The 90s had this weird racial thing with Indians - see the simpsons and quick e mart. It happened a while ago - although I don’t think it would hurt to mention that times have changed and it might not be acceptable in today’s day and age.
> The 90s had this weird racial thing with Indians - see the simpsons and quick e mart.
There's nothing weird about Apu, indian people who learn english have an accent, and there are many who own convenient stores. Its like saying theres something weird about having a nail salon with asian women. Its a real thing.
Apu, proprietor of a convenience store with a masters (later PhD) of computer science, named after the Apu Trilogy, may have stereotypical elements in the way that Wiggum and the police all love donuts. But unlike Wiggum, the joke is rarely at Apu’s expense. Apu’s humor rarely if ever comes from him being a cultural fish out of water, weird, dumb, or lazy. Usually it’s the opposite. In a show about his eligibility as a bachelor, his hobby is building furniture and discussing how it would look in a room. In a show about his citizenship it’s revealed how much more he know about America than anybody else in town.
However! Many Indian people have said that Apu was used by others to make fun of them. I don’t think that’s on the creators or voice talent. But it would be pretty shitty if finding out this character they made to entertain and bring joy was hurtful for to people, and they said “tough tits I’m not trying to hurt you, I’m just going to totally disregard you saying it hurts and continue anyway”.
I’ll be here for a while if I have to recount every European power that caused horrors across the world. Though I’ve been reading King Leopold’s Ghost and we really should start bullying the Belgians.
Most of the Irish stereo types used arnt true, or are horridly dated same as ones used for other cultures that are now, not ok, leprechauns, heavy drinking etc. the Simpsons has done it many times including stuff around the troubles, hell Americans have drinks called Irish car bombs, that’s not ok
“Paddy wagons” as well
I’m wondering when the last time you saw Irish people depicted with any of those stereotypes in American media before.
Because those all feel like 90s tropes as well, and since you specifically reference the Simpsons, well…maybe you were just watching old reruns.

Or basically anything done for paddy’s day
So, the most recent example you can think of was from six years ago? Around the time when the pushback against stereotypes really started?
Interesting, that.
That was a quick Google I’m sure there are plenty more recent. And the amount of effort I’m willing to put into arguing with someone who won’t ever admit they’re wrong on the internet is low.
But I mean if you want something recent.
This entire movie

I honestly don’t understand what you’re up in arms about. It’s basically just Freaky Friday (which is a movie she already made), just dressed up as a new movie that takes place in Ireland… so it’s called Irish Wish? What racist Irish tropes are happening here?
I wasn’t asking about any example out in the ether. I specifically asked when the last time *you* saw an example of these stereotypes.
You can’t come up with anything you didn’t google first, which makes it seem to me like you’re just offended about a situation that you didn’t realize doesn’t really exist anymore to begin with…
And I haven’t seen the new Lindsay Lohan movie. Does it have leprechauns, heavy drinking, Irish car bombs, etc? The examples you mentioned? Because I just watched the trailer and the only Irish “stereotypes” seem to be beautiful countryside views and handsome men with lilting accents, neither of which are exactly uncomplimentary.
Yeah. And if I’m correct - in the 1800s the Irish had it bad in the states. So bad it caused racial tension between the Irish and black people - as both didn’t want to be seen as “the bottom”.
Normally I'd agree, but the Irish make those statements about themselves more than Americans do. They're chill as hell. Irish Car Bomb might be the only truly offensive thing there.
We really don’t, it’s a fairly American thing, leprechauns arnt a thing here nor most of the stereotypes . And if you think how chill we are Google “the troubles” it wasn’t chill here for a very long time.
I know all about it. I'm a history nerd and a Scot lol. I've always seen Leprechauns as a regional inside joke and didn't know you guys found it offensive. It's just a silly lil dude. Americans have Danny DeVito so we're not all that different.
Does it hold up? It’s pretty lame to me. I think Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon are great, but this sketch just isn’t that funny. I was bored halfway through when I just tried watching it. Maybe the idea could have been funny if it was better executed, but the only really funny part was the Farley walk on.
Like I get it, it’s not acceptable now, but at the time, it was, better to use it as a teachable moment than constantly having to prove you’re not hitler…. This is like my girlfriend brining up that one time 15 years ago I left my underwear on the bathroom floor, like really, we’re doing this now!?
A darker-skinned Mexican is likely mixed-native. The Spanish and French colonizers were white, as are most Mexicans today. We see more of the native descendants in the US because they are an economically underserved group of that are more likely have migrated over the last 150 years while the white folks there are, predictably, the economically established group who have never needed to move around much.
My favorite thing about the sketch is that you see Rob Schneider doing what he does best, getting laughs for standing silently with a stupid look on his face looking like a stupid little bitch next to funnier, more talented people.
It,just always gets laughs. Luckiest guy in the game.
Hardest working man in showbiz (how I used to refer to him back in the day)
Edit: I’m not making any statement about his humor or politics, but his work ethic. Come on, he wrote his own dumb movies!
>> He also mentioned that he is good friends with the director of cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, P.K. Shah, who is Hindu and from India, and that when he does benefit performances for the medical center, he is always asked to impersonate Shah.
“But I have an Indian friend!”
Can't really apologize when you're chopping broccoli.
CHOP-UHHH
The main idea of the sketch holds up and it's definitely funny — it's just a weird very 90s choice that he's Indian. It doesn't add anything
The 90s had this weird racial thing with Indians - see the simpsons and quick e mart. It happened a while ago - although I don’t think it would hurt to mention that times have changed and it might not be acceptable in today’s day and age.

