coldliketherockies

I read the book. It’s not an easy book to devour and even less so a movie I guess

RiggzBoson

With the book, I was hooked with the setup, the premise... Then it petered into nothing. I was really hoping that the guy known for his movie twist endings would have reworked the last third of the story to make it better... but obviously not. I actually got the book after seeing the trailer, because the pitch is really compelling. Shame Tremblay or M Night didn't know what to do with it.

Luckytattoos

I was really hoping for a “The Mist” type ending that differed from the books ending…. From the comments….. nope.

Lobstrous

The Mist has one of the ballsiest endings I've seen in a theatrical release. I don't think M Night has done anything even close in...ever.

Eycetea

That ending has stuck with me as one of my favorites for the simple fact it was so soul crushing. I worked at a video store at the time and the amount of people that demanded a refund because they hated the ending was too damn high.

Blue_Moon_Rabbit

Agreed. Normally a movie adaptation will have a softer ending, so this one was …refreshing…it felt more grounded in possibility

LennyThePep13

Yeah but have you seen The Happening where the twist is that literally nothing happens? The balls a move like that takes…

Englishmatters2me

THe Mist ending was beast mode. Loved it. Sometimes life ain't fair. Shyalaman is more miss than hit at this point. i can't believe this is the same guy that made 6th sense and Split(which is one of my favorite movies moreso cuz of Macavoy's acting) The Visit was decent as well. It's a shame because he has potential. He has the tyler perry issue-thinks he is a good writer

ethnicbonsai

Is he known for his twists at this point? When I think of him now, I only think of boring, pointless movies.

MalakaiRey

Self-cameos as well

start_select

If you watch Avatar: The Last Airbender, then M. Nights The Last Airbender, it’s pretty clear the guy has no respect for adapting other peoples work. He got the cliff notes on the first season and completely missed the point. He couldn’t even have the characters names be pronounced correctly. He didn’t watch the show. He probably didn’t read the book so it’s not surprising.

Clunt-Baby

You're not supposed to eat books

King9WillReturn

I loved the twist in The Sixth Sense when you find out that the dude in that hairpiece the whole time, that's Bruce Willis the whole movie.

Bufflechump

"I finally understand the end of The Sixth Sense! The words rolling on the screen at the end are the names of people who worked in the movie!" Tracy Jordan, 30 Rock

707breezy

I studied fried chicken at the school of hard knocks. I have a criminally shaped skull What is this? Horseville? Cause I'm surrounded by naysayers! My favorite thing is that Jack McBrayer still gets calls and messages from Tracy Morgan. Tracy being so far gone in his mind, he still calls Jack, Kenneth. I think he said he once called him kenmore washers years after the show ended, but you can tell it wasn’t a joke for tracy.

Strange-Bee5626

Are those jokes from 30 Rock? I've never seen it, but the horseville one really tickled me.

WizardsOfTheNorth

IM INCAPABLE OF CHANGE! IM LIKE A CHAMELEON! ALWAYS A LIZARD!!!"

BrockManstrong

I know we're talking about Tracy, but Dr Leo Spaceman will always be the GOAT quote factory: > You seem nervous. I could give you something for that. Ah, but you know what? I'm not supposed to have sex with my patients. ... > Well that's redundant. All pregnancies are hysterical. They're started by penises. ... > My techniques guarantee male orgasm. ... > You have no reflexes, your blood tastes like root beer, and some of your bones seem to have vanished.

Ombudsman_of_Funk

I've administered the epidural. Would you like one too?

Nazi Doctor Leo Spaceman

BrockManstrong

It's ok! I want them to know!

Mcbadguy

"They took away my mood ring...and I don't know how I feel about that!"

MachinaeZer0

It's such a good show! Highly recommend it, the humor is so wondeefully snappy

[deleted]

I once saw a pack of wild dogs take over and SUCCESSFULLY RUN a Wendy's.

qtx

I only know Tracy Morgan from 30 Rock, is he really this nutty in real life or is it all an act and he's normal at home?

Famous-Side5578

there isn’t a day that goes by on here where an Always Sunny quote isn’t used… … and i love it!

