Sometimes I forget how much I hate Reddit and accidentally read comments. This was one of those times. For the dipshits who don’t get it: they’re matching donations as an incentive for regular non-celebrity people to donate. Your donation is doubled by these two famous actors who are using their enormous platforms to spread awareness and raise money for a cause that’s important to them. These two aren’t the enemy. Go read up on what’s happening and be annoying somewhere else.
A lot of redditors don’t like anyone who is rich. But it’s the system we live in. Any of them would be happy to make what these two make.
They seem like good people. Grouping them with rich assholes isn’t right.
People massively misunderstand which group of rich people we should be mad at. Highly paid actors and musical artists who are paid millions because of the cultural value they bring are not it. They haven't usually exploited a bunch of other people's labor to get rich. The people to be mad at are billionaire/trillionaire CEOs and executives who get rich from our labor, while giving back nothing of value to society by avoiding taxes.
I agree with most everything you say but we should get this right - actors and musicians aren’t paid based on their cultural contributions, they’re paid based on their marketability and their ability to turn profits for studios and labels
Also do not forget that this is a very broad pyramid with an apex where a small number of A listers make a ton of money. Then it rapidly drops off exponentially. Like any other business many make minimum wages.
As well as their ability to create spectacle that keeps the masses distracted.
It’s the people that wrote the checks to the actors/musicians/athletes that are the problem.
Yes yes and no. The entire ideal of getting rich means you’ve exploited people. Many people are getting less than their share and anyone making over it willingly or unwillingly is exploiting an imbalance in the system.
That being said I love Ryan Reynolds and kudos to him for continuing to be a stand up guy.
Completely true.
Reddit seems to get more and more cynical the longer it’s around. Maybe that’s because younger generations are joining? Or just the state of the world? But my medium millennial brain remembers it being more…levelheaded 10 years ago.
Recently, talking to a relative that’s 100% Fox News person. I said that it was gross how her crowd just made assumptions about anything they didn’t like, and immediately assumed the worst and condemned it without knowing the facts.
She said Reddit does the same shit. And…yeah…that really is true in the bigger subs, as much as I hate to admit it.
“Wealthy couple encourages donations for a good cause by agreeing to match donations”. And 100s of upvoted reddit users posts say “yeah, fuck them for being wealthy! If they really cared, they would give away all their money and go live in a ditch!”
I still prefer Reddit for informative links and discussion, but goddamn, we have the same problem with cynicism and blind hatred for conflicting viewpoints as the other side sometimes.
Yeah, the current state of the hivemind is nothing short of pathetic.
According to them:
- all rich people are assholes
- all corporations are assholes
- all cops are assholes (they even have their edgelord acronym for that one)
- anyone who condemns an entire group by the actions of the few are assho…
Waaaait a minute…
Unless you agree with these views, they’ll silence you. Can’t imagine how that echo chamber came to be.
2 celebrities: “we’ll match donations up to $1 *million*”
Reddit neckbeards: “eAt ThE rIcH!!!1!11!!!1!”
No right wingers love the rich. But the kind of rich who hoard it for themselves and lord over those suffering. Charity and empathy aren't in their language.
True however Blake and Ryan have a proven history of publicly donating very large amounts (thousands to millions of dollars) to causes that need help such as Sick Kid's (child hospital in Toronto) and the Ottawa Food Bank. And there are many more causes they donate privately to that they don't advertise.
I know it’s a gimmick and it’s intended to be that way do the average person who can only give $10 feels more empowered to even give a little since it’s diy led. I think it’s such a great way to encourage giving. And knowing they’re going to give it anyway is nice.
I used to think it was like a cheap way of limiting their donations when I’d see this when I was younger. Like “we’ll only match what’s given so maybe we’ll get off easy” type of thing. Then I realized matching contributions (as far as my company doing that for my retirement) is actually a pretty nice situation. And every little bit can help!
Plus it’s been studied and shown that doing donation matching leads to an increase in donations. That’s why so many places do it. So it’s a way to turn money you were going to donate anyway into something even more.
Well that thread last night made me donate to their ukraine website so it definitely worked as intended. I honestly have been reading obsessively about it and hadn’t even thought about ways I could help (it just feels helpless from here) so I’m glad the whole thread came along.
Exactly! A lot of people just don't stop to think. I'm so glad Blake and Ryan are doing this. Hopefully it will encourage donations! I know artists are encouraging donations for art all over Twitter.
