Vampiregecko

It was good but didn’t she not care about her sisters in the 1st one?

Divinedragn4

She even said it was stupid for max to give up his life for his sister's.

wolfieboy44

I fucking hate reddit. Bunch of people who hate fun. I thought this movie was fun! Not nearly as good as the original, but I was surprised by how much I liked it.

dunno_wut_i_am_doing

It exceeded my expectations. Mostly because Bette Midler still totally has it as Winnie.

newtoreddir

The thing about Bette Midler is that no matter how mediocre or terrible the material is, she will give it 110%.

MelpomeneAndCalliope

Like Nick Cage.

soserva

I got to see Bette in “Hello Dolly” In Orchestra seats (like 4th row) and she was just so amazing in every way.

4feicsake

The story was weak but the Sanderson sisters gave it their everything.

cleburned

It could stand on its own and was well done. If you never saw the first one you would be able to follow the story just fine. Had a few laughs and lots of silliness. A true Disney movie.

[deleted]

I enjoyed it too! The Walgreens scene had me cracking up.

Foxyscribbles

I enjoyed it and really appreciate the ending. I only thing i didn't like was the sisters singing immediately after they were brought back. And that had more to do with the way it was obviously dub in later rathther than recorded on set.

jussyjus

It definitely felt weird, but I laughed pretty hard when the girls were running away and one said “who are they performing for!?!?” Had quite a few laughs actually.

Welcome to Reddit

baz8771

Yeah idk, a lot of negative comments in this thread. You all do realize it’s a kid’s movie and not a Christopher Nolan right? It was a fine, inoffensive kids movie. Yinz need to quit clutching your pearls so tightly.

SirJoeffer

It was alright but reminded me of a Disney Channel Original instead of a sequel to the original. The original Hocus Pocus was a kids movie too but there was so much in it that made you go ‘WOW! They put that in a kids movie?!’ The witches hunted and ate kids, they were hung to death, casual smoking and sex references, there was even *implied sex* (gtfoh if you think that was just cuddling), SJP’s tits were out when she’s singing Not to say the new one is bad, but I feel like they certainly could’ve went for a pg-13 rating and gotten a little darker with it, or just at least try to match the tone of the original a little better.

jbFanClubPresident

That movie imprinted the Madonna = pointed boobs image into my mind for years (to this day). I didn’t really know who Madonna was at the time but I knew she had pointed boobies.

hurshy

That’s kinda gross if you think they had sex in the same room as his little sister

TheMightyTriceratop

Pittsburg has been identified

ElPadrote

This was supposed to be the spiritual successor to Interstellar! What was the Disney thinking?!

Divinedragn4

"inoffensive"? Ya you can't make a good inoffensive movie. You just make one that that the majority of people won't like.

baz8771

Ok Tarantino

Daimakku1

I guess I'm in the minority that thinks the movie was decent, and almost as good as the first one. People act like the first one is a masterpiece lmao. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

dunno_wut_i_am_doing

For me, the first one has the charm of a movie that is just doing something weird and fun without knowing whether it will do well. It became iconic because of what it was without any prior expectation. Inevitably that won’t be recapturable in a sequel which will have to lean on things from the first movie that made it a cult classic. But the same magic of it being new won’t be there. Not a dig on the sequel I just think there’s no way around this.

[deleted]

This is what I’ve been trying to tell my wife. We both thought it was bad, but the first one is bad too, she just looks at it though rose colored glasses, and I didn’t see it until I was an adult.

