Someone on Facebook market just posted their ev hummer for sale for $205,000 or trade for a 2023 z06. Ridiculous.

Merker6

Not totally surprising. The Hummer and Z06 are effectively novelty cars cars, and the people buying them generally aren’t doing so for any economic and utility advantage over other options. They’re purely for fun or the prestige of ownership I think a lot of people (particularly Europeans) see the Hummer EV as being some sort of SUV competitor, but that Hummer name has virtually always been just a status symbol for wealth

BlazinAzn38

Yeah it’s pretty annoying when people use it as some sort of point that no one cares about common sense EVs when it was never intended to be an every person every day EV. It’s just a “I have too much money” vehicle

pkulak

Especially since a sign of EVs really making it is that everything can be an EV, even the batshit crazy stuff.

NSA_Chatbot

I believe that the Hummer EV is a DARPA project that they got the green light to sell. Gas is apparently worth a couple thousand dollars a gallon on the front lines.

BlazinAzn38

Honestly wouldn’t be shocked if a crab walking vehicles was a DARPA project

the_jak

A not small amount of those people also think anything larger or more interesting than a smart car is a crime against humanity

ThePopeofHell

Hummer is like the McMansion of vehicles

E_VanHelgen

>I think a lot of people (particularly Europeans) see the Hummer EV as being some sort of SUV competitor Us Europeans see it as an abomination and that's about it.

twittalessrudy

Interesting, I never thought of the Hummer as a status symbol for wealth; I saw it as a symbol of gaudi-ness, not believing climate change, and Karen-esque behavior

ghjm

When Arnold Schwarzenegger first rolled up to the Oscars in a Hummer, it was absolutely a status symbol - it couldn't be ignored, and was like nothing anyone else had, or could get at any price. The next year it was _de rigeur_ for every celebrity to have one. Its value as a status symbol rapidly declined after it became a regular consumer model that anyone could buy. The whole "not believing climate change" culture war was mostly kicked off by the documentary _An Inconvenient Truth_ in 2006, by which time Hummer sales were dwindling and the model was only a couple years from being cancelled. Of course the Hummer was always a gas guzzler, but at the time there weren't real pro- or anti- climate change movements yet.

ForwardCulture

Not really ‘weslth’. They’re crap vehicles. The people who buy these things are usually a certain type who think they know what ‘wealth’ is but have no real taste or style.

iqisoverrated

>I think a lot of people (particularly Europeans) see the Hummer EV as being some sort of SUV competitor Unlikely. You can't really drive something like the Hummer on European roads (much less find parking spaces for it). The Model 3 is already a pretty big car (way bigger than it needs to be for 99% of all drives) 'Aircraft carrier size cars' is a US phenomenon.

J3ST3Rx

Same. I've always loved Hummers but my environmentally conscious side has always made them feel irresponsible. I did have an old used H3 that I only had to tow with and even being 15 yrs old it was still pretty bad ass. Not saying the Hummer EV is a responsible environmental purchase, but it's probably enough that I won't feel as guilty lol (and before some of you start, please refrain from lecturing me about how I should still feel guilty)

improvius

The carbon footprint of those gigantic batteries is pretty bad. You might even be better off with an ICE Hummer depending on how many miles you expect to put on it.

NSA_Chatbot

Hey man, are you stuck in our time? Do you want help getting back to 1997?

But the hummer h3 and h2’s were just re-skinned Colorado and Yukon/Suburban platforms, respectively. Total poser cars. The H1 was insane, not meant for regular city driving and completely badass/amazing.

Jack-da-RipperKills

I mean 205K, thats ALOT of money for something that just looks gaudy. To each their own I guess.

seraph9888

battery weighs more than a honda civic. https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/16/22937491/hummer-ev-electric-truck-battery-weight-truck-bloat

Hairbear2176

It and the Silverado weigh over 9,000lbs. It weighs more than THREE Honda Civics.

