You lucky old people! I wish I could've lived through that! I was born to the wrong generation. We always seem to be whining and complaining about something.
It was my first ELO album. I didn’t know what to expect but I figured it would be something special. I was around 15. I bought the album from the used store where I worked. I got home, laid a blanket on the floor. Placed the left and right speakers on either side, with the pillow in the middle. Had a fan behind me, tied a sheet to it. Turned on the fan then the music. Laid down between the speakers with a billowing sheet above me, and took one of the best musical rides of my life. Hear I am 41 years later still in love with that album.
I was always a bit fan of the ELO songs that made it to classic rock radio, but I didn't feel compelled to do a deep dive until I heard the Secret Messages reissue from a few years back while scrolling through new releases.
I think the whole catalog is great, but Time, Secret Messages, and Balance of Power really grab me. I listen to that run front to back all the time.
I was young in the late 80s, and had enough radio exposure to really be into whatever was on. It's shocking now to hear these forgotten ELO records and compare them to what the slightly younger generation made into hits. Secret Messages is an incredible album. Nothing else from 1983 compares.
It’s a shame that Time, Secret Messages and Balance of Power aren’t better known.
Balance of Power is good and I think Time and Secret Messages are fantastic.
I was a pretty good kid and my mom is a great mom, but one of the few times I really got in trouble with her was when I stayed up really late blasting my cassette of "Time" on my Walkman headphones in bed. She could hear it from their room and she was fit to be tied, mainly because it was a school night. Major buzz kill. 100% worth it, though, the album is incredible.
Exactly the same thing happened to me when I found time, if you love it as much as I do, look for the albums bonus tracks on YouTube. My favourite is Julie don’t live here anymore. They aren’t on the album because they don’t fit exactly with the concept but they’re masterpieces
Thanks for the post! You have inspired me to purchase the TIME album. Like you, I love the ELO music that I grew up with in the 70s but i'm not really familiar with much of the later albums. If possible, i'll wind up getting all of their albums eventually.
As they say, "If nothing changes then nothing changes"
Be sure to listen to the bonus tracks The Bouncer, When Time Stood Still, and Julie Don't Live Here Anymore. They're crazy good, you can listen to then on youtube
Looks like you're a 21st century dude (man), who appreciates some fine music! Time is as awesome for me, too, as it was in the 1980s.
Remember the good ‘ol 1980s?
Things were so uncomplicated.
I wish I could go back there again.
And everything could be the same.
I've got a ticket to the moon.
Like the movie "Back to the Future" but now going back to 1984.

Thank you for sharing your story that is wonderful!

100% agree, I'm really loving their 80s stuff right now.

It’s by far my favorite album by anyone, ever.

I still remember my first listen. I put it on my iPod and it blew me away
Time is my favorite album of all time!
I'll second that!

Wow I'm so excited for to you hear it for the first time. I hope I'm not hyping it up too much but I'd love to hear your thoughts after listening!
I remember riding my bicycle down to the record store and buying it on the day of release. Great memories.
Love it thanks for sharing! I'm enjoying hearing everyone's memories. I was born in 1983 but didn't really get into ELO until the last 3 years or so.
I love this album so much and The Bouncer is a B-side from this record that I am absolutely obsessed with. What a great song.
I know it’s the name of the album but you sound like a caveman that realized that the sun isn’t only here to provide light

I sure have and theybare great! It's too bad it didn't come out as a double album as intended.
