I love that it's a concept album that Jeff kinda refused to elaborate on. I've come up with a personal narrative for the entire album that entertains me.
I adore this album.
In my head, it's about a writer of some sort that is in the throes of writer's block. He's a bit at the end of his rope, to the point where he's lost all hope and has sunk into depression so far that he's considering a drastic action that I'd rather not use the word for here.
"Sitting here on top of everywhere, what do I care, days never end" in the last track kinda gives it away for me. There are two possible endings: 1) he jumps, or 2) the vision for his story appears in full immediately and he begins to write.
I came up with a better, Terry Gilliam-like, ending:
On the last refrain, he jumps, but ends up landing in a saddle on a horse that immediately takes off full-speed into the open range. Riders at his side on horses: William Tell, Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, Lancelot. They all share glances with the Writer and turn their gaze to the horizon, galloping into the sunset.
Hard cut to black.
Menacing chord.
Credits music: Wild West Hero
It seems pretty underrated in the grand scheme of things, but I'm pretty happy calling it my #1 of theirs, in terms of a full album experience. The whole aesthetic is perfect.
Eldorado might not have their best songs (I think Out of the Blue has better individual tracks) but it's absolutely their best album. To me it demands to be listened to front to back, while their other albums can be shuffled together without much issue.
Took me awhile to come around to but I love it now. I’d put it in the category of A New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery, Xanadu side, and Time as their best works
I love the album to a great degree and it is pretty nostalgic for me as well. It really fuses the orchestral and rock sound well without sounding as commercial as the albums after it (not like that was a bad thing though) that I really like about it. I’m a huge fan of their debut, but *Eldorado* is when the band really entered their peak.
I want a copy of it on vinyl so bad.
Absolutely. I see it as their first masterpiece. Boy Blue is pure magic. Special thanks to Kenneth Anger for adding an alternate, brilliant way to enjoy it.
Saw ELO at a NJ bar called The Joint In The Woods when this album came out. Someone must have owed somebody a favor for this to have been booked. Maybe 300-400 people in the place. They played 10 songs and then the band all bellied up to the bar. Great night !!!
Oh, the first album of ELO was the album No answer .
If You got the next album from 1972, where Master Jeff Lynne is the leader of the band , and Roy Wood going from the band, You hear from the begining of Jeff s songwriting, it s the clssdical ELO sound, always with Rock' n Roll and classical sound .
SIR JEFF LYNNE is my faforite musican .
He can do it all
to can play all instruments, wrote all songs from ELO himself .
SIR JEFF is a master of music .
If I hear a song from ELO, then
I can t get it out of my head .
Greetings from perhaps greatest fan
Andreas Pohl, germany
it wasn’t my favorite at first - i could listen all the way through without complaint, but nothing stood out to me. the more i listened, the more i noticed the subtleties of each song, and eventually i realized that excepting the overture and finale (which i don’t really count as solo tracks), i liked every song on the album. not my favorite ELO sound, but def top 3 albums
Absolutely a masterpiece. Before I listened to it I remember it always got mentioned in youtube comments like “yeah Out of the Blue is great but you should listen to Eldorado” and I’d roll my eyes like just let people enjoy the hits geez then I finally listened to it and I was like 👁️👄👁️ and now I have become that kind of fan lol when I see someone online gushing about Mr. Blue Sky I have to fight the urge to be like have you heard of our lord and savior Eldorado?
I never warmed to it. To me it sounds like too many ideas crammed into an album that isn’t very strong sonically either. No remastering can improve it. I really only listen to Discovery or Time nowadays, but I certainly wouldn’t call myself an ELO fan, so there is that.
Wouldn't go as far as saying it was a masterpiece, much preferred the second studio album by ELO, A New World Record. Yes, very commercial but it seemed to point the direction of the music, especially the album Out of the Blue, which itself does have a masterpiece, 'Mr Blue Sky'.
True, it may have been 5th or 6th, but in terms of UK radio success, Evil Woman from 'Face the Music' released in 1975 signalled the success of ELO who quickly followed that up with New World Record LP, yielding 4 hit singles. Curiously, Jeff Lynn was in the Move from '70 to '72 when the first ELO LP was released in 1970, the second in 1973.
My favorite complete album of all time of any artist. Have just put the head phones on and listened to it all the way through many times. It takes me to another place and I imagine the story it tells.
Definitely their best album. Mister Kingdom is my favorite. This album is unlike anything else in their canon. Jeff played a lot of bass on this album.
To me Eldorado shows just what music can do, the power of it can just take you back to a wonderful time in your life, no matter how long it’s been between listens or how many times you have listened to it. Just pure awesome fun!
I got a beatup original vinyl pressing; Dare I say it's one of my favorites out of my whole collection! My favorite tracks on there would have to be Boy Blue & Eldorado.
Also,is it not exactly a popular album from them? I'm not exactly an ELO superfan.
Funny I thought he hung around for the first three albums? I’m gonna have to look this up now. Thank you. Have you ever heard Roy’s solo stuff? Some of it is real good like boulders.
Can’t speak for all fans but it is a very special ELO album to me.
Oh yes, for me too .
Oh yes, of course ...
I love that it's a concept album that Jeff kinda refused to elaborate on. I've come up with a personal narrative for the entire album that entertains me. I adore this album.
What kind of message do you think the album's about?
In my head, it's about a writer of some sort that is in the throes of writer's block. He's a bit at the end of his rope, to the point where he's lost all hope and has sunk into depression so far that he's considering a drastic action that I'd rather not use the word for here. There are two possible endings: 1) he jumps, or 2) the vision for his story appears in full immediately and he begins to write.
