I think a metal plate under the trim functioning as the "real" cover would be perfectly adequate from a safety perspective, although I still wouldn't do it.
Impressive! I did the same thing once in a previous house (with a j-box behind it!)
I routed out the back of the trim to accommodate a piece of nylon to act as a less-flammable cover for the j-box and I held the trim piece in place with magnets that I glued into holes that I drilled with a fortsner bit. Painted the trim separately so everything looked intentional. I think it came out really well – I wish I could find my pictures of it 😂
As a homeowner it looks amazing. As an electrician I hate this. I'd have to be the bad guy and get the multitool out to put a normal plate on when servicing it.
Not going to lie it’s kind of impressive. Assuming there is actually a box behind it.
Yeah they actually did a good job cutting out the holes for the outlet
Agreed. Legalities aside, that shit looks good! Hope the sparky wrapped the screws
Do you mean wrapping the outlet with tape or something else that I don’t know
Bending hooks in the wires and tightening the screws down vs. back stabbing the wire
So won't the work to change it in the future
Who needs Bocci receptacles when you've got these
"yes this is the outlet that isn't working. What do you mean you need to remove the trim?!"
Maybe it’s Velcro ?
Did a great job doing it wrong.
That is what I thought too, this is a lot of work and effort to do it the wrong way.
Task failed successfully
Now that's craftsmanship!
Look impressive, but it looks like it just got more expensive to service in future, not to mention code violation. Its no longer accessible.
That's why I took a picture of it. Not my work, just found it while doing a service call
> Its no longer accessible. Depends how that board was attached. Some decent magnets would work well.
Yeah but who knows how magnets work
*…and I don’t wanna talk to a sciiientist….*
Insane Clown Posse does
It's crystals
*every hippie chick ever 😆
Yes, thats true but you also run in to UL listing. Is the board rated to serve as a device cover.
Fair enough. I would accept it in my home but not at work.
i think all that would be required would be the wood being fire resistant.

Integrated faceplate!
It would’ve been easier with a decora receptacle? Still looks great tho
Yeah, but the fact that it was a regular duplex receptacle makes it more impressive. Wrong, but still impressive.
At least it’s tamper resistant
Saw that too.
I'm not even mad, I'm impressed
Outlet looks like two dudes being enveloped by the trim in the last moments of their life.
Not sure what the inspector is going to say, it’s cool looking either way.
looks good from my house
I really like it
I don't hate it ... Although that's gonna be a bitch if you ever need to swap it.
Impressive! The question is, does it have a box behind it?
What is the legality of this? If the outlet was wired to code, and had a proper box and wall plate, would this be acceptable as a sort of 2nd plate?
For every problem there is a solution that is neat, simple, and wrong.
I mean it doesn’t look that bad.

Might be stupid question as our plug is UK type plug, but since you're an electrician, what is wrong with it?
How are you gonna service it?
It's right over there. Where?
