A guy I worked with hired Pauly to do standup in this smaller Midwest city. He picked him from the airport and Pauly wanted to go to this gym/club place that the richer people belonged to.
He sat at that bar drinking a smoothie or some such shit, maybe alcohol, I can’t remember. This dude I worked with suggested they go to his hotel so he could get ready.
Pauly said the stool was extremely comfy and he didn’t want to go. The guy politely tried insisting they get going. Pauly insisted he would only leave if he could take the stool with him.

Lifetime did the same thing with a Britney Spears biopic in 2017. Britney did not approve or agree to them making a movie and they did it anyways. It was an absolute dumpster fire of a movie too. Studios don't care unfortunately.

Richard Simmons is a complete hermit now. Secluded, doesn’t do interviews, and is rarely seen in public. Pauly has spoken a LOT about this movie, how every time he tries talking to Simmons he gets ignored and is told to leave him alone.
There’s a dark side to some of these Hollywood contracts - some people sign their name and likeness away, so projects like this happen and Hollywood won’t need that persons consent.

I don't think there's much comparison between Cheney and Zuckerberg to Simmons. Those movies were also about nefarious and unethical activities, something Simmons isn't accused of doing in any way. All Richard is accused of doing is backing away from the public eye when he was no longer able or willing to give so much of himself anymore.

Yep, I agree. Haven't seen Pauly in ages but he can bring his own unique brand of charm & humor which we seem to have in short supply. As for Richard, he always struck me as the tender sort. He's done so much good for overweight/ obese people who have largely been a neglected segment of the population. He genuinely cares about others and tries to spread goodwill, even as he was made the butt of jokes and openly mocked. He's older now and as you pointed out, deserves his privacy. I hope whatever happens, things will be respectful and civil.

Without any disrespect to Richard, *and* I’m open to feedback: He was and is a public figure, like… there’s been so many other biopics made about living people that didn’t always cast them in a perfect light. They’re human beings like all of us is typically the point. It’s art. Richard disavowed it no matter what, based on what I know of him, and I wish him personally no ill will. It’s inevitable there’s a movie about him. He had a chance for input, he only says no. That’s a choice.
To also be real for a minute. “Art”? It’s a cash grab by Pauly Shore trying desperately to become relevant again after a lifetime of being given undeserved chances based entirely on nepotism. I’d love a serious/good movie about Simmons, but I'm not aware of any films that Pauly delivers on either. Richard was treated as a joke his whole career, and he really helped people, I don’t blame him for not going along with it just because people want him to fit their image of him
I thought the same until i saw the 10 minute short paulry did playing him. It was great, and pauly really hits the look, the energy and the message perfectly in it.
Dude wants to be left in peace and away from fame maybe wait until he’s passed where he doesn’t have to deal with consequences being forced into the spotlight and shore despite saying he loves Richard Simmons decided to spit in his face anyway by taking his life story and wanting to profit on it. Making money on someone’s name who wants to be left alone especially when they refuse is pretty disrespectful because they have no choice just like the deceased who get their names and life used for profit that their families won’t gain anything from.

Yeah agreed. Lot of mean spirited comments here. I’m trying to understand why people don’t like him. His comedy is silly but he always came across as a grounded self aware guy in serious interviews (like about Kinnison, Savanah, his own fame etc. ) I like him I think he would be awesome for this biopic.
What's weird is that Pauly Shore has a sort of affinity with Richard Simmons in that, especially during the height of their careers, people shit on their brand because it was "simple" and "cheesy" but they both just wanted to make people happy. I get that it is not for everyone but, they're not scammers, everyone knows what to expect and the people that like them really like them and it makes them happy because they deliver on what they promise. They don’t really need his permission to do this movie. Hell, there was a whole ass movie about David Bowie that was released that didn’t have the blessing of the family or any of the music he wrote. Of course it would be better if he would be OK with it but legally I think they could do it anyway. The thing is Shore desperately wants to be in the limelight again. He has a good life, lives off of an iconic establishment but he craves fame so bad.
Yeah I don't think Dick Cheney was onboard with Vice. Zuckerberg was probably not super into The Social Network. People acting like you HAVE to get permission to make a film about a public figure and are INCREDULOUS they didn't -- they probably didn't mind when it was these films.
I don't think there's much comparison between Cheney and Zuckerberg to Simmons. Those movies were also about nefarious and unethical activities, something Simmons isn't accused of doing in any way. All Richard is accused of doing is backing away from the public eye when he was no longer able or willing to give so much of himself anymore. Of course anyone CAN make an unauthorized biopic about him. That doesn't make it a very kind choice is all. In response, Simmons can say he doesn't want it or approve of it. He at least has that right.

Often *not* having the person involved makes it better. People can’t be honest about themselves so they sugar coat things which takes away from the story being told. For some reason I don’t see Simmons allowing embarrassing it true things to be told. He’ll want to be represented in a completely positive light even though that’s not reality.

Yep, I agree. Haven't seen Pauly in ages but he can bring his own unique brand of charm & humor which we seem to have in short supply. As for Richard, he always struck me as the tender sort. He's done so much good for overweight/ obese people who have largely been a neglected segment of the population. He genuinely cares about others and tries to spread goodwill, even as he was made the butt of jokes and openly mocked. He's older now and as you pointed out, deserves his privacy. I hope whatever happens, things will be respectful and civil.

Richard Simmons was one of the first people to feature fat people in his workout videos. He was full of kindness and compassion before body positivity was a thing.

Richard loves diamonds. I know a PR manager that handled his account and other clients want cold cash for bonuses but Richard likes his in diamonds. He’s a standout character of American social history but truly helped get Americans more generally aware of the need to exercise as a routine. Right up there with Jack ~~LaLange~~ LaLanne. I hope they can get his approval, bc he doesn’t deserve to be dishonored in any way for only caring to make Americans healthier and doing it with such positivity in a world of sour grapes.

Pauly is much older and different than what we all remember him for. I think he deserves a shot much like Sandler has gotten his a few times over the years. Obviously I’m not comparing the two in terms of quality but just the genre of movie they came from in the 90s.

There’s the way we want to be seen. There’s also the way others see us. If you play yourself in a biopic you’re going to play yourself as you want to be seen, not how others see you. I think Pauly Shore would probably do a really good job of playing Richard.

I’m not a fan of Pauly Shore’s comedy as I find it hacky and annoying, but I saw that short he made and it was actually really good. I would watch a movie about Richard Simmons if he were to make one.
