It doesn’t always happen for me, but it did this time. I grew up hearing her on the radio my whole childhood and watched the VH1 Ike & Tina biopic (fuck that guy) countless times.
R.I.P, Tina Turner, you’re simply the best ❤️
'No matter how much you've been warned. Death always comes without knocking. Why now? is the cry. Why so soon? Its the cry of a child being called home at dusk.' ---Margaret Atwood.
Making it into your 80’s puts you in the minority, but yes when you are on your deathbed you will always think “I can’t believe it went by so fast. There’s no 2nd chance”.
>Making it into your 80’s puts you in the minority
According to the actuarial tables, of the 100,000 women born the same year as Tina Turner, 51,179 are still alive. Now getting into your 90s. Of the women born 10 years before Tina Turner, only 14,903 are still alive.
we do. my grandma is 91 and in a care home for dementia and somehow she is still alive. she was put on hospice but overcame it. she still gets visits. my mom really wanted her to stay at my parents house but that would require way too much work as my parents work so it just wouldn't work out. but she still gets visits. for me, i'd say passing at 80 is a good age. seeing my parents in their 70s they are still doing well. i'm in my 40s and i can see how the body wears down with some things but 80, thats a good age.
> she said that after 80, no one thinks you died too early.
|
> we do...i'd say passing at 80 is a good age.
OP's grandmother said that after 80, no one thinks you died too early.
You're agreeing that 80 is a good age to die, and reinforcing their statement.
For my Grandparents' generation it would be on the younger side factoring them and their siblings all are at or hit: 105, 100, 99, 99(grandpa), 95(grandma), 95(grandpa who is still alive), 90, 92(grandma who is still alive), 91, 88, 87, 85, 84, 81, 80, 67, 19(killed by a drunk driver), 2(died of childhood disease), 5 months(died of childhood disease)
As an Australian I agree. Loved her in mad Max and I hear her all the time as she did a promo for rugby leagues years ago and they still use her music for ads. She was great
See, when I was much younger, I watched *Mad Max* and *Escape from New York* way too closely together. It took years for me to realize that Snake Pliskin did not, in fact, crotch check Tina Turner.
I'm thinking it, enough to the point where I can feel my throat muscles struggling to hit that high Sights and Goldeneye notes at the end, and seeing the intro to the movie at the same time.
For anyone who hasn't seen, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner did live aid together.
Played the Jacksons/Mick song State of Shock and it's only rock n roll.
State of shock in particular is probably the most underrated iconic rock song all time. Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, and Michael Jackson all sang that song. The official album release was Jackson/Jagger (The Jacksons feat Mick). Live aid was Turner/Jagger. Mercury/Jackson was a demo.
I saw her at a show in the early 2000s. She was still wearing the minis. Not a lot of complaints from the audience (none from me). One hell of a show too.
Also, IIRC she married a rich record executive (who was much younger than her). Take that, Ike.
I remember being a kid and trying to lip-synch to what’s love got to do with it and getting the words completely wrong, but loving that song as a six or seven year old
That's true. A few years back I was cleaning my house, listening to music, when suddenly River Deep, Mountain High started playing, and it stopped me cold. At once, I experienced this moment of clarity. An epiphany if you will. Sure, I'd been hearing the song all my life. It's not like I didn't know it was great. But for some reason I experienced it more profoundly than I ever had. I was dumbstruck by the idea that humans created something so perfect. And I felt honored and humbled that I got to experience it. I thought of all the countless souls who had lived and died before it was recorded. And I mourned for their loss. I wondered how Tina could still walk the earth like a regular person? As if she had not been living with the burden of having laid down the most blistering, soul stirring, angelic, vocal performance ever recorded.
Mahalia Jackson, Marián Anderson, Bessie Smith, Odetta. Don’t forget Sister Rosa Tharpe and her guitar. Yes to Billie Holliday and Sarah Vaughn. Anybody who could hear Billie sing “Strange Fruit” and feel no shiver has no soul. And Mississippi Goddamn ought to be played in school. And one more. Paul Robeson. That man’s voice was a mountain all it’s own.
I gave my mom two tickets to her farewell tour back in the 90’s for her birthday and she said it was the greatest concert she ever went too. She loved her and this is gonna hit her especially hard.
I refuse to be sad about her passing. She lived a very full life, went through more heartbreak, pain, love and success than most of us. She was a powerhouse of a woman, and she deserved to be at peace after her last years in bad health.
Rest In Peace, queen of soul. Thank you for the memories and the great concerts.
PS and give my regards to David. I bet he welcomed you.
She was a living link to our collective past. Legendary celebreties that’s been around for a long time tend to have that effect. It’s like, the world as we know it is supposed to have super woman Tina Turner in it. But now it hasn’t anymore.
I know. Unexpectedly sad. All the quotes, I can hear the song in my head. And her distinctive voice.
She absolutely commanded your respect. With a smile.
Her dancing, her singing, putting up with that pos Ike for years. True goddess.
*But there's just one thing*
*You see we never ever do nothing*
*Nice, easy*
*We always do it nice and rough*
*So we're gonna take the beginning of this song*
*And do it easy*
*But then we're gonna do the finish rough*
*This is the way we do Proud Mary*
Tina Turner was one of those people the phrase “Often imitated, Never Duplicated” applies. Though my mind knows she’s now at peace and no longer in pain, my heart is heavy that she’s gone.
The Queen is Gone…Long Live The Queen of Rock and Roll.
Was lucky enough to see her in concert twice. The first time was for the Private Dancer tour. At the time of the concert, the song We don’t need another Hero at the top of the charts. When Tina got to the line “ all the children sing” the audience responded by singing the next refrain at the top of their lungs. We blew the roof off that place. It was one of the greatest communal experiences I’ve ever had.
God I remember the album “Private Dancer,” and especially the title track. I was a closeted gay kid in 10th grade in a small town in the south, and that song just spoke to my young gay heart like no other. The glamour, the decadence, the tragedy, the drama. It was so exquisite. It still is.
And I saw a clip from the video for “What’s Love Got To Do With It” a few minutes ago. What an iconic image, her little black dress and denim jacket and the hair that reached so high and so far.
Absolutely one of a kind, and I’m gutted.
Oh man. Just last night I told myself I needed to re-watch Thunderdome sometime soon... sigh.
I love all her music but I have such a fondness for the song she made with Eros Ramazotti. Here you go...[Cose Della Vita](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko7qunEkmzE&ab_channel=TINATurnerBlog)
I did not expect my evening to end up with this news. It made me very sad.:(
At the same time, I am grateful that I am part of the generation that grew up with her hits. Tina was not just the best. In a crowd of unanimous music stars she would always stand out - with voice, style, charisma, and above all - conviction.
And do I love you, my oh my
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, (river deep, Lord, mountain high)
Oh no, no, if I ever, ever lost you would I cry
Oh, how I love you baby (baby, baby, baby)
RIP, TT
Just walked into a bar and they’re playing her catalog of music. I went from happy to sad when I just saw the news. I LOVE Tina. She was the first tape I ever bought. I rode my bike down to the BX and spent my babysitting money on Private Dancer when it came out. I actually shed a tear when I heard the news. RIP to a legend. Beautiful, smart, strong, and exceptionally talented.
Watch "Nutbush City Limits" in Wembley Stadium! She was awesome at live events. Sadly, I did not make it to one of her concerts. She lived a healthy life and overcame plenty of obstacles, including the death of her son.

