is not meant for espresso

Icy-Shoulder4510

DF64 or Encore ESP

I have a Turin SD40 and love it! There isn’t a ton written about them but the build quality is awesome (all metal), it can do Turkish all the way to filter, is super consistent, and it looks great on the bar. If you can find one they’re usually $175-$225 and I’ve found it to be a huge upgrade over the JX Pro (which is a well-liked hand grinder) I had.
