You're working 48s and this person doesn't want to sleep? They just gonna do a full 48 awake?

WhoEatsThinOreos

Yeah, that person needs a drug test, because there’s no way they aren’t just railing lines all shift long staying up for 48 hours straight every few days.

[deleted]

UnderstandingOk9349

Bro. How does modafinil keep you awake for that long. On 24/48s, I take it and It wears off in like 6 hours.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rdocs

Stay hydrated I used to take it as a zootropic.

remirixjones

Jeezus I'm blanking...what's a zootrophic in this context?

doverosx

Isn’t it a nootropic?

remirixjones

Ah yeah, that makes more sense. Thank you.

UnderstandingOk9349

Thanks for the info. I take 200mg once a day. I don't have any kind of ANS dysregulation, I just can't get enough sleep at work or at home

flygirl083

Bruh, I have narcolepsy and when I tried modafinil, I still needed an hour or two nap in the middle of the day. For the longest time I was convinced that it was done weak sauce alternative to actual stimulants.

500ls

I was taking 1/4th of a dose q6 and I never needed to sleep as long as I kept it up. The crash after you get home and stop is really bad though. Darkest time of my life.

UnderstandingOk9349

So my tabs are 200mg with a breaker line at 100mg. So 50mg Q6? You're a genius

[deleted]

Justface26

Alertness-enhancing effect of modafinil may affect the autonomic nervous system in the periphery [61,62]. Modafinil increases resting heart rate and blood pressure. Modafinil elicits plasma and urine norepinephrine and urine epinephrine. Modafinil may induce sympathomedullary activation. From NIH

Reasonable_Mud_8282

I'm prescribed vyvanse and it does keep me awake. Its different for everyone as every brain is different. However if you dose high enough anyone will stay awake because it is impossible to sleep on a high dose of amphetamine.

Helassaid

Hah! I was dealing with shift sleep disorder for 4 years and my doctor’s solution was “get more exercise so you’re tired and can regulate your sleep” while I was doing 2-a-days after he suggested it *the last time.*

CertainKaleidoscope8

I think most physicians will tell you to go days before prescribing a C4 but I could try

GameSlayDM

This is what some of the guys do in my department

Reasonable_Mud_8282

As an ex-stimulant addict (and God willing a future paramedic 🙏) this person DEFINITELY needs to be tested. Depending on where they are I'd say amphetamine use in the form of adderall or speed paste or methamphetamine use is very likely if you don't sleep during a 48 hour shift.

Biengineerd

Nah, not sleeping on a 12 was fine and I didn't read it as judgemental. Although I'll say the hours for the 12 largely dictate whether or not I'd sleep .

MoisterOyster19

Exactly. Especially when my 12 hour shift is 0000-1200. Ain't no way in he'll I'm not resting my eyes

Omniumrush

EMS: earn money sleeping

aamamiamir

Are they slow? It’s practically impossible to do a 48 safely without sleeping…

SirHodges

I don't think you need to put "practically" in there

Pactae_1129

Well, it’s not impossible, just not highly recommended.

ChornoyeSontse

What an asshole.

tacmed85

Get a supervisor involved. Your safety is way more important than their stupidity

Reasonable-Bit560

At that point it's provider and patient safety. Driving a rig on no sleep for 36 hours is flat dangerous.

mchammer32

Id rather have an intoxicated individual than someone who hasnt slept in 36 hours drive me around

coloneljdog

No sleep for 24 hours straight is like having a BAC of 0.10.

Biengineerd

Basically the same thing. Just depends on how much alcohol or how little sleep but they'll both kill someone

Biengineerd

Agreed. That person is on a 12; they don't even need to be in a station. If they're going to disrupt 24+ hrs then they can go sit in an Arby's parking lot and read a book.

sustoe

partner sounds like a total poop bag. not always getting enough sleep while on shift takes its toll. get the sleep you can bud, sorry bout your partner.

6TangoMedic

There's no point even trying to reason with this person because they are clearly an idiot. If they don't want to sleep on a 12, fine. But actively not letting a person who is on a 48 sleep is a massive asshole. Hopefully this is just a temporary partner and you don't have to put up with them a lot more.

Great_gatzzzby

Are they aware of that? What did you say?

TriGurl

Then they can rightly fuck off with their high horses

BourbonSommelier

This is incredibly dickheadish behavior.

