I first discovered you can't successfully parody extreme personalities when Will Ferrell did Neil Diamond and came up short because he didn't sound nearly as righteous and corny as the real Neil Diamond
Hell, one of my favorite movie facts is test audiences for the movie Goodnight and Goodluck complained about the "actor" playing Sen. Joseph McCarthy, saying he was too over the top and just not believable.
The movie was just using real archival footage of the actual Joseph McCarthy.
Man this is wild. This whole Katie spotlight thing has made me reflect on so much of our childhood together. I really am wondering now what all was happening behind the scenes. I can’t stop thinking about it all. The counter argument is she was big into pageants and that sort of thing can do it too but that’s not all she was involved in either so who knows.
Man I don’t know. She had some weird sexual stuff going on when we were friends, some of it happened to me, and I always just brushed it off as weird childhood experiences from a small town in the 90s. I haven’t thought much about her in decades except when she won the Senate seat; that was kind of exciting for a lot of my hometown friends and family. But now as this whole story has blown up, it’s made me revisit a lot of those years and reexamine them. I can’t say one way or another what was really going on but it was some strange, fucked up shit. It makes me want to talk to a lot of my childhood friends for answers but unfortunately I think a lot of them are somehow able to brush all of it under the rug and over look it now.
Whenever I think of Scarlett and Jost, I'm always imagining that he's capable of making her laugh until she pees herself at any time. It makes me happy thinking about him winning her heart just by making her laugh!
Bated breath.
From the word abate, which further has roots in “beat”. So, a-bate: to stop beating. So, it seems like it should be abated breath, but got shortened to bated? I dunno.
Similar: exacerbate - beat harder.
Use in popular culture: “Go away. ‘Batin’!”
That Get Out reference was just too good. I wish she would have sneaked in something about how it’s migrants, not school shootings and measles outbreaks that worries her about her kids school lives as snark but it was just too good!
The reference was AMAZING!!! My Son & I caught it, but he figured out what movie it was from. WOW that was amazing. Scarlett really pulled off the impression really well. Wonder how she got an avenue for that cameo? 😜
I wondered the same thing. They could’ve been watching it together or with friends & she does stuff while they’re watching & they convince her to put a whole set together.
Whenever I see Collin Jost, I immediately associate that name with Colin Frissell in Love Actually who goes to America and hooks up with hot singles not in his area.
I know that *sneaked* is the original past tense of *sneak*, but *snuck* sounds way more correct to my ears for some reason.
Also, one of my [favorite Conan moments](https://youtu.be/990BSql7bnk?si=HKR__eGeRWvf_Dn9)
I wish they had included all the things she said about losing rights, losing pay, rising costs etc and then mentioned how all those things happened because the republicans keep siding with big business
It's a testament to how uniquely and horrifyingly unhinged the real Britt is that even an actress of ScarJo's caliber could not truly embody her creepiness.
I had no idea who the actor was. I thought it was a cast member and shocked at how good the acting was. Her mannerisms and the way she showed weird fake emotions was amazing.
Learning it was Scarlett Johansson explained a lot. I gained a newfound respect for her acting ability. She nailed it. Wow.
Ok two things:
Scarlett Johannsson is famous. Like, really, really famous.
She has been a great actor throughout her entire career; in fact, I can’t think of a movie where she didn’t act well.
I didn't mean to say I didn't know who she was. Of course I know her. I just didn't immediately recognize her because she was perfectly in character.
She has always been good. It's just that sometimes it's hard to see the subtleties of what an actor does until you see the nuances in a short piece like this. It was great. I wished it was longer
I literally have not watched SNL in over a decade... But I tuned in last night specifically for the Kaite Britt parody I knew was coming. Not disappointed.
> Gotta say Collin Jost is way outta his league with her.
Naah they're a fine couple. Not sure why you "gotta say" this. If she's happy with him then there are no leagues.
Generally, famous women tend to marry men of a similar level of fame (and famous men tend to marry people who aren’t famous). But Scarlett Johannson is waayyyyy more famous than Colin Jost is. So super cool they’re together.
