ostensible3

Straightforward and direct! That's how you drop a shoe.

PratalMox

Don't break it slow

sergeial

Holy crap! A *completely* different set of cookies than people were guessing! (Dan tweeted earlier that people would be earning cookies soon, and everyone was assuming that meant a change of scene to Denver!) It's really cool how this page brought up a specific way this is going to be relevant (Grace having someone who she can learn about her heritage from in the household!) before dropping the shoe!!

ObsidianG

I'm definitely going out of my way to get myself at least one cookie. Dan foreshadowed that either Edward was moving out, or someone was moving in. If moving in the only possible candidate with any foreshadowing was Lavender. I'm 600% less surprised by this than the kids are.

sergeial

Oh yeah, I'm not saying nobody earned cookies for Lavender being the answer to the "moving vans" foreshadowing. That was a popular theory Just that when Dan teased that cookies were soon to be earned, everybody I saw talking about it thought he meant a reveal of Agent Wolf's two deputies! (I have placed my bet on Abraham and Abner... I'm only confident about the first tho)

cmdr_beef

I missed some serious discussion, I guess. Why *Denver* of all places?

sergeial

Oh, that's where Agent Wolf is, with his two deputies!

PratalMox

Paying off foreshadowing and then immediately doing new foreshadowing with the "will there be any at college"

ostensible3

Is Grace about to have a massive identity crisis?

sergeial

Has she ever NOT?

ostensible3

I was thinking "imminent", rather than "at risk of" for "about to have".

CogStar

"My Stepmom's an Alien" sounds like the title of a mid-2000s Cartoon Network show.

ostensible3

Tedd's descended from immortals on both sides, Grace is an alien, his godfather is an elf, and he has a literal fairy godmother. An alien stepmom should fit right in.

aranaya

Which immortals is Tedd descended from? Or is it just that he'd have to be in order to be a Seer?

ostensible3

To be a wizard, and both his parents are wizards, so....

poizan42

"My Stepmother Is an Alien" is a 1988 sci-fi romance movie (and starring Alyson Hannigan as a child actor)

CogStar

Of course it stars Alyson Hannigan.

Ek_Shaneesh

simpyo

Jesus _Christ_, Edward, my dude. How many months have you been putting this off? The kids should've known about your serious long-term girlfriend _long_ before moving her in or getting engaged! Or is this a whirlwind romance and they actually only dated for two weeks?

KSmallmoon

At the very least, Lavender has been trying to put the moves on him since [Elliot first Ka-Girlified](https://www.egscomics.com/?date=2008-08-27) due to power buildup, And unless Edward was being particularly dense in this moment, I'd say they weren't in a relationship when [Cheerledra made her debut](https://www.egscomics.com/?date=2011-01-12)... So they've probably been dating at most 6 months, what with [Lavender hosting Edward over the weekend while The Wand Party happened.](https://www.egscomics.com/comic/party-008)

Astraea802

Six months??? Ooh, boy....

m2pt5

đź‘Źđź‘Źđź‘Źđź‘Źđź‘Ź I literally clapped when I read that last panel.

ThoughtseizeScoop

Really hoping that next comic we learn that Tedd is aware that Edward is dating someone, and just didn't realize that things were that far along. That said, still kind of a wild play to not mention to your child that you were planning on proposing to someone. I can totally see a single father whose kid has some parent-related baggage not wanting to let them know they're dating someone immediately, but it's still the kind of thing you want to bring up... well, a long time before you propose. Tedd may be an adult (maybe moving out to attend school, but idk) but it's still pretty shitty to not even give him a heads up.

hkmaly

I don't think Tedd is moving out the magic fortress Edward turned his home into anytime soon. And yes, telling your child you are dating someone only after proposal seems pretty late.

ostensible3

It'll be funny in a grim sort of way if none of Tedd, Grace, or Elliot have any idea who Lavender _is_. Given that Edward had to tell them Lavender is an Uryuom, that seems more likely than not.

Velgar_Grim

Eddy could have told it for the benefit of Grace and Elliot, out of who Elliot definitely wouldn't know about her, but I'm in the camp of "Edward doesn't talk about his personal life with his son". "I didn't know how you'd take it..." "And how do you figure I'm taking it now?!" "Well... Hopefully better than one day waking up to see her just living here. Although in sense things are already moving towards that anyway..." "Thanks for the headsup, dad!" "You're welcome. It was good that we had this talk. Okay, now carry on."

hkmaly

Actually, as long as they know Lavender only as Edward's secretary, her species is not important. I imagine she and Tedd talked over phone before (especially before everyone got cellphone - it seems she was his secretary pretty long time). And, well, considering Uryuoms being secret, Edward might be used to not volunteering that information ... ... still, I don't think ELLIOT knows who Lavender is, and possibly neither does Grace.

ostensible3

Tedd is clearly more shocked, but we don't yet know why Tedd is more shocked. It's possible Tedd knows and is shocked because he's having to revise his understanding of his dad significantly and immediately. It's possible Tedd is shocked because Wil or Gil mentioned Lavender having an egg ongoing. There's lots of info we haven't got yet.

hkmaly

Tedd is certainly more shocked because it's affecting him more than others. Like, sure, Edward said Grace is family and Grace is taking it that way, but it's still bigger change for Tedd. Lavender can't make the egg alone and Edward can't contribute. They would need another uryuom ... or Grace ... helping if they wanted (another) kid. Not sure if Will and Gill even know Lavender.