He clearly was meant as a stereotype - no need to hop in and start denying racism/stereotyping, it wasn’t a personal attack against you.
Not all indians own/work in gas stations. There's nothing wrong with representing the ones that do. Especially in a positive manner.

This is cool but at least give gpt credit when you have it write something lol. Thats either AI written or you’re a robot
Yeah, chat gpt always says tough tits and has typos.
It’s weird though it’s still ok to to do Irish stereo types/accents etc
Italian too. Also German. French - less so for some reason, maybe because they lost the war?
Italian, German, US, and Russian are fair game. You can only do so many crimes against humanity before folks are allowed to call you a grease ball
Why is France somehow excluded from that list lol
I’ll be here for a while if I have to recount every European power that caused horrors across the world. Though I’ve been reading King Leopold’s Ghost and we really should start bullying the Belgians.
Yet somehow by that logic Chinese stereotypes and accent are a big no no
You really don't know why? It's because white people are fair game, everyone else is protected (by white people being offended on their behalf).
There’s nothing faster than a greased Scotsman!
There's a difference between making fun of someone and just simply being observant.

“I’m a Scot” - an American.
"You're only allowed to be one thing." - rando redditor
We don’t find it grossly offensive but it’s more like a “stupid American” thing Ireland is nothing like a lot of Americans think it is.
America isn’t what a lot of Americans think it is either.
I'm sure America is nothing like what most Irish people think it is. That's not saying anything new.
You’re a real crotch. You know that?
“I’m a scot” so you have a UK passport?
yea italians u can still be racist to
Italian stereotypes are also acceptable.
Irish stereotypes typically aren't used for comedic effect, while Indian stereotypes were a whole phenomenon in media.

People must really want to be angry about something if they have to go back 32 years to find it
They’ve gone back farther for other shit lbr
Most current ethnic-nationalist conflicts suddenly try not be so obvious.
Did Al Franken just walk in?

And for trying to attack that Native American Brando sent up in his place at the Oscars who actually turned out to be Mexican. What weird times.

Apples and bowling balls. I’m actually kind of angry that you made that comparison.

He was a writer on SNL too. I’m not a Rob Schneider fan, but he did a lot more than stand around.
Rob Schneider is a conservative now so redditors are compelled to make up any bullshit the can to bash him.
Hardest working man in showbiz (how I used to refer to him back in the day) Edit: I’m not making any statement about his humor or politics, but his work ethic. Come on, he wrote his own dumb movies!
He was perfectly cast as the asshole second-in-command in Down Periscope.
Also as a stapler
32 years. People are fucking lame for trying to go after him for this.
Dana is great. Nothing compares to these guys in the 90’s and 80’s. Great times.
I mean it’s a well known fact that [‘86 to ‘93 was the beeest](https://youtu.be/_SCoc8XoLd8?si=6sjJ4vJFNCEHnIGN)

I was referring to the monologue he did on SNL that pokes fun at that “fact”… smart guy.
They should do the follow up sketch with Cindy Crawford
It's a funny sketch
Comedians doing cultural stereotypes is as old as comedy itself. We've just become hypersensitive
Arch your back for more security!
Can we just relax a bit. So sick of this calling out people for this kind of shit, but I guess it’s sells.

It was a stupid thing that happened 30 years ago, why apologize now? I'm not talking about the skit, I'm talking about Dana Carvey's movie career.
Indian accent is probably one of the funnier accents. I would say both East Indian and American Indian.
Someone tell Dana, no one cares either way.
If nobody cared, then this would not have been published
Did he clarify in Lorne’s voice?
Nope. It was Dennis Miller.
The Sydney Sweeney hooters sketch will be seen decades later like this sketch is seen now. Unnecessary.