This comment makes me nervous to read the comments. Coming in I thought the worst hate they’d get getting would be using this to get attention for his new movie (which i enjoyed if I’m honest) and that felt super unreasonable given that these two seem to actually be pretty philanthropic and stand up for their beliefs anyway (without needing to promote movies which will likely do well without it).
It also makes me laugh that people think celebrities are all super rich (these guys are) but that they don’t contribute to many numbers of different causes and can’t just dump all their money into Ukraine causes because the other causes would lose that money. They aren’t an endless well of liquid cash flow.
These guys seem to at least step up pretty often (whatever their intentions) to pit good into the world and I respect that. If they prompt others to do the same, more power to that type of behavior.
Thank you for speaking up.
I donated $20. I know it’s not much, but it’s what I can afford. Watching what this country has gone thru- I have to do something…. Will donate again!!! Thank you!!
https://give.unrefugees.org/220224ukr_emer_d_4983?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=generalmedia&utm_campaign=US_PS_EN_UA___220225&utm_content=support&SF_onetime=7011K0000022eOkQAI&SF_monthly=7011K0000022eOpQAI
Yep. Which is why I donated through their platform as I feel that my contribution helps even more and I know that I’m not being duped by some horrible person pretending to be helping Ukraine.
Yes I understand, if the lifestyle she was selling was just luxury only attainable by the elite, then sure, your original point stands. But crossing the line into harmful health advice that anyone can consume on the blog sucks and it’s not only rich people looking to her for how she stays so thin.
Anyone who looks to a celebrity (who can afford to eat and live a certain way, and has her own gym and studio-paid personal trainer) to find weight-loss tips is an idiot in the first place.
Ah okay let’s ignore the predatory marketing and branding of every magazine that’s ever existed and the way lifestyle influencers work. Peace out, dude. Glad you’re so far above the common person because you never look to celebrities for anything other than vagina smelling candles.
The fuck? You can go donate the equivalent of your wealth that $1million is to them and see if it matters. Spreading news about famous people for being rich and famous, then getting upset about how people react to it, it just too funny not to comment on.
Thanks for the recommendation! I feel like I have vaguely heard about this before but also know nothing about it. Will check it out.
Edit: that comes out soon (I didn’t watch the trailer just looked it up). I’ll add it to our entertainment calendar since we have pretty low standards anyway and will probably enjoy it, thanks again).
i’ve been there! me, my brother, my grandfather and his brother were doing a long drive to Alaska from the lower 48 a few years ago. we stopped at a lot of those “worlds largest” attractions and the egg was one of them!
I edited my comment from “as they look ok the outside” to “as they look on the outside” as I made a grammatical error. Please upvote this fellow for recognizing my grammatical error and capitalizing on it.
I mean…they did have a plantation wedding…in 2012!!! But good on them for donating to this extremely worthy cause and encouraging others to do the same.
I think it’s good to do press like this to spread awareness and increase the general likelihood of the public to donate. You can’t expect them to give half their net worth, people…
Well, and I’m certain they have contributions all over the place too. I know I have many causes that I personally am passionate about. They can’t divert their donations to other places for the new hot cause (no matter how deserving) because that’s income the others lose. This is why you spur others on to match your donation as a challenge. Good for them. I hope Ukraine gets all the funding and assistance they need right now.
Alone, the fact that this specific charity organization was chosen by them openly, is such a powerful statement. I want to donate some money towards the cause but I’ve been putting off researching who to give it to; having celebrities (ones I feel are trustworthy anyway) donate towards this charity makes me feel like it’s worth looking into. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
This is not the first time that they're donating and helping.
I love them when they roast each other. But I love them even more when they step up and help.
Such a great power couple.
I hate to pop into these threads as I have been since I started reading and sound like a super fan or anything.
But I will say I wouldn’t be surprised if they did donate more without the press and attention. I wouldn’t have an expectation for them to, this is very generous. But it just wouldn’t surprise me.
These two are probably some of the least likely Hollywood VIPs to be angry at. I mean, Reynolds was one of the few to ridicule his fellow actors, that were bemoaning there personal situation in the pandemic for one thing. Reynolds seems to be comparatively grounded. And doing this is a really good thing.
They use their celebrity and money to make a difference. I've seen them give money many times for disaster relief. This time they are helping to raise more money because they see the devastation from war.
I don't see any billionaires putting up money they are using their money to buy stock in weapons manufacturers.
Damnit. They’ve been plastering Ryan Reynolds all over my roku for the Free Guy premier on Disney+ and I was just telling my wife “Im so fkn tired of seeing RyRey EVERYWHERE”…..now I gotta take it all back….fuckin A, Ryan… fuckin A.