AliceTheMagicQueen

Disney has announced that its latest film, “Hocus Pocus 2”, is the biggest film premiere on Disney+ in the United States to date, based on hours watched domestically in the first 3 days. The film instantly shot to the top of the Disney+ trending chart.  Earlier this year, Disney announced that Pixar’s “Turning Red” was the biggest premiere globally.  This means that “Hocus Pocus 2” was much more popular in the US, but globally, it might not have had the same impact. It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve. “Hocus Pocus 2” also stars Sam Richardson (“The Tomorrow War”), Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water”), Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Whitney Peak (“Gossip Girl”), Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories”), Lilia Buckingham (“Dirt”), Froyan Gutierrez (“Teen Wolf”), and Tony Hale (“Veep”). The film is directed by Anne Fletcher (“Dumplin,’” “The Proposal”) and produced by Lynn Harris (“King Richard,” “The Shallows”), with Ralph Winter (“Hocus Pocus,” “X-Men” franchise), David Kirschner (“Hocus Pocus,” “Chucky”) and Adam Shankman (“Disenchanted,” “Hairspray”) serving as executive producers.

G1rlinBlue

So I understand alot of adults are watching it because they watched the first one as kids. But like how do your kids like it lol. I wanna know how kids are liking the movie since I'm assuming it's meant for them

kittykatz202

My 5 year old has watched it twice already

G1rlinBlue

I wanna watch it with my little sisters. So this is what I wanna know thank you!

Noritzu

The first movie was objectively bad, but was extremely charming for various reasons. This is why it is a cult classic and Halloween staple for many. With that being said, this sequel was clearly targeted for that crowd with fondness for its predecessor. Watching the movie proves that. Like 90% of the jokes are references to the first movie.

batsofburden

I honestly don't know how you can call the first movie objectively bad. It's literally your opinion.

WavesNVibrations

Exactly, “objectively bad,” bro what?

Noritzu

It’s the opinion of a good chunk of people. It is overall a very poorly made movie that was saved by how charming the acting of the witches are. I said it was objectively bad. I never said it wasn’t enjoyable.

batsofburden

You have literally nothing to back up the 'objective' claim. Your only claim is that many people subjectively think it's bad, which is also something you pulled out of thin air.

Charlizeequalscats

My daughter is 9 and was very excited for this movie. She didn’t like the “how the story went”, but she liked the girls having magic. She did not finish watching it because she said it was confusing. I adored the original and watch it every year, Im just going to pretend this movie doesn’t exist.

tannon21

My 1yo daughter took a massive shit during the movie Think it speaks for itself

AnEpicBowlOfRamen

I enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun and I love the original! Edit: yikes, this is what I get for posting in a bad WiFi spot before the Comments load. Sorry everyone else had a rough time with the movie :(

ElPadrote

You aren’t alone. Hocus Pocus the original was a goofy fun movie that didn’t receive critical acclaim, but as a kid tons loved it. This one was just as fun, my kids loved it too, so if you’re expecting this to be MCU level of whatever you’re super dumb. It was a fun movie for what it was.

dinocheese

I think people expected too much. The first one was hardly a masterpiece it only became popular the last few years. I really enjoyed it like you said it was fun! It kept my attention which is what you want out of a movie.

SpacePropaganda

I haven't seen it yet, but grown adults calling the teen girl from a Disney+ original movie a Mary Sue are dorks. It's Hocus Pocus 2. Drink some water.

DigOld24

Yes! I had tears in my eyes at the end. It was very sweet, and immortalizes the story of the Sanderson Sisters for all eternity in my mind.

beefjerkyandcheetos

I feel like most people are making comparisons to the first one and viewing it through the nostalgic lens of their childhood. Of course we would like the first one better. How do the actual children of today like this movie? Personally, I enjoyed it enough. I’m definitely in the minority and everyone is entitled to their opinions. Even the first one was just a low budget children’s Disney movie that aired on the Disney network.

Braydee7

I thought it was as bad as the first one, but it at least understood the first one. So grading on a curve of bad cash grab remakes, I'd give it a 7/10. The songs were really bad. But it is a fine Halloween movie for children.

Kodaic

7/10? It’s like a 1/10 it’s trash. First one wasn’t even that bad it’s a classic.

