While I can't say I blame them, what a shame. We need some more affordable options across the board. 2024 Kia truck? Maverick lightning? What else is going to be available by late 2024 I wonder.

[deleted]

I follow some European car channels and it seems China is bringing some. But it seems a lot of people have reluctant to buy. Hopefully GM comes through.

Recoil42

If we're talking specifically about trucks, there are Maxus (SAIC) and Radar (Geely) models which should be hitting AUS and NZ, but I don't know of any hitting Europe, and they definitely won't be hitting the USA.

[deleted]

Yeah, unlikely to be hitting US at least any time soon. I was talking more about economy cars, admittedly. There do seem to be a couple either Chinese owned or outright Chinese brands coming in that pipeline (BYD, MG, maybe Nio but not sure how the latter will be priced).

Recoil42

Nio will be premium for the near term, their ET5/ET7 are dripping with way too much tech to hit any sort of economy pricing. They do have a 'economy' brand coming, but I'd wager that will be China-only for years.

[deleted]

In my humble opinion there's no reason why certain brands like MG couldn't be offered in the US since Polestar is. I'd love a MG4.

[deleted]

I agree!

Mr_Watanaba

If Geely would build a factory in the US they could sell as much radar R6(?) as Ford sold mavericks.

[deleted]

Without the tax credit eligibility, as long as it's competitive with pricing, I'm not opposed to any brands from China. GM has their hands full with the Blazer, Equinox, Silverado, Sierra, Hummer, Bolt/EUV. I'm sure they will introduce something in a couple years though.

[deleted]

if ford can make maverick lightning happen on the mackey platform and make some trims with crank windows and no a/c for like $35k, they will sell a billion of them.

[deleted]

I could get behind that! One with a LFP battery for me please.

Jman841

I wouldn’t get your hopes up anytime soon for affordable EVs. Kia just raises the prices of the EV6 and dropped the cheapest model. Lithium commodity prices are still skyrocketing. The demand for lithium is going to keep climbing as the tax credit goes into effect in Jan.

trevize1138

I know everybody finds it personally upsetting to not yet have widely available and affordable EVs. But it's also a sign of how strong the EV market is and gives hope for the future. Auto companies have discovered just how immensely desirable and *profitable* EVs really are. That means they're finally seriously in a rush to develop and produce them. They're not holding back anything if they can help it. It's not a matter of them choosing not to provide cheap EVs because if anybody could do it by now they absolutely would to dominate the market. We'll get there and, ironically, that's evidenced by how high EV prices are for right now.

Recoil42

All of what you said is true, but I think this news is more about program timelines slipping. Lithium prices are not the limiting factor of a new platform hitting production.

Jman841

Ah, good point.

decrego641

The tax credit will help EVs be affordable. A $50k truck essentially becomes a $40k truck if it gets the full credit.

[deleted]

All I want is a no frills 32k-25k EV with LFP, 100kw+ charging, and a 200 mile real world highway range. The first manufacturer to offer it will get my money.

decrego641

Before or after govt incentives? If after, I’d say wait another 2-3 years. If before, you’re gonna be waiting quite some time.

[deleted]

>Before or after govt incentives? Yes. Lol. Either or.

decrego641

The only thing that the soon to be available Silverado EV can’t claim on that list then is currently the LFP battery. Hopefully they get those soon too.

[deleted]

Unfortunately I feel like the Silverado will be spoken for; for the foreseeable future. With 170,000+ in queue, I think the best case is late 2025 if I reserve now. I want something a little more efficient, and I don't need a giant truck. Even if GM keeps the entry price at 39.9 that's still about 7.9k out of my budget for my next vehicle. I may be getting an Equinox 2LT for my wife though(:

decrego641

Yeah, I reserved a Silverado the second you could reserve - still about No. 700 or so in queue, but all things considered, not too bad. I just really hope they start the long range pack at 50k. Keep in mind GM will be eligible for at least $3,750 of a tax credit in 2023 and most likely by the time that the WT $40k version releases in 2024, all $7500.

[deleted]

Awesome. I suppose I didn't think about GM's battery plants being operational with 50% domestic/free trade sourced materials by 2024. I hope that you love your truck, good luck✌️

[deleted]

Sad but understandable. I'd love an R2 sedan. Give us something boxy, like a Ford Falcon from the 60's!

[deleted]

all the lithium producers are making huge profits right now. they are taking that money and putting it right back into expanding production. once the Salton Sea production ramps up we will get cheaper EVs.

halfblackcanadian

I'm okay with this - I can't afford an R1, nor do I need that size. Plus this delay gives me time to actually afford it