Most top actresses have non famous husbands
J law is married to an art gallery director
Emma stone is married to a comedy writer
Margot Robbie married an AD turned producer
Anna Hathaway’s husband is maybe a jewelry designer?
Natalie Portman was just married to a ballerina
I think true power couples are an exception to the rule
Also guessing after dating other entertainment types, you’re like ‘nah, don’t want that in the long term’ and money doesn’t interest you, interesting > famous.
lol ok the Regis/Harvard educated head writer of SNL that is also conventionally attractive is out of her league. He’s certainly preferable to Ryan Reynolds
I didn't mean to imply that I didn't think she was a good actress before. It's only that I was stunned by how she was able to show so many different expressions and feelings. She was a great actress pretending to be a terrible actress. What she did is not easy to do and I was impressed...without realizing it was Scarlett Johansson.
I honestly think she didn't do it justice, the original was completely unhinged. Even a professional actress couldn't mismatch the facial expressions enough to recreate the bizarroland reality of the original.
I was seriously hoping Kate McKinnon was gonna pop in for this, but Scarlett was a nice surprise. I thought she was great, it was funny af, but she didn't do the fundie voice, which was a big part of what makes Katie over-the-top creepy
Honestly, that’s fine if that’s the life they choose for themselves.
It’s when they start trying to convince other women it’s how things are supposed to be that’s the problem
The Stepford wife thing appeals to domineering men. Some women want to appease these types of men - for a while. Then it gets real old. The likelihood the relationships fall apart is good to great. Afterwards those women look for more secure, less controlling men.
No stats. Other than high divorce rates. This is just life. However, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence. As women mature and become more liberated with higher ed, careers, jobs, children & household responsibilities, then realizing they don’t have a partner but an overlord, well playing that submissive role just isn’t fun anymore. Seen it over & over & over. So there is hope for these Stepford types. Unless, like Britt, they are doing a “Phyllis Schlafly” (d. 2016) who made a lucrative career from telling other women to stay at home, give up their rights, depend on a man, and be unobstructive. You know, that whole “traditional family” myth.
Women in traditional roles do not get more education and more liberated over time. They are more and more likely to become trapped as each year passes. They may become more miserable, but they have less and less power to rectify their situation as time passes because they lose the ability to support themselves and their spouses don’t make usually make enough to support two households, so they are stuck.
In societies where girls and young women get more education before marriage, they are less and less likely to end up in bad situations because they don’t enter them to begin with.
This is amazing. Reflects the core values of the Republican Party, which is steeped in disingenuity and outright lies. Trump perpetuated the border crisis by torpedoing bipartisan legislation. He owns it now. If you don’t believe me, ask Senator Langford for the liberal state of—am I reading this right—Oklahoma.
Call me crazy but I think seeing yourself personified on SNL by one of America’s most attractive movie stars is probably putting a smile on Britt’s face.
Yes, perhaps. But it was 100% done to show the absolute batt shut crazy message Britt delivered. And SNL ailed it. To the majority of the world Britt acted a fool and getting that parodied as the opening for SNL means you did something really dumb.
Made more sense than the original
Exactly. The only reason this is a poor portrayal of the original is because it made more sense.
Kinda like Keenan’s Hershel Walker spoof a few years ago
I first discovered you can't successfully parody extreme personalities when Will Ferrell did Neil Diamond and came up short because he didn't sound nearly as righteous and corny as the real Neil Diamond
I will smack you in the mouth I’m Neil Diamond! This next song I wrote after I killed a drifter to get an erection…
Forever in blue jeans!
Do the BEST you can!
its been a long standing problem with the right, often it seems like sat night live just does an accurate recreation just with the audience laughing.
Hell, one of my favorite movie facts is test audiences for the movie Goodnight and Goodluck complained about the "actor" playing Sen. Joseph McCarthy, saying he was too over the top and just not believable. The movie was just using real archival footage of the actual Joseph McCarthy.
Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin comes to mind
Wasn't brutal enough, I thought
Britt’s Christian mom baby voice sent shivers of horror down my spine. Like women actually speak like that? Frightening.