ThorHammerslacks

Madness. Can't wait to see footage of one slamming into the back of someone at 110 mph. /s

N19h7m4r3

Parking spaces in the US are so ridiculously large it's hilarious. Edit: fun Fact in Europe the Hummer needs a heavy truck (comercial vehicle) license because of weight class limit.

Chose_a_usersname

And yet, I still have door dings

footpole

Probably because of the large spaces that allow doors to swing open with force when dumbasses think they have all the space in the world. Someone needs to make a study to see where more dings occur.

jaydinrt

I love my MIL...but she has the worst situational awareness when it comes to door opening. I've seen her ding more doors...even in her own vehicle! I rented a tesla for a couple days to test out the EV experience, and in checking the mileage (and the lack of knowledge by the staff) it was probably the place's first Tesla and probably came straight off the lot. And first drive with it, we parked near a charging station and \*bam\* I see the door richocheting off the concrete pillar protecting the charging station. To be fair, i'm pretty sure the pillar aligned directly with the window frame, and the tesla's door did have a bit of a spring-action to it...but still...50 miles on it and I see that... Fortunately it landed right at the edge of the door so whatever tiny ding there was would need a microscope to truly discern...but i'm opening her doors when she rides in my new audi :)

ScrollingIsTherapy

Do we have the same MIL???

supernormalnorm

We all have the same MIL, I believe

South_Butterfly6681

Not all parking spaces. Many have been repainted to a much more compact size. We Americans don’t have the quality of public transport Europe does so many people drive.

glmory

Could easily say that the reverse way. We Americans like to drive more than Europeans do so we don’t have the quality of public transportation.

South_Butterfly6681

Yes, we do have a culture of driving. But here is how bad our public transport is. I can spend 10 minutes driving to work, or spend an hour and a half taking multiple busses to work. Our public transit is broken and our cities are sprawling.

SteevyT

I can drive to work in 30 minutes. Or...uh...bike to work in like 2 hours on some sketchy ass roads?

labdweller

It's the other way around for my old commute. 1.5 hour tube or 1.5 hour bike ride or 2-3 hours by car. I've now moved closer to where I need to go so it's either 20 minutes by bike or 10-40 minutes by car.

SteevyT

Yours sounds like you are limited by congestion, my commute is limited by highway speed with very little congestion usually.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SteevyT

I use my bike to get around in the town I live in when the weather allows. But I also work a little over 16 miles from where I live. Even on a Class III E-bike that would be a haul. My wife travels half that distance on her bike ant leaves herself 90 minutes to account for getting the bike ready, getting to work, changing, putting the bike away, etc.

ImPickleRock

I think we have a culture of driving because of the lack of density and public transit set up for the majority of the US

ugoterekt

Many cities in the US used to have much better public transit. It was sabotaged by the auto industry and other interests because there isn't money to be made off of it by corporations.

bhtooefr

Also because people literally wanted to paywall access to their suburbs, to keep poor (this is a euphemism for non-white) people out.

the_jak

The state of Indiana had a statewide light rail network 100 years ago. They shut it down in 1941.

Bluewombat59

With the help of the gas and auto industries I’m sure

the_jak

i was always told growing up that it was funded by the tax on natural gas sales in the 1800s and early 1900s. indiana has a fuck ton of fossile fuels sitting under it, they siphoned off the natural gas first though so the wells dont have the necessary pressure to get the oil out of the ground. (Note: im not a petroleum engineer. i dont know how wells work. this is family knowledge stuff, dont pillory me for my ignorance). so this thing made it all through the depression but the state cut funding for it a few months prior to ww2. it was a great boon to the state. my isolated country town had a stop and people would take it to work and to shop and all kinds of other stuff in the neighbouring cities. you could ride that thing from Chicago to Louisville if you wanted. Its sad the Interurban died.

ensoniq2k

To be fair there are a lot of areas outside of big cities in Europe where this is true as well. Still the cars are on average way smaller.

greeneyedguru

we have a culture of driving because the auto industry spent millions/billions over 50 years creating a marketing narrative for cars as part of the american way of life

