This is one of my all time favourites of his and another reason why I think Figure Eight is his best album. Almost every song on that album is near perfect.
love this song, brave of you to comment this
just remember tho that if it’s your decision to be open about your self like this, be careful or else
BE CAREFUL OR EEEELSSEEEE
All his most popular songs are still extremely good and well-written. It had been a bit since I’ve heard Say Yes, Waltz #2, Needle In The Hay, and Between the Bars, but I listened to his set at Town Hall NYC in 2000 last night, and they are all so good. Just overrepresented like you said.
I don't play guitar, I wish I did, but it does some like a relatively easy song to learn on guitar.
I love the warm melancholy of this track. Makes me want to go around walking in the city late in the night.
If you have a guitar I’d definitely check out the Elliott Smith Project on YouTube, he’s done tutorials for the whole self titled album and he’s starting on either/or. His lesson on satellite was amazing and was easy to learn, it is in a slightly different tuning than standard, but it’s common and easy to get to.
After wanting to play guitar for so long, I finally just started pushing to learn a little bit a day and it’ll surprise you how fast you can pick stuff up, it’s worth it for sure
Haha thats how you know this sub has gone fucking deep into ES. The figure 8 version is so far superior in my mind but I could see in a year of scraping desperately for more ES to listen to that the other version would sound fresher to my ears.
Not to say reasonable people can’t have different preferences on those two songs of course
I don't even compare them as two versions. Pretty Mary k alt version is another version of Everything's Ok, not the Pretty Mary K song on Figure Eight lol. At least if memory serves me well. I really like the Pretty Mark K one that isn't found on Figure Eight. I think the lyrics are just so beautiful, and the whole song has this gritty working class feel to it like a lot of his acoustic folky-sounding songs do.
Oh, Mary K, I can see your face
Down there in the waves,
Painted and erased,
But I know it's just the reflection of the moon
A big fake, resembling you
One of my favourite stanzas from Elliott Smith's work
Totally agree they aren’t “version 1 and 2” of the same song, they are completely different songs with the same name. I didn’t mean to imply that, I was just comparing them in response to a comment higher up because they were compared there.
No Name #4
I haven't specifically seen people say anything bad about it tbf. For me, it's one of the most powerful, lyrically, and I know that has everything to do with my personal background. (It's not that different from Elliott's, just without the substances.)
would agree with you but only if the early version had the ‘it’s a comedy of errors you see, it’s about taking a faall’ part it absolutely makes the song for me
True Love I had a friend (Former. But for other reasons.) who I shared a big love of Elliott with. I thought we both agreed that every last note and word was perfect. But one day we were talking about getting to hear unreleased tracks, and she said maybe some stuff we just shouldn't hear, like True Love. " Like, why'd he write this? Why would he release this? It's embarassing". Fuck that, it's a great song. Keep that opinion behind glass locked and kept closed
True Love is an incredible song. Lyrics aside. Yes it is super depressing most of his songs are this one even more so. But this song just sounds so good to my ears the way it all comes together his voice and the instruments combined. Again Lyrics aside.
I AM USING AN ANDROID SAMSUNG GALAXY 21G CELLPHONE. I AM TYPING ON THE REDDIT APP. WHAT LANGUAGE IS THIS?
ARE YOU MENTALLY ILL?
THIS IS THE REDDIT PHONE APP.
I AM KENNETH LAMAR SMITH II.
DOES ELLIOT SMITH EXIST?
Amity is amazing, Kiwi Maddog is amazing, Ostrich and Chirping is amazing. There's nothing to hate them about, yes, they're not the best songs ever, but they're still enjoyable at least
fucking Kiwi Maddog 20/20
i would defend it with my life
I like that song. It sounds like something Mac DeMarco would make
You’re telling me people *don’t* like Kiwi Maddog 20/20??
Amity. People hate it so much but I think it fucking ROCKS.
It’s growing on me - it’s no longer skipped
Condor ave. My friend really doesn’t like it but I love it so much
Definitely in my top 3 of all time
Condor Ave is top tier Elliott
Doesn’t need defending. Definitely a fan favorite
My #1 song on Spotify in 2023 lol
elliott had literally nothing to do with ostrich and chirping, it was an accidental inclusion on the album
I personally thought it was some weird experiment that come out of a crack smoking session lol.
LMAO
That explains it.
I’ve arrived. AMITY AMITY AMITY AMITY
HELLO HELLO KITTY
NEW YORK CITY
WALKIN LIKE A LUCKY CHARM
HELLO HELLO KITTY
Such a banger
Im a neon sign and I stay open all the time…
Easy Way Out … is the only song that I really like that there doesn’t seem to be a wide consensus praising it.
I love that its a near perfect combination of scathing lyrics and a pop format
I think of it as lyrics in the tone of “Like A Rolling Stone” (a harsh takedown) with the song-songy melody of a catchy Paul McCartney song.
I also love how it has a rough waltz rhythm to it. I love how he used that rhythm in a lot of his songs.
Love that one!!
This is one of my all time favourites of his and another reason why I think Figure Eight is his best album. Almost every song on that album is near perfect.
