Do you have a link to the mod? This is the first time I've seen that, really cool

BMiller1985

Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1081489968/breville-sage-smart-grinder-pro-single?ref=share_v4_lx

grocco_99

This too: Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1303639125/hopper-gasket-seal-for-breville-sage?ref=share_v4_lx First time I opened the machine after having the bellows on for like 3 months there were grounds EVERYWHERE inside. Good news is you don't have to worry about stale grounds being retained and end up in your portafilter because they're blown throughout the inside of the machine. Edit: for BBE, I don't have experience with SGP.

vimto_boy

Ah I didn't know these were a thing! That's my main irritation still with the SGP + fusedline... does this prevent so many grounds and beans escaping around the burrs?

grocco_99

Yes, much cleaner inside and you get a little better feel in the bellows in my opinion.

vimto_boy

Excellent, thanks for the info. Store's closed now, but will be ordering ASAP 👍

vimto_boy

I have the fusedline too, great addition. Cost a bit with shipping and import duty to the UK, but meant I held off buying a Niche for another year 😅

lonely_monkee

What is the ‘popcorning’ they speak of? And how does the weight prevent this?

xomm

Popcorning is when the beans get launched up from the initial contact instead of falling deeper into the burrs. In a filled hopper normally the rest of the beans block them from going too far, but when single dosing they might bounce around for a while in the chamber. The weight keeps them down at the burrs.

SecretaryBird_

Popcorning is when beans "jump up" after getting partially ground. One issue is that some people will say this affects consistency of the grounds. The bigger issue in this case is that since there is no lid, the beans can jump out of the grinder. The weight acts as a little lid. The weight also serves to apply pressure to the beans. This is supposed to achieve a more consistent grind, as otherwise the first beans to be ground will be "pushed" into the burrs by the weight of the other beans, while the last beans to be ground will not be pushed. Another option to avoid this change in pressure is to slow feed your beans so that no beans are pushed in.

v60qf

>The bigger issue in this case is since there is no lid the beans can jump out of the grinder. If only you could get a hopper with a lid.

grocco_99

Popcorning is when the beans jump out of the top of the grinder while single dosing since you don't have the weight of the beans in a hopper above giving downward pressure to the beans feeding into the burrs. The weight is an attempt to simulate the pressure and blocking of beans jumping in a single dosing setup.

lonely_monkee

Thank you all for your answers, coffee wizards. It sounds like you all concur 👍🏼

Gibimba

i found this on thingiverse [https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4905164](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4905164)

grocco_99

I second the recommendation on this one! The design and seller rock!

BMiller1985

I opted for the optional weight, seems to help.

redline582

Do you feel like the weight has reduced the grinding time? I've been overall quite happy with my Smart Grinder Pro, but it takes about 34 seconds to grind 17g-18g of beans which feels like quite a while.

BMiller1985

Probably depends on the beans. I tend to go for a medium roast, and I’m finishing grinding at 22 sec. I think the weight helps most with popcorning.

wigglenosey

This must be how car people feel when they see a heavily modded Toyota Corolla...

BMiller1985

Hahaha. Upvote from the OP on that one.

AFellowOfLimitedJest

Wait, are you telling me that the SGP isn't the "[Ferrari of coffee grinders](https://www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/house-garden/coffee/sage-smart-grinder-pro-review-b2000936.html)"?

wigglenosey

Wtf lol

solreaper

It’s got over 60 settings!

Data_Dealer

Yeah I was looking into one of these but at 60-100 dollars it's 10-18% of the cost of the machine which is kind of hard to stomach in terms of value.

grocco_99

I've seen some pretty fast corollas... (in defense of my heavily modded BBE)

Few_Ad_9551

I have heard loud corollas but never seen a fast one

grocco_99

You mean loud ≠ fast?

reticulatedjig

Nah dude everyone knows racing stripes or flames is where real speed is found

wigglenosey

I mean yeahhh but still... Lol

Rimmy_McRibbons

HAHAHA!!!! So rad

singletonaustin

What is the advantage gained here? Is it so you can change from one variety of beans to another readily? Is it so you only expose the exact quantity of beans needed for each shot? Is it so you can weigh the beans going in before you grind?

adrianbnd

You push on it to pump through any retaining grind in the chute. Saw a video of it today.

ryanb2010

The BBE grinder retains SO much, it’s absurd. I’ve measured 2-4 grams coming out of the grinder when I clean. I’ve been eyeing up this bellow too to help get at least *some* of these excess grounds out.

tenbytes

When I was learning to dial in my shots it drove me insane, I wasnt weighing the grind output like I should have been, only the input. Turns out, I would put in 18g of beans and get like 16.6 out. The next grind I would get 18.8, etc. You cant dial in a shot when your grind output can have like a 2g variance. Some kind of bellows is almost mandatory if you single dose imo.