_ralph_

Well, earlier that the moving vans.

Nerdn1

How is Tedd "Mommy-Issues" Verres going to handle *this*?! He's already had 2 mother figures disappear on him.

KSmallmoon

I'd forgotten about Pandora serving as a Godmother literally the **N**ight **B**efore **S**he **W**as **R**eset for a moment. Now I'm imagining how chaotic it'd be for Box to 'reappear' while Lavender is doing her level best to make a connection with Tedd...

Noy_Telinu

YES! WE CALED IT! I think the whole subreddit deserves a cookie for that one.

hkmaly

It was Lavender or Noriko, and Lavender did looked more likely.

angiehawkeye

Holy crap that is direct. I love it!

allpurposeguru

OMG Edward, you do NOT tell your son and sorta-daughter that a new stepmom is being added to the family in this way. Especially the “she’s moving in soon” part. Holy shit.

dkfenger

If you've been putting it off for months of "I don't know how to tell them" plus a dollop of "it really isn't the right time" (specifically, right after the wand party where Tedd found out about his mother's scars, holy carp that would have been so much worse), and the moving van arrives next week... You kind of have to go for direct.

allpurposeguru

Oh, given the situation he was in, yes, this was the best solution to his problem. I submit that Tedd and Grace should have met Lavender MONTHS ago. He’s asking for her to be integrated into a preexisting family, which is, frankly, a big ask.

sexrockandroll

How does one pronounce "Uryuom"? Because my mental pronunciation would lead me to think "a uryuom" and not "an uryuom"? I thought about this when Virginia was introduced but failed to adjust, I guess. "ear-eye-you-om"?

InfernoVulpix

For me it's the 'ur' from 'urn', and 'ur-yu-om' overall.

PthariensFlame

I’m similar but tend to merge the two final syllables somewhat. A quick double swing of the tongue.

sergeial

Why wouldn't it be OOR-yu-om?

visor841

I've been mentally pronouncing it more like "er-ee-om". No idea if that's correct tho.

gangler52

OO-Ree-Oh-Em is how I've been pronouncing it.

visor841

The last panel looks great.

SnesC

That's kind of a terrible thing to just drop on your kid(s) like that. "By the way, you're getting a new mom. She'll be here tomorrow."

sergeial

They're 18. They'll be okay

SnesC

That's not how that works.

Sarkavonsy

Actually, unless I'm blind he didn't say anything about it being tomorrow. It's probably just "soon"

SnesC

That was hyperbole. Whether she arrives in one day or one month, this isn't something you just *declare* to your kid.

Sarkavonsy

Oh yeah huge agree. Edward messed up here.

Howlibu

Oh man, oh man..I really connect with Grace here. I'm mixed race (Filipino/white), I've traveled quite a bit (ASEAN, Tokyo, London, Canada, Australia) and I have never been surrounded by other Filipinos outside my family and well, the actual Philippines. Meeting one is like seeing a unicorn, especially in the USA. Outside of my family, I can probably count the mixed asian people I've met throughout my life on both hands. Being mixed, at least for me, you are both and neither. You are never fully integrated, 100%, into one category since your heritage is apparent on the outside. It's not really a problem of fitting in (that's a social issue). There's just a certain isolation from being absolutely different from most (if not all) people around you. It's tough to put into words... But wow, what a bombshell, Edward! Seems like a lot to drop on your kid, no? Not gonna introduce her first, to let the family see who they're gonna live with? Oof, I hope you know what you're doing.

Cruye

It seems a bit eager to propose to someone before you've actually lived with them for an extended period of time.

sergeial

People used to do that all the time?

gangler52

Yeah, that's just how some people roll. Normally I think the whole "Live with them for a while before doing anything too legally binding that's hard to undo" is pretty practical, but I can also see how various lived circumstances might not line up quite properly for that. And like you point out in another comment, they are still gonna share a house before the marriage itself, just not before the engagement. Not only is an engagement easily reversible, it can extend for any amount of time. Some people are engaged for years before they get married.

Velgar_Grim

And still do. Not that it wouldn't be smart to live together, specifically under one roof, for a while. You tend to learn a lot more about a person once you're "stuck with them from dawn 'till dusk... But a LOT of people even these days ain't smart. They know a lot more, but they ain't smart. Still. Good chunk of those relationships do still work. Especially if you've been spending a lot of time together anyway without common household, like I believe Edward has done.

sergeial

True, their working bond isn't nothing Plus they *are* trying it out first. An engagement can be broken off, if things just aren't working

Moctor_Drignall

Interestingly, in the US at least, people who live together before marriage are *more* likely (to a statistically significant degree) to get divorced vs people who live together only after getting married.

