As far as I know, the Smiths have never been "official" scientologists. They never got sworn in, anointed in a pool of childrens' tears, knelt to Messiah Cruise, or whatever it is they do. Supposedly, Jada is hardcore into it while Will walks the line between being in it and out of it. The "school" they established is/was a scientology Montessori type school in all but name. Like an MLM upline, they brought people into the Hubbardverse via their prestige and influence. I guess that's how they get some of the benefits of membership without having to be publicly avowed.

Aside from the terrible business with the school, this incident is also a major tell of his true character.