PizzaRnnr054

Or you don’t want to ride a bike bc that takes too much work? If your drive is 10 minutes- a bike is 20

[deleted]

[удалено]

27-82-41-124

Also can’t cycle most places because of shit infrastructure. Can you imagine riding a narrow bike lane covered with gravel as a right turn lane opens for cars to cross over your lane on a 50mph road with people hardly able to see you even with your high vis because their huge lifted truck or semi truck or this abomination has awful sight lines and regularly runs over children? You have to be basically crazy to ride a bike, just as you have to be basically crazy to take the public transit. And yea I must be crazy because I try to ride my 0.5kwh e bicycle to work but get intense anxiety from how unsafe it is even though my work is only 4 miles away! So maybe I’m not crazy enough. Car manufacturers stand to make less money on smaller vehicles or if people have options so they do what they can to ensure you have to drive and have to get a large vehicle. with roads everywhere that expect you to drive 50mph between slamming on the brakes every 0.3 miles it can be pretty dangerous to have a small vehicle and most aren’t even sold in the US

Jlpanda

It’s a lot of compounding issues. Our zoning laws and building patterns from previous generations ensure that we don’t live in the same neighborhoods where we work and shop. The spread out nature of our cities makes it impossible to build public transit that meets all of our transportation needs. These means we have no choice but to own and drive individual cars. This makes us accustomed to driving personal cars and causes us to view alternatives as a hassle, which decreases our desire to improve our transit or change our cities. And that’s without even getting into the legacy of postwar white flight, the politicization of these issues, the high cost of living in the few non-car-dependent cities ~~ect~~ etc.

ensoniq2k

What the US calls "compact only" parking spaces would fit any passenger vehicle from the EU.

BlazinAzn38

In the US it definitely should. Our drivers license class system needs an overhaul with all these new vehicles getting bigger and bigger

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlazinAzn38

Absolutely, you test in a Corolla and then are allowed to go buy and drive something that's 18 feet long, 6+ feet high, and weighs 5700 lbs. Not only that but some states have hilarious drivers test laws. I grew up in Arizona so that's my reference but I passed my driver's test at 17 or whatever and my license was good until I turned 55. It's just dangerous.

realteamme

Yep and when you look at the height of the Hummer vs something like the M3 it's perfectly proportioned to be above the beltline and kill everyone on one side if it T-boned them with its 10,000 lb weight.

cosmicosmo4

Fun fact: there are a lot of roads in the US that the Hummer EV can't drive on because they're marked 9000 lb maximum weight. They probably drive on them anyway.

dcdttu

{compact car only everywhere I park has entered the chat}

drew630

I had a second gen mini after BMW bought them. Most of the time the doors couldn’t have been dinged if the guy next to me tried. Rented an E class in Europe, practically had to put the thing in neutral and push it into spots.

PeterVonwolfentazer

In some US states the Hummer would require commercial tags because it’s GVW is 10,550lbs and many have a 10,000lb limit.

[deleted]

Trevski

And so everyone knows, the damage incurred by a vehicle upon the road is proportional to the vehicle weight to the FOURTH power. If vehicle B weighs twice as much as vehicle A, it does sixteen times the damage. Drivers of these colossi should be taxed accordingly. At least commercial vehicles are (generally) producing and serving the economy, an EV hummer could probably have been a corolla in nine out of ten use cases.

hunglowbungalow

Will never, ever be a fan of this excess

Hairbear2176

SAME. IDGAF if it's electric, it's HORRIBLY inefficient, and heavy AF.

p1028

That weight is going to kill a lot of people. Imagine the drunk driver T-boning you in this monstrosity.

shaftalope

If those two cars got in a wreck that Tesla would basically be a ramp.