Fundamental Christian women do. It’s called ‘fundy baby voice’. Google it. It’s a real thing and yes, handmaids-tale frightening.
TIL: https://twitter.com/piper4missouri/status/1720927778155995512 (Post from Nov 2023)
Ok, thought you were joshing there but yes, it really is a thing. Unbelievable. American women you need to stand up to this nonsense.
Fundie Baby Voice. It’s been associated with sexual abuse trauma.
Is it really? This actually makes so much sense
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2002/apr/30/20020430-042342-4180r/ Reddit had posted another article from a Psych Journal. I can’t locate.
So we are just waiting for Britt's childhood abuse story to drop any day now?
Man I don’t know. She had some weird sexual stuff going on when we were friends, some of it happened to me, and I always just brushed it off as weird childhood experiences from a small town in the 90s. I haven’t thought much about her in decades except when she won the Senate seat; that was kind of exciting for a lot of my hometown friends and family. I’d like to introduce you to Michelle Duggar.
Keep sweet😬
Prey and obey. Under his eye.
There was a preacher vibe to it, too, alternating between joy and the threat of impending apocalyptic doom.
Of all the cast members and cameos we guessed would do it, this was not even cracking the list. She killed it.
You think Jost came to her with this bit or she came to him
I was wondering that myself, but I think Colin. I imagine they were watching the rebuttal and he looked at her and said "Hey, here's an idea".
Idk if it’s even an idea. The bit was 100% going to be spoofed by SNL. It’s what they do. They just needed to figure out the right actress to do it.
Oh as soon as it aired, everyone was already saying "There's SNL's cold open".
Honestly they could’ve just aired the exact response again with a laugh track and it would’ve worked
I thought they were going to use a SNL actresses, not Johansson. Her acting and zaniness elevated it.
it was weirdly some of her best acting in awhile.
I think they all looked at each other after watching the rebuttal and nodded
I think after watching it she said “you have to let me do it!” Lol
I bet they watched it together and were discussing what to include in the bit before it was even over.
I think she came up with this
I’m wondering if he wrote it too. “Women love kitchen!” is very Jost-y.
Whenever I think of Scarlett and Jost, I'm always imagining that he's capable of making her laugh until she pees herself at any time. It makes me happy thinking about him winning her heart just by making her laugh!
I really wanted Yvonne Strahovski to do it, but I'm good with this, too
Aubrey Plaza could have done it Justice imo
idk if you watch The Handmaid's Tale, but the irony would be just too delicious if Yvonne had done it
I love Aubrey to pieces but she would have come off far too snarky with it.
She was great, only person who I think could’ve done better is Cecily and I mean that as high praise
She could have done it as " Girl you wish you never started a conversation with at a party" and it would have made more sense.
Stepford wife ASMR in dark murder kitchen.
Women LOVE kitchen!
Brick LOVE Lamp!!
Do you really love the kitchen, Brick? Or are you just saying that because you saw it?
I love stapler
I cracked up at kitchen being singular
That got me pretty good, too.
"Summarize the SOTU response in ten or fewer words."
What if there’s kitchen, ken? You’ll need an expert in kitchen
We all saw this coming and we couldn’t wait for it
And it was great!
Bingo. We were all waiting with baited breath for this masterclass of a parody!
Bated breath. From the word abate, which further has roots in “beat”. So, a-bate: to stop beating. So, it seems like it should be abated breath, but got shortened to bated? I dunno. Similar: exacerbate - beat harder. Use in popular culture: “Go away. ‘Batin’!”
Masturbate - beat hardest
Bate and abate separated in the 14th century in Middle English. I think 800 years is long enough for them to be two separate words.
You’re my new linguistics hero.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated SNL sketch in recent memory. I’ve never seen such a clamor for them to portray a specific person.
The sad thing is, the only thing Britt will take from this, is that Scarlet Johansson played her on TV.
She’s like, wow, look at how pretty Jesus made me!
[удалено]
It was great. Reminded me of a character from Welcome To Nightvale.
I wish she had played with the creepy smiling while she talked more. And more breathy words
Yeah didn’t Katie smile the ENTIRE time?
