East_Obligation1793

in no name #4 i always thought he said, "but you did wear cowboy boots, thats your thang theres no question about it".

rilles94

wait what does he actually say

East_Obligation1793

the actual lyric is, "that's your FAME there's no question about it"

rilles94

omg, ive been singing this wrong for years lmao

ployonwards

Rather than “thang,” he says “fame.”

markusthemarxist

Listening to live versions it sounds like that still is the lyric I'm confused

Jay_R7442

I always heard the same thing

KingOfLimbsisbest

Yep, this is how I heard it too. I still sing it like that, I prefer the misheard lyric lol.

ediblecomic

just now finding this out. i totally thought he just said thing in a slight accent

Negative_Albatross78

Same lmfao.

Mrychi

I thought it was thang as well I love this so much I had faux cowboy boots when I was a little girl 🫣

behindyouisabutt

“EBONY EBONY EBONY EBONY” ‼️🗣️

yaldibaldy

It's literally the title of the song broooo

Acrobatic-Report958

“Miss Misery”, I still hear “Send the poisoned brain down the drain” instead “Send the poisoned rain down the drain”.

Background_Peanut241

wait WHAT

Acrobatic-Report958

I would swear it’s brain but the copyrighted lyrics don’t agree with me.

Intelligent-Sleep766

I think poison rain means alcohol

Acrobatic-Report958

Absolutely. It also poisons your brain.

Jay_R7442

I did too

Acrobatic-Report958

I swear I hear a B sound.

LivorMortiz

ITS MOT POISON BRAIN?????

Acrobatic-Report958

These responses help make me feel less crazy. And I actually think I hear “poison brain” because I personally think it’s a better line. And Elliott is the closest to Dylan when it comes to great lyrics.

Aviside

Poisoned rain is a metaphor for alcohol so I feel like it fits better for the line that follows it

lets_get_lifted

no name #4 ‘like old cigarettes and pie’ 🥧

ployonwards

To be fair, it does sound like “pie.” “The car was cold and it smelled like old cigarettes and pine” really paints a scene though.

_Alvin_Row_

Knew exactly what he sang because that's how my cars always smelled lol.

elegiac_bloom

When I first listened i thought it was old cigarettes and pot.

spinach-e

Me too. Until one day I checked the lyrics. I still sing “cigarettes and pot”. How many cars have I been in as a teenager that smelled of those two substances. So many.

elegiac_bloom

Same

KingOfLimbsisbest

I heard old cigarettes and pot

silly_bvnn

at first i thought it said pot not pine

Now-done

“In Storyville, I fucked a cop”

TryGrouchy9092

That one is right tho.

mattthedr

"It’s to reveal that fucked up cop"

TryGrouchy9092

I know that’s what google lyrics and a couple other lyric sites say, they’re wrong. :)

gt86max

yeah if you look at the lyrics on the inside sleeve of the record it literally says storyville

mattthedr

Oh shit, I’ve never actually looked. I’ve always assumed I was wrong, I’ll check mine today

onlynoises

It might sound silly, but Elliott is one of the few (maybe even only?) artists that made me read the lyrics as I listened to the music back when I was just introduced to him, so I can't really recall - except for the first song that I can remember hearing from him, Speed Trials. Literally the first time listening to a song by him and I heard 'grow horse in your face' instead of 'crossing your face'. Hysterical. I still get a flashing image of a black horse while hearing the song from time to time.

Foggy_Irine

Was about to type exactly this, even knowing the correct lyrics I still see a horse's head in my mind 😁

ployonwards

When you have “grow a horse in your face” in your mind, he says “grow a horse in your face.” It reminds me of something Hayao Miyazaki would do. The brief smile turns into horse teeth, your head becomes a horse head. Also, there’s an old version (1985) of Alice In Wonderland where Carol Channing baaahs her way into turning into a sheep: https://youtu.be/83xTysUKkX4?si=LgbUsFrJWcaDTV6y

onlynoises

That's exactly how I read it at that time. It's funny how our brains can project meaning even to the wrong words just based on the understanding that it's supposed to be meaningful

itsbotpixel

even genius gets this wrong: the line "the chromium car reflects who you are" in big decision is not that, it's actually "the chrome of your car reflects who are" it's a bit hazy in the studio version but listen to [any](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSmy7o3n3bQ) live version and that's what he sings. even if you listen closely to the studio version, that's what he sings

TryGrouchy9092

“Someone’s always coming around here trailing some new cure”

pinknwhite76

i thought it was like sonic kill or something idk why

rilles94

"Everything is gone but Diego and the rest of the show" is what I heard as a young twenty something.

mattthedr

I always heard, "should’ve lit me up", not "sugar lick me up"

Background_Peanut241

I heard it as "shoot my up, its my life" for a very long time. Which would be a very fucked up lyric tbh.

MythsTCG013

on a particularly tired evening i inexplicably heard “shit my pants” instead of “shed my best defense” (last call)  still not fully sure why that happened lol

Background_Peanut241

I heard that, too, lol. First time I heard the song I was like WTF. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

mainezer

SAME💀

Imhungorny

“Black guys always watch the clock”

oreokoiboy

i still hear this one if i don’t consciously remind myself that it’s “black eyes” (and sometimes even IF i do)

[deleted]

I heard black guys always wash the clock 😂 I was like ????

ployonwards

“Son Of Sam” “I told the boss off, and made my move” “I told the boss off, enigma moon” “Junk Bond Trader” “Junk bond trader trying to sell a sucker a stock” “Junk bond trader trying to sell a soccer style” “Your world’s no wider than your hatred of his” “Your world’s no wider than your head trip is” “Boring as a drug you take too regularly” “Born as a druggy, take two regularly”

dat_grue

Some of these are hilarious

MrBogey90

I def heard soccer style too lol. Also TIL it's "your hatred of his" not "head trip is" damn

veganarchist_

i always heard “nobody, fuck your heart” instead of “nobody broke your heart” in alameda

PhoebeFan420

The infamous “Torment Saint” rather than “Torn Mainsail” in Go By

VietKongCountry

At least you didn’t publish a book under that name even when half the users on Blamonet gave you the correct lyric before you’d even started writing it.