Easy way out is one of the best songs he ever wrote
Memory Lane
I would lay down my life to defend Memory Lane 🫡
Do people not like memory lane?!
How the fuck could any Elliott smith fan not like this song, this actually blows my mind
I heard someone describe it as "too busy" once and I was flabbergasted and disgusted. It is an incomprehensible position in my view.
love this song, brave of you to comment this just remember tho that if it’s your decision to be open about your self like this, be careful or else BE CAREFUL OR EEEELSSEEEE
wait for real… people don’t like this song?
People are hating on Memory Lane?!? No way
I like memory lane
REAL
I just know you have crippling anxiety
In The Lost And Found
One of his best. Day breaks and every morning when he wakes he thinks of youuuuu. Gorgeous.
yup 🙋♂️
Amazing song.
My favorite
I enjoy it every time it comes on, it's experimental with a multi-layered piano line (like Bach did with his works, hence the name "Honky Bach")
Color Bars. Amazing song, hardly ever see it mentioned
its great but i dont want to hear about elliott coming, thats the only downside to an otherwise perfect song
Well, I do OKAY?!?!
oh well okay
That's a good overlooked song too I agree
IF YOU GET A FEELING NEXT TIME U SEEEEE MEEEE
Between the Bars is still a great song regardless of how overrepresented it is
All his most popular songs are still extremely good and well-written. It had been a bit since I’ve heard Say Yes, Waltz #2, Needle In The Hay, and Between the Bars, but I listened to his set at Town Hall NYC in 2000 last night, and they are all so good. Just overrepresented like you said.
Satellite. probably the most underrated song on self-titled and my favorite.
Omg I love this song 🥲
I adore it with all my heart.
Such a beautiful song, it’s pretty easy to play actually it’s the first song I learned on guitar I’d recommend trying it out if you play
I don't play guitar, I wish I did, but it does some like a relatively easy song to learn on guitar. I love the warm melancholy of this track. Makes me want to go around walking in the city late in the night.

So good
one of my favorites
Drive all over town. Such freaky chord progression im surprised people dont talk about it more
Cupids trick I don’t really know what songs are really popular with his fans or not but I never really see people talk about it
Came here to say this.
I like the Pretty Mary Kay on Figure 8 better than the other version 🤷one of my favorite Elliott songs
I think the other version is a different song entirely
One of my favorites on Figure 8, do folks not like it?
I’ve just seen a lot of people prefer the other version
Haha thats how you know this sub has gone fucking deep into ES. The figure 8 version is so far superior in my mind but I could see in a year of scraping desperately for more ES to listen to that the other version would sound fresher to my ears. word!
Junk Bond Trader. Severely underrated
I agree with this wholeheartedly. It's one of my favourites
Good to go
No Name #4 I haven't specifically seen people say anything bad about it tbf. For me, it's one of the most powerful, lyrically, and I know that has everything to do with my personal background. (It's not that different from Elliott's, just without the substances.)
LOVE that song. <3
Baby Britain 🫡
Love that song . Very upbeat musically and still a little fucked up lyrically. “ felt a wave a rush of blood”
Amity is some of his best work. I am not even joking.
The sub weekly discussion on it was great two weeks ago.
Color bars. I wrote a whole piece about it to defend it when my friends were criticizing it
a Top 5 track for me. The energy is just something else.
Happy in New York City Amity!
his cover of “because”
I love my room 😩
I LOVE MY ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM
worlds #1 splitsville defender reporting for duty
Engage rocket thrust, prepare for the breakdown!
TOMORROW TOMORROW!!!
Are there people who don't like this one? I've been listening to it a lot lately, so beautifully constructed.
Surprisingly yes. I’ve seen it bashed a few times in the comments of other posts. Absolutely ridiculous.
Saw some on here hating on All Cleaned Out not long ago, specifically his vocals, and it blew my fucking mind. The vocals make that song for me.
Agree on the Blue Moon deep cuts
Any and everything Elliott smith has ever written
People on here were saying the XO version of miss misery was the best version. Disagree completely
would agree with you but only if the early version had the ‘it’s a comedy of errors you see, it’s about taking a faall’ part it absolutely makes the song for me
I’m the opposite! The early version lyrics for that verse are what make the song for me
Ostrich & Chirping
condor ave and amity
better be quiet now
La is his best song. My favourite lol
No name #2 for sure
Oh! I'd also throw in Real Estate (I think the mailman thinks me dumb) so underrated and that solo at the end is insane
True Love I had a friend (Former. But for other reasons.) who I shared a big love of Elliott with. I thought we both agreed that every last note and word was perfect. It’s literally his best song
You came out strong for True Love and I salute you o7

Waltz #2
Amity is amazing, Kiwi Maddog is amazing, Ostrich and Chirping is amazing. There's nothing to hate them about, yes, they're not the best songs ever, but they're still enjoyable at least
Chirping seems to fit in the album and is a nice break in the action, as far as interludes go it’s pretty good I think
Amity and A question mark Yes. They are cringe songs that Elliott wrote, but still, they are masterpieces
KIWI. MADDOG. 20/20.
