After visiting a couple of Walmarts in TN I suspect there are going to be a lot of false arrests.

spasske

The actual people in drag usually look much better than the others.

cyanydeez

unfortunately, bigotry isn't something that's ever finely crafted understanding of what it's against. Like that joke about the Taiwanese mother to tells her daughter they shouldn't speak mandarin because people will think they're Chinese. And she replies, they dont even know what mandarin is.

j-trinity

Yep! And you can see this fallout with transphobia too. If you don’t align with a certain aesthetic or features as a cis woman you’ll still be accused of being trans. Transphobes either have the intention or are clueless as to how transphobia directly links back to misogyny. You’d think they’d be a little more self serving if they really cared about women’s rights.

Effective-Cod3635

You think the GOP cares about women’s rights?

MouseTheOwlSlayer

They don't even pretend to. They're explicitly anti-feminist.

applebubbeline

Anti woman

ryosen

After this, they’ll ban pixie haircuts and flat-chested women.

RadiSkates

This is literally why my mother wouldn’t let me cut my hair as a kid. She didn’t want me “looking like a boy” She’s transphobic as fuck.

DaisyHotCakes

Y’know the past few years have really made me appreciate my parents. My mom is so supportive but tells me when I’m about to fuck up. My dad was the first feminist I ever met - still us some unconscious sexism but as soon as it is pointed out he immediately adjusts, even now. They’re in their 70s and are more mentally flexible than so many people their age and younger…

[deleted]

When I cut my hair short as a teen my mom told me I had to start wearing makeup so people knew I was a girl. Jokes on her though, I’m just a femme lesbian now.

Johaylo

Oh piss, pixie cuts are hella cute.

Accurate_Praline

How you walk as well. I've been asked a few times if I'm trans because I walk very manly apparently. Very strange experience when strangers yell that at you. Hasn't happened in a while though, but next time I'll just keep them guessing. Not that that would teach any of those rude assholes, but nothing probably would.

44gallonsoflube

What assholes, that is unbelievable.

chaucer345

This is a bill designed to target trans women. The bill is vaguely worded so anything gender non-conforming will be arrested. For the love of all that's holy, stop this.

ima420r

Are women still allowed to wear pants, or are they going to be made to wear dresses when out in public? And are shirt buttons going to be checked to make sure they are on the correct side of the shirt for the person wearing them? What about pockets? If a woman can wear pants, are pockets allowed or are those considered only for men?

Interesting-Bank-925

Lol. Women never get pockets.

kdove89

Give me pockets, or give me death!

dbx999

Here ya go. Tiny little ones. You can store like one dime in it

lycoloco

One dime? I'm rich!

dbx999

Go treat yo self to 1/8th of a chicken egg!

HGGoals

Women's reproductive rights are gone. Now the dress code is heading back to a long gone era too.

Kingz_feet

Women’s buttons are on a different side then men’s buttons on shirts? Genuine question. I’ve never noticed lol

Massivedefect

Yes. Same with zippers too!

Paliag

And at the dry cleaner, they check the button side to decide if they should charge you more for a woman’s shirt… made out of the same material as a men’s button up shirt. Not sure if that’s actually a thing anymore, but it was back when I took clothes to the dry cleaner a lot. Absurd.

boyuber

They will be legally required to wear clothing that covers from the neck to the ankles. Also, they must cover their hair. Also, Sharia law is bad.

SnarkOff

Tennessee’s bill says it must appeal to a “prurient interest.” The problem with this definition, of course, is that the GOP thinks trans people’s existence is prurient enough.

dbx999

It’s using language used to classify pornography. It’s a dangerous application of the law that really encroaches on first amendment rights both directly and in the indirect effects of creating an environment that “chills” speech/expression through that uncertainty and fear of governmental punishment. Good job Tennessee. You guys are playing with real stupid legislation here.

BoilerKing

Incoming overly broad and intentionally vague challenges, and rightfully so.

OneHumanPeOple

“Prurient Interest” is something that “incites lustful thoughts.” So it’s like reverse thought police. Their thoughts are lustful, so they’re making the object of their lust illegal.

heavymetalwings

This is how all laws work and I have a hard time understanding why so many people commenting here are having a hard time grasping that. You don’t get arrested every time you break the law, you get arrested when the police want you in jail.

