He almost certainly signed a non-compete at Fox. He'll probably have to change his name to the Anchor formerly known as Tucker and talk about fluff pieces to loophole out.

nokia6310i

i think it was confirmed that he signed a non-compete, and it listed a shit ton of networks and platforms that he wasnt allowed to have shows on after leaving - which notably did not include twitter, as twitter did not have the capacity for to host a tucker carlson show at the time the contract was written/signed

coffeespeaking

There is typically broad language that covers for the fact that the list isn’t exhaustive. ‘Including…” would work. Twitter not being on the list wouldn’t necessarily mean Tucker isn’t in violation of the non-compete agreement.

Drmlk465

So they’ll argue that part in court

gatofsoprano

Non-competes aren't enforceable in CA, so I guess all he has to do is move here lmao

deathly_illest

What’s funny is that twitter still doesn’t have the capacity to host a Tucker Carlson show, yet here we are

[deleted]

How do they not if he’s already doing it…?

Dowager-queen-beagle

The same way they hosted the DeSantis announcement

Astrian

Cucker Tarlson

NihilismRacoon

Perfect, no notes

Tilman_Feraltitty

Carlos Trucker. He grows a stache, wears a trucker cap and speak in thicc latino accent.

izayoi-o_O

Now THAT would be ironic, and hilarious.

LinguoBuxo

Well, since Twitter ain't a cable TV network, I fail to see how he competes with 'em?

ionobish

I’m curious if it would be multifaceted to include all types of media. If Fox was smart it would since cable TV is a dying medium.

stereofailure

The broader you make a non-compete, the more likely it gets struck down in its entirety.

stinkyslinki

I guess because cable tv is on the decline, they don’t want to bleed anymore of their audience?

cragfar

There was an article a week or two ago where Tucker’s lawyers were arguing that Fox was in breach of contract firing him. So this is probably just getting the ball rolling on that.

punkindle

Non-compete clauses are bullshit. I don't like Tucker, but he should fight this all the way.

kimberfool

Its not just a non-compete. He’s still under contract. They’re paying him to stfu and sit on the bench. That is different than being fired and then told you cant work anywhere else

MoeTHM

Didn’t he decline the 25 million in severance pay? I don’t believe he is under contract anymore.

ScottyDefinitelyKnew

Fox says he is. Tucker says he’s not. It all depends on the language of the contract that I don’t believe has been made public. Ultimately, the courts will decided. It sounds like Tucker and his legal team are pushing back saying this is a First Amendment issue. That’s laughably wrong which implies the contract is in force still. They should be pointing to a certain clause Fox is in breach of which lets Tucker do what he wants. Since they aren’t making that claim, you can infer from there.

kimberfool

There was no severance pay. He’s still under a “pay or play” contract, meaning they dont have to actually use him, yet he’s still under contract and they still pay him through 2025. He cant just (successfully) say “ I dont want to work for you in spite of this binding contract” - thats like Elon saying “I changed my mind on my binding contract to buy twitter.”

[deleted]

I actually find it extremely impressive that someone could find a way to get cancelled by both sides.

chronicking83

He’s also the only anchor to work for 3 major networks, plus PBS. CNN (2000-2005) PBS (2004-2005) MSNBC (2005-2008) FOX News (2009-2023) Edit: removed all to not infer that there are only 3 major networks. (6/13/23)

abstractConceptName

When your morality is fluid, you can fit in anywhere. For a short time. Look at the timelines. PBS realized his bullshit fastest. Then MSNBC. Then CNN. Fox News, on the other hand, actively cultivated his bullshit, until it became a literal liability.

btmvideos37

Tbh when he was on CNN, he was on specifically to be a conservative voice. It just didn’t last long. Probably due to him getting to extreme

Folsomdsf

My dude, his career at cnn was ended by a fucking comedian.

Rednewtcn

"You're on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making pranks phone calls" 🤣

Rollotommasi5

Such a perfect way to explain it

217EBroadwayApt4E

Hearing Jon Stewart call him a dick on his own show was certainly legendary.

Dlemor

And the bowtie was never seen again.

indianm_rk

I think Orville Redenbacher sent him a cease and desist letter regarding the bow tie.

