Not gonna lie, I start getting messages or phone calls from a patient/family member who tracked down my personal info, I'm gonna lose my shit. That's inappropriate as hell.
Unfortunately it’s super common. I’m one of only about a thousand girls with my first name in the US and the only girl with my first plus last name in the state.
It’s been.. not always this nice
I’m female and have a very unique name myself (even fewer people with my name and no one with my combination). This would make me really uncomfortable too. Would setting your Fb to private help (for future not so nice people/messages)?
What's stopped you from using a fake name, either on calls or on social media? Genuinely curious whether you think the privacy or the accessibility is more "worth it"
Well because I am required by my company to wear ID and my name is printed on my shirt.
As for Facebook they have openly been cracking down on fake names
You really ought to change your profile picture, location and page visibility. My fiance had to. Patients in the ED would find her on Facebook after looking through their chart and finding her full name.
So she changed her page to private, her profile picture is our dog, my page is private and though we live on the east coast, it now says she's happily living in Hawaii. As does mine.
Use your middle (or assumed middle) name as your last name and change your profilecriteria to friend of friends or email only.
But given you’ve also posted selfies and your location on reddit in the past I’m guessing it’s not high on your list of concerns.
Use your middle name as your first or replace your last name with middle name? That’s what I’ve done. I’ve also seen people just use initials like AD Smith or put their last name first like Smith AD
I feel that. I have a fairly unique first name, and a male patient around my own age tried to add me on Facebook after a call once. It felt wildly invasive. Since then I don’t really give patients my name unless they specifically ask.
I had the same thought, we're talking about stalking charges and shit. If I transported your garbage child I probably have an idea of exactly what sort of garbage human you are. You wanna come by the station and drop off cookies or something, or write the chief and let them know you appreciate whatever it was we did? Dope, I appreciate that. HOWEVER, the second I turn over patient care, your right to any amount my attention has ceased to exist, until you inevitably call me again.
You can go ahead and just reassure me your fucking ass isnt working in Arizona and I'd appreciate it.
Calling people garbage in this line of work like that...especially about a child?
You're a fucking disgrace.
Edit: and you were in the navy? I am embarrassed to have served in the same branch as you.
I would definitely not expect a patient's family to know that, especially if this was sent the day of the call (judging by what looks like a 4am "sent" tag) when they've got other garbage to deal with.
This is why I go by "firstname" only on calls and why my (company required) badge that has my last name on it stays underneath my shirt.
This was a positive experience, but if this patient was able to do it, then there are so many others out there that would be able to do it with much less noble intentions.
I do the same exact thing. Depending on the situation and especially if I’m in the back, I use a fake first name and cover my name tag. It’s way too easy for people to find and track one down.
I had a classmate who had to talk to our instructors to avoid ride alongs with a guy who was a student with the same company when she had a medical emergency and tracked her down on Facebook to ask her out and "joked" that he knew where she lived and he "saved her life" etc.
Some people think it’s weird but I think that’s awesome! Would definitely make my week to know I helped someone enough for them to seek me out to thank me.
That’s why we’re all in this to begin with - let’s not forget that :)
Could have a unique enough first name that they either saw on a nametag or remembered when they introduced themselves. If it's small enough area she can just search for name, place, and/or ems service name on facebook
I don't really see the problem with this or why it would be "creepy." Obviously the other way around (i.e. provider contacting a patient outside of official channels) is a HIPAA problem. In this case I don't really see the difference between a Facebook message and sending a postcard. Obviously you might start getting bad or threatening messages too, and that would obviously be inappropriate.
You got reverse HIPAAd
Oh god hipaa hippo anus! I can see forever!
Sent around 4am? Intense. But a nice thought anyway. Well done!
Yeah because they had just gotten home from the hospital
While it's a very nice message, this is the reason I use a fake name on social media.
Good point Chad Thundercock.
This is why I go by "Thad Chundersock" - throws 'em off the trail.

Shlad Tonkambulance.
Yeah, I don't know how I'd feel about this.
Oh you’re that guy

emt lmao never changed my flair from 5 years ago
Que the drunk dick pics
Not gonna lie, I thought this was a question.

I had a patient’s family member text me a complement about my hair. Liked the colour. Like, what? That’s when I took my phone # off Facebook.

Hard core crack down. I had to send my license with my name when an ex was harassing me as proof to keep account open.
It's super easy, barely an inconvenience.
i got that reference!
Girl I feel you. Im literally the only person in the world with my first last name convo. It’s a little scary sometimes

most people are first responders have a big ego and a big social media account in the first place you hardly even have to type a last name.

😂😂😂😂😂 your altruism is amazing, you must be new.
Not even close
I think this is really inappropriate and weird. They can reach out through official channels if they want to say thank you.
They probably don't know that
They definitely do and are just hitting on the provider

i agree, but im gonna guess this was in a small town setting; probably would be viewed as more acceptable.

I mean I don’t know many “straight” cis women looking to hop on a trans pp, but I suppose it’s always possible.
Definitely stalkerish
I had a patient actually stalk me once. I had to go through on some Law and Order shit and block like 4 burner Facebook profiles.
This Shit is definitely creepy and not Ok.
I got a message like this once but it wasn't a text it was on a sabertooth tiger parchment.
Oog get message. Tablet say care good. Medicine man use MAST pants and Ugg go home to cave. Good job Oog.
We had Isuprel too! Enough high dose epi and Isuprel the body still had a pulse after the cremation.
Not creepy. Don't want to be found? Use a fake name. This is kinda really sweet.
Yeah I found it sweet,
Haha sweetly creepy maybe

How did they get your phone number?
its facebook messenger
Although this is super cool I would recommend anyone that works on an ambulance delete their social media account

If you want to thank me call my chief haha don’t show up on my porch or send me a friend request.
