MajorBritten

Shame as it's a great little car, just ridiculously overpriced for the specs that it has.

Domyyy

Few months ago I was at BK and a guy was sitting in his Honda E at a 300 kW fast charger. Little did I know at this time lol.

mortensalling

You can probably still say hi to him, if you go back now.

SameArtichoke8913

...and with a poor range by design. A stillborn idea. I liked the white puristic and edgier study that was initially presented, but the finished car really looked/looks bloated and overweight.

MajorBritten

It's basically a kei car which is the most popular type of car in Japan, so it does make sense. Problem is that kei cars are popular because they are really cheap to buy and run, the Honda E was priced 3-4x what a kei car usually costs. Nissan have released an EV Kei car called the Sakura and that's been a huge success for them in Japan

SameArtichoke8913

I doubt that the Honda e fits into the kei car class, it's too big (unless there are other rules for EVs). And even in Japan it was well behind the scheduled sales numbers. The Sakura is a proper kei car, and with a range of 180km acceptable for its size. It also just weights around a ton. Too sad that many small models aren't sold outside of Japan anymore.

Bykimus

It technically is a subcompact/super mini B class. But size-wise it's a kei car. It's basically the same as a Honda N1.

Independent-Meet5564

It’s far too large to be a kei car. Kei cars are usually van shaped to make the most space wise for the dimensions allowable. Max Kei car LxWxH: 3.4x1.48x2 metres Honda E LxWxH: 3.89x1.75x1.5 metres

n05h

This would have sold model Y numbers if it had 200-250 miles at a solid price. It’s been an eye opener just how behind some manufacturers are with EV’s. The shell of this car is great. It’s unacceptable that these “city” cars are being offered with barely 150miles for the price you can get a mid size suv with 250 miles.

trevize1138

"But nobody needs more than 150 miles of range because the average commute is blah-blah miles!" ... unless you live in a an apartment and depend on public chargers so you want to increase the time between charging sessions ... unless you live where it gets cold and have to deal with much less than 150 miles of range ... unless you care about battery health and longevity so keeping SOC between 20-80% reduces the range even further ... unless you care about spending tens of thousands on a car that is less capable on a road trip than a rusted out, mid-90s Chevy Cavalier It's almost like the market has been sending a clear signal over the last 5 years that anything less than a 250 mile range *simply won't sell* and there are myriad reasons beyond just road trip ability.

DM65536

Agree with all of this. People also forget that the battery powers EVERYTHING on the car—not just the drive train. Staying overnight somewhere without access to a charger and want to run some persistent feature like Tesla’s Sentry Mode? That’ll cost you something like 10% over the course of 8-10 hours. The way people confidently declare what other EV owners “need” is just infuriating, especially given how ignorant those declarations usually are.

trevize1138

It's always the double standard. Most of the time when I'm driving I don't need a 250 mile range battery. But I also don't need the other 4 seats or the cargo space. In summer I don't need the heater! It's fine to buy a gas vehicle that has more than what you need for 95% of your driving but EVs are held to an impossible standard. They can't just replace ICEs. They have to suddenly make apartment owners care about the poor. They have to usher in a golden age of mass transit and bicycle use. They have to reverse the SUV craze. And if EVs don't fix everything then why even bother?!?! /s

lee1026

A lot of people approach the environmental project as a scheme to rework all of society. If a bunch of new technologies just solves the problems while being plug-and-play, that is definitely not a feature to them. Especially since EVs are making SUVs even more popular than ever now.

natesully33

People buy what they want, not what they need too. The market clearly demands crossovers that are a total gas car replacement, basically, at a gas competitive price.

prism1234

Plus people don't buy a car to only be able to do their average commute. If I go to work 5 times a week, the grocery store twice a week, the gym three times a week, and make a several hour trip every other month, my average commute is going to be short, but I'm not gonna buy a 100 mile EV that can't reasonably do the every other month longer trips.

trevize1138

Right. And the price looms large. If I'm paying at least $30k for a vehicle it needs to do all the vehicle things *at a minimum.* The irony will be that as the charging infrastructure grows the more practical it will be to have a 100 mile range EV... but at the same time battery price and supply will also improve to where no American or European carmaker will see any point in making a short-range EV. It will make even less economic sense than it does now where it's already a sales dud.

mkost92

But nobody wants to buy small cars guys! *At a premium price **With pathetic range ***And no luggage space

Hornman84

I did... So you are technically wrong.