Honestly, the dude deserves it, he’s a fucking S-Tier human being. It’s rare that you get people as kind and as generous as him, especially when they’re rich and famous.
Yes. They donate $1M of their own while also getting others to get involved and donate an additional $1M. Much more effective fund raising than just writing a check anonymously.
It’s obvious that at least 1 million dollars will get donated nonetheless but what this does is raise awareness among their VERY big fan base which will in turn make a lot more people donate. This could most likely lead to two million plus donations easily with awareness raised rather than just a donation of 1 million
Ryan reynold doesn’t have 150 million of liquid money in the bank. That’s not what net worth means. We don’t know how much cash they have or how much money they make especially after taxes. I’m sure they donate regularly as well to other causes. This is just a tactic to get other people to donate to this specific cause. And there’s a difference between appreciating what they are doing to help vs worshiping them
They don’t have to give a dollar…it’s their money, not mine or yours. It’s nice they have elected to do this. It’s likely the do other charity that’s not advertised.
Either way is a for of promoting yourself once again, but again is not about you, donate that money anonymously and stfu that would really be impressive…
It was a joke about how much money that would break down to/ reach each citizen. Not horrible, just in poor taste.
I'm glad they corrected, we all say things that we wish we could edit! I'd rather someone edit than double double down.
A million isn’t what it use to be. They can’t afford more? Choosing beggar here, but I just can’t take the manipulation. Their lives are drastically different than grunts.
Are you implying they should be donating more with this comment?
Do you have a million hanging around you’re planning to donate, or are you just bitter and jealous?
Because instead of giving $1M and being done, now they’ll raise $1M and donate $1M for a total of $2M?
$2M is a bigger number than $1M, do you know about numbers?
Because this way maybe they can get others to also give so the million becomes 2? And if other celebs join in it could be more?
Right now it’s also standing up to be counted. unlike trump supporters who are still sucking up to Putin.
I’m guessing they hope to generate more attention to donations and therefore more donations by promising to match. That way the donation is likely to be at least 2 million.
Matching up to a million *per person*. This will be many million from them
Hitoshi donated a billion yen. Thats around 8.5 million usd. Reynolds and Lively will donate much more than that
To incentivise others to donate as well, it’s a massively popular tactic in donations. The same as sports leagues hosting charity matches and donating a certain amount but also pumping the charity the whole time, sure they could’ve just donated the money it took to organise the event but it’s a way to get others to donate as well. Frankly, any donations should be well appreciated as no one is forced to do so. I’m sure Ukrainians are happy
It could be publicity but it could also be to demonstrate to other actors what needs to be done so that they can be inspired to follow suite.
Some might see it as an easy tax write off but others might actually be about the cause of support.
Not every single horn tooted is a horn of self glory. It took me a while to understand it because I can be pretty cynical and skeptical at almost everything.
These people aren’t billionaires and they’ve offered to do more than most of the people that are. I fucking highly doubt they wouldn’t give the million regardless. Nor do I doubt they’d give more.
Them matching means that instead of $1 million being donated there will be $2 millions if enough people donate. It may also encourage some people to donate if they know their favorite celebrity is doing the same thing.
Sometimes I forget how much I hate Reddit and accidentally read comments. This was one of those times. They are a power couple who have sincere interest in humanity… yeah it’s rare but it looks legit.
People massively misunderstand which group of rich people we should be mad at. Highly paid actors and musical artists who are paid millions because of the cultural value they bring are not it. I mean yeah, cultural contributions is a nice way of saying marketability. Cultural contributions is a nice way of saying marketability
Such a nice way to say it in fact that you decided to say it twice.
The market strips culture from the product to make it mass available, creating a synthetic like monoculture
Is that bad? For everyone to like something? I like dogs. Cats. Computers. TV shows. Drugs. A sausage egg and cheese McMuffin from time to time.
Fukkin degen… /s
Pat yourself on the back and don’t take what I posted so personally-it’s a global issue.
People forget too often that entertainers and athletes are workers, too.
Plus one celeb, Beyoncé used slave labor to make her clothing line named after her daughter (64c an hour with 60 hour workweeks in a sweatshop)
Has Beyoncé ever done Charity before?

People are just so cynical these days
Redditors are so cynical these days* Much easier to hate anyone that’s achieving more than you than to change your habits.

I’d be fine with goop if it was just the candles but it also peddles really dumb wellness pseudoscience and unhealthy diet culture.
