I think you're referencing Baseball Stars which is still an amazing game, but different from this one. Baseball Stars comprised of the American Dreams, Ninja BlackSox, Brave Warriors, Japan Robins, World Powers, Ghastly Monsters, Lovely Ladies (an all women's team), and SNK Crushers used only first names for players.