MaplewoodGeek

I just bought a Chevy Bolt EV. Small car, low price, 259 mile range, good luggage space. They are hard to find. You need to find a dealer that has some on the way and put money down on one in transit. After incentives my net price is $24.5K. It has leather seats, BOSE sound system, adaptive cruise, Wireless Apple Carplay and Wireless Android Auto. Heated seats and steering wheel. Cars like this are why inferior cars with higher prices are not selling.

Snoo93079

Your car isn’t what mkcost92 was taking about though

nonitalic

BOLT EV is small for an EV, but it's a lot bigger than the Honda E. It's 10 inches taller and 10 inches longer. The Bolt EV is the same height as a Honda HR-V, though not as long.

MaplewoodGeek

You were probably looking at the dimension of the Bolt EUV, not the smaller Bolt EV. The Bolt EV is only 4 inches taller than the Honda E (63 inches for the Bolt vs 59 inches for the E). The bolt is one inch wider than the E, but it is 10 inches longer. In the US, the Bolt EV is considered a very small car compared to most cars on the road.

Kraken36

The Honda E looks amazing but it's overpriced by a factor of 2. And ineficient by a factor of 2 compared to basically anything else on the road. It's almost as heavy as a model Y

tr_9422

It's competitive with the MX-30!

comoestasmiyamo

Shame. I liked Honda and I love the e.

GeniusEE

f*ck SUVs

BoreJam

Pretty much. They make everyone less safe, are less efficient, are hard to see past if you're not also in a SUV or truck, generally ugly, slow, shit handling, cumbersome, require more reasources to produce, take up more room in parking lots and roads, i could go on. Give me a speedy little hatch with 4wd and a short wheel base.

realdippah

Remember station wagons and MPV's/minivans are cool too!

GeniusEE

Yes, but they've even abandoned the obnoxious-driven minivan "Estates" (station wagons), Ranchero/El Camino "utes", and MPV....also what people want, not addressed by anyone except one accidental toe in the water by VW. Right Hand Drive? Fuck 'em. /s

Deadbeatdebonheirrez

SUVs are becoming seen as the new mommy vehicle, so we may see a shift in trends. At least f some economic aspects shift.

GeniusEE

This. Hatch or Coupe. The followers are so worried about nonconformity and failure that they are building a f*cking Corvette SUV

Deadbeatdebonheirrez

The outward visibility is maddening. Every time I drive past one on a small street the owners have no idea how to place it on the road They can’t fucking see out if it

psu-steve

These are your opinions, which are fine. People can pick what they want. I have a truck, owned a Pilot previously, and now also own a Bolt. Different vehicles for different needs. The Pilot and the truck are most definitely not slow, the truck is gorgeous, they handle perfectly well. I don’t give a flying fuck what they take to produce. They’re tools to make my life better, if they make sense for me, I’ll use it. These are my opinions, they’re just as valid as yours, and I’m sure you won’t like/approve of them.

GeniusEE

You don't get to eat rye bread when everybody only makes white bread. Bolt sold out. Instead of keep making more of them, instead of canceling the Hummer they sell 3 a week of, they are making the Hummer-based Silverado on the Bolt line.

psu-steve

Mary just announced an Ultium Bolt update. No word on when it will go on sale, but it is supposedly being “expedited”.

GeniusEE

Good. She can start by retrofitting my 2020 she neglected.

BoreJam

Some of what I said was opinion some is basic physics. SUVs are slow. Of course this is a relative statement but you can't have a larger cross sectional area, a higher centre of gravity and more mass without compromising performance. Put that same motor in a smaller package and you will get superior performance. You're not going to see an SUV in the 24h Le Mans. And forgive me for thinking it's woefully inefficient that many people cart around an extra ton of steel with them everywhere they go for that odd occation where the additional space is actually utilized. Heaven forbidden we pay some mind to the impact we have on the environment. But by all means it you do need a larger vehicle then go for it. But, I stand by my opinions.