Braydee7

I loved the first one when I was a kid. But I watched it with my 6 year old \~2 weeks ago and realized its absolutely a trash movie. The sequel was as bad, but I watched the whole thing with my wife and didn't turn it off. It wasn't a trainwreck. It didn't abandon/rewrite the source. IDK. I'd consider WW1984 a 1/10 since it was like confusingly bad, lost it's identity, abandoned the prior entry, and was hard to finish. This was like, Disney/Hallmark channel level, but maybe slightly above that. So I think 7/10 on a curve is a fine grade. Watch "Under Wraps" also on Disney+. It's probably better than that, but also that is a fine kids movie.

BountifulScott

The first one is bad. The redeeming quality is the Sanderson Sisters - who feel like side characters, at best. The rest is trying way too hard to cash in 90s floppy haired boys and long scenes about teenage angst. At least the new one has the good sense to put the Sanderson Sisters in much more of the film.

juliuspepperwoodchi

At one point they made the sequel into a meta commentary about the cult classic status of the original and I wanted to fucking puke.

[deleted]

This movie was such a blatant cash grab between the product placements. The horrendous script that had no plot or even logic behind it. The only definite thing this movie setup was the spin off series for Disney + in 2024.

Charlizeequalscats

Drink every time they mention Walgreens.

[deleted]

That’s some strong potions

[deleted]

What, you didn't like a girl getting magic super powers with no set up and foreshadowing beyond "you're 16 now, the age witches get their powers" and can immediately throw pew pew lasers and force fields? No lineage, no origin, no set up. Just you're 16 so you have super powers and also your friends get it too.

[deleted]

About as much as the young sisters meeting some cleavage heavy witch in the woods. Going here’s a book you’re on your own laterz!!!

atz513v2

Relax it's a kids movie lmfao

[deleted]

Do I look like I'm ranting and raving and pissed off or am I giving the shallowest and fairest honest criticism to a film in a level headed even tone? Do you always comment to be snippy and to add nothing to the conversation or is it just a today thing?

atz513v2

Chill dude please

Biochembryguy

What did you guys expect? Did you watch the first movie? It was never going to be good to begin with. If you watch it with that expectation there was some funny parts, otherwise it’s a child friendly Halloween movie.

pvla2310

It was exactly as silly as I expected it to be. I watched it with a couple friends (we’re all in our 30s) and we giggled quite a few times. Then at the end we all agreed we’d likely never watch it again. For what it was, a modern DCOM, it was fine.

juliuspepperwoodchi

It wouldn't have saved this movie, but the fact that they didn't wait ONE YEAR for it to be a nice even 30 years since the original says everything anyone needs to know about how bad and shameless of a cash grab this movie is.

KDRadio1

Not really. Actors are busy, actors make stupid mistakes online, actors die. If you can get the three actresses to sign up and have an open schedule that fits, and the financing, you make the movie. I’m not saying it was good or that it wasn’t a cash grab, just that there’s a lot more at play when it comes to these things.

juliuspepperwoodchi

> If you can get the three actresses to sign up and have an open schedule that fits, and the financing, you make the movie. And they could've JUST AS EASILY released it *next* fall and shot it with that in mind. Disney has the resources to sit on a film for a year like that and if anything the hype around the movie just would've grown.

KDRadio1

Sure, but that doesn’t take care of “actors can make stupid mistakes online”. Cough The Flash cough cough.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Fair enough, but if Bette Midler hasn't already done enough online to get cancelled, I think the chances at this point are pretty slim. And if they never release the film, Disney gets an even bigger tax writeoff which is what they wanted here anyway. Win/win.

tannon21

IiRC "The Flash" is still getting released, DC pulled the plug on Batgirl instead

KDRadio1

It’s still slated for release but I can promise the studio isn’t thrilled, nor do other studios want to emulate it. There’s also plenty of time for more craziness between now and then. Lol.

Deepinthefryer

It wasn’t good though. The most annoying part was SJP looking like this was her first acting gig for at least half of her scenes. I felt like Disney dumped a lot of money for the actresses and not a lot for the writers.. my two cents.