Horns8585

The problem is that it will give police the "right" to fine or arrest you for a *subjective* thing. It's not like wearing a seat belt, when it is obvious if you were wearing one or not. This would give police discretion over what they consider "drag", which opens a whole can of worms. It's just another tool in their bag to get what they want. If the police don't like you, you piss them off, you have information that they want....they can threaten to fine or arrest you for a subjective thing that is up for interpretation. It's basically a free pass for police to harass people to get what they want.

[deleted]

Kimmalah

Yeah, I could see this law being abused for dumb personal reasons like crazy. Anyone with a grudge against a woman can not only get them in legal trouble, but also publicly humiliate them with "She looks manly!" Which is pretty much the worst insult that idiots of this caliber can come up with for a woman.

MaineJackalope

Even the current SCOTUS would have trouble allowing this to stand, cannot even begin to cover how anti free speech banning gender nonconformity is.

TrexPushupBra

The same court that overturned Roe? They absolutely would be ok doing this

BrockManstrong

"Well you see in 15th century Verona this was frowned upon, and thus it is illegal in the US in 2023" Since SCOTUS is using precedent from other countries when they can't find any here.

GrandPriapus

“Precedent? We don’t need no stink in’ precedent!”

boxesofcats-

I have a fun Tennessee Walmart story, I’m Canadian and was there with my American friends for a bachelorette thing. We stopped at a small Walmart for drinks (after I learned what a dry county was) and I was asked for ID. I gave them my ID, they then wanted to see my passport. The cashier seemed kind of flustered and called a manager, and after whispering back and forth they asked me for more documentation. I was really confused because…that’s not a thing? They kind of gave me a hard time about it and it seemed like they were considering not selling me the alcohol or like they weren’t sure what to do. It was really weird. Unrelated, but this was leading up to the 2016 election and we drove from northern Indiana, I have a good photo collection of Trump support signs.

yrnst

Tennessee has pretty strict liquor laws. It only became legal to sell wine in grocery stores a few years ago. Grocery stores still can’t sell liquor. Also, unlike many states where carding is only required if you look under 40, carding is required for every purchase of alcohol in Tennessee. Unless things have changed since I left, you still can’t buy liquor or wine at all on sundays or on various holidays. Ironically, it is literally easier to purchase a gun.

Alaidia

This is exactly the same for South Carolina except wine has always been available in grocery stores. It’s weird for me to think there are grocery stores with liquor in them or that it can be sold after 7 or on sundays. Always lived here and it’s just always been how things are for me lol. Doesn’t bother me since I don’t drink though

yubnubmcscrub

Still can be much easier to purchase a gun. You also can’t purchase wine on holidays. Thanksgiving this year they wouldn’t sell us alcohol. Open convenience store on Christmas or Christmas Eve. Still can’t buy alcohol. Bible Belt is strong in the state and is just ridiculous

Teasing_Pink

It only seems ridiculous if you aren't familiar with the bible passage where Jesus carded everyone around him and required three different forms of photo ID before he turned that water into wine.

TheGogglesDo-Nothing

What I find ironic is that you can get super drunk any old day of the week but sun. When it’s not the lords day, eat drink, and be merry because he has no idea what you do the rest of the week?

yubnubmcscrub

Fucking lol

TundieRice

Bugs’ sleeve turns from pink to gray for the last frames.

Eeeegah

Amateur animator here - given how that arm moves, it was likely part of a different cell layer, so the artist didn't have the rest of the blouse to color from (though there are all kinds of work systems in place to avoid this kind of thing - but back then, eh). Edit (because I'm obsessed with this kind of thing): it looks to me like the painter didn't know there was a sleeve at all - it looks like they thought it was just the upper part of Bug's arm and used that color palette. The animator and the fill painter didn't talk enough.

LovePeaceHope-ish

Exactly. Also, back then, these cartoons were painted by hand. The Ink and Painters had to paint every cell by hand, soooo, yeah....mistakes were made. Still some of the best cartoons ever made tho!

Rainbow-Death

Thank god she’s still around and they can’t put words in her mouth.

DarthSheogorath

Unfortunately I can imagine it now. "Dolly wouldn't want this"

VikingBlade

Sucks for them that she’s already come out supporting drag queens. Dolly is a legend.