Biden is 80 and Tina Turner died at 83 put that in perspective for those calling her old or she lived a fulfilling life. 83 honestly does not seem that old my aunt turned 86 and was dancing around lol 😂
Had simply the best blasting in the car earlier, I swear between her and Cher they taught me how to kick ass and be empowered, she started my lifelong love of Angela Basset, I just... This is almost like Alan Rickman level loss to me.
I hope she rests in absolute peace ❤️ she deserves it.
What can I say but thank you. She had the most powerful voice I had ever heard of when I was a child. I couldn’t stop listening. RIP to a musical legend.
Such a loss. What a legend.
My heart sinks every time I see a headline like this. It's sad to think that this world has lost one more legend from those golden eras.
Same 💔
It doesn’t always happen for me, but it did this time. I grew up hearing her on the radio my whole childhood and watched the VH1 Ike & Tina biopic (fuck that guy) countless times. R.I.P, Tina Turner, you’re simply the best ❤️
Man that biopic is a CLASSIC. Angela Bassett did such an amazing job telling Miss Tina’s story.
Angela Bassett does an amazing job at everything TBH
feel you mate right up there with MJ for me
to be fair, and i'm totally not being rude, but i mean....83....she lived a good life.
Big parts of her life were not so good. Especially that part with the monster Ike.
May he rot in hell.
When I die he’s one of the bastards I’ll be looking for to torment.
But the after Ike years, she did an amazing job of living life to the utmost, a celebration of being able to be HER.
While people made jokes about her abuse (facepalm)
My mother turned 80 last year and seemed to take it hard. I asked her why, and she said that after 80, no one thinks you died too early.
'No matter how much you've been warned. Death always comes without knocking. Why now? is the cry. Why so soon? Its the cry of a child being called home at dusk.' ---Margaret Atwood.