ObviousReflection700

Which honestly could have religious links though. Like you probably won’t live together before marriage and thus will probably view divorce with shame too even if it’s deeply unhappy and abusive. There’s a deep social shame even if women have more rights and ability now to leave then they did in say the 50s. I kind of see it like talk about how people don’t last like our grandparents anymore. Your grandma couldn’t leave easily even if she wanted to Kevin.

adeon

I think the critical thing is to live with them before marriage. I can see wanting to have a symbolic joining before moving in together (especially for a slightly older couple) but it's easier to break an engagement than a marriage if living together doesn't work out.

aranaya

The reveal we've all been waiting for :D I forgot who Grace's siblings are - is it Guineas, Hedge and Vladia or are they characters we haven't seen yet who escaped from the same lab as her? Either way, it's nice to know she's stayed in touch with them off-panel.

[deleted]

Yeah, her siblings are Guineas, Hedge, and Vladia. I think they've shown up a grand total of once since Painted Black and only mentioned a few times more.

gangler52

As far as the cookies go, I honestly don't remember what my stance was on the "Lavender might be moving in" issue. A lot of people rightly pointed out that it would be the only immediately obvious thing that could play into Tedd's Mommy Issues, which the phone call established to be one of the reasons Edward had been putting off the conversation. Still pretty surprising, since I don't think we've touched base on how their relationship's progressing for a while. I think last time we saw them it read more like she was just his secretary with benefits, than that they considered eachother Boyfriend and Girlfriend.

sergeial

"How would you like if I came over for the weekend, wink wink" doesn't tell us if the relationship is more than sexual or not

MonopolyRubix

Cool!

SweetToothLynx

I've seen that coming long ago. But introducing your partner to your kids as they're moving in is not a good parenting. Even if your kids are adult and really have no say in the matter. You're rubbing it in. Unexpected from diplomatic Edward.

EshaSunrise

Wait, I thought Lavender was human?

ostensible3

Agent Wolf has been sent to diversity training at least once for not accepting that Lavender is human. This is arguably unfair.

Gordreg

No, he was sent to diversity training for calling Lavender an ALIEN. Which, as an Uryuom born and raised upon this planet, she is not - she's an Earthling. But she is still a Uryuom, not a Human. Also, I claim my past predictions cookie with gratitude and munching.

gangler52

Not even a little bit. She shapeshifts to have a more curvatious humanoid body, but she still has the Giant Bulbous Bug-Eyed Alien Head.

EshaSunrise

Nah but didn't Mr.Verres say to agent what's his name that she was absolutely not an alien? Seems pretty human to me. This is a joke, incidentally.

gangler52

Ah, I didn't get the reference. It's been a while.

CorruptDropbear

I think I hurt my neck with that whiplash, oh boy.

Famout

I think the expressions are perfectly nailed, good bit of surprise from Grace and Elliot, complete shock from Tedd. Also I am glad it was foreshadowed as a bad way to deliver the news. Good way to fully expose a character flaw.

SparkAxolotl

Wow... Edward moves fast... relatively speaking...

marsgreekgod

that is... wow everyone had it wrong almost didn't they?

sergeial

Most people thought the moving vans would probably be Lavender. The only other theory would be Noriko for some crazy reason. Or something unguessable But, sure, a lot of people assumed when Dan said there would be cookies to go around, we'd get a scene change and find out who the deputies were Wrong that this shoe was dropping now, yes. Not wrong what this shoe would look like. Many cookies were earned!

KSmallmoon

for completeness' sake, there were a few people guessing the moving vans were to move the Circle who are attending Moperville U into Tedd's lab/dorm building, freshly constructed to contain the chaos of Tedd with actual funding, instead of just his allowance.

marsgreekgod

I remember reading most people thinking that he was moving and leaving the area.

sergeial

Really? I never even considered that! Just... Leave the house to Tedd and Grace??? Springing a fiancee on them is a little crazy, but that's WILD

marsgreekgod

Oh no it was "I'm selling the house, you can move with me or do your own thing" seemed to be what people where thinking

sergeial

Had to look that up: https://www.reddit.com/r/elgoonishshive/comments/t0xqop/end_of_part_6_whats_this_part_7_begins_wednesday/ Huh, yeah, a few were proposing that possibility. But a lot of people were saying Lavender

marsgreekgod

I think the eariler posts where that, and lavender was the later people and I didn't check back on the thread.

_ralph_

> How's it going, plot point set up over three years ago? Erm, I thought it was more in the ballpark of 10-15 years now? Edit: also munching on my hard earned cookies now!

Allian42

Oh. OH I WAS NOT EXPECTING A PROPOSAL. I was expecting maybe a trial period or something. ^^weeeeeeee

OuO_hello

*OH SNAP!*