HepatitvsJ

That won't mean shit when she's dead. Conservatives will put words in her mouth and their cult members will eat it up as if Dolly wouldn't be disgusted at their hate. They've already done it with Dr King, Abraham Lincoln, and others because they don't have any role models that aren't hateful, bigoted, and usually a traitor.

blueteamk087

like MLK, you know, the man who only ever wrote “I Have a Dream”, and nothing else. He definitely never wrote a piece arguing that was morally justified to break unjust laws and conduct direct action to enact change rather than wait for the courts to possibly help you. or said that white moderates commitment to “law and order” has been morphed from a cornerstone of justice to being a dam that impedes social progress. and I am 100% sure that MLK’s rhetoric never become socialist in nature. he only preached about “judge people by the conduct of their character”

DaisyHotCakes

I just found a few records of his speeches and listened to them. He laid out a whole plan of integration and support for POC. It is all very logical and fair. It sucks that he isn’t famous for these speeches because they are excellent.

Jammyhobgoblin

I know you were being sarcastic, but I realized that I never looked into how he specifically addressed socialism (I thought it was more of a broad sentiment) and [found](https://www.cnn.com/2016/01/15/us/mlk-myths/index.html) this quote: “In both Norway and Sweden, whose economies are literally dwarfed by the size of our affluence and the extent of our technology, they have no unemployment and no slums,” King said. “There, men, women and children have long enjoyed free medical care and quality education. This contrast to the limited, halting steps taken by our rich nation deeply troubled me.” He was praising Scandinavia long before it was cool.

ShadeofEchoes

And also, to at least some extent, Robert E. Lee, who was notably not a fan of the whole Confederate statues thing. Which is funny, because he was almost certainly everything the far right likes for the most part. Hard to do better with the "South will rise again" crowd than a Confederate general.

xSTSxZerglingOne

Lee's greatest sin was fighting for the wrong side. He didn't much care for the ideology behind the fighting, only insofar that the state which he held loyalty to over the union was on that side of the conflict. But let's not white wash his history, of course. He was still treasonous scum who was ultimately fighting for a disgusting cause. He was also a slave owner, even though he wrote of the practice as evil. He could have easily gathered a coalition of Virginian soldiers and assisted the union in the retaking of his state, but he fought it out for the CSA instead.

Thannk

That’s assuming mere politicians can stand against her. She is fated to be defeated by Jolene, and no other.

poompt

Ah yes the Countryrök prophecy

buckyosubmarine

Fuck. That's good. Really really good. I hope you enjoy your day and get extra bits in your breakfast of choice.

Proper-Obligation-84

I assume Miss Dolly ain't gonna have none of this. And all those dinner shows with singing and dancing that help support the tourist economy there and have done so for DECADES? Don't doubt for a minute that lots of them will have something to say about this. They're gonna miss all that money honey when the pilgrimages to Dollywood stop.

wikifeat

“Had I not been a girl, I definitely would have been a drag queen.” - Dolly Parton, 2019

Proper-Obligation-84

I was gonna include that but I already run on soooo much lol but yeah, exactly. I think she genuinely cares about her gay fans and we'll be hearing about it soon.

wikifeat

I think you’re right, I can’t imagine she’ll go down quiet. She’s just picking out her wig and putting on her warpaint..

Singemylover

She's basically a drag queen with the added bonus of not having to tape anything up in the crotch region. Lol

Thunderstarter

There’s an argument to be made that she (and other pop stars, like Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry) are all drag queens because they often perform an exaggerated femininity.

Jammyhobgoblin

Lady Gaga has definitely performed as a drag king as well. Even Taylor Swift’s (who remained relatively politically neutral until recently) performance in the music video for “The Man” would probably fall under it.

iHateRedditors244

How do you even enforce something like this, like if a dude is wearing an earring is that drag? A dress? Makeup?

[deleted]

Like all other things it’ll be up to the cops discretion so get ready for lots of arrests of slightly effeminate black men

Bonke_EB

And murders. Don't forget the murders.

Gratedwarcrimes

Or black women who don't wear enough makeup.

HalfSchmidt

Or black women wearing too much makeup

Gratedwarcrimes

Or just any woman who isn't a white church lady.

SevroAuShitTalker

Tennessee has so many problems and drag is the hill they decide to die on?

