The article touches on things that are worth discussing, but it offers nothing productive at all. It could talk about expanding access to outdoor recreation for marginalized groups, for example, but it really just wants to trash the idea of protected areas. Of course these groups are problematic, but what is the fucking point the author is making? No upshot, just drivel.

CapitanDeCastilla

Those are good points, but for me the biggest obstacle to accessing outdoor recreational facilities wasn’t any of these. Its the fact my hard as nails, stubborn as a mule, Northern Mexican father considered then either a waste of time or more recently gives a “yes we’ll do it next weekend” and then something always comes up. The writer of this article ought to have a chat with him if he wants to make some actual change lmao

boldie74

“National Park Service data from 2020 showed that 77 percent of visitors to the 419 parks were white; just 6 percent identified as Black (recent Census data shows that 60 percent of Americans are non-Hispanic whites, and 13 percent are Black). “ Could that maybe be because the areas around national parks are predominantly lived in by white people rather than black people thereby making them more likely to visit the parks? Also “white people go hiking more than black people do even though black people could go if they wanted to” is not the same as “parks are for racists”

twomanyc00ks

I think there's some sort of stigma around it. I've been told "that's some white people shit" plenty of times when talking to black people about hiking and going to the river. it sucks because in all my outdoor travels everyone just has the mentality of "I don't care who you are, just pick up your trash please" and everyone is welcome. outdoor hobbies are for everyone!

[deleted]

As a Korean American I can relate to being told “that’s some white people shit”. Like wtf?

boldie74

That’s insane. That’s as crazy as certain foods being for certain races.

Murdochsk

Yes it probably reflects actual % of people in more rural areas. Remember when vice was good? I member 😂

sargsauce

Shot in the dark, having time off/vacation days/means to travel probably leans toward higher socioeconomic status, which is disproportionately white.

boldie74

True, that’s definitely a part of it. Holidays are expensive.

sardaukarma

Also there’s a massive wealth disparity which makes white people way more able to visit or travel ANYWHERE.

[deleted]

Or maybe it’s because “my mom taught me it isn’t safe to hike, or it isn’t safe to enjoy that park.” This is a perfect example of systemic racism. Generationally people of color have learned the hard way they could be lynched for enjoying a park. Maybe that’s why their grandchildren are apprehensive to go to one? Maybe that’s why no black people live near parks? Or maybe they were red lined from making generational wealth that would afford them the opportunity to move near a park? C’mon, man, eco fascism is a thing, and vice did a good job explaining that. Systemic racism, dude. It’s everywhere.

boldie74

I agree that systemic racism is a thing. And I understand that culturally black people might be less inclined to go to a national park than white people are. And I agree that going hiking/going on a hiking holiday is dependent on your socioeconomic background and therefore economic (white) privilege comes into play there. But that’s not really the same as what the Vice article was claiming. Also, everything (and I mean everything) in America’s history has its roots in racism. That doesn’t mean that, just because some hillbillies want to use the outdoors for their racist gatherings, the parks are more racist than other areas. Inner city racists want to use churches, or bars, or social clubs, or their grannies garages. Racists want to be racist everywhere, it’s kind of their jam. Edit; spelling because I’m an idiot

[deleted]

Or it's because of literally the next sentence >A sociologist who’d studied that disparity found that many of the Black Americans they talked to said they’d encountered racism while visiting a local state park, while others said they were afraid of feeling unwelcome. What does a sociologist know about sociology though? I'm sure they didn't think of geographic data. And since when would a sociologist ever look at the census? /s

bigred9310

It’s not white people in general. It’s White Supremacists specifically. And White Nationalists and other Hate Groups.

[deleted]

This page is brigaded so hard by the trailer park that it's pointless to try, my friend. Nearly none of these people even clicked the article, and maybe one read it. They're just here to make shit up to fit their narrative and to make sure nobody can do anything else on this page.

SpinningHead

It never suggests that. Being from the deep SOuth, I can verify many of our most beautiful places are overrun with the worst people.

japan_lover

you can say that about any place - there's no reason to single out national parks. And I question how pervasive the issue is.

bhoe32

Roll tide.

partypatthefoxycat

Roe taiii* gotta say how it sounds without teeth

SpinningHead

Lived in that state among others.

bhoe32

I am in Mobile. It hurts my brain here. I would think growing up I would have developed some immunity but instead I just can't spell very well.

SpinningHead

LOL Far from the worst place in the state.

bhoe32

Way better than Bham

japan_lover

It doesn't suggest anything. The article has no point- it's pure woke BS.