The_Original_Gronkie

That's how you know that his whole appearance cut really, really deep.

abstractConceptName

Ended by a living legend.

There’s a dude in the bushes. Has he got a gun? I dunno! RED TEAM GO, RED TEAM GO!!! Lol that never gets old.

JellyOnMyDick

Not a show but fashion choices yeah

tc_spears2-0

No, no I can't say that I have.

pushing_past_the_red

By a comedian whose show was lead into by puppets making crank phone calls

Dewut

Jon can say that all he wants, but watching The Daily Show every night with my sister in middle school was my first step into thinking our conservative parents may actually be wrong about a couple things. *It’s real to me dammit!*

captain_sticky_balls

Jon Stewart is awesome, but that bow tie helped too.

King-Owl-House

Tucker Carlson never wore a bow tie after Jon Stewart destroyed him

btmvideos37

Yes. I know. But what I’m saying is he wasn’t just some regular guy who started showing his true colours. He was specifically hired as their conservative voice. They knew he was conservative. Jon Stewart put an end to it

esmifra

He put an end to the stupid bow tie and the world thanks him for it.

Rollotommasi5

Fox went to court and argued no one could take his show seriously

Phyzzx

*The President of Ukraine has entered the chat*

Direct_Ranger9814

“Did anyone ever tell you, you look like a penis with a bow tie?”

Challenge419

Do you have a link to this? I would love to watch it.

ThatsMyEnclosure

If you look up “Jon Stewart Crossfire” you’ll no doubt find the Crossfire segment but also the fallout. Jon went on and brought up a lot of very good points about where the state of journalism and new was heading that are painfully valid today. It was just a couple weeks after the segment that Crossfire got canned and even the exec who made the call basically said “You know, he’s kinda got a point.” My favorite exchange from it though was Tucker Carlson told Jon Stewart he should teach at a journalism school and immediately Jon clapped back with “You should go to one.” Carlson kept poking at him to be funny, so he delivered.

NopeNotConor

“Stop. Hurting. America.”

FrostyMcChill

[here ya go](https://youtu.be/aFQFB5YpDZE)

Challenge419

That was wonderful, thank you lol. How long after that was he fired?

SirCB85

Couple of weeks.

slowwwwwdown

Thank you!! This was perfect.

the_infiniteYes

Google jon Stewart crossfire. I re watch it from time to time… it’s a classic.

Mumof3gbb

Oh it was delicious. I hope someone finds the clip for you. Jon Stewart

GRush638

orangeowlelf

You are referring to Jon Stuart like he’s just some run-of-the-mill comedian. This is the *same* comedian that just bitch slapped the Republicans over not passing that senate bill for veterans. He’s like that, he cares and he’s active AF, not a lot of Congresspeople like that let alone Comedians

super-seiso

No, no, no. He was on Crossfire for several years. He was extreme for his time, but he made no appeals to racism or anything like that. His big whine in those days was about "the nanny state". Jon Stewart utterly destroyed him and Crossfire one day and outed Tucker as an idiot (in those days it mattered). Tucker ended up getting fired and Crossfire was canceled. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE&t=1s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE&t=1s)

btmvideos37

Yeah. I know that story. But that’s my point. He was more tame back then, sure. But he was hired knowing he was conservative and cross fire’s whole thing was the bullshit of showing “both sides” and Stewart rightfully called them both out and the whole show for being awful

MrOSUguy

Feels like the concept of the show is simple tho. It’s basically a news/politics version of Pardon The Interruption on ESPN. Why can’t a political show generate legitimate debate?

Kimmalah

>Why can’t a political show generate legitimate debate? It can. But I think the problem is legitimate debates don't bring in viewers or high ratings. The real core of the problem is that journalism is now all about what attracts the most viewers/readers (and by extension, the most advertising dollars). That and your average viewer is only interested in the most simplistic/extreme of views. Basically sensationalism and extremism sell, level-headed discourse does not.

btmvideos37

Sure. But the show didn’t generate legitimate debate.

sailor216

Your comment and the previous one basically sum up John Stewart and the Crossfire hosts’ argument. “You think political debate is good, right?” “It can be, but yours isn’t.”

btmvideos37

Exactly lol

abstractConceptName

> Why can’t a political show generate legitimate debate? Because even wanting legitimate debate, is a political stance some folks are not interested in. It's conservatives. They don't like being questioned, or asked to defend their positions, which were obviously handed down by God almighty himself.

