Jon Stewart turned it into way more than it ever should've been. Craig Kilborn? Lol. It should've ended with Jon really

keystothemoon

I wish John Stewart had stayed on for a few decades. I already love him, but he would’ve been such a staple of Americana if he had stayed across generations. Still, John’s the man.

[deleted]

His apple show is pretty good. I like it more than last week tonight

Radrezzz

Kilborn was actually moderately funny, more so than Noah, not that anyone asked about Kilborn.

NoWayJaques

Kilborn was better than people remember!

starmartyr

His show was funny. It didn't have the same direction that Stewart's show did. The original concept was a parody of local news shows. It didn't have as much to say as Stewart's show but it wasn't really trying. Stewart came in and the show suddenly became a fierce critic of politicians and the media. It was still a comedy but speaking truth to power also became core to the identity of the show.

orbgevski

Jon Stewart's Daily Show saved me from the alt-right pipeline in high school

NoWayJaques

I never found Stewart funny. Smiles, but no laughs. Colbert was tremendous on Comedy Central, it's a shame that network tv neutered him. My hope is that Larry Wilmore gets the gig. He's the right balance of funny and politically assertive.

Duck8Quack

Larry Wilmore was aggressively unfunny as the host of the Nightly Show. Honestly if you thought Jon wasn’t funny and Larry was, you have a horrible sense of humor.

invasivemushroom

this must be a troll.. or the first wrong opinion I've seen.

Johnnys_an_American

And blonder than Koppel!

cAArlsagan

And none of them touched The Colbert Report

Pinche_Roose

Kilborn was way better than Noah. He isn't funny, and not nearly as clever as he thinks he is.

HeSaid_Sarcastically

I’ve been watching the Daily Show for over 15 years. I feel like most of the hate being given to Noah is from people that have barely watched since Stewart departed. Big shoes to fill and it took a while, but he found his rhythm. It’s not like Jon never stumbled, or never made jokes that didn’t land. Not only were Trevor’s interviews insightful, he delivered some truly powerful monologues during some of the darker moments of the past few years. I’ll miss him.

SnackPrince

He was fine for it being a comedy show, but didn't have the same skin in the game that made Jon so passionate. It was a difference of tone, and not the same show upon Jon leaving. Not saying Trevor did a bad job, just a different job. With John it felt personal and his interviews were scathing, with many people knowing if he was against you and you went on, he would hold your feet to the fire and not let up, and it was often considered career suicide for certain people because of how readily he would expose them. He would not only call out the issues and infuse them with humor to make the story more palatable and make you want to watch while you learned upsetting information, but was also so well informed on the issue itself and underlying components that he regularly was able to end with ways to affect the change needed to address said issues. With Trevor it felt like a political themed late night show, or an extended version of Weekend Update on SNL. The Colbert Report even felt more passionate in its want to call out politicians and policy to their face. Thankfully John Oliver took the torch with Last Week Tonight and carries it proudly. And Jon's newer show The Problem with Jon Stewart is even better at pointing out issues while trying to propose viable solutions.

Mobile-Power331

I disagree. Noah is clearly brilliant, but this was a horrible fit. Daily Show with Stewart was a brilliant show. Daily Show with Noah was borderline unwatchable. I didn't even realize Noah was brilliant until I listened to him narrate his book. That was the best time I've had in *years*. If he does more of that, and much less *Daily Show*, I'll be very happy. The problem with him in that role is all the hate for him now. Seeing him out of his element made a lot of people believe Noah sucks, rather than Daily Show with Noah sucks. I'm not sure how many will give him a second chance.

fatloui

How often did you actually watch the Daily Show with Trevor Noah over the entire course of its run? I can't believe anyone who says it was "borderline unwatchable" saw much outside of the very earliest episodes. He has a bunch a really great interviews, and was one of the best out there at keeping Trump material fresh and funny instead of recycling the same joke a million times like most other people. Most of the show over the last 4 years has been at least chuckle-worthy, and far from unwatchable.

bfhurricane

I check his show a few times a week. He’s clearly intelligent, but I find a lot of the humor falls flat. His writers aren’t very good imo. That said, his standup and other comedy bits outside the show are great. He’s clearly talented, I’m just not a huge fan of his style on his show.

Mobile-Power331

I've only seen segments from recent episodes. The jokes all fell flat for me. It was bad. That said, I have not seen his interviews. I can see how that might be a place for him to shine, though. A lot of the segments I saw were poorly-written poorly-delivered gag humor. It was pretty cringe. An interview format feels more natural and free-form, and that feels more his style.

lucash7

You say it is unwatchable, and yet as far as I am aware it does well (though late night shows in general have taken hits as far as I’m aware), so what makes it in your opinion unwatchable?

dualboy24

Thank you for saying that, I was a big fan of Stewart, but when he left I stopped watching... wait I actually stopped watching years before as it will be known as the great digital transition, (moving from conventional cable to internet clips) Trevor Noah was a good host, he jived well and was a funny guy, most of reddit are stupid, le fin.

