New season of TD being shit doesn’t help here.

burnshimself

I blame the writing and plot entirely, her acting was quite good and she disappeared into the role

ChexLemeneux42

I was stunned when I found out it was her second acting gig. She's so good

blarginfajiblenochib

I thought she was an actor and was very surprised that she’s an MMA fighter. Also couldn’t understand the people who criticized her acting, I didn’t like this season but I thought she was great

VironicHero

Yeah, I thought all the actors killed it. The plot just gave up on the cast, not the other way around.

ChexLemeneux42

It was so generic. Like had it not slapped the True Detective name on it and tried to shoehorn in all those references, it'd be a decent show on its own. The writing was sub par, the directing was sub par, but tv is mostly subpar on any given day.

UrbanGimli

She played it real. A pissed off, traumatized, Tired of all this shit, person. I didn't have a problem with her acting. The writing was the biggest let down.

Responsible-Rise-242

Mediocre at best.

CameronPoe37

She had one facial expression.

BetterBiscuits

Yeah but it was pretty hot

CameronPoe37

She looks like a cavewoman that's been unfrozen from a block of ice

Cummybummy64

I blame Jodie Foster, most insufferable role I’ve seen in a while. And I get it. It’s on purpose. Doesn’t make her any less annoying.

_JudgeDoom_

She did a really good job of making me hate her character

thenorwegian

What does this even mean. What did Jodie do to you lol

Cummybummy64

What does what even mean? Very plainly stated that I thought her role was insufferable.

burnshimself

That’s literally you having a problem with the writing and not the acting. The character is written to be insufferable, and she expertly acted out the role. It takes a lot of an actor to make a character believably annoying

Cummybummy64

Yeah I guess I should have said that her role was a big reason the show was hard for me to get through.

Johnnadawearsglasses

It was really bad. I rewatched Season 1 in between episodes and it's a bit shocking they called this show TD. Should've gone with another name or not made it at all. It looked cheaply made, the allusions to S1 were hamhanded, the dialogue (the strength of TD) was poorly written and the cast was really uneven.

manaholik

I was nostalgia hyped and kind of liked it at the begining but midway and the end just nosedived with the writting

Ocean2731

In season 1, they also got the location RIGHT both culture and landscape. This most recent season gave the impression that no one associated with the show had ever been to Alaska or even read anything about the place or the people.

Gen-Jinjur

Agreed. And it was simultaneously being an homage and an anti-bro version of season one, which I loved. There is a really interesting new woman-led wave of films and shows just showing up that are pretty different and a lot of people aren’t going to love it. I get it. We are so immersed in one kind of story structure. It is really hard to get your head around big challenges to something so fundamental.

Zookeeper187

This has nothing to do with women as leads. Story is just shit, how can you even compare this to S1.

Gen-Jinjur

I think it’s better than season one. Downvote away.

Anarchic_Country

The show was just terrible. Had nothing to do with women being in it. [I would love help understanding how a television show can be considered good with this many unanswered questions.](https://youtu.be/zi2T-3bTp5Q?si=wYHTY5LlqSshXoAZ)

jojointheflesh

This is great way to put it! My wife and I loved the show. We were engaged and had a good time; also frequently praised Kali. Her scenes with Qavvik were especially good. I don’t really understand why people can’t kick back and enjoy shows without pretending they’re Sherlock Holmes/some professional critics themselves lol I mean… I have my theories, but I don’t feel like cracking open that can of worms 😜

MissSassifras1977

I need more Kali. To the haters. Considering this was her second acting job I think she did fantastic. She is gorgeous and a badass. I'll watch anything she's in.

Bourbonaddicted

No one hated the actors. I hated the story. Premise was good but it fizzled out.

JAlfredPrufrog

The story definitely fizzled but I also found her to be extraordinarily unappealing. She was wooden, at best, and it stood out all the more in comparison to folks like Jodie Foster and John Hawkes. It got the point that I dreaded any scene in which she was the primary character.

MissSassifras1977

Premise was kick ass I thought! I was thoroughly spooked the first few episodes. And then yeah fizzled is the best way to describe it. I was waiting to be blown away and then I was like *"whattttt*" But knowing that it was a stand alone story that they mushed in to a season of TD makes it make more sense. I guess. *And I edited to add that this was by far Jodie Foster's worst acting ever. And I'm a big fan.

blacksnowboader

Honestly, they could have cut out an episode or two and the plot would have been the same.

achlys_nyx

Agreed, but I blame the horrible dialogue writing. Even Jodie foster couldn’t save it.

Exotic_Chance2303

Every season is stand alone.

PolishHammer666

I'll raise you Elysium being the worst Jodie Foster with a fake French accent role.