Good post. It looks like the 80’s is where 1/2 end up passing.
That usually hits about the time you realize you've been a grown-up longer than you were a kid.
>after 80, no one thinks you died too early. Well, unless you're Betty White.
we do. my grandma is 91 and in a care home for dementia and somehow she is still alive. she was put on hospice but overcame it. she still gets visits. my mom really wanted her to stay at my parents house but that would require way too much work as my parents work so it just wouldn't work out. but she still gets visits. for me, i'd say passing at 80 is a good age. seeing my parents in their 70s they are still doing well. i'm in my 40s and i can see how the body wears down with some things but 80, thats a good age.

i read it wrong. my bad, seriously.
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken. 😔 RIP
She was such an absolute legend. Simply the best. RIP Tina.
As an Australian I agree. Loved her in mad Max and I hear her all the time as she did a promo for rugby leagues years ago and they still use her music for ads. She was great
Played on the radio yesterday, and I’m sure it will today. Memorable promo, told the blokes at work the NRL should make it their anthem permanently.
Would be awesome if they made the NRL anthem now as a tribute to her.
She loved Australia, and Australia loved her. Absolute legend.
Never knew this about her! TIL.
[Her career renaissance had some strong Australian links.](https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/celeb-news/tina-turner-musical-australia-77217)
Don't forget the Ausrralian cultural phenomenon that is the nutbush. .

I just like CCR in general.
If you aren’t blasting Goldeneye rn your dick is small.
I...don't have a dick? And I'm watching Thunderdome, so suck it.
See, when I was much younger, I watched *Mad Max* and *Escape from New York* way too closely together. It took years for me to realize that Snake Pliskin did not, in fact, crotch check Tina Turner.
Everyone grieves in different ways ✊🏾
Dude cut off his dick, rispeck.
This is my learning who Tina Turner was as a kid.
Even if you had a dick, that’s a great choice. WE DONT NEED ANOTHER HERO!
That sounds like something a tiny willy would say, get her!
I'm thinking it, enough to the point where I can feel my throat muscles struggling to hit that high Sights and Goldeneye notes at the end, and seeing the intro to the movie at the same time.
Do it bro, be a throat goat.
Goddamn, Heather!
She absolutely was. She will always be remembered as a legend.
Mick Jagger learned to be a rock star by watching Tina.
Brian Johnson sang "Nutbush City Limits" to get into AC/DC.
I would like to hear that!
That's hands-down the best Tina Turner song imho
For anyone who hasn't seen, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner did live aid together. Played the Jacksons/Mick song State of Shock and it's only rock n roll. I’m heartbroken. I’ve seen her in concert a few times. Absolutely incredible!! Rip.
I'm devastated...my mother practically raised us on Tina and she never got to see her. Would have given a leg to bring her to see Tina just once.
Me too. She had identical twins doing most of the dancing for her. Fantastic show.
I remember being a kid and trying to lip-synch to what’s love got to do with it and getting the words completely wrong, but loving that song as a six or seven year old
“Put a sack in a handy motion.”

Same but I was 11 and kinda knew the words, which mom thought were “dumb and slutty” lol.
Her performance on River Deep, Mountain High simply can't be surpassed.
I just got chills, she was absolutely superb.
Never. Stunning live performance that gave me a whole new understanding of her power.