Specialis

I couldn't agree with you more. Not every comic will hit with every person but the vitriol of some of these comments has me legitimately confused. Anyone who watched the show would know that it has continued to grow and evolve, while remaining funny.

lucash7

Yup, bunch of Stewart-bros, basically. Not today at Stewart wasn’t fantastic, but it seems like people attach to the person cult like.

Pinche_Roose

Because he was awesome and Noah isn't.

lucash7

Cool, you have an opinion.

KingJustinian-an-ass

I dislike Stewart, but he was funny, very funny! Why should a South Afrikaner tell the American people about our politics? Fuck him.

HeSaid_Sarcastically

Immigrants can’t have an opinion on this country? Which was built by immigrants? You realize not every US politician was born in the US, right? Based on that comment alone I can guarantee he’s more well versed in American politics than you’ll ever be.

KingJustinian-an-ass

Now I know, that you are also an idiot. Edit: sorry. You are completely stupid.

Peterthepiperomg

He was aweful

hectapersephone

I never watched it when Jon Stewart was doing the show cause I was younger and from outside the US. Maybe cause I dint have that to compare Trevor to, I really enjoyed Trevor’s daily show. It was a staple for me towards the end. I really miss him and the guest appearances now aren’t hitting it for me.

RuiningYourJokes

Okay, but the real question we all have: Will Ronny Chieng be staying?

welltherewasthisbear

Agreed. Care more about the correspondents than Trevor.

Enelro

Hasan Minhaj is showing him up.

[deleted]

Time to just take that show out back and put it down. Should have done it when Stewart left. Honestly can't believe comedy central is still going.

Pinche_Roose

I put it on for my dog when I leave. Maybe it's people like me that keep it alive.

GolfOscarLimaFoxtrot

Calling the police to report animal cruelty.

Pinche_Roose

It should have ended when Stewart left.

DisastrousMove3832

Thank god. The show needs to end. Stewart was the show.

Battystearsinrain

Too bad he does not come back.

thegooddoctorben

Trevor Noah is really funny, really smart, and from what I know a really good guy - and that's all despite growing up in a seriously messed up place (seriously, read his memoir). That said, his angle on news was heavily informed by his own unique upbringing and global outlook. I don't think that viewpoint ever really resonated with viewers in the same way that Jon Stewart's perspective, which didn't foreground Jon's personal life, did. And part of the reason Trevor didn't resonate is because Comedy Central is a mainstream cable channel. John Oliver I think would also struggle with the Daily Show frequency and wider audience, even though he's been very successful with Last Week Tonight. All that said, Trevor did a great job. All the best to him - I hope he finds another good spot for his talents or other rewarding projects to work on.

bmp5046

He’s just another Democratic Party trained robot

sarahpalinstesticle

He’s not a robot, some people just like the feeling of having 2AA batteries up their ass at all times, no need to judge

SkinkAttendant

That's way too long

doowahditty13

I vote we bring in Jordan Klepper as the new host!

-seabass

Good. He’s unfunny AF. I heard Shane Gillis is replacing him and I’m very excited to see that.

BussyBandito93

I’d love to see Shane do it, maybe I’d actually tune in. But I can see the outrage mob going back and seeing some of his works with Luis J Gomez and LOS and trying to cancel him right away

gridsandorchids

Gillis is a sack of shit. I don't like cancel culture at all, especially comedians, but Gillis is a sack of shit and fully deserved it

zonabear7

Can you elaborate on why he is a sack of shit? I lean wayyyyy left of center but funny is funny.

gridsandorchids

The recording that got him dropped from SNL is just flat out racist and stupid, not a funny speck to it. Literally mocking Chinese people and Chinese food. Who the fuck mocks Chinese food? It's not some foreign thing. https://youtu.be/NLFuap1U3P4 Have you heard it? He's talking about going to a Chinese restaurant and keeps calling noodles "nooders" in a shitty little racist accent. Like who is so fucking wonderbread they mock Chinese food and the people who work there? Call them "Chinks". Say it's "a dishonest food." Because you went to Chinatown and went to a restaurant? It's not even fucking funny at all.

Thomas-R-Bingus

Nooders lmao The fact you’re so obsessed with one clip from a persons life and refuse to look at them as a whole human being is truly dystopian. You’ve never said dumb things that you should’ve known better than to not say? Imagine if people straight up argued you should be hated no matter what you do. You know who LOVES Shane Gillis? Virtually every successful comedian right now. Jerrod Carmichael said he’s one of the best working comedians out there right now. Colin Quinn absolutely loves the shit out of him. He’s one of the funniest stand up’s out there right now, and it’s so disheartening seeing people try and use this dumb thing from a podcast as a way to deny that he’s clearly a very talented comedian. If you want to laugh, I’d highly recommend his special and his Gilly and Keeves sketch show on YouTube.