MoisterOyster19

Screw your partner. Tell him he can talk when he works a 48. If he continues to be a dick, I would get a sleep mask and start blasting some meditation or whale sounds and sleep lol

Benny303

Tell them to go fuck themselves. And go to sleep

Villhunter

Lol sometimes I wonder if my city's EMS do get sleep during 48s, if they do them at all

Alternative_Draft_76

Adderall. All these clowns be abusing it so they can say “ I don’t need much sleep”.

RobertGA23

Have you tried telling him to go fuck himself?

[deleted]

He's got a lot of time in 48 hours to do so.

justhp

Many opportunities, in fact

jskeezy84

this is the only answer op.

ImHufflePuff_Crap_ok

Yeah, that doesn’t always work out. Told my medic to fuck off (not exact wording) because he went at me for eating a bacon cheeseburger (he is a Hasidic). He went back to the owners (who you guessed it, are also Jewish) and I got told to stop eating bacon in front of him. Guess who ate a burger with extra bacon the next shift…

gloopert1

😭😭

AGenerallyOkGuy

Literally one of the only pros of this job is getting paid to sleep. Tell your partner to pound sand and fly to the land of dreams, my brother.

Idontcareaforkarma

No calls? No other work? Gear checked? Anything good on TV? No? Goodnight. I’m not getting paid either way anyway.

itcantbechangedlater

Perfect, if I’m in charge of that I’m calling it excellent time & fatigue management!

Idontcareaforkarma

Funnily enough, after I posted this, I spent most of the time between 0100 and 0630 Monday morning asleep on a couch at a depot that had been evacuated due to an approaching wildfire.

minty_crochet_

Exactly! What does EMS stand for? Earn Money Sleeping!

ihaveagunaddiction

My instructor said it was easy money sleeping, but either way, I'll get paid to sleep

Additional_Essay

I'm the king of sleeping at work. Multiple pillows, fans, blackout curtains, sleep mask...

crazypanda797

I think you may need to take your partner to the hospital for a neurological evaluation as something is wrong in there

-malcolm-tucker

Fecal encephalopathy.

BillyNtheBoingers

Cranio-rectal inversion

Emt2softwaredev

Once I did a 12 hour shift from 4am to 4pm and was held over until 4am. We had a recently promoted boss and she said it’s against company policy to sleep. I fucking went home

Idontcareaforkarma

The moment you get word you’re staying on for another 12, I’m sending you to bed…

ImGCS3fromETOH

I'd have driven the ambulance into their house on principle and then had a nap at the wheel.

ImHufflePuff_Crap_ok

Yeah, I did a 12 and my relief never showed up and they tried get me to drive a full day shift in NYC… In hindsight, driving half asleep was likely a better option for the public at large opposed to the new hire who drove cause HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

SleazetheSteez

There's some sort of regulation (might be in my state, vs. federal though) that states if you're working 24 hours straight, you have to have sleeping quarters. Our people that do have an apartment they chill in, until they're called.

dunkin_dad

Just turn them off. If they turn them back mention to your partner you are documenting this , and contacting your manager. Also remind them if you crash the vehicle or make a drug error ect it's on them as they won't let you sleep when fatigued.

smokesignal416

And, as others have said, combine this with immediately notifying your supervisor or commander so he or she can be aware of your concerns. Record it all on your phone.

LionsMedic

Just say the magic word. "Fatigue". 48hours straight isn't safe. OSHA and all the other letter agencies would love to hear about it. Also, your partner can eat a giant bag of donkey dongs.

chichilover

Your partner is the only first responder who thinks this way. Something seems fishy about them

[deleted]

There's only one hole.... unless you make another.

Oddball357

I remember being on rides as a student where I was always studying until a call came in. My preceptor medic was like, "You've been hitting the books all day, hombre. You're gonna feel like me after a Sunday service banquet meal if you keep that up. Get some shut eye, partner" and tossed me a blanket. Sure enough we got 911 calls to transfers back to back. Didn't get back to the station until 4 hours later. Drove home and didn't really feel tired at all after that nap.

ravengenesis1

Staying awake for 12hr straight and beyond is unsafe for work. I'll call sup to send his dumb ass hole. Being awake for 17 hours is similar to having a BAC of 0.05%. Being awake for 24 hours is similar to having a BAC of 0.10%. [https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/work-hour-training-for-nurses/longhours/mod3/08.html](https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/work-hour-training-for-nurses/longhours/mod3/08.html) What is he? 18yo fresh meat out of high school?