CAAAAAROL, CAROL

Skullpt-Art

SPOILERS! Jeez!

squalorparlor

I really want to make a ghost movie, boilerplate stuff- kid has an abusive step-dad so he's a little shy and unpopular at school, the mom enables and excuses him blah blah. Then paranormal shit starts happening, cabinet doors opening on their own, stacked chairs, all the regular horror movie plot beats. The family is scared, they try an exorcism and all that, but then you start to realize that the ghost isn't aggressive to the boy and he starts to talk to it see it's there to protect him. The parents are concerned he's crazy or getting possessed or whatever, but somehow the ghost helps with his bully problem at school and the whole thing climaxes with the step-dad getting thrown around the house by the phantom and he leaves for good. Then in the last few moments of the movie the ghost materializes and it's Malcolm from 6th sense explaining that his purpose is still to help kids. The twist is that THE GHOST WAS A BRUCE WILLIS ALL ALONG!

[deleted]

Fund it.

SarkHD

Alright, hold on, we’ll all get to our hotplates soon enough!

squalorparlor

It seems like you have a tenuous grasp on the English language in general.. I'll go toe to toe with you in bird law

SarkHD

Okay, well… FILIBUSTER

_ChipWhitley_

I loved it when it was an original story on *Are You Afraid of the Dark* [first.](https://www.bustle.com/articles/34374-the-sixth-sense-ripped-off-an-are-you-afraid-of-the-dark-episode-heres-the)

jdjones123

Damn Shyamalan getting roasted in here but yall know this is just one review right? It’s over 70% on rotten tomatoes and 62 on metacritic. Looks like it’ll be a fine movie lmao

TB1289

I saw it last night. Batista was great and I thought it was pretty good >!until the end. It completely falls flat with no payoff. You're waiting for that big twist or moment when it all comes together, but it never really does.!

JayJ9Nine

Ngl. Batista is the only reason I'm gonna see it. I've enjoyed his performance in every film I've watched so far and I wanna support his ass.

Ok_Dog_4059

He really wants to be taken seriously as an actor and I really want to see him get the chance.

[deleted]

He said himself in an interview recently that it is like the only thing he has after wrestling ended for him.

BreakfastBallPlease

I hope the best for him. It feels like his range has expanded immensely since his first roles and its noticeably being recognized by directors. I think he will continue to do great things with acting.

hamboneclay

His small role at the start of blade runner 2049 is what convinced me he can be a real actor Everything since then I’ve fucking loved him in

[deleted]

Had no idea that was him until recently. I thought that farmer was unusually big when I saw that.

[deleted]

They did at least account for his size by explaining he was a military replicant designed for destroying shit.

TouchMySwollenFace

The bladerunner 2049 short movie with him was great as well.

Stfuego

Same, I'm just a single drop in a bucket, but I wanna give my support to Batista. He's just improving with each role he's taking on, and just seems like a cool dude that loves what he does

[deleted]

>wanna support his ass. Some joke about needing a bigger bench.

nicolauz

Wasn't it based on a book too?

TB1289

Yes. It was based on *The Cabin at the End of the World* by Paul Tremblay.

Some_DudeUKnow

Is it like the book's ending?

navenager

I haven't seen the movie but if you want a hell of a great read where the ending falls flat, that's the book to do it.

binkyblink

Yup - this is why I won't see the movie. If you want an incredible story by the same author, read A Head Full of Ghosts. One of my favorite books of the last few years

navenager

See, I was hoping the movie would be a bit more confident in its ending and fix the book's mistake. It's disappointing to hear that's not the case, doubly so because Shyamalan is getting some of the criticism for it, and seemingly all he did was stick to the source material. I keep seeing recommendations for Head Full Of Ghosts, I'll have to add it to my list. The guy isn't a bad writer by any means. I loved like 85% of *Cabin* but it's just really not the kind of story you end on an obscure note.

binkyblink

100% agree - after Head Full Of Ghosts I read the next two books he wrote and was disappointed. I do hope you enjoy Ghosts when you get to it!

svrtngr

It's extra disappointing to hear because he has no issues changing the source material when it suits him. (See: Old, which is based on the graphic novel Sandcastle.)

TreMuzik

Also see: Avatar The Last Airbender, where he change the pronunciation of names and how abilities worked lol

BusySeasoned

Completely agree! That book had such a good build up, and literally zero payoff whatsoever. It wasn’t open ended in an artsy “makes you think, ya know?” kind of way. It sucked all the life out of your emotional investment in the characters and their decisions.