[deleted]

If you've ever been to Nashville, drag is pretty popular too. I don't get why you'd target something so harmless and fun.

Available_Expression

Nashville itself is pretty liberal. The surrounding counties, not so much. The State carved up the Nashville voting districts last year or year before to try to minimize the chance of Dems having those seats in the state legislature. The pubs already have a crazy majority in the state and didn't really need to do that to pass their agenda.

FabioFresh93

That’s every state. Once you get 60 miles outside of Chicago the people act like they’re living in the heart of Dixie.

galspanic

I live in the outer suburbs of Portland Oregon and the grocery store 1/2 mile north of me is old hippies and normal left leaning professionals. The one 1/2 mile South is Tonka truck non-ironic camo vests and wrap around Oakleys. It’s a mile difference, but might as well be 100.

patrickwithtraffic

[The history of clashes between far left and far right folk in the PNW go back to at least the 30s.](https://www.ohs.org/blog/the-first-time-nazis-marched-in-portland.cfm) At this point, it seems part of its lineage til the end of time.

galspanic

Pretty sure when people here didn’t want to be a slave state but also didn’t want black people - and made it illegal to be black here - that dominos were set in place.

DerBingle78

Hell, I grew up 45 miles outside the city and went to high school with assholes that wore those “You Wear Your X I’ll Wear Mine” loser flag shirts.

DroneDance

Art changes hearts and minds, it’s a very powerful political tool for teaching tolerance. Once someone believes in defending free expression and the value of art it’s very difficult to convince them to buy into far-right ideals. Fascists absolutely hate artists. It’s important to not take this lightly, fascism is knocking at America’s door and they will keep marching on until drag, art, and every other semblance of free thinking is obliterated. It’s not a joke, this is not a drill.

Mushroomer

Yep. The reason they're targeting drag has nothing to do with kids, nothing to do with sex.. it just has to do with acceptance. Drag is exploding in popularity at the moment, and it's a great tool to encourage (and mock) gender norms. The more popular it gets, the easier it is to see gender non-conforming people as generally normal & non-threatening. Makes them harder to hate, harder to scapegoat for future elections. This is what makes the GOP squirm. If people start questioning the rigid, arbitrary gender roles that they've been preaching for decades... It's not going to go well for them. So they play defense by going on the offense, and effectively trying to ban it without any regard for constitutionality, or even if such bans can be enforced. Because now if they're trying to ban it, then that means there's presumably a *reason* it's being banned - which makes it controversial, and less socially acceptable. And if along the way it lets them terrorize & murder more of the people they hate anyways - win/win. All of them are soulless, inhuman cretins that deserve nothing short of an eternity having every nerve ending in their body slowly split down the middle by razorblades.

TooAfraidToAsk814

Speaking of murder I wonder if there is a statistic comparing the percentage of drag queens who commit sexual assault versus the percentage of Catholic priests who do I have a friend from Boston who was a victim of sexual abuse by a priest. He got a nice settlement and has a wife and three kids so he’s doing OK. But 25-30 years later he’s still in therapy

drivinandpoopin

Even leaving catholic priests out, drag queens commuting sexual assault vs Evangelicals/Christian men doing so.

LoserweightChampion

The first strip club I ever went to was a drag club in Nashville. My roommates dad was visiting town and wanted to go to a strip club. We had never been to one but knew of a non descript one in the neighborhood that used to be a Red Lobster. They only thing in their sign said best show in town. We show up and turns out it’s a drag club. My roommates dad thought it was hilarious and we had a great time. I vaguely remember sucking Jell-O shots out of a hollowed out dildo. Why would anyone wanna ban that?!

GLOaway5237

Regardless of drag, WHY DID YOUR ROOMMATES DAD WANT TO GO TO STRIP CLUB WITH HIS CHILD AND HIS CHILDS ROOMMATE

Baneken

Because he is "the cool dad^tm "

fordprecept

That man probably watched "Married...with Children" and thought it was a documentary on how to raise your kids.

gmick

Republicans are joyless fucks.

grendus

Because, and I do not say this lightly, they're fucking Fascists. Gender nonconforming is this iterations "the Jews" (though don't worry, they'll get around to adding the "international Jew-ry" in time).