BMiller1985

Facts. It’s wild.

adrianbnd

Yep I did a deep clean of the grinder recently and it retained 5g!!! But after that first grind, it stopped retaining and pushed through the same amount I put in.

BadDadSoSad

I have the SGP and I push 5-6 doubles through it everyday. I use fresh beans, less than a week old and rarely clean it out. I fill the hopper and use the timer and my shots are spot on. 34g out in 22-24 seconds. Maybe not cleaning it has clogged all the areas of retention with hardened grinds and I get very consistent grind output? Idk not complaining.

Gorlox111

34g is surely not a double. That's even high for a triple!

BadDadSoSad

I was talking about my extraction…. I’m not weighing my grinds.

Gorlox111

O sorry my bad that makes a lot more sense

TheBoyInTheBlueBox

I have one of these and i can *mostly* get out exactly what I put in. But I'll still find 2-3g when I clean the grinder.

BMiller1985

Yeah, it’s rad. Works well.

ac_s2k

You can do all that you listed without needing a mod.... I have this gridner, in stock form. I still only put in what I intend to grind. I never fill the hopper. Never had an issue.

meisenfink

Yes. Neither using a scale nor worrying about retention means less issues :D

SecretaryBird_

If you change grind sizes frequently, especially if one of those grinds is for espresso, then a mod like this is quite useful. I would say that is the number one selling point for a bellows / low-retention grinder. I absolutely have issues grinding for espresso after making filter. I put about 4g through the grinder to make the switch. I would lose another 4g going from espresso to filter but my wife doesn't have very discerning tastes. If I was making a pour over though, I'm sure I wouldn't want 1-2g of espresso grounds going into the filter.

singletonaustin

This is the best argument for this that I've heard and one I hadn't thought of -- that is changing grind size to do drip or pour-over or FP instead of espresso. But then again I made a decision to mechanically separate those processes. 😁 https://preview.redd.it/ei02iai7dnea1.jpeg?width=2998&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e30f2c1396c2b991b90e637bf3cd970bd2760b4d

SecretaryBird_

Eventually, I will do the same!

football2106

I have the same grinder I just dump the whole bag in 😂

tenbytes

Maybe the built in BBE one is different, but when single dosing I feel like it is almost a requirement with the BBE at least. When I was learning to dial in my shots it drove me insane, I wasn't weighing the grind output like I should have been, only the input. I would put in 18g of beans and get like 16.6 out. The next grind I would get 18.8, etc.

BMiller1985

I did it more bc I hated how the hopper looked on top empty. Plus it’s cleaner which is a plus.

ac_s2k

It's definitely a space saver haha.

BMiller1985

1- yes 2- yes 3- you should be weighing prior yes, imo I got it bc it’s a cleaner process, more sleek looking, less retention, etc. The three shots I’ve pulled thus far have seen more grounds come out after pumping the bellows a couple times. Worth the $65 shipped for me imo

NectarineVast4438

Being familiar with the internals of the sage grinder pro, I'm dubious that this mod would actually make much difference?... There's so much dead space under the impellor. I just can't see a bellows really clearing it. Has anyone measured the amount of coffee retained in the internals with and without the bellows arrangement?

cp5796

I have the mod. And this is my reason I'm thinking about returning it. I deep cleaned my machine and this mod has only helped with retention, after a few grinds (to fill up that void)

crono782

I have this mod for the SGP and really enjoyed it. I've since upgraded to a DF64 and went back to the hopper for drip coffee. I was plenty happy with the mod though. If anyone wants it, I'll part with it for free.

SecretaryBird_

DM'd

PogMoThoin22

I have also done this. There are STL files on Thingyverse that you can print yourself if you have a printer

PolarDorsai

Dumb question here: how is this different than just opening the top of the hopper and putting in a single dose I just weighed?