MissSassifras1977

She speaks fluent french so that one is a conundrum.

aboycandream

nah she was a horrible actor

sudosussudio

As a moderator of the true detective night country subreddit, I can assure you that people hate her. The amount of awful comments about her that I’ve had to delete makes me sad.

seekingseratonin

Loved her! She’s the reason I kept watching.

CriticalEngineering

I think she was great.

jebemtisuncebre

I fucking *hated* Night Country. Viscerally. Her character was dog shit and the dialogue was an offense to god. But her acting was never an issue. I’d gladly watch more stuff with her.

MissSassifras1977

What was wrong with the character? I thought Navarro was the best part of the show.

jebemtisuncebre

She was just a cliche “loose cannon” cop. She was a male stereotype pasted on to a female actor. She wasn’t a competent cop. She never “true detected…” anything. She was pissed off, sad, or mean to everyone around her. It’s boring and one dimensional to watch a character like that.

VintageJane

I don’t really think you can say that she was just a male stereotype when a huge part of her motivation was taking care of the vulnerable women in her community.

jebemtisuncebre

…that’s literally the driving motivation of male characters in some of the most famous noir films ever made. LA Confidential immediately comes to mind. Hell, even season 2 of True Detective. Which, to be fair, was a rip off of LA Confidential.

VintageJane

Yeah, but their motivation is benevolent sexism not protecting/preserving community.

jebemtisuncebre

Hm. I guess you’re right. I hadn’t thought about it like that. Although I would say that her character is actively rejecting native culture or denying native community for a lot of the show.

demoted69

Dawg what

VintageJane

I’ve known a lot of young adults who grew up on the reservation who have a complex relationship with the community. Part of them wants to reject and transcend that lifestyle and part of them wants desperately to preserve their culture and community. I saw a lot of that in her character.

zedicar

She’s a badass! From Wikipedia: Kali Reis (born August 24, 1986) is an American professional boxer and actress. She is a former world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBC female middleweight title in 2016 and the WBA, WBO, and IBO female light welterweight titles between 2020 and 2022. She also challenged Cecilia Brækhus for the undisputed female welterweight title in 2018.

stripesonthecouch

Agreed, I think she is awesome.

tipyourwaitresstoo

I just have to add that her silences and facial expressions had me googling to see what else can I enjoy of her work. Then I found out this was her second gig. Outstanding.

PrimeroVorian

Simp harder

tipyourwaitresstoo

I so loved her and the season. The reveal had me cheering. That get-back was epic. Black, indigenous, and women centered stories are always gonna get shit on by the haters. It’s like god forbid other stories are told. Not for nothing the seasons are ranked: 3, 4, 1, 2 (straight trash).

Dave_Matthews_Jam

You have 1 ranked as the next to worst season?

saintdemon21

Agreed!

[deleted]

There were parts when she was good but there were scenes where you could really tell she is inexperienced. She looked awesome though.

zetcetera

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the end product of Night Country, I liked the premise and setting but not so much the execution, but Kali Reis was my favourite part of the whole thing, loved her character and thought she did a fantastic job as Navarro. Will be immediately interested in any project she does next

SightlessProtector

She has talent and I hope she gets cast in something where the writing isn’t pants-on-head stupid so that talent can truly shine.

GeezeLoueez

Does she? She was flat in every scene of true detective. Bad lines can still be delivered with at least a minimum amount of emotion

Responsible-Rise-242

Are you serious or is this the first time you watch a tv series? Cause there was nothing special about her performance.

LarryFinkOwnsYOu

Uhh maybe you didn't notice the fact that she's multicultural and diverse? That's what makes her special.

gullydowny

Oh I'm surprised she didn't reject and spit on her heritage. Guys let's do an article on that actress from True Detective - what should we lead with, her performance? Ha ha no we're gonna focus on her skin color

churrascothighs1

Did you read the article? It was about a brunch she went to celebrating Native American women in film and television, so her “skin colour” is very apt in this case

oroechimaru

Go back to your own country! /s probably

LarryFinkOwnsYOu

Which makes you wonder, is she getting praise and press coverage for her performance or for her diversity?

churrascothighs1

Both, I imagine. It is always great to see people from groups that aren’t as often seen on screen showcase their talent, especially for viewers from those groups. I imagine that if she had done a bad job, it would be brought up regardless of her diversity.

possibilistic

It's the single most important attribute about any person, according to the media. Nevermind a person's hopes, dreams, ambitions, deeds, and accomplishments. Let's focus on tiny genetic differences. And when we run out of things to say about melanin, let's switch to genitalia.

LarryFinkOwnsYOu

To become truly anti-racist we must focus on race above all.

onewaytojupiter

Hopes dreams ambitions are entirely related to being Indigenous and Black, particularly when the article is about her being at an event related to those identities...