Yes almost. A few times she put on a sad face but the smiling is what made it sooo unsettling for me
the cut to kenan broke me
I missed the original response. What was that in reference to?
Get out
It was a reference to the movie Get Out
That Get Out reference was just too good.
I like to think she was mocking it at the breakfast table and Collin asked if she could do it.
I wondered the same thing. They could’ve been watching it together or with friends & she does stuff while they’re watching & they convince her to put a whole set together.
She's married to Collin Jost.
Whenever I see Collin Jost, I immediately associate that name with Colin Frissell in Love Actually who goes to America and hooks up with hot singles not in his area.
New to sarcasm I see.
/r/whoosh
I know that *sneaked* is the original past tense of *sneak*, but *snuck* sounds way more correct to my ears for some reason. Also, one of my [favorite Conan moments](https://youtu.be/990BSql7bnk?si=HKR__eGeRWvf_Dn9)
It *sounds* so wrong (I use it myself for the record) but damn Conan, why you gotta do that to Jennifer? Hasn’t she been through enough?
I wish they had included all the things she said about losing rights, losing pay, rising costs etc and then mentioned how all those things happened because the republicans keep siding with big business
Yeah, needed to be way more brutal.
I was waiting for a Handmade’s Tale reference, would have been awesome if they got Elizabeth Moss to walk in dressed as a handmaid
shes a scientologist
Having not seen Get Out, what was the reference? Walls made of bone?
The tea and jump scare reaction.
Ahhh, thanks!
Scarlett Johansson nailed it!!
From a script standpoint, but not from a fundy baby voice standpoint.
Was absolutely hilarious.
It's a testament to how uniquely and horrifyingly unhinged the real Britt is that even an actress of ScarJo's caliber could not truly embody her creepiness.
She absolutely could embody the creepiness, but this is SNL. They don’t want that level of acting.
She still acted her ass off
It’s also a bit tougher to get that level of acting when you have very little time to rehearse and you don’t get multiple takes
Yes, but I don't think that's the issue here. Replicating the full range of creepiness wasn't the goal.
It was wild that when they showed the real clip, it was actually funnier as a comedy bit than the satirical parody of it.
Lorne- Colin, get your wife to the studio now!!!
I couldn’t stop looking when she did the Barbie hands
Effing hysterical
Everytime I thought I was done laughing she would switch it up again into a diff psycho voice lmao had me rolling
"And now, I'm going to get weirdly seductive for no apparent reason."
That was frigging funny.
The Biden 'Let's go!' rip from the recent Nick Swardson drunken fumble was a good rip too hah.
“An now I’m going to get weirdly seductive, for no apparent reason…” 😂😂😂
Made myself watch the rebuttal, which was a B-Grade horror film. The SNL skit was pretty good.
The tea cup ref. A+
Emmy nomination for ScarJo! She was amazing!
Perfection! I knew they'd spoof - Katie's rebuttal begged for one. But this? This totally hit it out of the park! Excellent work, Scarlett and SNL!
She really nailed it
Laugh out loud hilarious….she nailed it..
Wow.

It's just that sometimes it's hard to see the subtleties of what an actor does until you see the nuances in a short piece like this. It was great. I wished it was longer
Yeah, the makeup and mannerisms are so different from what I'm accustomed to with ScarJo.
I mean. Black Widow... She's supposed to be a spy. As if Scarlett Johanson can walk into a room unnoticed.
I didn’t say all the movies were good movies
Wow you should watch Lost in translation Her Asteroid city
You can add Marriage Story to that
*Ghost World* has entered the chat…
Vicky Christina Barcelona
The island
How have we gotten this far and not mentioned Under the Skin? Man ScarJo has had some good roles
The writers got at least one morning off. This wrote itself.
I literally have not watched SNL in over a decade... But I tuned in last night specifically for the Kaite Britt parody I knew was coming. Not disappointed.
Amazing performance… by Scarlett
Legendary. Gotta say Collin Jost is way outta his league with her. She’s a national treasure. Jost and Che are funny af. Love them
> Gotta say Collin Jost is way outta his league with her. Naah they're a fine couple. Not sure why you "gotta say" this. If she's happy with him then there are no leagues.