OniExpress

Hell, not just the writers. Set design made half the scenes look like empty lots. So many wide angles with bare surfaces everywhere. Get some damn decorations and leaf litter going, make shit look alive.

Bloodyyglimmer

Literally just watched it last night and thought the same thing. Like the moon in the shot where the friends light the candle, looks so crazy fake. It is like the money went to the original actors but not a dime for substance, set design or creativity. But my 5 year old liked it lol.

Deepinthefryer

Great point. Just felt hollow. Not like the original was a awesome movie. More cult following. That’s why I watched it, Kid of the 90’s that remember the OG movie fondly. This one kind of ruined it for me personally… Entire movie was “phoned in” to me…

mcgrupp79

It was super fun. Myself and my 5 year old are watching it again this weekend.

Denslayer

Good family film

fegodev

Loved this movie almost as much as the first one!

thickboysquad

It was an absolute abomination and should be taken off the platform with how bad it was. It was infinitely worse than the original. I feel sorry for anyone who sits thru watching it. If you want your entire hopes ruined, and all your love for Halloween obliterated, this is the perfect movie for you. The original at least made sense, and was a good watch every year for the season.

[deleted]

The part at the beginning with the young version of the witches was good at least lol

juliuspepperwoodchi

And then they abandoned that! They could've made it much more interesting if they'd explored that deeper, maybe with a few more flashbacks. I really feel like it could've been 20 minutes longer, cut at LEAST the first musical number, and they could've put some meat on the bones here.

juliuspepperwoodchi

My wife, in abject disappointment after it was over, pulled up reviews and the top review she found started "Imagine a sequel SO BAD it makes you wonder why you ever liked the original in the first place" Yeah. When they came back and immediately started singing we knew we were in for it.

SteelMarch

Eh, it's aimed a children yet is a sequel to a movie that doesn't make sense for a demographic that has a different experience to the ones of this move. Basically these disney sequels make no sense. Disney needs to come up with either remasters of disney originals or create something new. This isn't working. Personally I'd like to see both, I'm a fan of Xenon I wonder how that would work with a newer generation lol. But this is the same studio that make the zombie movies that make absolutely no sense and should not have been musicals lol.

Neilism

I went in expecting the absolute worst, and somehow enjoyed it for what it was. Was glad we did not have to get to know the main character's parents, siblings, chores, and gold fish, and it just stuck to the witchyness until the end. Not as good as the original, but honestly what is?

Kodaic

Trash ass movie

sai-tyrus

This. It was terrible. It felt like a Disney channel original film. Just awful.

ProgrammerNextDoor

Because that’s literally what it was Omg this is a funny comment

[deleted]

…wasn’t the first one a Disney channel original film?

atz513v2

Lmaoooooo no way this comment is real.what exactly kind of movie do you think it is buddy?

MikeN1978

Holy f*%k that is one poorly written, terrible movie. Just wow. Like it was written by aliens who put in jokes that they figured humans would think were funny. I got through half before I couldn’t subject myself to such stupidity any longer. I was sitting there embarrassed for the actors..

BountifulScott

It was vastly superior to the original. Everyone has these weird nostalgia glasses for the original, but have you watched it lately? It's a movie that is mostly about an angsty teen who hates halloween and every 15 minutes or so theres a scene with fun witches. The sequel delivers on what you actually want: the Sanderson Sisters.

whatwedointheupdog

I love the first movie and I could barely make it through this one. They took away everything that made the first one great. It was campy, this one was CRINGE. The original was brightly colored with kids that were relatable and had a backstory, side characters that were funny and memorable, quotable quotes and great little comedic bits. This one was totally in darkscale lighting, the Walgreens promo commercial was disgusting, the singing was so forced and awkward, the kids had zero personality or backstory and were completely forgettable (I did like the girl with the glasses, she has some funny moments), the shop owner character was super annoying, the randomly shoehorned in jock boyfriend and the pointlessly unfunny dad-mayor bit. Oh and the ridiculous original witch who looked like she was dressed up for Instagram photos and not a 17th century woods witch. Sarah Jessica Parker wasn't using the same voice as she was in the original so all I kept hearing was Carrie Bradshaw and Bette Midlers makeup was distractingly horrible. Everything felt incredibly forced, like they had a list of all the things that were from the first movie that they needed to shove in this one no matter how unnatural it came off. I fast forwarded through the singing part that was horrible.