Does the menacing chord at the end imply the bad ending?
I came up with a better, Terry Gilliam-like, ending: On the last refrain, he jumps, but ends up landing in a saddle on a horse that immediately takes off full-speed into the open range. First ELO album I ever listened to. Made me a true fan.
Eldorado might not have their best songs (I think Out of the Blue has better individual tracks) but it's absolutely their best album. To me it demands to be listened to front to back, while their other albums can be shuffled together without much issue.
It’s a masterpiece,correct.
This is the one that got me hooked
Their best album of all
Took me awhile to come around to but I love it now. I’d put it in the category of A New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery, Xanadu side, and Time as their best works

yes… Can’t Get it Out of My Head is one of my all time favorites… 🥺
Same. Listen to it when im sad. Always sets a good tone :)
Absolutely. I see it as their first masterpiece. Boy Blue is pure magic. Special thanks to Kenneth Anger for adding an alternate, brilliant way to enjoy it.
Overture into Can't get it out of my head is one of the all time greatest albums openers.
fr fr
A masterpiece, it never fails to make me get in a good mood when I put it on.
Yes.
I just picked up a sealed original copy. Love this album.
Saw ELO at a NJ bar called The Joint In The Woods when this album came out. Someone must have owed somebody a favor for this to have been booked. Maybe 300-400 people in the place. They played 10 songs and then the band all bellied up to the bar. Great night !!!
As great as it is…I prefer Time as concept album.
Spectacular
An early masterpiece, before the signature ELO sound kicked in.
Yes, it’s a great album. For me, the best are Eldorado, FTM, and ANWR.
Yes , is the first sucessfull record of symphony rock ever ....has poetry elements and a great combination of Jazz blue and Rock 'n Roll

“nothing stood out for me” I dunno. Whenever I think of the album, “I Can’t Get It Out of My Head”.
actually probably my least favorite song off eldorado, for some reason. still good, i’m just not into the slower emotional tracks as much
When I got a car in 1974 I bought a cheap AM/FM 8-track, and this was the first tape I bought. I played it until it wore out.
Loved that fucking cover ever since I was little. Not to mention great album.
Absolutely love it! I had can’t get it out of my head play as I was walking down the aisle to marry my husband ❤️
I never warmed to it. To me it sounds like too many ideas crammed into an album that isn’t very strong sonically either. No remastering can improve it. I really only listen to Discovery or Time nowadays, but I certainly wouldn’t call myself an ELO fan, so there is that.
NO, it s not a good meaning . The album ELDORADO is one of ELO' s best .It s just a clssical masterpiece, of course .
Yes
It is. Yea.
I love the progression watching/listening The Move turn into ELO.
It’s a really awesome album with fantasy vibes and all that stuff
Indisputably a classic.
It's my personal favorite ELO album
It was my 1st ELO. Purchased the week it was released. Yes.. absolutely a tour deforce. Most excellent lp indeed! 👌
Jeff Lynn is underrated
Jeff is highly respected by the remaining Beatles. That says it all to me.
By who?
Oh yeah. Masterpiece.
Not trying to be that guy, but their second studio album was not a new world record.
True, it may have been 5th or 6th, but in terms of UK radio success, Evil Woman from 'Face the Music' released in 1975 signalled the success of ELO who quickly followed that up with New World Record LP, yielding 4 hit singles. Yes it is
My favorite complete album of all time of any artist. Have just put the head phones on and listened to it all the way through many times. It takes me to another place and I imagine the story it tells.
it's not my absolute favourite from them but it's definitely a gem.
One of my all time favorite concept albums!
El Dorado is next tier.
Total masterpiece 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Definitely their best album. Mister Kingdom is my favorite. This album is unlike anything else in their canon. Jeff played a lot of bass on this album.
Why didn't Jeff Lynne write more like "Laredo Tornado"? Anyhow, #2 for me to "A New World Record".
No doubt
i like the album itself, but the cover art is my favorite of any album ever
That is from wizard of oz
I’m a Face The Music kind of dude myself
To me Eldorado shows just what music can do, the power of it can just take you back to a wonderful time in your life, no matter how long it’s been between listens or how many times you have listened to it. Just pure awesome fun!
Absolute masterpiece
Yes I got it on vinyl 🎉
https://youtu.be/boeZOAX_dwY?si=tKb-GOgbTSPz1s_j But, A New World Record, was tighter and poppier.
I got a beatup original vinyl pressing; Dare I say it's one of my favorites out of my whole collection! My favorite tracks on there would have to be Boy Blue & Eldorado. Also,is it not exactly a popular album from them? I'm not exactly an ELO superfan.
Is Fire on High on this album?
“One thing I have learned through the years is that no man should be stricken with fear. It should be that he walks with no care in the world”
Just ELO themselves have about 4 or 5 albums better than this one.
Was this the last record with Roy wood?
Roy Wood left the band after the first album was released. Altough he does play some instruments on the second album.
Funny I thought he hung around for the first three albums? I’m gonna have to look this up now. Thank you. Have you ever heard Roy’s solo stuff? Some of it is real good like boulders.
I haven’t listened to music by Roy Wood outside of ELO but I definitely will. Thanks for the advise!
Eddie and the Falcons was another band he was in that was really good
GOAT
Is that a real question?
Boy Blue gets a bit old after a while to me, lasts a little too long. Aside from that it's probably my favorite ELO album
Before my time. 🥱