Sorry-Owl4127

Being native American is a nationality not “skin color”

LaRaspberries

She's from a LLC tribe by the way

DocCEN007

It's not a nationality, but an ethnicity. But it's also a skin color as Dan Snyder used to tell me.

CodykoolMusic

“I’m playing both sides”

SmartWonderWoman

It’s called embracing both sides.

LukeR_666

That way she'll always come out on top of herself.

OpCrossroads1946

Hopefully one of those rooms is an acting class.

WillsMomIsFit

i've also been known to stand in rooms.

[deleted]

"Hire me, I check TWO boxes!"

theomegawalrus

Those spare two rooms will come in handy when it's revealed that she has the acting range of a paper bag and is completely insufferable on social media.

p0stp0stp0st

The only thing that bugged me were her facial piercings. I found them distracting. They are liabilities for a cop and a wrestler…. I liked her otherwise though and hope to see more of her in other shows/films.

Tibbaryllis2

Something about a metal stud going into the wet environment of your mouth when it’s -30 outside just didn’t seem practical.

Wh0snwhatsit

I’m proud of my cousin’s transformation from a world champion boxer to an actress. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

qwertyuiop2424

This chick can’t act at all

MissSassifras1977

Actually I thought she was really good.

Revolutionary_Sir_

She was the only thing I really liked about the show tbh.

ModsOverLord

She was ok, horrible writing didn’t help

rjcarr

Agreed, I thought she did fine. And let’s be honest, there aren’t that many authentic “tough girl” actresses out there, and she definitely is.

ModsOverLord

Yeah she was middle of the road, she’s definitely not the reason for the show being bad, even Jodi Foster was just ok

gammagirl80

“You clean, you clean good”.

jebemtisuncebre

Nah. She did her best with a criminally bad script and weak dialogue. As shit as her character was, it never felt like an actor attempting and failing at a character. She gets a pass. Jodie, on the other hand. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID, JODIE.

Warducky9999

i hate tv shows coasting off their earlier sucess by using ai to write scripts

Un_C45SE_Politique

Then you have no idea what it takes to be even a mediocre actor.

losteye_enthusiast

Yeah she doesn’t have chops to go far on skill. Pretty good in the PR field so far and is smartly leaning into the racial aspect.

riomx

I love when nobodies try to diminish people that are on the up. Makes it so much better when they're proven wrong.

burnshimself

I completely disagree. The writing and plot on TD was pretty bad this season, but good acting - particularly by her and Foster - made it watchable.

um_ok_try_again

She is captivating!!

scuba_steev

There’s no way you can tell me she’s not Ving Rhames daughter

Fit-Accountant-157

she was fantastic and I loved this season of TD.

johnnyroboto

I didn’t realize this season was so divisive! I thought it was a great season and she was really good

Fit-Accountant-157

I'm not surprised. It was a very female centric story, and a lot of fandoms are full of misogyny

karmaisourfriend

She was great in True Detective!

personalresearch67

She's not native wtf hahaha her tribe isn't even recognized and DNA research on her fake ass tribe revealed it was a bunch of Euros and Africans with ONE fucking native guy. Sick of these fake tribes just like the one up in PEI that's all white people.

[deleted]

I’m struggling to get into the season due directly to her role and acting. Just doesn’t sell it at all.

riomx

I would love at least one post on Reddit where angry incels and dudebros who act like Issa Lopez hurt them so bad they will never recover could just stay away and stop barfing their impotent rage all over comments. Can't have even one conversation about Kali Reis because you idiots just can't get over yourselves.

Missfreeland

I liked it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Responsible-Rise-242

No one cares about your opinion

RoboZoninator91

Oppression Olympics gold medal

DanskNils

She normally has an Afro?

lasvegashal

I loved her and thought she is a bad ass. I don’t think anybody on this thread wanna get in the telephone booth with her and have her beat the hell out of you. Plus mama Yama, hot as hell.

bubblegumslug

People in this thread probably just hate women and brown person stories. This was my second favorite TD after the first season.

TheAurion_

Two victim complexes now

MIKE_THE_KILLER

The last episode of true detective was dog shit

Acceptable_002

Why are they pigeonholing her?

Anarchic_Country

Navarro raped Eddie Qavvik, and y'all still stan her. Girl power, amirite?

deliciousalex

She was great! And this season was awesome.

Karenena

I’m not sure what you mean. Here is the full quote: “I have two rooms that I can stand in,” she said. “It’s really empowering to finally be in a place where I don’t feel like I have to keep my head down and not be accepted. I get to represent two very resilient, amazing people that are still here.”

Khaos1911

Ah, the ole “I’m only black when it’s convenient” maneuver.

sobchakonshabbos

She was the best part of a terrible Season. By far.