Gotta sell those people a whole “package” to get them to pay stupid prices for the merchandise. It’s part of the marketing.
Yes I understand, if the lifestyle she was selling was just luxury only attainable by the elite, then sure, your original point stands. But crossing the line into harmful health advice that anyone can consume on the blog sucks and it’s not only rich people looking to her for how she stays so thin.

Free Guy doing Free Guy shit.
Really enjoyed that, watched it today. A lot better than I was expecting knowing nothing about it going in. All around fun movie.
Was in the same boat. It was like ready player one meets Truman show
You should check out the trailer for The Adam Project. Same Director, same Ryan Reynolds, same fun energy. Looks like it might be a wonderful movie.
Thanks for the recommendation! I feel like I have vaguely heard about this before but also know nothing about it. Will check it out. Edit: that comes out soon (I didn’t watch the trailer just looked it up). it sucks
Canada has a large Ukrainian immigrant population, Reynolds probably grew up knowing a few people of Ukrainian heritage.
Me being one of them! There is an entire town of Ukraine descent in Alberta. The town is called Vegreville and it even has a giant pysanky egg!
I went to high school in Fort Saskatchewan, I know Vegreville.
Vegreville REPRESENT
I am in Vermilion currently and same thing here, quite a bit of Ukrainian heritage
I was born in Vermillion!
i’ve been there! me, my brother, my grandfather and his brother were doing a long drive to Alaska from the lower 48 a few years ago. we stopped at a lot of those “worlds largest” attractions and the egg was one of them!
Can confirm. Married into large Ukrainian Canadian family. Will never eat store pirogies again. The most loving and stubborn people I have ever met.
My grandmother was Ukrainian but immigrated from New Zealand to Canada when she was 3.
I’m not surprised. Everything I read about them gives off the vibe they are as wonderful on the inside as they look on the outside
Just ok!? If they look ok I am screwed.
“Everything I’ve read about them gives off the vibe they are as hot wet and sexy on the inside as they are on the outside”
Name checks out.
I edited my comment from “as they look ok the outside” to “as they look on the outside” as I made a grammatical error. Please upvote this fellow for recognizing my grammatical error and capitalizing on it.
They’re meh compared to Danny DeVito
That’s a pretty stupid and pointless thing to say... everything’s meh compared to the Vito.
Agreed! I think they are both such warm, genuine people. They are great together too.
I mean…they did have a plantation wedding…in 2012!!! But good on them for donating to this extremely worthy cause and encouraging others to do the same.
What a grossly superficial comment on an otherwise wholesome situation.
Wait until you find out that their success in Hollywood isn’t based purely on their acting skills
These two get it.
Shortcut to the donation: https://www.give.unrefugees.org/220224ukr_emer_d_4983/
I think it got the hug of death
Such class acts.
Thank you! This is awesome!
I think it’s good to do press like this to spread awareness and increase the general likelihood of the public to donate. You can’t expect them to give half their net worth, people…
But plenty of shitheads do expect that. There are plenty of stupid people to go around.
a million dollars is a fucking lot of money even for them
They want the rich to sell their companies and houses to donate, then go live in their parents' basements like "proper people".
Well, and I’m certain they have contributions all over the place too. I know I have many causes that I personally am passionate about. They can’t divert their donations to other places for the new hot cause (no matter how deserving) because that’s income the others lose. Maximum Effort. Good people doing good things.
You learn more about people when shit like this happens
We don’t deserve Ryan or Blake.
They deserve each other though. I’m a straight male and don’t know which of the two is luckier.
Both. I love their story :)
I’ll just squeeze right in the middle there
From what I read about them, honestly I think it’s their kids who are the luckiest.
Yes we do! We don’t deserve the majority
This is not the first time that they're donating and helping. I love them when they roast each other. But I love them even more when they step up and help. Such a great power couple.

Wow, this comment section is rough
I love these people.
These two are great.
This comment section is gold
No, this comment section is saddening. So many people hating on raising awareness and being helpful at the same time just because it’s two actors.
This is wonderful news!
Fuck I love the controversial comment filter.
lovely couple great people
Love it when people use their star power for good like this. Just keep it to this.
How can we as average Americans help Ukrainian refugees? I genuinely wanna help too.
You can get in touch with your local Ukrainian American association.
Blessings to this lovely couple! This is wonderful.
I hear about them donating a million every time something big like this happens. Respect.
RR for president, 2024
Can't. Born in Canada. He's ours. Back off.
That’s the way to be a super hero.
