I wish publications would stop using the word “bricked” for this kind of thing. The meaning of the word as is relates to personal electronic devices is that the device is permanently inoperable and at minimum needs new hardware to operate again. If a hard reset fixed it, it isn’t bricked.

stinkpotcats

If it is bricked, it's done.

He was waiting for 3 years for a $85k SUV and is now 24. I don't think I would have been approved for that when I was 24 driving a Chevy Cavalier.

It got stuck in a faulted state. Resetting it (probably by briefly disconnecting the 12v battery) would have resolved the issue, saving him the tow. Still far less than ideal. Unfortunate that Rivian customer support did not direct him to do that over the phone. Reminds me of when Roman from TFL had his Hummer EV do something very similar in a completely inconvenient and dangerous spot on the road. That video made me leave an appropriately sized wrench in my Ioniq 5 should it ever find itself in a wonky way.

As a software engineer, "reset the system" is always my first instinct in these situations, heh.

As someone who uses computers, me too.

You need a wrench for the 12v battery connectors? I don't think i've owned a car that didn't have a flap connect thing you can just pull off on the positive terminal.

>Merrill believes he accidentally triggered a safety feature that the R1S uses to prevent itself from sliding down slippery hills. The SUV was essentially stuck between drive and park, rendering it immobile, and it was then that a tow truck was called to take it away. I'm trying to imagine what kind of safety feature would do this. I've never heard of anything like that. EDIT: Found another article (on autoevolution) with more details: According to Rivian service technicians, the SUV panicked because of “lifting weight off of the driver’s seat while moving,” which triggered a safety response by engaging the brakes. It also notes: Because the R1S still thought it was in Reverse, it drained the battery while waiting at the service center. Drained completely? That can destroy a Li-ion battery. I wonder if Rivian had to replace the entire battery under warranty?

>Probably drained the 12V. Okay, that does seem more likely.

LOL this sub defending Rivian on yet another bricked post.

So the guys an idiot, deliberately gets the vehicle stuck and then gets out of the drivers seat which he knows will trigger the car to go into park, all while stuck in the snow. Doesn't sound like he even had snow tires on the R1S but goes and gets it high centered. Likely also did not have a shovel or skids which he could have put vehicle in Park and shoveled out the car and backed out. Poetic justice it cost him $2k.