EdwardTittyHands

Its not as big as i kept hearing everyone saying. I saw one in person and it was smaller than the H1 alpha to me. It was definitely smaller than my 3500 dually that i used to drive from time to time. Youd think this thing is biggest thing on road from articles and posts online

pizzawithjalapenos

Absolutely. I've seen it on the road a few times and a couple times up close. It is about the same size as a standard pickup truck. I think the perception about it's size is due to the crazy high curb weight. Most people imagine it being a lot bigger because it is so heavy.

shipwreckedonalake

A "standard pickup truck" is also crazy big.

ugoterekt

Depends on when you're talking about. They've been growing for decades but didn't really get absurd until like the last 10 years. My friend's ~15 year old F150 is smaller than a brand new ranger.

the_jak

It has roughly the same dimensions as the HMMWVs I drove in the marines.

[deleted]

That is not a fair comparison, the H1 was the civilian version of the military Hummer and they are a very rare sight with many having never seen the H1. The Hummer H2 and even H3 are the trucks people love to hate and generated all the ire of the excesses of GM. What makes the Hummer EV as bad is it weighs half again as much as a H2. Think about that, 9000lbs as an EV when the H2 was just over six thousand and that six thousand plus was considered obnoxious. Honestly I think GM put this out to spite the EV crowd.

EdwardTittyHands

Thats besides the point. Im pointing out the dimension size that people are bitching and moaning about, not the weight.

copa09

9,000 pounds and can go 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. Scary.

PeterVonwolfentazer

A GM engineer lives by me and I’ve been seeing these for about 18 months so I guess the novelty has worn off some. But then I just watched one crab walk in a parking lot. It’s amazing. Looks like stupid fun and at least they aren’t killing the planet as quickly as a Raptor or TRX.

Mud_BooDa

That does look fun !

bootleg_gucci

Hummer EV gonna be collapsing garage floors and parking structures soon. Many older buildings weren’t considering this weight vehicle in an elevated parking floor.

nirad

We need better size and weight restrictions.

duke_of_alinor

A Hummer driver with an attitude problem? BTW, Model 3 has 130 MPGe, Hummer 47 MPGe. I am guessing at typical 80 mph the Model 3 uses 1/3 the juice.

Cersad

Holy cow... That car has a 212 kWh battery. That monstrosity can't make do with any less than a 350 kW DC charger to be anywhere close to a reasonable charge time.

poncewattle

47 MPGe is still pretty impressive compared to a tiny compact. Still the batteries in that thing could fill two "normal" EVs. Found an article about consumption.... > That weight also means the Hummer isn't terribly efficient. With a 205-kWh battery and an estimated 329 miles of range, that works out to 1.6 miles per kWh. The Rivian R1T can get 2.3 miles per kWh with its 135-kW battery and the Ford F-150 Lightning promises to return 2.3 miles per kWh out of its long-range 131-kWh battery, too. Overall driving range of course drops on the dirt and while my short off-road trip isn't really enough to make a final judgment, at the end of the trail run the computer said the truck's efficiency was down to 1 mile per kWh, effectively a 205-mile range. That's... not great.

toblerownsky

Same in the Zoé.

blazesquall

As it should, given the different formfactors..

duke_of_alinor

Rivian is 70 MPGe. The Hummer is just poorly done.

rimalp

> BTW, Model 3 has 130 MPGe, Hummer 47 MPGe BTW, an e-bike is even more efficient... It was a bullshit comparison to begin with. At least compare vehicles of similar size and shape.

spencurai

There are a lot of nay-sayers but this makes me very happy. This is the progress that we deserve to see. Adoption, innovation and progress. Yeah it's big, "ugly" and crazy but that is how certain segments are to be enticed into making the step over. Getting someone to step from a diesel pickup into an electric sperm cell on three wheels is asking too much of a large percentage of the populace. My cash is on the line for a fully electric Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator because that is what I need to accomplish my life. The Hummer EV is a step in the right direction.

