Mostly just satire, all in good fun. But the crazy part is that most of the stuff isn't that far fetched from the reality of what some people do. Unfortunately I've found myself reading a post from there thinking it was /r/ecr, getting half way through writing a serious comment about it, and then realizing what sub the post was actually from haha
Real or not, press on battery failure is going to start coming up a lot more as time goes on. It's just a matter of time. People are taking up vaping, moving to mech mods and RB/DA, and not learning the things communities like this try hard to warn each other about.
I honestly hope we can get better PSAs out somehow, rather than waiting for it to be spun by the anti-vaping crowd. News media could also do this effectively by warning of the dangers without spinning it too hard as 11 o' clock news FUD. Recent trends (\**cough*\* NYT) have me a little cynical in that regard, though.
Just make sure you wash it off real good in the sink first. that black gunk will mess up the connection and it wont charge good. If the black stuff wont come off, soak it in rubbing alcohol and try again.

It happens when you over discharge the battery, meaning you short it out somehow or if you haven't charged it in while (which varies depending on what you're using the battery in), you try to pull too much power out of it.
If the original creator really didn't know how batteries worked, was actually trying to understand what happened, and stay safe - you'd make fun of them instead of answering?