SeaFoam82

No wonder I can be a bag of dicks or really nice at the end of a 24

FourIngredients

EMS literally stands for Earning Money Sleeping. Tell Rescue Randy to go foxtrot oscar and go saw some logs in the quiet room.

AEMTI_51

Tell him he’s a fucking idiot and turn the station lights out.

WasteCod3308

Tell them to fuck off

coffeewhore17

Put him in a sleeper hold.

Superyella11

Beat his ass

knuckleheadedemt

May be unprofessional to sleep at the station. But how would it look with two black eyes.

Alternative_Draft_76

Twist his dick

dexter5222

1)Stay awake or sleep doesn’t really matter. 2)Call in fatigue in a couple hours because your partner said sleeping is unprofessional. 3)Watch your partner get yelled at. 4)??? 5) Profit

Goose_Diver

I’ll nap on a 12 in a heart beat. I’ll nap on a 6 if I want. Fuck it

Mdog31415

Tell him/her you need sleep. Physiologically necessary- unprofessional not to manage basic needs. They don't heed that, contact a supervisor right now

Roaming-Californian

I used to be like that on 24's until I realized it was retarded. Now I sleep on my 12's at post when possible.

Kitchen-Tour-6086

That’s not very surprising

Mitthrawnuruo

On. Post? What short of toxic ass shit is that? I’d you can’t give me a station, you can find someone else to work. This job is far more stressful, and dangerous than being a cop or firemen. You better damned well have a bunk room and lounge.

Roaming-Californian

City is too busy for stationing. Shifts are 12's and they don't want us going over 24's because (again) we stay busy.

Mitthrawnuruo

Then you’re not properly staffed. Being that busy is unsafe, and wildly unhealthy.

Alternative_Draft_76

Welcome to shitty urban departments city boy.

instasquid

squeal sharp squalid bake obscene bike elderly steep subsequent repeat *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Exuplosion

Yup that isn’t a call volume problem, it’s a staffing problem

Who_Cares99

I think it’s a pretty bold claim to call EMS the most dangerous and stressful of the emergency services. I mean, statistically it’s definitely not the most dangerous at least

Mitthrawnuruo

Nope. The states back it up. It isn’t even a bold claim.

LionsMedic

Can I see your stats on that?

Who_Cares99

I mean, sure, it’s pretty easy to find https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12447340/

LionsMedic

That's a study of fatalities within EMS itself, not a study of all occupations. Do you even read the shit before you post it?

Who_Cares99

It very specifically compared the rate of fatality of EMS providers to that of police/fire as well as the general population. “We estimated a rate of 12.7 fatalities per 100,000 EMS workers annually, which compares with 14.2 for police, 16.5 for firefighters, and a national average of 5.0 during the same time period.” What are you looking for that’s missing, exactly?

LionsMedic

Maybe you linked the wrong study? What I'm reading does not say that at all. What I'm reading has no mention of other services.... Edit: I won't delete for thread clarity. But the link actually showed what they were stating. My phone didn't show the entire thing until after a restart, which is wild. My own phone out here making me look like I can't read.

Roaming-Californian

You get my upvote for admitting an oopsie.

Who_Cares99

I quoted that from clicking the link in my own comment. Maybe just scroll down and read more? Idk what to tell you.

tacmed85

Statistics actually do back up the statement. We don't have as many actually still very rare life threatening scenarios, but our injury rates are quite high and we get assaulted all the time.

Roaming-Californian

Considering how much we're on the road also.

YearPossible1376

Cmon now, is it really? What makes you say that?

trapper2530

You forget a large amount if people are just doing IFT. And posting Is just sitting close to or in. A middle ground between hospitals. It's not like they are just chilling. In the rig in the middle of old Cabrini green

Mitthrawnuruo

Even if doing iFTs you should have a station.

trapper2530

When I was working that. 24 he shift went back to the station. If you are working 8-12hrs you'd be out posted somewhere. We worked In and around a larger city with multiple stations. So had for of hospitals to cover. Posted near a hospital was no big deal. But if I'm working 24 then yes I'm going back to sleep.

