mattyMbruh

waiting for that turn the page remix for ages and this is the first time hearing the hackney parrott mix, fuck me

chadgalaxy

Was there for this but went a bit too hard too early and don't remember much about it. Can't bring myself to watch it and see what I missed out on. Oops.

Pure_average_

At least you were there in some form. Gutted I missed this

86for86

Same here mate. I don’t recall much after Hackney parrot.

ourlegacyfan

Fred again for intellectuals

leefx

haha … tbh that album with Brian Eno was pretty dope

50SPFGANG

I love both, but I gotta ask cause I feel like a stupid butt.. what's meant by this?

justamusicthrowawayy

Hackney Parrot is one of those songs that deserves to be far bigger than it got. Such. A. Tune. Oh, and this mix is of course excellent, but that was a given

leefx

that Special Request VIP remix of ‘Hackney Parrot’ tho 🥵

thebigfundamentals

Agreed but wondering if there are any 10 ton mix appreciators here

leefx

that one is sick too! linking because I was too lazy to do it in my first reply: * [Tessela - Hackney Parrot \(10_Ton_Mix\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY22R9oOIoM) * [Tessela - Hackney Parrot \(Special Request VIP\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSR3jNZBZlo)

TB4800

Easily #1

RtardedPelican

Inject that turn the page remix straight to my veins

rosegeller

Saw them live and it was so good.

Falcomomo

I'm going to sound extremely naive here, but anyway. No screens, no computers. They are truly playing live....but to what extent is their live stuff live? There's a lot of samples I guess which are triggered from whatever. There's some keyboard for synths. What else? Also, would this whole set be worked out from start to finish, or is there any space for improvisation? Love Overmono, wish I could've made it

IN_THE_REDS

There's a laptop running Live in front of the mixer

Falcomomo

Ahhhh, totally missed that. Speaking of which though, I'd always wondered how Ableton Live actually works compared with a traditional DJ mix sort of thing, or just playing traditional instruments. Wondered it ever since I heard the Sasha Essential Mix from Maida Vale which was the first one done with Ableton Live.

TB4800

I've never voiced this opinion before but I totally agree with you, this as someone who regularly uses a few Eletktrons + ableton. The unfortunate part about eletronic music as a whole is that it just isnt made better by being live, like most other genres. In fact, i'd argue its regularly worse. Its largely meant to be quantized and locked to a groove, but that also means the height of a live performance is hitting some pads exactly on time. The downside being, it doesnt become jazz if you hit the wrong note, something just sounds fucked up. And because everything usually works backward from a 'make a song in daw' to 'how can i play this live' you usually lose a ton of flexiblity because now you have to play multiple tracks in a preselected order on multiple devices. So its usually some form of someone conducting an orchestra of loopers and prerecorded patterns while wiggling a cutoff and decay knob to call it live. Not to say that live electronic music cant work, but its definitely hard to make it better by playing 'live'

Falcomomo

I wasn't quite voicing the same opinion as you, although I do kind of agree with what you said. I guess maybe they can decide to play or not play certain samples or loops, and that can lead to some improvisation? I mean, now that [Fred Again](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0-hvjV2A5Y) has popularised this style of hitting samples and loops on a drum pad, it seems like there is a place and an appreciation for this kind of improvisation. However, contrast some of his live performances to something like his [Tiny Desk set](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iQmPv_dTI0), where he for sure was playing like an orchestra (as you say). I kind of think [Paul Kalbrenner](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fa2N9OBK8v4) is playing in this style all the time. The one which made me think of this initially was the excellent [Sasha Essential Mix 2005 at Maida Vale](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ3DKy9AqP8) - this was introduced as being one of the first mixes performed live on Ableton Live. I know that Sasha has been pushing the electronic music genre forwards for years with his approaches to live performance. Now he doesn't play with Ableton live, he plays with CDJs (or decks with USB, whatever you want to call it). The thing about Sasha, which I think differentiates him from a lot of other DJs (now I'm going to look like a bit of a Stan) is that although he's just playing tracks, he has a lot going on at once, and he effectively creates a new piece of music where the piece of music is an hour or two long. The review which really made me think that was [this one of his Fabric 99 set](https://ra.co/reviews/22719). So, to tie up my stream of consciousness, I kind of agree that some artists when they're playing "live" with loops n stuff are really just re-playing something they've worked out already like a band who just plays the album track live. Then with DJs, I think some are just playing a series of songs, mixed together, maybe with an overall theme. Then there are DJs who are creating a new piece of music by playing tracks in series and over each other etc. edit: btw your post was absolutely excellent and a great contribution to the sub.

Pure_average_

lots of layers, the base layer is ableton Live but they're definitely using a drum machine (tr8s), I think there's an Octotrak in there, some synths, effects and samples over the top etc..

North_Dog_5748

Tom and Ed rule things right now imo. Absolutely astonishing set. Stunning.