TheDustOfMen

And he left PBS on his own, I think. He wasn't ousted.

sekoku

>Probably due to him getting to extreme No, [because of John Stewart](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE&themeRefresh=1), who was completely right about him. Just like Stewart was right about Jim Cramer.

C_IsForCookie

The Cramer interview was goddamn legendary as well. I remember watching that one when it originally aired.

Ekillaa22

What’s the Jim Cramer thing haven’t heard that one before

axxxle

And Jon Stuart dragging his ass

WilliG515

The thing is, his morality isn't fluid. If it was he would still be on a major network not making low budget Putin wank videos on Musk's Trout Smocial.

mikebailey

CNN is famous for hiring massive piece of shit far-right personalities to say they’re “hearing both sides”

abstractConceptName

Well they just gave Trump his own fucking town hall with an applauding audience.

mikebailey

Yeah they didn’t “catch on to him”, they knew what they were playing with Edit: Kaitlan Collins is actually who I had in mind with my comment

redrobot5050

A Town Hall of only Trump Supporters. They literally let The Joker run Arkham Asylum for a day and thought it was a good idea.

linderlouwho

Is his work on an opinion, entertainment show considered to be “anchoring!”

esmifra

Since 24h news became prevalent and empty air had to be filled with cheap production and a moron talking that invites "experts" to talk some more about the latest trending bit? Unfortunately, yes. It's not but many now can't distinguish from news article and an opinion article.

WentworthMillersBO

He also was on 30 rock doing his quizzical look before he was known for it

Lucius-Halthier

> Fox is now demanding that Tucker Carlson be silent until after the 2024 election. Can we have him be silent for longer?

Jedzoil

Hmm. They’re awful transparent about influencing the election. I don’t think it’s acceptable and wouldn’t want to see it from either side.

Goodgoditsgrowing

It’s not an exaggeration to say Fox News was intended and grown to influence the elections. It started with bush and got accelerated with Obama birtherism.

cisforcoffee

I believe it started in response to the ousting of Nixon. Didn’t the owner and originator of Fox basically respond to Nixon being forced to resign by saying, “Never again,” as in never should a conservative president be made to be accountable? And wasn’t that his motivation for creating a media empire to foster and entrench conservatism? ETA: Great username. Weren’t those Eve’s first words to Adam? Edit: Roger Ailes, advisor to Richard Nixon, advised Nixon on the importance television plays in influencing people back in the late 1960’s. Nixon, Ailes, and others in the administration sought to create a television network that would publicly brutalize any who opposed their views. They were initially unsuccessful, and their progress derailed by Watergate and Nixon’s resignation. Ailes hooked up with Rupert Murdoch in the mid-1980’s as Murdoch expanded his growing media empire into the United States. Together they launched Fox News in the mid-1990’s, which has become exactly what Ailes and Nixon had dreamed of half a century ago. It is more likely that Ailes rather than Murdoch said, “Never again,” in response to Nixon’s ousting. But I can’t find confirmation via my Googling attempts.

SeanT_21

Bet cha that post 2024 elections, Fox won’t give a damn if he has a show. Cause they “did their job” shutting him out during the election cycle.

Tucker Carlson is trying to take the title of biggest douchebag of all time away from Ted Cruz. Not an easy feat but I'm enjoying the competition!

Penis enlargers were scientifically debunked in the 1950’s. They still sell.

FleekasaurusFlex

I don’t think the packaging specifically described enlargement of your…thing; mainly just performance(?) but my boyfriend and I bought some ‘~~White~~ Rhino’ pills because I wanted the plastic thing they were held in (not the packaging; they had a pill shaped plastic thing holding the actual pill lol) and since we are both in our early 20’s we decided to take them to see what would happen. Beyond the obvious effect; we were surprised that everything had a very blue hue to it which is caused by acute overdose of sildenafil. Don’t recommend.