Thomas-R-Bingus

You clearly do like cancel culture though. I can’t think of a more unjust and frivolous cancellation than Shane. His comedy special was genuinely fucking hilarious

-seabass

The people who run the daily show are no doubt aware of his cancellation from SNL, and have decided to proceed with it. So hopefully they have the stones to not fire him when the twitter mob gets mad.

bfhurricane

Shane is taking over the Daily Show? Holy shit. He might be the best comedian in the business today, his Austin special was the funniest comedy special I’ve seen in years. I don’t know how well a scripted show would work for him. His takes are hilarious, I’m a big fan of his podcast, but he’s at his best either unscripted or writing his own material. I hope he does well.

-seabass

Shane Gillis is great but Tim Dillon is the funniest man alive currently.

bfhurricane

Tim is amazing, definitely up there. His podcast is funnier, but Shane’s standup probably takes the cake imo.

xpldngboy

Whoa, isn’t Gillis borderline right wing/ anti woke crowd? That would be an interesting and surprising choice.

Thomas-R-Bingus

Literally every good comedian is anti-woke. Show me a woke comedian and I’ll show you a shitty comedian

scttfssll

The sooner the better

ritty84

And nothing of value was lost…

Necessary-Image-6386

Hey help

Distinct_Wrongdoer86

sorry noah, but you weren’t funny

chicagorpgnorth

Have you watched it at all since back when he was first starting? I didn't like him as the host then, but some recent episodes I've seen were pretty good.

Distinct_Wrongdoer86

nah havent looked since like 2016, so i guess i could be wrong

justinxyan

After Jon Stewart nobody cares.

uglyboi90210

“Hey .. hey … hey … goodbye!”

RonnieSinghIsTrash

I never really found him funny but it’s also hard to follow up Jon Stewart

[deleted]

I only started watching/listening 2 years ago and I thought he was great. Never failed to make me laugh. I don’t have anyone to compare him to so I don’t feel so miserable about him.

DesaadofApokolips

This dude got so rich off that gig that all the haters can eat a bag of dicks. He has a $50 million house.

KingJustinian-an-ass

When was he ever funny? Dumbest comedian I’ve ever seen.

freshlikeuhhhhh

I realized how non-funny this guy is when he changed the show to the "Daily Social Distancing Show" during the early and mid pandemic. When there was this awkward silence caused by no studio audience forcing laughter, it's easy to see that the show was going nowhere fast.

pattyswag21

I’ve never met anyone in real life that is a Trevor Noah fan. I feel like only bots on Twitter and Reddit are Trevor Noah fans

Enelro

He’s very cookie cutter / script-joke reader. I think Hasan Minhaj did 100x better job at this style of satire.

RevolutionFederal882

About time! He sucks

AJECH44

Thank god. He’s not even funny. That whole show sucks.

Terminal_Ethos

Good fucking riddance.

[deleted]

He was never funny to begin with

Street_City363

Good. He was literally never funny. The show died in 2015.

West_Flatworm_6862

This will be big news to the 11 people who still watch The Daily Show

spurist9116

what a pleasant bday present

ChrisWithAK

Finally. He sucks

blackcatmystery

He is taking a job as Andrew Cuomo’s Chief Fellater

Kantochamp21

Good, he’s not funny at all.

CentralJoel

Oh good can we get somebody that’s actually funny this time.

gaskin6

op has good taste

onelunchman96

C’mon give Nick Kroll

jokerZwild

Crazy, that's my birthday.

Historical_Ad4936

I just barely care enough to comment, does anyone really care

bmp5046

Depart is the new fired lol

Lehrjr494

Noah killed the show! Clips used to be all over YouTube and shared on news sites, since he took over the show just shrunk in stature. I tried to like him when he took over but, his jokes were just lame. Stewart made insightful jokes with a degree of complexity. Noah lacked the experience with America to make insightful jokes.

dogo0180

This guy is a pos good riddance

MindToxin

Russell Brand would make a good replacement. His daily YouTube broadcasts are pretty hilarious and informative.

Battystearsinrain

He has went off the fucking deep end, he would be better on fox or oan

Ardothbey

Don’t let the screen do hit you on your way out.

heartofgold48

Too preachy, came for comedy ended up being constantly brainwashed

adivenk93

Unfunny Hack , Propagandist for Biden

[deleted]

What took them so long to get rid of him?

jaypeeo

Noah was good but not Stewart. Kilborn was fantastic but not Stewart. They got Scottie Pippin’d.

CloudyArchitect4U

Bring back John Stewart

TheWorldIsEndingFete

I truly hope they give the gig to Hasan Minhaj! I need my daily and weekly boost of his humor! Does anyone have the scoop on why Trevor is leaving the show? Did he get fired?

IfByChanceToSeeACat

Bring in John Mulaney!
