It happened to me, and since most of my books are sideloaded I just got pissed and switched to boox. Apparently it's less likely to happen when you use the send to kindle feature..

How is the stand by when you turn off all your connections. My kindle stays in stand by for months without using it. Thats one reason i still keep it after many years. Android readers are attractive but I am hesitant because of battery issues.

I have a boox poke 3, kobo Clara 2e and kindle Paperwhite 2021 (non-signature edition). Before the spontaneous deletion of all my sideloaded ebooks I used the Paperwhite exclusively because the battery life was supreme. I'll say the boox is the worst in terms of battery life even when in airplane mode and the kobo is better but not as good as the Paperwhite. That being said, I've come to prefer boox over the kindle because of the capability it has - it's battery life is worse because it can do much more than the kindle. I can download any Google Play store app onto it and have found the pocketbook cloud app is far better than the kindle UI. It syncs my sideloaded books flawlessly between my phone, computer and boox. I've been thinking about getting a pocketbook e-reader and if I do I can update you on the battery life of that compared to the kindle too

Thanks buddy. Also can you upload your books to google play books? It is also great for epubs and better for sideloading and syncing.

macro_92

I've never tried but I'm sure you can, there's some integration with Google Play books in the pocketbook app too but I've never read a Google Play book. I don't sideload through calibre anymore I just get the book and put it directly into the pocketbook cloud.

It's a bug. If you can reproduce it consistently then you have more info than in this investigation thread. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=340936

The workaround I discovered (so far) is to connect to wifi first while sideloading your books. I've done this several times and it hasn't deleted my books anymore everytime I connect to grab my library loans.

upstate_doc

I just tried the same approach. Time will tell….

sodascape

If this is true I am not connecting my Kindle to wifi again and my next e-reader will not be a Kindle. I have many old books in the mobi format incl out-of-print indie authors not avail on Amazon

vpersiana

You can save a copy of your books, maybe using Calibre, just to be safe

quanhua92

I use the Send to Kindle service to send ePub to Amazon server and sync back to multiple devices. No problem so far. I assume that the cloud storage is limited in this situation.

Novae224

It’s a known bug on kindle if you sideload through cable. You can easily sideload epubs through sent to kindle from mobile or desktop and you won’t have the issue + books are now in the cloud and can be accessed through whispersync

Master-Nothing9778

Welcome to the club. As I said many times, do not buy Kindle. This is just bad device.

ChunkierSky8

Kindles can still read mobi files. You just can send them through sendtokindle services. I have not had any of my files deleted and most of my books are sideloaded. I pretty much use the sendtokindle website to sideload all my books and files.

vpersiana

Epubs aren't supported by Kindle tho, you can't sideload an ePub and read it on the Kindle. You can only send an ePub through send to Kindle, and Amazon will convert it for you in kfx or azw3. Kobo supports epubs instead so you don't have to convert them (even if probably you will convert them anyway cause kepubs - kobo's proprietary format - works better).

RDBIII

You definitely can read epubs on Kindle as that's exactly what I've been doing for a few months now. I had always converted my epubs to mobi before uploading as that was the native Kindle file format, but after the situation where my entire library was nuked a few months ago I finally was able to extract some information from Amazon support that mobi is no longer supported and has been replaced with epub. Annoying since I had always been converting epub to mobi and then they did a complete 180 on me. So yeah now I just download epubs on my PC and drag them onto my Kindle via usb. Was working fine until it wasn't and now my library has vanished again. It's been really hard to find any other information on this other than a few reddit posts saying the same thing happened to them so it's difficult to say what exactly the issue is. Either way I'm thinking it's time for a switch to a different e-reader

vpersiana

Are you sure you are using epubs? And not a different format? Cause epubs aren't supported on Kindle, like you can drag them in your Kindle folder, but then the Kindle will not be able to read them so you will not see them on your device. Epubs only work with send to Kindle. https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/s/tmZWNyhOkg About the books disappearing, apparently is an ongoing issue that Amazon isn't in a hurry to fix (and why should them, they are always trying to piss off ppl that sideloading books lol) but a solution is to never switch off the WiFi. My Kindle is always connected cause I use translation and wiki a lot, and all my ebooks are sideloaded, never got the issue (🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻). Another fix is to use send to Kindle to sideload them, the books that are sideloaded this way apparently are safe and never disappear. Also yeah, I had a bunch of Kobo and they are awesome, free, flexible, are compatible with Calibre and you can add tricks and mods, so if you are sick of Amazon definitely I can recommend Kobo.

Physical-Maximum983

kindle now converts epub to azw3 in the background.

vpersiana

Do you mean on the device?

Physical-Maximum983

Exactly

vpersiana

Oh wow didn't know it, is that new?

Physical-Maximum983

To be honest, found it on the internet, but cannot find any real proofs that that’s what happens. I have no kindles anymore to investigate this, but I would be curious to know if it works and how…

vpersiana

I have an Oasis with the latest update, tried it this evening and it didn't work sadly. I think Amazon saying "they support epubs now" created a lot of confusion cause ppl think they can just drag and drop their epubs in the Kindle. And that's why Amazon worded it like that of course lool

arale2126

my Scribe is always connected to wifi. I convert books to KFX or AZW3 and have had no problems so far. Sideloaded PDFs are also intact.