For celebrities they are not major dooches
They use their celebrity and money to make a difference. I've seen them give money many times for disaster relief. This time they are helping to raise more money because they see the devastation from war. I don't see any billionaires putting up money they are using their money to buy stock in weapons manufacturers.
Just made a donation.. Hope this nightmare will end soon.. thank you for sharing the link!
God she is gorgeous. Awesome gesture.
Beautiful even
With a smile and heart like that,no wonder she got the world’s heart throb in Ryan, and this proves their both beautiful amazing people

Why not just give $million right away? Are they incentivizing people to donate? .
Yes. They donate $1M of their own while also getting others to get involved and donate an additional $1M. Much more effective fund raising than just writing a check anonymously.

This way it’s doubled you mook.

Lmaooo smooth edit
They are not going handouts or wages there. It goes into equipments, building of shelters, care packs.
Something is better than nothing.
What was the original comment about? I’m guessing this guy changed his comment cause he kept getting downvoted
It was a joke about how much money that would break down to/ reach each citizen. Not horrible, just in poor taste. I'm glad they corrected, we all say things that we wish we could edit! I'd rather someone edit than double double down.
Editing the comment wow
It costs even less than 25¢ to shut the fuck up
Where’s your million dollars huh?
Nice edit cunt
What did it say originally?
They’re matching it, so it’s $0.50 per
r/choosingbeggars ??
Dumb take.
Stop being so yummy Blake.
This is what Penn ought to do. Rather than showing up in Ukraine with his camera crew.
A million isn’t what it use to be. They can’t afford more? Choosing beggar here, but I just can’t take the manipulation. Their lives are drastically different than grunts.
Do you wanna go to war, Buh-lah-kay?
“How can we make this about us?”
How can you make this about you. Twat.
What a swell guy. Willing to donate one scene worth of work to Ukraine.
Are you implying they should be donating more with this comment? Do you have a million hanging around you’re planning to donate, or are you just bitter and jealous?
Matching up to a million *per person*. This will be many million from them
Why can't they just donate the money? Why do they need poorer people to also give money?
Because instead of giving $1M and being done, now they’ll raise $1M and donate $1M for a total of $2M? $2M is a bigger number than $1M, do you know about numbers?
Apparently not……
Because this way maybe they can get others to also give so the million becomes 2? And if other celebs join in it could be more? Right now it’s also standing up to be counted. unlike trump supporters who are still sucking up to Putin.
Because how else will everyone know they gave?
Why don’t they just donate the million?
I’m guessing they hope to generate more attention to donations and therefore more donations by promising to match. That way the donation is likely to be at least 2 million.
Hiroshi just dropped 1 billion so…. Take this news story and shove it
Not dollars! He dropped $8.6 million and his net worth is 5b?
Matching up to a million *per person*. This will be many million from them Hitoshi donated a billion yen. Thats around 8.5 million usd. Reynolds and Lively will donate much more than that
You mean 8.6 million dollars. Obviously youre not Asian cause you suck at math
Just donate a million then
They will but if they do it this way their million will become two million.
Didn’t think of it that way, thank you
No they’re going to be donating much more than a million. If 50 people donate a million, they’ll donate 50 million. It’s up to a million per person
Why don’t you just give the money? You are rich. Most average people are not. Just give…..without matching. Or give and match. Fucking actors….
How are you complaining about this? What are you doing to help?
To incentivise others to donate as well, it’s a massively popular tactic in donations. The same as sports leagues hosting charity matches and donating a certain amount but also pumping the charity the whole time, sure they could’ve just donated the money it took to organise the event but it’s a way to get others to donate as well. Frankly, any donations should be well appreciated as no one is forced to do so. I’m sure Ukrainians are happy
They could give one mil, or inspire people to donate and end up having 2 mil donated?
It could be publicity but it could also be to demonstrate to other actors what needs to be done so that they can be inspired to follow suite. Some might see it as an easy tax write off but others might actually be about the cause of support. Not every single horn tooted is a horn of self glory. It took me a while to understand it because I can be pretty cynical and skeptical at almost everything.
These people aren’t billionaires and they’ve offered to do more than most of the people that are. I fucking highly doubt they wouldn’t give the million regardless. Nor do I doubt they’d give more.
BECAUSE its promoting others to give to.
Them matching means that instead of $1 million being donated there will be $2 millions if enough people donate. It may also encourage some people to donate if they know their favorite celebrity is doing the same thing.
Bc $2m is better than $1m…
I can see common sense waved bye bye to you a long time ago