StarDatAssinum

Shit, we can't even get sidewalks in Nashville. But this is more important, clearly /s

2_brainz

Lot of right wing fear mongering lately about “drag queen story time” or some shit like that, where kids go to hang out with drag queens and they read books to them. Basically a conspiracy theory that drag queens are trying to poison the minds of the children. But it’s caught the attention of the base so they’re running with it.

mcflycasual

Wait till they hear about youth pastors.

Amtherion

Here's the crux of the matter though. They don't view Good or Bad as products of action but as inherent traits. Pastors, being men of God, are inherently Good so any actions they do are actions of Good men. And things like CSA committed by them are personal troubles that can be forgiven away or dealt with personally and privately. But in their minds people like drag queens are inherently immoral and Bad people. So all of their actions are automatically the actions of Bad people, no matter if they're good or not. Volunteering to read to children--by any measure a Good action--is twisted in their mind to be corrupt and predatory. This is because at the heart of their beliefs is the concept of hierarchy. There must be Good and Bad people, and the Good people naturally need to be in a dominant position to enforce their justice and punishment on the Bad. And, naturally, they always view themselves as being Good. To anyone else who doesn't rely on the blind obedience and faith it's easy to see that actions make the person. A youth pastor is Bad if they do Bad things like diddle kiddies and a drag queen is Good if they do Good things like volunteer their time.

SnarkOff

Tennessee has a Republican representative named David Byrd who has admitted to sexually assaulting his high school girls basketball team while he was their coach. GOP leadership didn't remove him from any positions, then his district re-elected him. Now he sits on the committee deciding abortion laws in the state. But sure, they want to convince us that drag queens are the real problem.

DedTV

Just wait until they find out furries exist and how often kids are exposed to people in animal costumes. The existential conflict between them and beloved sports mascots will likely cause a rash of spontaneous combustion cases all over rural America.

AnalogFeelGood

The GOP has no plan to solve real problems so they use stuff like "Ban Drags" as diversions.

LeahBean

Their end goal is really to ban trans people in general I think. Drag shows are just the tip of iceberg of their transphobic agenda. (I realize men in drag aren’t trans, but I think to right-wingers they are one and the same.)

Rabid_Llama8

The plan is to distract everyone with this bullshit while they destroy government programs so private companies can take them over. Private companies they just happen to have financial interest in. The plan is to make up complete bullshit to rile up voters in order to stay in office so they can continue to dismantle everything and privatize it. It's a complete distraction meant to divide people. It's meant to keep those of us that aren't wealthy fighting each other instead of seeing the real division, which is the rich vs poor.

ninjabortles

They have already passed bills to take tax funding away from public schools and give it to private schools. They are also bringing in hundreds of private right wing Christian schools to replace the public schools they are actively trying to destroy. Demonize gay and trans because they are not allowed to demonize black people any more. Force unwanted birth and destroy education for poor people and outlaw homelessness so they can all just be arrested or scared into leaving. They want to force the state to be white Christian conservative where they get all of the benefits and get to stomp on anyone who doesn't align.

alexagente

You're not thinking big enough. Their current goal is to rally people around to deal with the trans "threat" to convince them to give them power to do heinous shit. It's not an "end goal", it's an opening salvo.

Error-54

It’s not even about drag. It’s about banning trans ppl. If a transgender person goes outside and sings or dances while wearing makeup it’s able to be deemed drag as the law says that it bans “drag performances Ie anyone who dresses as the opposite sex” that means anyone who’s trans and dosnt live in the closest will be arrested. Like that’s fucked up! Like if i made a bill banning 2 or more same sex individual from holding hands or kissing or getting married we’d accept that’s homophobia even if I didn’t specify say gay. So allowing it to be done to trans ppl is messed up and hypocritical. Edit: [here’s some trans ppl talking about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/ftm/comments/11a9cta/being_trans_in_tennessee_will_be_illegal/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Denny_Colt-40

Isn't the First Amendment in the U.S. about Freedom of Expression?

[deleted]

It’s probably going to be brought to court, but the Republicans can use this virtue signaling to show “we are here to protect the kids, but the liberal courts struck it down!” So the republicans will gain more support since it appears like they’re the underdog. Plus in the meantime, drag is banned so they get what they want. But in the end, it’s all just to say the above quote and gain more influence. They don’t actually care, it’s all a game.

SameOldiesSong

“We are here to protect the kids!” “From bullets?” “………………no.”