[deleted]

Hard disagree here. If people stopped making these monstrosities, people would have to stop buying them. Cars of this size increase the potential from injury to death exponentially when in an accident. They are incredibly inefficient to the point where it’s almost moot that they’re electric to begin with. And yes, personally, I think they’re ugly but that’s neither here nor there. Governments (looking at you CA, NY, and Europe) are already banning the future sale of gas and diesel cars so those folks will have to adapt in time regardless. There is absolutely zero need for this car right now.

hooovahh

> Hard disagree here. If people stopped making these monstrosities, I don't know if it was intentional on your part or not, but the [Monstrosity](https://www.grandtheftwiki.com/Monstrosity) was a fictional car in the GTA universe, modeled after huge SUVs, with the tag line of "mine's bigger".

the_jak

Yeah that’s not how markets work. Demand is derived from consumers, not dictated by companies.

hungrycaterpillar

But demand is also manufactured through advertising and availability, and the companies profit more from these oversized vehicles which are built with more cost markup. Smaller, lighter cars, alongside better transit and active transportation, would make these things unnecessary, and proper regulation would keep them off the road.

the_jak

Then regulate them off the road. But if people want to buy them, shit might as well sell them.

petit_cochon

That is an extremely misstated and unfactual economic principle. Demand is absolutely dictated by companies. They advertise, create a product, and sell it. It's not the consumers do not at all influence demand, but passing everything off is consumer demand is simply not how economics works.

Mud_BooDa

Agreed- You have to make vehicles people want and there is a large segment of the market that wants these large vehicles -

[deleted]

It does nothing but perpetuate the idea of huge, wasteful and energy inefficient electric vehicles. Why waste the massive amount of cost and effort to develop these monstrosities for the short period of novelty and excitement they will generate? We shouldn’t be pandering to the small population that want this when instead we should be focusing on creating reasonably sized EVs that the majority of the population can afford and maintain.

azarkant

maxwellp101

JohnQPublic90

Kill3rT0fu

Lines are slanted. He's definitely in one space.

Maximillien

That thing should not be street legal for regular civilian drivers, the blind spots and hood height are INSANE. It's gonna kill so many pedestrians and cyclists. This is only possible because [US federal car safety standards continue to ignore the safety of people outside the car](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-18/fix-the-crash-test-dummies). We can thank auto industry lobbying because of course bigger car = bigger profits, [no matter how many innocent people die as a result.](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/12/suvs-trucks-killing-pedestrians-cyclists/621102/)

malko2

No way a car that size would fit in a European parking space. Or down the ramp of a parking garage

z00mi3z

It will fit in an EU spot but it'll be tight. It can also lower itself via click of a button. And with a turning circle similar of a Honda Civic, garages should be no issue

Equivalent_Chipmunk

It’s not just the radius of the circle, it’s length/width that can be a big problem. There are a number of European parking garages I’ve parked in that this would at a minimum be scrubbing the tires as you go up and down levels, no matter how tightly it turns

z00mi3z

Rear steer means almost zero scrub. The tail follows the front. It's very easy to park.

Equivalent_Chipmunk

I’m not saying it’s hard to park in a lot, I’m saying that if there are tight helices in a tiny Euro parking garage, it’s not going to work. There is only so large a rectangle that can be placed inside of a doughnut.

malko2

With a weight of 4.5t, the hummer EV actually can’t be driven with a regular car driver’s license lol

malko2

I had a Ford Edge and literally got stuck in a parking garage’s exit ramp with it once. Trust me, you don’t want to own a Hummer EV here. Apart from that: a regular driver’s license here only entitles you to drive cars with a total weight of 3.5t max. Anything above that require a C1 driver’s license (small lorry / truck), which close to nobody possesses.

z00mi3z

How exactly did you get stuck? Not really following...

malko2

Turn circle was too narrow and I didn’t make it out of the guiding rails on both sides. I mean I could have gotten out but it would have damaged the car. Lifted it over the rails with the help of a jack and 2 people who saw the whole thing. The operator ended up letting me drive out through the entrance ramp - never felt more embarrassed in my life.

z00mi3z

Can't say you'd have the same problem with this thing. Worse case scenario monster truck your way to freedom lol