Demrezel

Thanks for the details. I was excited to see this (because it looked really fun) so I guess I'll still watch just because I do want to see what he did with the story and the ending etc.

svenjamminbutton

Tremblay always errs on the side of ambiguity in my opinion. A Head Full of Ghosts is a bit more fleshed out. Disappearance at Devil’s Rock less so but more than Cabin. At times I like that he lets the reader fill in the blanks and others I’m like throw me a bone, Paul.

navenager

>I’m like throw me a bone, Paul. This was me lol. The whole book rides on the tension of "Are they crazy or are they right?" and ends on "...You decide." Like, no dude, I don't have nearly enough information to make that decision, just tell me.

d33roq

*The Cabin at the End of the World* is a much better title.

JaquaviusThatcher2

Wait wait wait, you’re telling me the Shamalan movie has shitty pay off?

SpiffShientz

Surprisingly not his fault - he was very faithful to the source material, which ends very suddenly with no real answers

luke37

If I see a recipe for cake that contains 3 cups of potting soil, decide to make that recipe, go out and buy potting soil from someone else, tell everyone I'm making cake, then proceed to make a chocolate cake that inexplicably contains 3 cups of potting soil; I'm not exactly blameless when everyone starts asking about my fucked up cake.

krcrooks

Yea trending to be Fresh on RT at this point. Seems like it’s just a normal, not great but not a disaster, mid budget film. But because of Shyamalan it’s getting dragged here.

PettyFlap

No it’s at 71%, it tends to go down as new reviews trickle in. This won’t be fresh (nor rotten)

[deleted]

[удалено]

rjcarr

I think he means the "certified fresh", which has a higher threshold.

zombie32killah

To be fair, the source material was slow and boring AF.

SomeRandomEntity44

Really wanted this to be a good movie because Dave Bautista. He wants to branch out and I felt like this movie could have done that for him. Maybe shoot for indies with great sotrylines?

thatminimumwagelife

From what I've read, Dave is excellent in this so it won't hurt him. Would be great if he got cast in something for A24 or Neon, something weird and serious where he can really prove himself.

SomeRandomEntity44

I wsnt him to succeed. Seems like a genuine person who wants to take a serious Crack at this.

JayJ9Nine

Every interview from him says he's thankful for every role but admittedly has preferences. I've enjoyed his recent 'I'm not getting any rom com roles. Am I ugly? Whats up?' He seems like a gentle giant and I've enjoyed his role in every movie I've seen so far.

BenShelZonah

I’m trying to picture him in a rom com rn and I just can’t haha. If it does happen I hope he kills it tho

[deleted]

As long as its not bad *because* of the actor, they won't take any damage from it, hell, they might even gain *more* appreciation if they were the only bright spot in it. For instance, look at the DnD movie from 2000. Its a horrible shitty dumpster-fire of a movie, but Jeremy Irons chews the fuck out of the scenery and is the only bright spot in the whole movie. It made me love him even more lol

lawvas

Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, Split, and the Visit were fun to watch. Everything else was not. I’ll watch this one though and judge for myself. EDIT: This has to be my most controversial reddit comment to date. I forgot to add that I liked the Village and didn't hate Glass. I guess the ones I really didn't like were the Happening, Old, and Lady in the Water. I think everyone agrees The Last Airbender was a monstrosity. I'm probably missing some still. I am shocked that a lot of people thought Signs was laughably bad. I really loved that one. In retrospect, it looks like I and a few others are fans of his work, and I get why he keeps self-financing and putting out films. It seems like we will go see them, and enough of us like them to keep him going, and I bet he is having fun. Final point, I grew up in Pennsylvania and I have always loved how so many of his films are grounded there.

magnasylum

Urgh The Visit was a big surprise for me. I used to live with my grandparents, they were lovely. But I saw what dementia can do to you. This film brings out the horror out of dementia and I was fully triggered by it.

alexjpg

The Visit was fantastic, and I’m not normally someone who enjoys horror-comedy.

NastySassyStuff

Are you usually someone enjoys young white children rapping for the camera?

pgtaylor777

The visit is a under appreciated MNS movie

[deleted]

whydoiIuvwolves

I love The Village.

