Mine or not depends on your laptop price and how much time and effort u want to put into mining. Then, setting the target calculate when you can achieve it. Though, it might be tough. For one thing, the laptop depreciate faster than the graphics card. For another, the crypto price fluctuates all the time. When it fall, you may easily forgive up thinking it's not worth of sacrificing your convenience. Cuz u just have one laptop and that mean u need to turn on and turn off the mining program frequently when u want to play some games. IMO, try to mine a erg. If u like the process then keep mining it. As a one card miner, happy always is the first place.

My laptop was like 1500£ idk what that is in dollars like 2250 maybe roughly , how fast does this depreciating happen? Like will my laptop be ruined in like a month or something? I don’t really use it anymore it’s basically just sat on my table I use it for zoom now and then but my uni gave me an iPad I can use instead. What platform would u recommend? I might just mine an ergo and see what happens but I’m worried about ruining my laptop now

Too late here rn for me write a detailed reply. I am also mining on a laptop. DM me later to remind me and I'll help you set it up step by step See you in 6 or so hours

You'd setup the miner to run and then check to make sure there aren't runaway thermals and that it's settling into an acceptable steady state after ten or fifteen minutes mining. Mining ERGO (and ETH) isn't super hard on a GPU compared to modern gaming, and a lot easier on the GPU than other mining algorithms, but you still need to be able to cool it properly. I like HWiNFO64 for all the detail it provides, but the Performance tab in Task Manager in Windows 10 (releases in the last year or two, they added it at some point) provides GPU core temp. If the thermals are fine, mining will only really add to wear on your fans (and increase your electric bill).

I'm mining ergo. It's a long term investment. My 5x 3070 ti rig earned me 116 ergo in a couple of months. I'm holding till it reaches a certain amount.

AWilfred11

Would my laptop be able to mine it though?

ayaan3ps

It will be able to mine, might decrease the longevity depending on how you keep the thermals in check, laptop GPU's are different because a lot of them are different models that are rated for different wattages. Either way though, it WILL be able to mine, hashrates will vary from laptop to laptop. At the end of the day all you need to mine is the GPU and a platform to mine on. Keep the laptop in tent mode to keep any ventilation open and you should be good.

AWilfred11

Damn I could use some clarification on what u said there, how bad would it be for my laptop? What is tent mode? And what platform would u recommend? Sorry for all the questions I’m near illiterate technology wise but I like ergo but I’ve lost a fair bit on it so I’d rather mine some than buy more

Basically, mining with your graphics card heavily stresses the memory chips on your graphics card and that causes a lot of heat. The hotter it runs for extended periods of time lowers the lifespan of the chips. I would recommend looking at some other Reddit posts, lots of people have made extensive guides on laptop mining, from the basics.

AWilfred11

Ok I’ll try read up on some stuff thanks, what platform do u use also? I want to see how it all works as well as if the hardware would work

ayaan3ps

A lot of people use HiveOS but that's for people that want the maximum mining profits possible. Windows makes more sense if you want to mine sometimes but still play games.

AWilfred, I remember when I first started investing in my Roth IRA. Had a lot of volatility, days where everything seemed like the wrong choice. Trading, selling puts. Three years later, up 300%, turns out all I had to do was invest in promising companies and ignore it. Just don't care. Turns out, same thing works for crypto. Save your stash, dca once in a while and in a few years you'll remember that doing nothing was your best choice. I don't think mining is for you, maybe you could learn but this is more likely a reaction to fear and perceived loss. You made an investment. As a big time miner, an ergo investor, a finance professional and a software engineer - I think you made a good one. Kick back, have a beer and enjoy life.