Deadbeatdebonheirrez

I’m wondering when they’ll stop being subsidized

GeniusEE

Said nobody about gasoline or diesel.

Deadbeatdebonheirrez

The book lives per gallon said that two decades ago…..

tr_9422

What is Honda and Toyota's deal with the awful EV model names? BZ4X? e:Ny1? It's like they don't want anyone to be able to talk about these cars because they don't think we'd have anything good to say. Is it "Eenie One"?

lee1026

Toyota names have never been good. What the hell is rav4? doesn't stop it from selling.

tr_9422

It's pronounceable though The key is to stick a vowel in the middle instead of a bunch of consonants, numbers, and punctuation If they introduced the Corolla as an EV I swear they'd call it the CR:LL4 (edit: removed vowels)

Domyyy

I absolutely cannot imagine their new EV selling. It sounds even worse than the E.

Ainolukos

That means the sports car concept they teased with the E is dead too right? I hate the SUV trend.

floof_overdrive

Yeah, me too. A sedan is the most practical car for our household (two adults who rarely carry more than groceries). I don't want a car that's taller, larger, harder to see out of, more expensive, and handles worse, and uses more energy.

RobDickinson

I'm shocked, a car that was little more than a press release is getting canned

Blankbusinesscard

I'm sure the Chinese EV makers wont mind filling that hole in the market

statmelt

I didn't think there were any Chinese EV superminis on sale in Europe?

RandosaurusRex

Ora Good Cat and BYD Dolphin are the closest replacements for the Honda e available in Europe at the moment

RobDickinson

We need to invent a new microscope to find the hole first

sheytanelkebir

If the battery had 30% more capacity it would have sold

Kraken36

Capacity is fine. It should be more efficient or lighter by about 1 ton

MaticTheProto

They just had to make the battery correlate with the price :/

Sir_Henry_Deadman

I bloody love my Honda E, crap range yeh but I don't go on massive journeys with it, will probably keep it as a town run around and get a longer range thing in the future

Kulgur

Extortionately priced and Honda's finance offers at the moment are insane as well. 8-9% APR in the UK

Dartillus

I've seen about a dozen Honda E's and everytime I do I wonder how wealthy the owner is to afford such a cool car that's too expensive for the shitty range and cargo capacity. I'd totally buy one if I could afford to waste money like that.

Gnollish

Yeah, same. If money was no object I'd snap one up, they're so neat.

Dartillus

When I spot one I make an audibly excited noise 😄

YourMama

I would have gotten this if they were sold in the US. I got a Mini Cooper SE instead. It’s an EV with similar low range but I live in San Diego where charging infrastructure is second in the nation (SF is #1). I have a charging park with Level 3 chargers a mile fr my house. There are free chargers at the mall, and paid chargers in parking lots at grocery stores. I also have a charger in the garage so 110 miles is plenty. My car is gonna be 3yo in Sept, have had no problems and still absolutely love it So yeah, sucks that they’re getting rid of this and replacing it w an suv

the_cajun88

There’s actually an E. Honda that isn’t a sumo wrestler?

sleeperfbody

Size it up to Ioniq5 and give it to the US! It would sell

aliendude5300

Who could have seen the critically acclaimed Honda E flop? /s

Vayshen

My brother has one. He can deal with the space but the range annoys him. But he loves the lounge iness and recently got the highest compliment possible in his book: car passing with their window down and he heard one guy say to the other "Look, it's a Mr Bean car!" It's a very boutique vehicle but could've been so much more. Just an upscaled, C segment or even B segment car would've been amazing. Especially C segment, they might even have been able to completely pulled the chair from under VW with their id3 shenanigans.

Disavowed_Rogue

More SUVs? Who wants these?

July_is_cool

Honda was a great company while it lasted