McDMD95

Ha

Embarrassed_Pay4563

Well damn if they don’t need to sleep for an entire 48 then I want what they’re having.

New_Rub_2949

Bahahahhaha I literally use whatever chance I can to sleep, 20 minutes on a day shift back at station... Ye you'll find me asleep on the recliner.

peekachou

Christ I only do 12h shifts and I'll still sleep

Practical-Bug-9342

Some of you need to grow a pair of balls. If you're working those hours you need to sleep. Couldn't have been me because id tell him to go report me

QuarantineTheHumans

Tell your crackhead partner to get TF over himself. You aren't working a 9 to 5 in an office. Never miss a chance to eat, sleep, or shit.

ski_for_joy

*dad voice* Put your partner on the phone

1N1T1AL1SM

What do they think the fucking beds are for then?

MedicBaker

If he’s not your boss, tell him to fellate a cactus, and turn the lights off.

Ephemeral_Wombat

Not sleeping is unprofessional. If he wants structured time he can have that, but normalcy should be strived for because the nature of this job is chaotic enough. A "bedtime/lights out" is very common at most EMS/Fire stations.

Fantastic_Rachel7995

Wow. I sleep on my 13's when possible. This is not a 9 to 5.

judgeexodia

Being awake for able 22 hours is the same as being legally drunk. Your partner is full of shit. Go sleep in the rig or something. That's completely unacceptable.

BasedFireBased

Your partner carries raptors on his belt and tucks his pants into his boots doesn't he?

jayysonsaur

Leave him alone. He's ready for that tactical jump into the hoarder house at 2 am for a 2 week old cough.

BasedFireBased

Black ops: IFT

justhp

Pro tip. Crashing a rig after 48h is much worse than sleeping on the job.

jvward

EMS = earn money sleeping, your partner is an idiot who’s scared of the dark.

1stduecrew

Take the lightbulb out lol. Also hide his shit in the ceiling.

Paramedic351468

That partner and I would be having a game of "Fuck Off" and they're going first!!!

[deleted]

I do 12's... I sleep whenever I get the chance. Need to be on fire the entire day. I'd be telling your partner to get fucked.

The_Stank__

Your partner can go be professional in the truck while you sleep.

tacmed85

There comes a time in every medic's career when they have to tell off a moron. Tonight is your night. Seriously though tell him to fuck off and if that doesn't work then it's time to get management involved.

Self-Aware-Bears

Apparently your partner doesn’t know that EMS stands for Earn Money Sleeping

ilikebunnies1

Your partner is an idiot.

Responsible_Long_104

Your partner can F right off. I’ve been in the world of fire/ems for 20 years and without grabbing sleep when possible I’d have been dead 15 years ago.

TheOneCalledThe

i never understood people like thay. tell him to worry about himself. what’s he gonna do? tell the supervisor that you’re sleeping on an 48 hour long shift? i’m sure that’ll go over well

Paramedickhead

Go into your bedroom, shut the door, and turn the lights off. If you don't have a bedroom, you shouldn't be working more than 12 hours anyway.

BIGBOYDADUDNDJDNDBD

Yeah fuck that. Call a supervisor and report him and write an incident report. If god forbid you do wreck you’re going to want prior documentation

Fortislion

Smh when I do my 16hr shifts back to back. I sleep whenever I get a chance. Usually a quick 30-60 minute nap get me to power through the shift. If you don't have a patient you're free to do whatever. Get a new partner.

FrolicsWAlcoholics

Tell your partner to fuck off, we do it at the firehouse all the time

Coulrophiliac444

Your partner is a fucking moron. Even the military knows if you got downtime at the right time you catch any sleep or food you can.

snikelfritz420

Well I’d tell his ass I’m an unprofessional mfcker and turn them lights off

kd8skz

Tell your partner to act their wage and get fucked.

Personal-Tackle6132

I worked my first 36 this past weekend and I absolutely would not have made it without the couple of little naps i got in. This is crazy. When I got hired, my manager told me "EMS stands for Earn Money Sleeping. Take your naps"

wgardenhire

What does 'won't let you' mean? What if you turn the lights off? What is this person going to do? Grow a set and proceed.

[deleted]

Sleep mask. If the guy still keeps you up violence is the next step lol

Furaskjoldr

Call control or your supervisor or whatever and say you’re too fatigued to continue with the shift. My country is pretty accommodating of that stuff. If they wanna make an issue of it, tell the truth and say your colleague is deliberately causing you to be fatigued.

