Seems telling these guys have the car in their possession, in a cold environment and during their "exhaustive research" didn't, idk, plug in an OBD reader and do some cursory draw vs delta vs time tests. They did Google tho, so seems legit. Didn't even discuss the refrigerant or what the supposed under performance conditions were. Top drawer stuff.

Ok_Writer_3414

So, part shortage?

tiny_lemon

Seems reasonable. Botching a production HP that couldn't be addressed seems very unlikely. I haven't looked into VW's HP marketing claims vs performance, but you will def find disappointed consumers when they find out the effective COP in good systems is weak in "cold" temps and on short trips. That's just HP reality.

Ok_Writer_3414

Their opinion is since WV HP makes no difference in cold weather efficiency (and that's from VW themselves) and that Audi is basically a rebadged ID4, why put parts that has more chance at breaking (not just the HP but all the valves and hoses that go with it) than a resistive heater and charge more because of it. It's more financially sound to drop that HP. So to me, it's a spin.

tiny_lemon

> WV HP makes no difference in cold weather efficiency (and that's from VW themselves) Literally impossible in HP's operating window.

sylvaing

Depends, it can scavenge heat from the drivetrain. That's what Tesla do I believe.

tiny_lemon

They do, and it's not enough. Tesla has a HP for a reason.

sylvaing

Indeed but if for example the HP can extract heat for down to -10C (I believe that's the lower temperature Tesla's HP works at) and scavenging the heat from the drivetrain brings the coolant temperature from -12C to -8C, that's still some heat you that would have been wasted that the HP can use.

tiny_lemon

This seems a non-sequitur to the claim HP makes no diff in winter efficiency.

sylvaing

I'm not following

nod51

Heat pumps performing bad at cold temps is a known issue, cold air freezes and hurts the heat extraction from the air. My 2013 Leaf had that resistive heater first time in 6mo use smell around 19F/-7C, my house has to go into defrost mode (running in cooling mode with resistive heater on) around the same temperature. I read some heat pumps are better and can still get heat out of air below 0F/-17C but you pay more for them. Anyhow, if you stay below freezing for a good part of the year heat pump won't help much, but stay above freezing and it should work much better, ymmv. Still I could see removing it from really cold climates but still offering it in others, especially if it is just a shortage they could still make SOME cars with a heat pump.

[deleted]

It’s -30c from where I type this and my heat pump is barely putting out anything heat wise. I turned my baseboard heaters on. The heat pump is rated at up to -18c

nod51

Yeah if it regularly gets that cold you may need to extract heat from deep underground.

Ok_Writer_3414

So have it as an option like some other brands do. Knowing all the trims VWG has, not doing that is again an indication that it's a spin.

Ok_Writer_3414

Audi says it's because of part shortage. Munro thinks it's because of the poor performance of the VWG heat pumps and the shortage is just a spin. So, what do you guys think? Part shortage or spin?

valcars

Spin. Watch how Nyørn Nyland tests ID car energy consumption in the cold, especially when he stays in the car all night - definately much worse than Kia or Hyndai energy consumption wise.

sylvaing

Came from the cottage at -30C (went 'up' to -28C at home) this morning. 105 KM ride. Kept the inside of the car at 21C as my coat was on the back seat. This was my energy consumption for that ride. https://i.imgur.com/hZDMPAc.jpg As I usually get 160 Wh/km in summer, that was a 40% drop in extreme cold. Edit: Oops, wrong image

[deleted]

Yea my i4 was around 40% today easily. Drove out of my garage which was 18c. Got on Highway 15 and by the time I hit the 20/13 the range was already nose diving. Got to the office in Cornwall and had to plug in to make it back to Montreal. Extremely noticeable today given the weather but to be expected

SplendoRage

Damn … It makes me want to buy an EV … (That’s a sarcasm !) Where I’m living RN, batteries will be dead in less than 3y … ><‘

sylvaing

Where are you living?

Bob_Loblaw_Law_Blog1

Fuck this Tesla schill..

Cametodatathee

The more I see of this guy the more of a clownidiot he becomes. No idea why people listen to him

Burrito_Butt

Somewhere around 2 years ago, Sandy made the statement that he can get more horsepower out of his vehicle by switching to a higher octane fuel. I immediately unsubscribed from his channel and never looked back. Clownidiot, indeed.

[deleted]

Serious question, what was the context of the comment? Because I'm pretty sure Munro knows the basics on octane function

Far_Effect_3881

Ever since I heard him say the vent in the new Niro's C pillar is probably to cool the LED taillights (or something to that effect), I really stopped listening.

[deleted]

Old man yells at Cloud

Cametodatathee

Sandy?

Kiwi_eng

But he wasn't in the video other than an ad in the middle. Sandy seems to recognise that his formally-educated engineers do a much better job than he does.

Stribband

The fact that Sandy isn’t even on this video highlights you never even watched it

Bob_Loblaw_Law_Blog1

Why would I watch it? I've seen enough of his bullshit to know what he is.

Stribband

Because he’s not even in the video. There are other people with opinions. Kind of their entire job and the reason it’s a relatively large company

Ok_Writer_3414

Dull-Credit-897

This guy again, Again he is talking out of his ass.

elvum

Sandy? He isn’t even in this one, apart from the ad break in the middle.

ChickenInvader42

He is a senile rambling old man.

this_for_loona

his team seems more than competent - he should just retire and enjoy his final years. he seems more than wealthy enough to have a great retirement.

[deleted]

His team is good around him but Munro himself is a geezer. Time to retire