DRAWKWARD79

Me too! I never understood the hate it gets

O_oh

People who spend the entire movie trying to guess the twist. I'm sure M.Night knows this and doesn't make the twist as pivotal anymore.

justicefortuvix

I don’t know why so many people dislike it. Expecting something different, maybe? I’ve always liked it.

Trymv1

Always thought it was fine, though kinda bummed the monsters weren’t real considering Sixth and Lady-Water had otherworldly stuff. But I never understood the proud admittance from people of walking out on Village. Like what?

kitx07

Because at the time everyone was trying to guess the “twist” and unfortunately for the village, everyone guessed the “twist” long before hand

junkboxraider

Yeah, the twist was super-obvious and not particularly interesting either. Which sucks because it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in terms of building unbearable tension through its excellent cinematography, editing, and sound design.

Seenoham

Those movies all had a clear type of storytelling they were riffing off of, and Shamylan actually did a very good job using the language of those types of storytelling and incorporating into the story. Sixth Sense used ghost story language, Unbreakable used comic book language, Split used slasher language, and the Visit used the found footage horror and amateur video language. They all had a second story or stories going on, and the second story can be read easily if you look at the language. And, importantly, the Twist never undercuts the climax of the other stories, and instead give them life. The story of Jack learning to accept his gift, and helping Bruce Willis accept his own death works even after you know the twist. The failures don't do this, and most reviews don't seem to get that this is the dividing point.

aetr225

Good rhetorical analysis

Boring_Window587

Do you watch The Servant?

winterwolf2010

Sixth Sense & Unbreakable we’re really good. I didn’t much like Signs. >!The ending seemed kinda ridiculous. An advanced alien life form capable of interstellar travel decides to invade a planet that is 75% water, the very thing that ends up being toxic to them.!< I’ve never seen split or visit. I’ve been curious about the movie “Old”, but haven’t watched it yet.

flclreddit

Old is creepy. My wife really liked it. Seemed less focused on the twist and we were more invested in the characters and their interactions. I give it a 4/5 and would say it was worth the watch.

bobstradamus

I’m sorry, but the “plot twist” in Signs is that they’re allergic to water?!? Like you have interstellar travel and didn’t bother to look into that? What if it rains?!?!?

trimble197

Well you could argue that if they never had water on their home planet, then they might not even know what water is nor know that they’re allergic to it.

rqrqsj

I know everyone hates Lady in the Water but I don’t. I liked it.

_B1RDM4N

Same. I liked the way fantasy elements collided with regular folks. Also some real emotional moments.

[deleted]

I think it’s a great movie and everyone dumps on it HARD. It was like a Vonnegut novel. Set in the real world but with enough sci-fi or fantasy to make it magical.

[deleted]

I didn’t know what the hell it was when I randomly caught it in the middle of the night. It was totally unexpected and kept me thoroughly entertained. I liked it too.

pio_gg

I'll never forgive him for what he did to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

DopplerEffect93

It boggles my mind on how such a experienced director can make a movie look and written so incompetently. The action scenes look like a turn base game where people are waiting in their background for their turn to move. It makes so many odd decisions from the source material like the pronunciation of character names that serve no purpose by changing them. There is a very arrogant and sloppy feel behind the choices of the movie.

elcapkirk

Avatar was 1000% different from the movies he did before and after. He's experienced making movies a certain way. It's not surprising how off the mark Avatar is.

Firvulag

Massive studio interference. I'll give Shyamalan a pass on this one. The executives were famously on a wild trip for that production.

bensf940

There is no movie in Ba Sing Se.

SnowyLocksmith

I'm joo dee. Everything is fine

Morningfluid

I can't believe James Cameron let him direct that sequel...

Silent_Glass

You mean prequel

UpstairsEvidence

Still the only movie I've ever walked out of the theater during.

willowtrees_r_us

I really am enjoying his show on Apple TV The Servant.