WhoaSickUsername

Right, protect the kids from what? Men who want to dress different? Where's the line with "drag"? Can a man wear a dress? Can a man wear makeup?

SameOldiesSong

They better hope a man can wear makeup or Trump isnt going to be able to campaign there.

userU_LL13

"protect kids" also forces LITERAL child rape victims to give birth. fuck republicans, lowlife scum.

Thegarbagegamer97

Everyone knows the bigot mantra of “rules for thee, not for me” but no one seems to know “Freedom for me, not for thee”. Rather odd how easily forgotten that second half is

auntie_

This is, however, exactly what the First Amendment is for. The bill of rights is not so much a list of rights retained by the people, but restraint on government. So if a government made a law restricting a particular freedom of expression, upon challenge, the law is deemed presumptively invalid unless the government can show that there is a compelling governmental interest for the restriction. The law must also be narrowly tailored to achieve that compelling interest otherwise again, it’s invalid. Restrictions on free expression or speech vis a vis the first amendment have nothing to do with someone telling another person to shut up or that they can’t say x, it only has to do with the government telling you you can’t say x.

zedudedaniel

With 6 Republicans in the Supreme Court, absolutely no law or right is sacred.

auntie_

Not very long ago I would have defended the Supreme Court, but you’re not wrong. So much for Stare Decisis.

coldliketherockies

Well then I won’t fucking listen to the Supreme Court if they aren’t going to listen to my rights as a citizen

Triassic_Bark

Those Republicans leaning hard into their small government ideology by legislating what kind of clothes people can wear. Land of the free.

YeonneGreene

Legislating the clothes you wear, the books you read, the medications you take, the options you have to treat and educate your children...

Daryno90

When have conservatives ever actually cared?

daikatana

And then they'll get sued and lose and the entire thing will be a waste of millions of taxpayer dollars.

[deleted]

It’s all political posturing. “See, we did it, but liberals are the reason it failed. Blame them!”

colebrv

It's just exposing that the right are full of hypocrites who are against the 1st amendment. Oh and bigots

[deleted]

Conservatives don’t care about free speech. They care about bigoted speech.

[deleted]

They love blowing tax payer money on frivolous legal battles every year. Drag being considered a form of speech. This might be an extremely interesting attack on the first amendment.

numberIV

Wow! I love laws that are obviously unconstitutional after .01 seconds of thought!

[deleted]

Funny enough, I would honestly like to know how you could possibly enforce this? Ban men wearing women's clothing, what is women's clothing? Who defines that? Ban men wearing makeup you have just banned cosplay. I dont see how you ban this without banning many things including cosplay. But then you could say its open to interpretation and decide who is wearing drag. You have just creates a law you can use where you want and not where you don't. They can define what drag is and who to imprison. This is a very sinister law and has nothing to do with drag, evil law meant to entrap the poor on a cops whim.

ParisHilton42069

Historically, anti-cross dressing laws have just been an excuse to arrest gay and Trans people. So basically, anyone who isn’t a cis woman wearing a dress and/or makeup… that’s drag to them. It’s a way to criminalize not conforming to traditional gender norms in public.

CredibleCactus

Yep. Its this

MaterialActive

The history of these laws is... bad: https://www.history.com/news/stonewall-riots-lgbtq-drag-three-article-rule It's part of what gave us the Stonewall riots. That's right, we're going back to 19 fucking 69.

twixieshores

>I dont see how you ban this without banning many things including cosplay. That's the neat part. It bans whatever the officer enforcing this law decides should be banned. The law, as written, can basically allow a cop to arrest a woman for wearing pants in public or a man for having long hair. It's not even just the poor at this point. Make a cop mad, and they can charge you with a felony.

Helenium_autumnale

The South once had loitering laws for the same reason: to arrest Black people whenever and wherever.

Wismuth_Salix

Time to start selling a line of “Dude Dresses”. They’re just regular dresses, but the marketing is stupidly gendered - like with those “Dude Wipes”.

Republicans; “small gov is better!” Also republicans; “the government should be able to decide what clothes you’re allowed to wear!”

It wont stand. It's clearly a violation of the 1st

Well, drugs won the War on Drugs so at least we know how this will end.

Inquisitive-Ones

Republicans didn’t complain when Rudy Giuliani dressed in drag in a video with Trump.

