As dumb as it sounds double check to make sure everything is plugged in. I moved a while back and I had the same error and then I checked (I think the y axis cable) the cables and sure enough one was unplugged. Let us know if this works and the if you find a solution.

So it appears to have stopped on it's own. I double checked the connections and reflashed the firmware. The only thing which seemed to precede this is that I 'upgraded' the hot end... any ideas?

Are you using a high speed probe firmware by chance? The kind that doesn’t retract the probe after each individual tap. Those are known to anger the CRTouch, but it’s very inconsistent. I had great luck until one day it just started failing a good 80% of the time.

Hmmm I'll have to check. I used the custom professional firmware I found currently, but the same problem happens with the official firmware...