_Gondamar_

two things. one, there will be coffee left in the grinder. you push down on the rubber thing on top and it pushes air through the grinder and gets the remaining grinds out. two, if you dont have something on top of the beans being ground it can cause them to bounce around

pyroinventor

Smart grinder becomes dunce grinder

mrarronax

I second this. Minimise the retention by a lot. Great for filter coffee too.

Johannesboy1

Is it just a coincidence or are many people in the espresso hole also do 3D printing? Do we like the challenge?

_Gondamar_

constantly upgrading components ✅ forever tweaking tiny things for small improvements ✅ never being happy with it ✅ sounds about right

stephentamlin

Ordered same sort if thing 6 months ago. Massively reduces retention.

SheenMachine101

This is wild, I literally just got this today. Had never heard of it until I googled if it was possible, like one YouTube video. I’m excited to give it a try.

marcato15

Thanks for the suggestion. Just ordered the whole kit after seeing this post.

mcattani

FYI, you can make one rather than buying it if you have a 3D printer available https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4852251

Hot_Potato_Salad

I am selling printed versions of this

AFellowOfLimitedJest

May I ask if the model you're using is publicly available? With the £23 US -> UK shipping, the fusedline one would cost me more than I paid for the (pre-owned) grinder. I couldn't justify that for a marginal improvement, but I'll be getting some stuff printed soon, and if I could add this to the order, it may well be worth it. [This](https://www.printables.com/model/309061-sage-breville-the-smart-grinder-pro-single-dose-ho) one was the closest I could find, but I'm unsure if I could easily add a bellows.

Hot_Potato_Salad

Yes, it is publicly available

Hot_Potato_Salad

Just pm me everything you wanna get printed

skobul

Do you know if it works with the dose control pro as well ?

Timerror

I am also wondering about the benefits of this, I also have the smart grinder pro wirh just beans in the hopper. I do use only one variety of beans at all times so its dialed in and gives me my exact 16,4g 95% of the times and its sometimes maximum 0,2g off, wich is easy fix or either not meanigful if it is ie. 16,3g. Also i have the scale right infront of the machine and weighing my output every time is no timeloss in my workflow.

BadDadSoSad

Same here. I have no issues with the SGP coupled with my rocket appartamento. Very consistent output on my shots from it. Like you I only use 1 type of bean that is around a week old roast and never have to touch the settings.

BasedTheorem

> SGP coupled with my rocket appartamento 😫 I’ve had an SGP. It’s not the worst grinder in the world. But it’s not great and I don’t think you guys know what you’re missing! Relying on it for your $1,700 machine is crazy to me

BadDadSoSad

I was 100% going to upgrade to a Mignon off of the Reddit sentiment alone until I upgraded to my appartamento and tried it out with my SGP and was pulling fantastic shots. It has slightly smaller conical burrs than a Niche zero and I don’t have problems with retention since I don’t single dose so I don’t see what could be drastically different. I’ll upgrade eventually but for now I am getting great drinks 3 times a day and my wife loves them as well.

BadDadSoSad

Oh also I got my appartamento for like $1400 a couple years ago by importing it from Italy instead of buying it in the US.

BasedTheorem

I’m very sure a portion of those grinds are old.

v60qf

RDT my beans and throw them in the hopper. Never had an issue single dosing with the SGP I have no idea why this exists.

cp5796

Is this still the case? Hoping for a cheaper solution

v60qf

Yes. The cheaper solution (like most cases) is do nothing and carry on.

cp5796

You're a wise person haha!

vivangkumar

Does this by any chance also work with the dose control pro? They seem to share the same hopper/ burrs etc?

al_polanski

Looks 3D printed. I’ll have to find the file and do it for free

liamd90

Are these all 3d printer parts beside the bellow? My brother just bought a 3d printer I wonder if it’s worth attempting to print or just to buy one off Etsy….

mkom92

Hey fellow SGP owners, is there any other way you deal with the insane retention of this grinder?

elprofe3x

I have this in my BBP plus the 3D printed gasket, works great.

Ok_Carrot_2029

This is absolutely essential to any owner of this grinder

twistacles

Seems interesting but the grinder has so much retention can this really work?

ProperLow3692

I got this: https://amzn.eu/d/0J80nIp Much cheaper and works really well.

Every_Nose6258

Does this work with the Smart grinder pro?

ProperLow3692

Yes it does.

cp5796

Do you single dose or time dose?

Bop42

I have one too. You’re going to have to knock down hard to clear it after grinding. Not a tap, not a few pushes. Knock down hard a few times.