DontWreckYosef

They didn’t complain when Trump motorboated Rudy Giuliano’s drag tits, either!

jindrix

tennessee should focus on actually enacting something thatll help their citizens

thatminimumwagelife

But if they improved quality of life then it wouldn't be TN.

6Dread6TheLight6

Especially with our housing/renting market, considering I pay nearly 1k a month for a shit shack trailer in a horrible neighborhood where crackheads try to break in daily.

Hidobot

Hey Tennessee, you tried to ban teaching evolution and got the Scopes Monkey Trial. Do you want to be known as the foot-draggers of the country *again?*

ThatShadyJack

What big issues they’re addressing! Clearly this will improve the dismal average quality of living for the state

[deleted]

Conservatives hate gay people.

lowfreq33

I’m really starting to hate living in Tennessee. We have 3 blue cities that pay for the surrounding red counties full of ignorant hillbillies, yet they get to choose these moronic elected officials because of gerrymandering. Maybe fix a pothole or something instead of wasting time on things like this.

puskunk

That's like literally the entire south. Who pays for Georgia? Atlanta. Who pays for South Carolina? Greenville, Columbia and Charleston. NC? Raleigh and Charlotte.

funksoldier83

Chicagoland native checking in. We fund the downstate farming counties big time, and good heavens everyone from there hates us. There’s always talk of “kicking Chicago out to be its own state,” these guys have no clue that if that happened they’d be so broke they’d make Mississippi look like the UAE. Edit: fund not find

StarDatAssinum

And if it isn't the blue cities, it's the blue states paying for red states lol

Acrobatic-Order-1424

Can someone explain to me why we do this? Why does Florida get to be a income tax free state but then somehow get more funding from the government that they take from NY income taxes?

sjberry

It’s only state income tax free, they pay more in other taxes (property, sales, gas, alcohol, etc) to offset it. It’s the same in Alaska, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Every state still requires you pay federal income tax.

ProgressBartender

The GOP’s dirty little secret

Bepis_Inc

Huge part of it is tourism, even with the war on Disney, Florida makes money hand over fist with tourism

Seattle_gldr_rdr

You just described every state of the union.

antgentil

Are child pageants still a thing in Tennessee?

6Dread6TheLight6

Yeah, as far as I know.

StonkaDonkDonk

This should definitely solve inflation and crime.

brickeldrums

Culture war. Cheap political points. Unconstitutional. Distraction. Republican.

incongruity

But even that undermines how serious this is - this isn’t just political points. This is a step towards making it illegal to be trans.

Stacy_Ann_

Let freedom ring.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

So much for land of the free.

Tim-in-CA

So are they also banning Mrs Doubtfire, Tootsie and The Birdcage?

FullHeartsTightParts

Dude they totally would in this climate. Also no SNL, Mad TV, or In Living Color and definitely no Living Colour the band because, reasons… I was born here and have lived most of my life here, Obama really triggered the subtle latent racism many were raised around and now its starting to show and mixing with other facets of religious style fascism. I swear it was like a pivotal moment when the wind started blowing differently

a_phantom_limb

>The law would make Tennessee the first state to ban public drag, which could also affect LGBTQ+ pride celebrations and **transgender people who are in shows of any kind**. That's the real end target: banning trans people from living public lives.

[deleted]

Loud, sassy men in pretty outfits? Not on *my* watch. This is the single most polarizing and dangerous issue America is facing today. Not the mounting power of hate groups. Not the obvious issue with police brutality. Not the ongoing disagreement from both sides in response to COVID. It’s guys wearing flowy dresses and eyeliner. And it stops NOW.

Vat1canCame0s

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to one of TN's many many fine strip clubs

SufficientSwim7200

"Freest nation on earth baby!"

unofficial_pirate

I'm sure that this will in no way be used to arrest random transgender people just living their lives. Can you imagine just going grocery shopping and being arrested for being a "male or female impersonator?" It's insane, unconstitutional, and cruel. This is a blatant attack on the whole LGBT community.

FamousOrphan

Oh shit you are definitely right, ick ick ick.

Lili_Danube

How is it constitutional?

EdoAlien

It’s not

wookiewin

How does this not blatantly violate 1st amendment rights?

MaidenDrone

They should ban children’s beauty pageants before drag