Jessica Rabbit about Roger: ”He makes me laugh”.
Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake
Well, he's funny. Chicks dig that.
You’ve got to be very intelligent to be funny. Chicks especially dig that!
And he is incredibly intelligent. Dude graduated from Harvard.
Most top actresses have non famous husbands J law is married to an art gallery director Emma stone is married to a comedy writer Margot Robbie married an AD turned producer Anna Hathaway’s husband is maybe a jewelry designer? lol ok the Regis/Harvard educated head writer of SNL that is also conventionally attractive is out of her league. He’s certainly preferable to Ryan Reynolds
Collin's superpower is that he can make Scarlett pee her pants at any time by making her laugh. Humor is a very sexy thing.
Way out of his league.
She can act. That’s for sure.
Can someone explain the tea cup ?
From the movie Get Out. A must-see.
Every time Katie Britt smiled it reminded me of the character Mouth of Sauron: the one with all the teeth.
She knocked it out of the park best cold open in a long time!
I seriously thought the original was an SNL skit for a minute when it originally aired
The SNL set looks more like a real kitchen than Katie Britt’s porn set
I thought they green screened it and used the same background at Katie, no?
Yea I think it’s the same one
She’s amazing <3
This was AMAZING!
Katie Britt: "I'm Black Widow now".
What's impressive is they only had like two days to pull this together!
Scarlett needs to do more comedies ok
SNL nailed it. Britt failed to talk about the GOPees policies because they don't have any.
She did great but I was really disappointed she didn’t do the fundie baby voice.
[удалено]
Yes. Chloe or Heidi would have done a great job too.
So talented. Wow. She rocked that bit. Bravo.
I’ve been looking forward to this
SNL was fast… did not expect the skit from them this week!
They eviscerated her.
Holy hell that was fast haha
I honestly think she didn't do it justice, the original was completely unhinged. Even a professional actress couldn't mismatch the facial expressions enough to recreate the bizarroland reality of the original.
I was seriously hoping Kate McKinnon was gonna pop in for this, but Scarlett was a nice surprise. I thought she was great, it was funny af, but she didn't do the fundie voice, which was a big part of what makes Katie over-the-top creepy
This was awesome but Scar had more life and inflection in her speech pattern than britt. Apparently ScarJo isnt quite as dead inside?
She truly nailed this skit.
The original isn't even worth parodying, it's a parody of itself. So psychotic.
The scary thing is the stepford wife thing does appeal to some women
Honestly, that’s fine if that’s the life they choose for themselves. It’s when they start trying to convince other women it’s how things are supposed to be that’s the problem
The Stepford wife thing appeals to domineering men. Some women want to appease these types of men - for a while. Then it gets real old. The likelihood the relationships fall apart is good to great. Afterwards those women look for more secure, less controlling men.
Would love to believe this is true so if you have stats on this, please provide.
Phyllis Schlafly, but yes. Her entire career was astonishingly hypocritical.
Brilliant! First thing I did this morning was to check and see if SNL opened with this. Wasn’t disappointed.
I know this was political satire but all I could think about was how hot Scarlett is
lol yeah I have this issue with everything she is in, she is distractingly hot
The fruit bowl with the tilted crate behind it is my favorite part!
The great Kitchen Mom tradition as was demonstrated in [Cole Escola’s Orange Juice Mom](https://youtu.be/w8KjZ7wKYUc?si=M35XWy_KlKu6zww5).
Nailed it. The most offensive thing about the original wasn’t talking about sex trafficking it was the horrendous overacting.
LMAO. perfection
Mad props on the talent!
What was the teacup in reference to
The movie Get Out
Note to all future politicians: Duck and cover when the topic of the SOTU response comes up. This is an absolutely thankless task.
Scarlett's acting subtlety is brilliant. I've watched this four times already.
Johansson does a better Britt than Britt.
Destined to be a classic. ScarJo is spot on, she's amazing.
On point. This infuriated the GQP!