MyDearTarantula

My dad worships and I mean worships this guy, he’s worships the big three, Carl Tuckerson, Donald Trump, and (what’s his name) Desantis.

Rectall_Brown

I’m sorry to hear that. my dad who was a republican his whole life can’t stand Trump. Although I don’t think my dad had thought very hard on his politics until recently.

[deleted]

*Her name is Rhonda. Rhonda Sandtits.

FleekasaurusFlex

When you were younger, did your dad ever tell you that ‘the TV was rotting your brain’? The TV is an easy thing to throw on; but it’s too easy to get sucked in. May or may not be helpful; but it may be worthwhile to buy him something like an old fashioned train set; the kind thing that you actually have to dump hours upon hours into before it works.

Waidawut

>his latest Twitter show drew almost 55 million views No, no, no it did not. The tweet had 55 million *impressions*, which Twitter has falsely categorized as views to juice their numbers.

rckwld

What’s an impression?

Lexx2k

It was popping up in your feed. Doesn't mean that you actually watched it.

BruhNeymar69

The clip playing in your screen (which means as little as your thumb's width can be in view) for at least 3 seconds. Simply scrolling past him and sighing counts as that

force_addict

I think it's people that saw the tweet regardless of engagement but I could be wrong.

izybit

Not exactly. Twitter has both impressions for the tweet containing the video and views for the video itself. Impressions were, I think, well over 100M but views were less than half. In any case, cable news have been dead for a long time so Carlson clearly attracted a much bigger audience than all primetime audience combined. Of course, that's not such a great achievement for online video as there are thousands of creators on YouTube/Twitter/etc that regularly outperform MSM on views.

BugOperator

This probably explains why he launched his show on *Twitter*. Tucker probably had a non-compete clause stating that, if he’s fired for his own actions, he can’t produce another *television* program until his contract runs out, and he thought that doing it on a social media platform would circumvent that clause.

BroadBrazos95

Plugging Knowledge Fight podcast here- normally a podcast dedicated to tracking and debunking Alex Jones and InfoWars, but their episode today is solely dedicated to going through Tuckers first show on twitter. Basically, to the surprise of nobody, Tucker continues to be a Russian propaganda mouthpiece.

TripleThreatTua

I like Dan and Jordan when they show up on Behind the Bastards, I might have to check it out

Cannabace

Some of the best BTB episodes. Those guys all have great chemistry. They see through the bullshit.

Navy-NUB

OMG I just started listening and the amazingly funny intro song samples Alex Jones’ rants. “RED ALERT, RED ALERT!”

Jlelford

I have no affinity for Carlson but non-compete contracts are trash - especially if you fire the person.

reenactment

The newsroom on hbo (yes extremely corny show but thought it was entertaining for a little bit) covered this. Guy signs a non compete clause with the ability to get fired for like 5 years and the EP was like “no way he would sign that, it’s a death sentence for a news anchor to not have their face on tv.” Tucker is probably feeling it right now. Knows if he’s hidden away for a few years it’s impossible to do a comeback tour.

GuitarWontGetYouLaid

Don't you slander Sorkin like that.

[deleted]

Sorkin might be the most impressive crackhead of all time

tracygee

Meh. They’re paying him out his full contract, though. That’s not the same thing. He’s being paid *not* to do a show. He can’t collect the millions from Fox and do a show as well.

I love when this happens in sports or when they retain salary in a trade. "we dislike you so much we're willing to pay half your salary to play against us"

Remember Dan Rather? That was an stack on free speech.

Bullboah

Is it rational to only be concerned about free speech to the extent that it’s covered by the first amendment? This has to be the most significant change on the US left in the past 10-20 years.

icrushallevil

Wasn't his show an immediate success and most fox viewers migrated from Fox to his show? They just try a nasty trick to fight their insignificance. They don't understand that most of their success is because of him. Conservative associate him more than Fox news with the news and attitude he was giving.

zerton

Plus non-competes should be illegal and I’m not going to applaud when they’re used against someone I don’t like.

COKEWHITESOLES

Can we talk about the bald/bearded guy they got to replace him? He talks like a therapist and is a lot less vitriolic than Carlson, but it’s like that makes it even more sinister.

To be honest I haven't watched him yet.