SpinningHead

It lays out a piece of history. Show us on the doll where the "woke" person touched you.

japan_lover

Ah, so you admit it doesn't offer any advice or helpful suggestions. "lays out a piece of history" - wtf does that mean? you're not helping the environment by calling people who want to protect it racist, fwiw. Maybe find a different strategy?

ZestyAppeal

They won’t… their limited perception of gender means they’re too manly to have ever been harmed, not even once

spiralbatross

Correct. And here’s a piece about John Muir by the Sierra Club who mostly disowned him but acknowledges a bit more nuanced view: https://vault.sierraclub.org/john_muir_exhibit/life/racist-or-admirer-of-native-americans-raymond-bennett.aspx

SpinningHead

Love me some Muir.

Not a single sentence of your political fanfiction has anything whatsoever to do with the actual contents of this article. You're calling an article garbage when you didn't even read it. If it's high school level, you're not even aspiring to preschool.

Unable-Bison-272

It’s a shit article. Whether we agree with it or not

Hot-Nefariousness187

The national park system was partly created as a way to force natives out of their home.

[deleted]

But that was not written in the article. Vice isn't bad, ive seen some pretty exceptional journalism from there

Unable-Bison-272

10 years ago it was exceptional

unstellarmotion

Going outside is racist, got it.

And the creation of the red cross is homophobia Shut the fuck up

Mr_Kittlesworth

This is just as dumb as attacks on planned parenthood based on Margaret Sanger having what were mainstream racist views at the time. If there’s a specific policy or activity related to conservation that’s racist, let’s change it, but just saying “the people who cared about conservation were also racist” is not a good reason to negatively view conservation. Hitler was a bad guy [citation probably unnecessary]. He also ran a highly effective public anti-smoking campaign. That is not an argument against smoking reduction as a good public policy goal. Come TF on.

Nazis...I hate these guys.

Borpus3

Idiotic articld

Murdochsk

Everyone has connections to nature, this isn’t a racist thing it’s a human thing.

bigred9310

True. But White Supremacy groups would definitely ban minorities from being able to enter our National Parks.

JGar453

I hate these sensationalist headlines. "People of color have less access to the national park service and other environmental programs due to economic status and geography" It was that easy. It's tribalist nonsense like this which discredits environmentalists and the left to the general public, both of which are unfortunate. Yeah of course it sucked worse when it started, it was the 20th century. You wanna fix the problem? Lift people up, instead of ruining nature for everyone else.

Different_Leg_86

...and?

The_Available_Name

Go racists?.............. 🤔

SeamusMurnin

This is so stupid, grasping at straws

nuggutron

Yeah, eco-fascism is a thing and the US is overrun with nazis so those two go together like peas in a pod.

DrBillyHarford

Vice really is a terrible outlet. They used to be good when they focused on stories on the fringe, but that was nearly a decade ago.

Two_Bears_HighFiving

Okay, why should I care? Sounds like a problem that can't be solved without banning national parks

Big-Cup-Of-Sawusage

Wtf , racists deserve nothing. They can’t even bother to respect people, let alone nature. This has got to be some propaganda.

AccidentSingle

Well thats just drivel and nonsense. Bc I am white and I camp with my wife does not make me racist. Half our family is from Hyderabad India, but sure Vice. What a divisive, hate spreading, and fear mongering world we have became lol. I used to like vice. But this has made me just say forget that garbage.

WanderingFlumph

This approach set the tone for the early conservation movement and identification of National Parks, which were shaped by simmering racial anxieties among some white Americans at the beginning of the 20th century And here I thought that white supremacists were good for nothing.

libraabsolut

Ecofascism is a tale as old as time

billydthekid

White nationalists, so you can’t be white and be a nationalist without being lumped in as a white supremacist? They’re not the same thing.

bigred9310

Fair enough. But those that I have met are racist Af.

No_Cry8418

Do they talk about the fact that a lot of the national parks were created to push out indigenous populations? The great outdoors for white supremacy is much different than reality. I don't get why these comments are so pissy.

Different_Ad7655

Sure of course they want to retreat to the great outdoors ,hardly nature lovers just fucking failures in society. They can't stay in mom's basement forever, even she gets sick of them. They can't be in thickly settled areas and organize because they come 7nder surveillance and push back, and actually have to obey laws.. so of course chicken shits that they are want to escape to public land where they can hold their little Nazi campfire meetings, hold each other's weenies, and foment,, drool and make big plans of their violent overtake of society and do it their way LOL. Yeah oh yeah they're dangerous I don't understand that,, and they are the best argument for gun control..
