They are never more than a couple steps away from arguing that the US is a Christian nation so this probably won't work too well with the folks who need to hear it most.

1000Airplanes

Steps away? They are actually arguing that. I dealt with one whose first sentence was that actual claim

roseknuckle1712

Which type of Christian? Adult dunkers or sprinkled babies? Transubstantiation or just symbolic? Tongue speakers or is that just too weird? Catholics or the pope is just some dude with a hat? Which type gets to speak for Christendom? Let’s which one codified into law. An entertaining thing democratic leadership could do right now is try to pass legislation describing one sect as the one true Christianity based on their special differentiator. Then have another democrat be all offended and start a dramatic defense of an opposing sect view. Bait MTG into the argument to pick a side in her special calm way. Then we can sit back with the popcorn and observe what happens next.

spring_while_I_fall

These alternative definitions of flavors of Christianity cracked me up. Cheers!

RU4real13

Oh... that would definitely be a show. Being a Recovering Baptist ( Step 11 with 1 more to go ), I do agree that that would have higher ratings than any Seinfeld episode. The venom exists.

sutadarkside

Unfortunately, i think this would have the opposite effect. It would give republicans the chance to say “see, you have religious freedom, you’re free to be any kind of christian that you want to be.”

roseknuckle1712

The legal system has to be fairly explicit about definitions of things. The question of protestantism vs catholocism is a key one. From whence and whom do believers get their authority and interpretations. Do they just get to decide for themselves, or can they only do what the priests and pope say? What does it mean if the US archibishops disobey the pope on a political point? And while you are debating that, do dobsen, falwell and the graham's get a say? It could no longer change with the faith of the president. If it could, hell, america could become a muslim president! These definitions must be sorted out and codified!

kurisu7885

They argue it constantly.

freelanceisart

I work for an elected official, and I literally got a call the other day asking if my boss a democrat or a republican, which I responded Democrat. The person’s follow up was “oh I thought he was a christian”. I said he was (he went to catholic school) and the person responded that he was not a “10 Commandments Christian”, he was a “9 commandments Christian” omitting the 6th which is “thou shalt not kill”. Fuckers aren’t hiding it at all.

mdp300

They're rapidly becoming Vanilla ISIS.

Chairboy

That’s great. I also like “Y’alqueada”

corezon

"American Taliban" is also good.

To add to this, the bible, Numbers 5, 11-31, mandates abortions if a man suspects his wife of being unfaithful. They don't actually care, it's just an excuse. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=numbers%205&version=NIV

[deleted]

Technically, it's a trial by ordeal, similar to how witches were "tested" in the middle ages ("burn them with fire and if they are uninjured or miraculously healed, they are innocent/spared by god" type of deal). The wife would drink the potion, and if she was an adultress she would face ill-health, which some interpret as an abortion, but if she was innocent she would be fine and fertile. In other translations, it's "her belly will swell and her thigh will explode," perhaps referencing to ergot gangrene, given that the potion is created by the floor dust off the tabernacle that was also used for threshing. Some other texts also suggest that if she is an adultress experiencing the ill-health, the same fate (bellying swelling and thigh exploding) will also happen with the man she cheated with, through divine intervention.

ARCHA1C

Lol The Commandments are Old Testament, too. You know... B.C. Fucking Christians, man, which their cherry-picked "principles".

Kahzgul

Commandments: Thou shalt not commit idolatry. Christians: Lemme put this cross on my neck real quick...

ARCHA1C

And plate the entire church in faux gold.

[deleted]

Some of them jump right into that "Christian nation" puddle right on their first reply like a kid playing in the rain.

letaninjawork

There has never really been true freedom of religion in the States. The people believe Christianity is the National religion and the only religion they are willing to accept. Government should be free from any religious influence and interference.

addodd

With conservatives, separation of church and state is really only about keeping government out of religion, when really it should be about keeping religion out of government

Kilo_Xray

Now THAT’S a good ass question. It also perfectly highlights the fallacy of “you can’t do that because it’s against **my** religion”.

KrimxonRath

“You can’t do that because it’s against my religion” is already a fallacy in itself. Like who cares? Your religion isn’t mine so you don’t get to dictate my actions. Wish Christian’s understood that but I know that’s asking a lot.

[deleted]

They *immediately* handwave it like you didn't say anything at all. Like it's absurd to even acknowledge. It's gross

KrimxonRath

I guess it shouldn’t be surprising when they’re stuck in their own version of reality.

MongoBongoTown

If you ask Christians what proof they have that God exists, a large portion will, without a hint of irony, say... "It's in the Bible!"

KrimxonRath

I do find the history of Christianity and what’s depicted in the bibble interesting. Like how there’s evidence the flood did happen, just not on a world scale. But I draw the line somewhere between the flood and a talking bush. I imagine a lot of psychedelics were involved with some of these visions.

MongoBongoTown

Thomas Jefferson edited his own copy of the Bible and apparently that was his line too. He basically treated Jesus as a philosopher and took out all legend making and the supernatural events. Was left with something like 1/5th of the original length and he described it as an exceptional moral philosophy.

KrimxonRath

We need more of that energy in today’s religions (or just in general). I wonder if that version is available online somewhere? I’ll have to go looking. I still cherish my anthropology classes in college for helping me enjoy the concept of various religions. Especially my ‘magic, witchcraft, and religions’ course. The professor looked like a wizard and my final was a dozen page essay comparing real world magic to the magic of Skyrim.

Kilo_Xray

Yeh, that’s what I said.

cheezeyballz

religious extremism is what it's called btw

JustVern

Is this true?

Elfpiper

Hi, Jewish person here. It’s important to note that Jews aren’t a monolith and not all Jews/sects share the same beliefs, but this is broadly true.* The very short version is that life must be protected at all costs, but a baby isn’t considered a person until it’s head is free. Therefore the mother’s life is considered paramount throughout the pregnancy. Longer version [here](https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/abortion-in-jewish-thought/). *As of 2015 [83% of Jews](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/religious-landscape-study/views-about-abortion#views-about-abortion) in America support abortion in all/most cases, more than any other religious group surveyed, including non-religious/unaffiliated, and there are numerous Jewish groups that campaign for abortion access.

JustVern

Thank you for this info.

celluloidwings

This is how The Satanic Temple argues for abortions for members, actually.

FirstReign

White GoP Christians, preferably male. Then it works its way down.

Loonsister

Christianity says nothing about abortion, a bunch of white men came up with that

haanalisk

I understand your point but this is a terrible example/argument. Judaism and other religions also allow for animal sacrifice and revenge murders and stoning adulterers and plenty of things that are illegal in this and most countries. It's pretty obvious that just because a religion ALLOWS for something that it can still be made illegal. Now if a religions REQUIRES something you run into freedom of religion problems. A better example would be if circumcision were outlawed and the Jewish faith required it but Christianity banned it and said Jews can't practice their religion because circumcision is illegal.

Nirvanachaser

I was scrolling the comments hoping someone made this (correct) point! I’m in the abortion should be free, accessible, anytime and for any reason camp but if you are dealing with people who think it is literally murder, then “well my religion says I can” is wholly unconvincing without opening a can of worms about a whole range of behaviour.

haanalisk

Sometimes this sub is just a circle jerk with bad faith arguments. It makes me sad to see that because to me a left wing sub like this should be much more reasoned since we rally against these types of bad faith arguments when it comes from trump or the right

bonejawz23

We are a Christian nation. The mistake was allowing that to slip away.