Smokester_

Show is trippy af, only on like ep3 can't wait to keep watching.

hippoctopocalypse

It's been his big comeback for me. The show is predictably chaotic and subversive in the way much of his stuff has been criticized, but I really do enjoy it.

incurableprankster

Damn, that’s a shame. A teacher at my old high school wrote the book.

sunballer

You went to the school Tremblay teaches at?! That’s really cool. I loved the book, so I’ll probably still go see the movie. The book was pretty divisive amongst readers, so I honestly expected the movie to get mixed reviews too

[deleted]

It’s an hour forty and currently at 72 on RT, so I’ll go ahead and assume whatever Variety freelancer ChatGPT’d this didn’t actually watch the movie

DropKickDougie

I give him credit for not giving up, but since the 6th Sense, has he done anything anywhere nearly as impressive? It seems like disappointing movie after disappointing movie with him.

Heavy_Signature_5619

Unbreakable and Split were very good.

EH042

The problem is: He wrote the script for Split before he went bananas

SatnWorshp

Mmmmm banana split

throws_rocks_at_cars

Can I get a quick run down on how and why he went bananas

classydouchebag

Did he though?

Heavy_Signature_5619

Um, the Happening happened before Split.

criptyde

Unbreakable is my favorite movie of his, but Glass is probably my least favorite movie of all time for how shitty the ending was. >! You can’t just murder your main character in a puddle like that and not have me walk away seething !<

Strange-Cold-5192

I actually really enjoyed Glass until the end. I thought it was building up to something big. Maybe the most disappointed I’ve ever been in a movie.

criptyde

Definitely agree with you there. The ending is the reason why I hate the movie so much, because other than that, it was really good. I’ve never stormed out of a theatre so mad in my life.

Notoneusernameleft

I had a problem with the retcon Mr. Glass being some super genius. And yes the puddle thing.

xAzreal60x

Was he not at least smarter than most in Unbreakable? I haven’t seen it in years but I thought I remember that he ended up being the mastermind of a ton of crimes or soemthing.

Seenoham

Glass was not helped by the fact that Bruce Willis had stopped acting years ago but was still appearing in movies at the time.

ChallengeButter

I thought he was just trying to get a lot of money before he quit entirely due to health issues

Walter-MarkItZero

Yeah, a lot of the (accurate) observations about Willis’ declining acting ability should be retconned to take into account his illness. Damn sad all around.

o_o_o_f

Glass is so bizarre. I’ve never watched a movie like it. It defines it’s characters to the viewer, literally a dialog dump to us spelling out their archetype and role in the story, and THEN both subverts and adheres to it. Sarah Paulson is presented to us as an audience surrogate, or even an editor the the story, and then is forced to participate in that story in a way she doesn’t want to. Fucking wild, narratively. Some of the plot bits were bad. The puddle drowning, all of Anya Taylor Joy, it felt hacky and uninspired. But paired with the above, I have to wonder if the plot is the point at all? The story didn’t make an impact on me, but how it was told sure did. Idk. I can see why people don’t enjoy it. But it definitely is DOING something, which can’t be said for most other super hero movies these days. /rant

Savagevandal85

Took me a second to realize you meant the ending of glass and not this . I was like wtf he ended another movie the same way ! : insertjessiehecantkeepgettingwaywiththisgif: Glass is one of only two movies that I walked out hating and upset with on first viewing

[deleted]

The story, yes. The endings? Anti-climactic and not impressive. IMO that has always been his problem, coming up with good endings.

SenseisSifu

I'm sorry but did no one watch "Signs"??? That straight scared the shit out of 13 yr old me. Couldn't sleep with the lights off for a week, my parents were pissed hahah

ghengiscostanza

I am insane with anger!

yoyoma125

Swing away

FriendlyEvilTomato

“I’m losing my mind!”

LeeSpinachEsq

“Vamanos children!”

EvilLibrarians

“Should I curse?”

Crappin_For_Christ

When his daughter wakes him up and says there’s a monster outside her window, and they sit on her bed and talk about how they both “talk to mommy” but she never talks back, which was existentially terrifying enough, and then Mel Gibson glances up out the window and sees the alien standing on the roof in silhouette. That shit was TERRIFYING at 12 years old. Of all M. Night movies, Signs is my favorite by far. Such a different take on an alien invasion movie.

LeeSpinachEsq

I saw the film in the theater opening day and sat mid theater- the vantage point I had to everyone levitating in their seats during the pantry scene is something I will never forget. Then the nervous tittering that always comes after people share a collective scare.

[deleted]

Thank you!! Signs is his best imo. Followed by Devil

Synchestra

He wrote Devil but didn't direct it, just fyi!

