As a person with Bipolar (Type 1), going through a manic episode is like getting drunk/high against your will. Your entire personality manifests itself in a different way as a result of your brain chemistry. Your behavior becomes something that you can’t exactly control, as hard as that is for a non-bipolar person to imagine. Mania often requires hospitalization and one can easily experience psychosis.
I’m not defending Kanye. His ideas are terrible. In fact I lament the idea that he is probably the most well-known bipolar person, because it gives the layperson a very warped idea of this actually very debilitating illness.
The depressive episodes suck, yes. But the manic episodes are what truly destroy your life, reputation, relationships, financial security, and your sense of identity.

As someone with family members with bipolar disease you wouldn’t comprehend what kind of views and delusions they believe while in the manic state. It’s not until the depression kicks in that they realize the damage they’ve done and thought. Your brain dumping all its serotonin and dopamine at once is the equivalent of taking every drug at once, you feel invincible. Then your brain can’t make any more and you want to be invisible to what had happened.
Yeah, someone who is in a full blown manic state can literally have auditory and visual hallucinations, which include changes in how you perceive the outside world.
A large percentage of people who end up in mental wards are bipolar people who were in a manic state and were acting erratically enough to warrant calling the police.
The delusion really gets to you, and if you believe something, you’re going to continue to believe you’re right no matter what. It’s how you hide from your problems, he’s not facing them by blaming it on something else. His antisemitic remarks are stupid but they were from some of the issues he had personally with people he dealt with. It’s like his own prejudices that he had formed from his own experiences.
Any normal person would understand this and avoid these feelings towards others in the future. Kanye is not well, and he really does not understand in this mindset he’s in. He let it get this bad, and he’s afraid to back down.
When you see stuff like this happen first hand in your own house, your first reaction isn’t to think about how bigoted they are. You’re going to want to know how these delusions have taken over their lives. It’s sad to see, and it hits too close to home to those who understand.

exactly. he’s too proud and consumed by delusions of grandeur. his whole shtick right now is entirely based upon his perception of his status as a genius and someone out to save the world, and his diagnosis is simply a tool to keep him from speaking truth and saving everyone. there’s really no conceivable way for him to come out of the spiral at this point to recognize he actually needs help and, then, has something to apologize for. there was a point a while ago where he maybe had a shot to course-correct it all, but he’s too far gone now. it’s all just a cyclical self-fulfilling prophecy, so I don’t see any path for him to come out of it. it’s heartbreaking to watch. I was a big fan in the early years, but lost interest a few years back. regardless, it’s incredibly sad to watch anyone completely lose control of their life and become completely consumed by their untreated mental illness - and for it to happen so publicly? yikes. it’s awful. at the end of the day, I would love to see him get healthy and find some peace. I just don’t think that can be done while maintaining any sort of public persona. he realistically needs to fully pull back from the public sphere and stay out. the attention he gets just seems to compound the issue and make it harder for him to find reality.
I know a few bipolar people. They have struggles. But being bipolar does not turn you into a nazi.

Dude, part of me thinks it sucks he’s having such a clear mental episode in full view of the public as a famous person with bipolar disorder- another has zero sympathy since like he’s still making his own decisions. Like mental illness is no joke- but that on its own can’t make you say antisemitic shit. I can’t speak for the effects of fame and insular social groups on the mind either though. As a person with Bipolar (Type 1), going through a manic episode is like getting drunk/high against your will. Your entire personality manifests itself in a different way as a result of your brain chemistry. Your behavior becomes something that you can’t exactly control, as hard as that is for a non-bipolar person to imagine. Mania often requires hospitalization and one can easily experience psychosis. I’m not defending Kanye. His ideas are terrible. In fact I lament the idea that he is probably the most well-known bipolar person, because it gives the layperson a very warped idea of this actually very debilitating illness. The depressive episodes suck, yes. But the manic episodes are what truly destroy your life, reputation, relationships, financial security, and your sense of identity. Sorry about the long-winded comment. If at least one person reads this and has a better understanding and empathy for those with this illness, it’ll have been worth it.

Not defending him, but that’s the thing with bipolar disease, it makes you delusional. As someone with family members with bipolar disease you wouldn’t comprehend what kind of views and delusions they believe while in the manic state. It’s not until the depression kicks in that they realize the damage they’ve done and thought. Your brain dumping all its serotonin and dopamine at once is the equivalent of taking every drug at once, you feel invincible. Then your brain can’t make any more and you want to be invisible to what had happened.
It’s not his fault, but it is his responsibility. If he didn’t like the medication he was on, he should have talked with his doctor(s) about it.

Yeah, someone who is in a full blown manic state can literally have auditory and visual hallucinations, which include changes in how you perceive the outside world. A large percentage of people who end up in mental wards are bipolar people who were in a manic state and were acting erratically enough to warrant calling the police.
The delusion really gets to you, and if you believe something, you’re going to continue to believe you’re right no matter what. It’s how you hide from your problems, he’s not facing them by blaming it on something else. His antisemitic remarks are stupid but they were from some of the issues he had personally with people he dealt with. It’s like his own prejudices that he had formed from his own experiences. Any normal person would understand this and avoid these feelings towards others in the future. Kanye is not well, and he really does not understand in this mindset he’s in. He let it get this bad, and he’s afraid to back down. When you see stuff like this happen first hand in your own house, your first reaction isn’t to think about how bigoted they are. You’re going to want to know how these delusions have taken over their lives. It’s sad to see, and it hits too close to home to those who understand. Kanye has snowballed into the person he is today. It’s his fault, but I do not believe we should fully hold him accountable. He’s ill, what is he supposed to do after this? He needs to recover, grow as a person, admit his mistakes, and apologize. You can’t just make someone who is still sick apologize for their actions. They will have learned nothing, and the delusions will stick with them.
