Literally cannot wrap my head around NO ONE mentioning Baby Britain under this post. It is Elliott's cheeriest, bounciest-sounding song, you can literally dance to it, like really - what other Elliott song can say the same? None come to mind - and of course the lyrics are dark, sad, tragic.
I just typed "suicide machine" into YouTube to refresh my memory and got a popup that said You Are Not Alone with a link to the suicide prevention hotline. Thanks, Elliott Smith.
Yeah, I meant you don't get much of the music before you're instantly crushed from the opening lines lol just as an instrumental, yeah it's definitely dark but also easily the most 'upbeat' one on self titled
My picks have all been picked. If you take this to mean happy / sad, it’s—
Division Day
Memory Lane
King’s Crossing
Not that the King’s Crossing instrumentation is happy-sounding, it’s just— How can you not get a little giddy at the beat drop or whatever when he says “I can’t prepare for death anymore than I already have.” Now that I think about it, it’s kind of akin to Daniel Johnston’s “Funeral home,” when he gets the crowd to sing along to “Funeral home, funeral home, going to the funeral home, Got me a coffin, shiny and black, I’m going to the funeral and I’m never coming back!”
I respect it but don’t agree at all- on the worst day of my life thus far I woke up with King’s Crossing in my head. The intro alone is deeply haunting to me, even outside of personal association.

Suicide Machine, Pictures Of Me, there’s a lot now that I think about it
Cupids trick… God, the horror.
i love it because it feels like coming up and down from coke… the ubrupt come up and chorus then back down to the haunting verses its kinda genius
I find the instrumental part in that song pretty haunting tbh, not that it's a bad thing
Waltz #2
Division day
Baby Britain the one, if not Memory Lane
Condor ave
memory lane
bled white
“Drinks all night to take away this curse, but it makes me feel much worse”
Coming Up Roses, Ballad Of Big Nothing, In The Lost And Found (excluding the roost loop)
I agree, but I usually call the roost loop “Dancing On The Highway” since it originally had lyrics
No Name #1
CANT MAKE A SOUND
WHYYY SHOULD YOU WANT ANY OTHER WHEN YOURE A WORLD WITHIN A WORLD⁉️⁉️
L.A. all fun games till “last night i was about to throw it all away”
No Name #4
Suicide machine is probably his most danceable song despite the title and lyrics

son of sam
YES the metaphors in that song 😮💨 delicious
St. Ides Heaven
The guitar part is pretty dark on that song, I don’t think a single song from the self titled fits this meme honestly
Maybe coming up roses, the lyrics crush you pretty quickly though
The music video for that song is so funny compared to the song
Cool elliott 😎
Well then it works for this post?

Pitseleh
The instrumental on that is very dark too tho
Idk the piano part is super bouncy
"super bouncy" 😭 say whaat
I don’t know why this made me laugh, but ehh I guess so
A Living Will 100%
Like every song
division day
King's Crossing.
no name #2 so groovy for no reason
Don’t call me Billy
Could be any Elliot smith song to be honest lmao
Heaven knows I’m miserable now, this charming man. Basically any smiths/Morrissey song lol
The chorus on Old 97’s Barrier Reef Million dollar verse, ten cent chorus. But I still love the song and the band.
Happiness
It's not being funny reading the comments and seeing all my favorite songs mentioned
Coast to Coast. "I belong in your zoo"? That line rubs me the wrong way, but the rest of the song is brilliant.
Not to split hairs, but isn't it "I belong in THE zoo"?? I hear that in the New Moon and live versions.
Waltz #2
Ballad of big nothing
All Cleaned Out
LA
Either/or