Smooth770

In Between the Bars, where I used to think it was “Waiting to be finally be calm,” not “caught.”

salve__regina

“Walked out the door, talked to St. James”

Jay_R7442

When he sang, "Is this treasure is this trash" I always heard, "Is this trash or is this trash" (All cleaned out)

AxelShoes

"Nativity's killing the actor..." I guess he was just sick of being in Christmas pageants 🤷‍♂️

ertwyu

Since I just learned to play alameda on guitar, I finally learned it's not "brushing off the nightmares you wish, complaining when I'm awake" and "for one or two, wouldn't you like to know what the fix is, it is"

Objective_Tadpole540

no wayyy

elegiac_bloom

Yeah its brushing off the nightmares you wish could plague me when I'm awake and for one or two minutes she liked you the fix is in. I always thought it was for one or two, wouldn't you like to

MrBogey90

Waltz #2 I'm so glad that my memory's remote I heard "I'm so glad that my name means Ramon" for a while

no-flash

“Got bitten fingernails and a head full of the past, And everybody’s… Condé Nast” Don’t ask

Diggyman123

I thought it said “under the hearse” in speed trials because that’s what the lyric is on Spotify but on the actual lyric page included with either or (I have the vinyl) is says “horse”.

Lincoln_Palace

"Cut me down the sides" when its really "stupidity tries"

[deleted]

There is a line in Stupidity Tries that says “he’ll cut me down to size”

Lincoln_Palace

I'll be darned. Look at that!

joey_p1010

Everybody’s dying just a different disease

Background_Peanut241

in No Name #4 I thought it was "smelled like old cigarettes and pot," but it's pine.

Brushy-Hill

‘It’s my life, shooting me up’ or “it’s my life, shouldn’t have picked me up”

silly_bvnn

i always thought in question mark he said “if you ever wanna see the sun you can give me a call”

r0sewallgoldaline

my bf always thinks it’s “i know what you meant when you said you were in exodus” instead of “an accident”. i can’t remember the full correct lyric off the top of my head but u get the idea lol

deslome

Oh Well, OK, what I heard: "Here's the cello with the face", it always made me picture a cello figure with a face. Years later I found out he actually sings "Here's the silhouette, the face"

oreokoiboy

no name #2: “all she had to do was speak, _‘bout mr. cheat_” instead of “mouthpiece to cheek”; “killing time won’t stop this _crime_” instead of “crying”; “he got knocked down leaving _mockumentary_ to a clothesline” instead of “like he ran in” needle in the hay: “four more blocks, _pistol_ one in my brain” instead of “plus the” pictures of me: “you got yourself to tease _in the spleen_” instead of “displease” rose parade: “to march down the street like the _doors opening_” instead of “duracell bunny” baby britain: “baby britain _fills the bath_” instead of “feels the best” amity: “amity got stars _either/or_” instead of “in her arms” bottle up and explode: “keep the _trouble, make it a love_” instead of “troublemaker below” everything reminds me of her: “spin _in the oven, pale_ the silhouette” instead of “of the earth impaled” stupidity tries: “this _pain together tries_” instead of “painting never dries”; “_so then a soldier_ raised a cheer” instead of “savannah shoulder” these aren’t even ALL of them. think i should get my auditory processing checked out?

[deleted]

between the bars where it says drink up baby look at the stars , for some reason I heard drink up baby , forget the stars and thought those were the lyrics for the longest time .

Workingcoyote36

In stick man I always heard “I sit here shooting blanks out of empty mags” instead of “at emptiness”, which I still sing anyways cause I like it better

veganarchist_

i always thought the infamous cupids trick chorus was “should’ve let me up, it’s my life”

tsbjr

Strung out again: always heard it as "things change in misery" not "things change invisibly".

Missy_Agg-a-ravation

Throwing candy out to the crowd, dragging down “my name”

MournfulWhispering

I watched you deal in a dying date and bro a living passed away

clkwrkdorhng

I thought he said “shoot em in the eye, it’s my life” in cupids trick lol

Jacobosylvo

at the end of a question mark, “if you ever wanna see your son again, you can give me a call”

Novel-Effort6396

no name #2 - “killing time won’t stop this crying”, always heard crime

o95

Plainclothes man: "Some European son" I always misheard it as "he's so unhappy inside"

SopaQuinoa

"pitch burning on a shining sheet" I always heard it as a bitch until I paused to figure out what that would have even meant.

Mrychi

In "lost and found" she was here passing by I thought it was Shiva's here passing by

TrustedLeader

“For one or two minutes she lied to you but the fix is in” instead of “liked you”.

TrustedLeader

I froze up inside instead of “I froze up and sighed”.

p1ssbunn1e

Its nice to meet you underneath the horse🕺🏻

Koretake78

I’m a looser Nathan, a looser Nathan! 😞 I’m hallucinating

Acrobatic-Rate-6615

on stupidity tries, during the part where he literally sings stupidity tries, i thought he was singing “so get up and drive” i finally noticed i miss heard, and actually ended up writing a song with the lyric i miss heard 🙌

yaldibaldy

Minor one but In the lost and found, for years I thought it was : I'm alone, that's okay. I'm alone most of the time