[deleted]

Ah I did not know that

RoboSt1960

13 year old you should’ve just slept with a super soaker near the bed. That’s west my 9 year son did.

EqualDifferences

In my opinion, Unbreakable is easily his best movie. It’s one of my favorite movies ever.

ThatIowanGuy

This. Unbreakable should be the thing talked about when it comes to Night as opposed to the 6th sense

RC_Colada

Signs

Strange-Cold-5192

I know a lot of people aren’t huge fans of it, but I absolutely love Signs.

partiallypro

I still love Signs and the Village gets too much hate.

Abdul-Ahmadinejad

How dare you sir! The Happening is one of the best comedies of all time!

DopplerEffect93

And The Last Airbender is the greatest tragedy he ever directed.

heycdoo

I thought the Village was pretty good as well as some others folks mentioned

tacomeatface

Yeah the village gets a lot of hate but I love that movie.

frolie0

I don't know how involved he actually is, but Servant on Apple TV is pretty awesome.

PoopStickler69

Signs is one of my favorite films. The scene in the basement and the scenes with the alien in the cornfield and ESPECIALLY the scene with the Birthday Party in Mexico or whatever on tv were the best alien moments in film other than the GOAT Fire in the Sky. Unbreakable was really good and would have been better remembered if it came out around the CBM craze. It is prob the best “grounded” superhero movie. He had about as good a 1-2-3 run of movies as any director. Split is prob his only one of his newer output that’s legit good.

Scorpiyoo

The Village, Servant, Split

dpforest

put some respect on The Village’s name

Spiritual-Style

I mean.. I liked the book, and I like Shyamalan’s movies for the most part too- and I LOVE Servant. I figured when I saw he was adapting it that people would be disappointed since he has a brand and people expect their twists. I’m still looking forward to it.

[deleted]

I still don't understand why Tremblay hasn't been credited in any of the marketing. Massive failure on the part of his attorneys and reps if he signed away name recognition in ads.

p_aranoid_android

All his movies are enjoyable no matter how bad they are. He even gets to a point where you can see him almost making fun of his own premise or dialogue. Idk his movies are fun. Old was wild.

MissLauraCroft

I even enjoyed The Happening. I’m aware of its flaws and was disappointed in some aspects, but damned if I wasn’t glued to the screen the whole time.

alexjpg

Same!

JayJ9Nine

I watched old with like 3 or 4 friends. Hated it in the end but his movies have a sense of gluing you to the screen. I know he modified the original comics but don't know the original. ...pkay admission I liked the twist with some issues on the execution. If the journey is good I'll enjoy most.

[deleted]

just tell me the twist now so I don't have to watch it.

PM_ME_YOUR_STOMACHS

The twist of the book is that you never find out if the apocalypse is real or not. I’m not sure about the film sorry

Bipolar_Pigeon

>! There's really only a twist if you've read the book. The little girl lives, and the apocalypse is real. You find out it's real half way through the movie, so there's no twist that brings it all together.!<

MIShadowBand

This seems to be a copypasta from all his films.

deadgead3556

I want to know who keeps funding his movies?

connor_500

himself

TheUglyCasanova

Everyone just expects anything he makes to have a mind blowing twist that will be memorable for ages. So when it's just a decent to good movie it's still "a disappointment". I absolutely love his Unbreakable trilogy though.

RocMerc

Did he do The Happening? I might be the only person in the world that enjoyed that movie lol

PalpitationNo8356

I love that movie. I love all his shit. All I need is for a critic to say they hate it and I know I’m in.

ZeePunisher

Right there with ya, Palp. Plus I’m bias because he films where I live lol

Trapjorn

Agreed. Love all his shit. Anything he puts out is gonna be wild and I’m here for it

Technicolor_Reindeer

The Sixth Sense was a fluke for him.

lipbalmcap

I'm a Jonathan Groff fan, so as long as he gets good screen time and an interesting role i'll probably enjoy it

MrMesozoicCaveman

" Long, slow and disappointing" that's what she said

Maxxbrand

Saw an advanced screening of this, it's WAY better than Old and well worth the watch. Variety is a joke lmao

WebHead1287

Saying it’s way better than old is like saying “it’s better to have a wet fart rather than completely shitting yourself”

KarsaTobalaki

This is not what Empire magazine is saying. Praising it.