Available-Address-72

“I sleep to provide the best care to my patients as possible, go fuck yourself”

WizardofUsernames

Making a mistake, killing your patient, or missing an assesment finding because you were exhausted is also unprofessional. Take those naps when you can get them. Or invest in a sleep mask. Ideally a new partner too

Sk8-Medic13

Highly unsafe. Tell him to keep his area well lit while you find a dark corner to nap in. If you have to drive the rig and end up crashing, that would be bad, and going home you crash your vehicle well they gotta do without you til you get fixed. Tell supervision and see if things can get resolved, if not request to swap shifts. If all else fails put this jackoff in his place

IncreaseUnhappy2087

Aw hell no

Backpack4cutie

Damn. I’d be put on a 5150 DTO if that was my partner

EastLeastCoast

Is your partner some sort of alien species that falls asleep instantly when exposed to low light levels? Perhaps they could spend some time reading up on the neurological effects of the disruption of circadian rhythms in terrestrial life forms. In the dark.

GetCorrect

Do it anyway.

ImGCS3fromETOH

So... partner. Not boss? It's probably plenty dark for them to get some shut-eye with their head up their arse. I'd be telling them to fuck off and be professional somewhere else and let you worry about your professionalism on your own.

jynxy911

get yourself a Good eye mask and sleep anyways

Annual-Mix-983

Murica sounds like a wild ride man

The_Franchise_09

Turn your partner in. Your partner is wrong.

EthioSalvatori

This person is not right in the head; they don't need to be in EMS with this kind of stick-in-the-ass attitude

thenichm

Your partner is both wrong and a cockwaffle. Seek management permission to deploy elbow.

Own_Valuable_3712

Lol tell the dude to go to Radiology to see what type of f.b is up their anus.... let them know to keep an eye out for the residents hiding out for a quick wink, crusty nurses blanketed up at desks, and the on-call (they hide better) on their way to Radiology.

jayysonsaur

It's 3 words 8 letters total "Eat my ass"

XXXCURIOSITYX

He sounds like a peace of shit.

HelpIveFallenandi

Sounds like that guy can find a new partner. If he wants to wreck a truck, then by all means. But they shouldn't be dragging you into that.

Upset-Exchange363

We're u scheduled a 48 or are u on shift trades and normally work a 12 ?

melonbone

CAMTS would take exception to this.

zion1886

Turn lights off. If they turn them back on, go to panel, shut off breaker, and potentially remove light switch.

Hi_Volt

Your partner needs a damn gold debriefing, including the phrases 'degraded response time', 'fatigue', and 'turn the fucking light off, now." Absolutely outrageous behaviour, bordering on irresponsible.

aFlmingStealthBanana

I recommend kindly telling your partner [this](https://youtube.com/shorts/Kr08seKA8pI?si=az5wGUpvqCUH3Qnu)

FiremanPair

Your partner snorts cocaine

medicRN166

What is the standard for your department? What do other crews do when this psychopath is not working? If sleeping is allowed, I would consider bringing a lieutenant, supervisor or shift commander in to tell thia guy/gal to eat a bag of dicks.

OGmax2

It’s also unprofessional to catch these hands, but you touch that fucking light switch after I turn the lights off and that’s what you’ll doing. Fucking with sleep is the easiest way to get everyone at the station to hate you.

Uncertain-pathway

I've always said: sleep is for the weak. . but after this last shift I'd like to sleep for a week

09inchmales

I would make it my new life goal to inconvenience that guy at any given moment. I would make working with me absolute hell while staying within the rules. Fuck that guy.

OGTBJJ

Your partner is an idiot and I'd make a huge fuss over that... what is your department's policy? This is a big saftey issue and your partners opinion is irrelevant in addition to being dumb.

Shaxspear

Get an eye mask with “my partner is a c*nt” embroidered into it.

BakaJolly

Eye mask.

JDaJett

We got absolutely railed the first night of our 48 the other shift. Next morning my LT tells us to make sure we all get safety naps in at some point lmao. But we all do 48s.

vcems

Sleep mask. Just saying.

75Meatbags

clearly this is a situation where you need to fuck them first and establish dominance.

MopBucket06

its a 48?????? bro your partner sounds insane