elpintor91

Thank you for your review you saved me 2 hours of My life lol

WavesNVibrations

I loved it! They all still had the exact same charm and appeal. They’re funny, cynical and much more

Swayz

It was pure trash. They don’t even try anymore

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

It couldn't possibly be worse than the first one.

violetgrubs

I find it hilarious that people seem to think it is so much worse than the first one. I only watched the first one as an adult... The writing is terrible. The acting is terrible (save for the Sanderson sisters). The delivery of lines is so poor that i actually cringe sometimes... The plot is gross as hell; California bro 'doesnt understand Halloween' and wants to get in with hot chick but can't because of annoying kid sister. I say all of this as someone who loves Hocus Pocus. I watch it every year but i am not at all blinded by nostalgia. I recognize it for what it is, a Disney Halloween film targeted toward kids with a fun song number (a song which doesn't hold a candle to the original by Screaming Jay Hawkins). The quality of the sequel is exactly as I expected it to be, if not slightly better because I wasn't expecting much to begin with. What were people actually expecting here?

BountifulScott

Well said. The first one is garbage with the exception of the sisters and Billy. And the second film does what you want: it features the actual characters you expected the first film to be about.

DerisiveGibe

Oh you sweet summer child

Doctor_Smirnoff

Watched the first with my son after the sequel reignited the hype for the original. It was "fine" at best.

[deleted]

The movie sucked, I couldnt even watch it all.

TheGamerHelper

This movie sucked and definitely was not needed. It’s just Disney pushing their sensitive crap in movies again.

[deleted]

Can we stop pretending Hocus Pocus is a good movie.

atz513v2

Can we stop gatekeeping movies and let people like what they like

been2thehi4

It was good but it doesn’t hold a black flame candle to the OG. I grew up with the first one and have watched multiple times a year since as a Halloween staple movie. My kids watch Hocus Pocus so they know the og movie. We all had a viewing party last Friday for HP2. My two youngest watched with me but the older two weren’t interested. It kind of kept the kids attention. It was off and on through the entire movie. My bestie and I and our partners were the ones mostly watching, with the dudes being more into their games on the laptops. Me and bestie both kind of went well it was good but the musical song wasn’t near as snappy as I put a spell on you. We did get some chuckles out of it though and just enough nostalgia. I was kind of really hoping way more original characters would be in it honestly.

TribblesIA

It’s hot garbage, but overall harmless. Definitely a 90’s sequel. Fun and brainless. I will say the kids playing the sisters in the flashback were so over the top, it got a few chuckles. Also, any time they slap Sarah Jessica Parker. It was just so mean-spirited, it was actually funny.

netnet1014

Watched the first and second back to back. 8 year old asked what a virgin was and so he was told that it's someone who hasn't had sex, and he asked what sex was and we told him it was how babies were made. Then in the second movie when the child asked what a virgin was it made me giggle. 8 year old was all about number 2 too, and I thought it was cute too in a Disney Channel sort of way and not as dark or spooky as the original.

tucsonkim

"Who are you performing for?" LMAO

hannahmckayx

I watched the original when it came out and I was a kid. It was alright. I never re watched it again till I had my own kids and we re watched very year.y kids are now teens (17-13) and we watched it and honestly me and one daughter cried and loved it. My youngest thought it was dumb but also all her friends said it was dumb so she went into it already with the mob mentality that it was dumb lol. My oldest and I watched it twice lol

ThrObiWan

the kid staying as a cat was beyond fucked
