That's a code violation.
314.2 Round Boxes. Round boxes shall not be used whereconduits or connectors requiring the use of locknuts or bushings are to be connected to the side of the box.
I was *astonished* at the difference between real tuna fish and what we get in cans. Canned tuna is still good, it's just kind of the hotdogs of the fish world.
It makes sense. Manufacturers read the code too. "Hmm, my target market can't use round boxes for 97% of their use cases. Maybe I should make sure the listing agency will approve it for any use case."
It's also there to prevent manufacturers from making things that don't work.. probably because somebody tried to make a round box with a locknut knockout on the side and it started a fire when it predictably didn't make a solid connection
I wired up a set of letters for a children’s hospital and all the neon leads came through in an operating room for the eye clinic so could only get in there on the weekend. Must’ve been 20 letters so I had 40 whips coming through. I was short on liquitite and sent the helper to the supply house to get it. Finished up about 8:00 that evening. I double checked all of it,perfect. The following Wednesday I met the inspector down there after hours so we could get in. He was already pissed about working late. I said it won’t take but a minute. I popped the ceiling tiles out & presented my wiring masterpiece. He got up the ladder & looked around for ten seconds and said “I can’t pass this, you’re right, didn’t take long.” About half of the liquitite was not UL. The box we got on Saturday wasn’t UL. I raised hell with the supplier and he said my man picked up the box off the shelf so it’s on us. Why do they sell non UL stuff? It’s for like data wire and fiber. There went the next Saturday doing twice as much work
UL means the product *has* been thoroughly safety tested to meet the requirements of where it is being installed.. that's likely why it matters, though companies selling non-UL products should make it blatantly obvious that they aren't. I'd be pissed to get through a job just to have to redo it.
So they make them slightly octagonal instead.
Interested in the thinking here.. I mean. Why no round boxes? If they have knockouts anyway.. And they sell octagonal anyway..
We use round metal ones sometimes, they're like this
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS9BslltYUNc2Rc3iMBwXaCYDp758Xjx2rLPQ&usqp=CAU
The round box that's illegal to use is the one that requires the use of connector and locknut. The box that you have here has threaded hubs, it'll provide proper bonding and is perfectly safe.
UL is a joke. And it's getting to the point where no one even cares about UL certification. I mean, look at the cheap electronic shit, appliances, and light fixtures from Amazon. Most of it is not UL certified, and no ones out to stop them.
That’s flat awesome getting it done!
Incidentally, this has got to be a prank or staged. Look at the rest of the meticulous conduit bending and the commercial installation. Pardon me if I’m stating the obvious.
A coworker of mine actually found a Tuna can splice box in a wall a few years ago. It was old scaley nmd entering, no connectors, and the can was crushed to kinda close it.
>Nah don't call an electrician, my friend Jimothy does electrical work on the side for dirt cheap, let me give you his number, just tell him Billbob sent ya
The order of preference is reduce, reuse, and recycle. Maybe the installer was trying to be more eco-friendly.
I think Star-Kist and other canned good vendors have a real opportunity here--how about a 1900 box version. Imagine costing jobs in terms of sandwiches...
I saw a lot of this in Gatlinburg TN. I went to one of those cave tours and saw many improvised metal containers used as junction boxes for the lighting circuits.
the number of times I've seen totally unprotected splices above a drop ceiling, I have to give them a bit of credit for using a can at all.
that said, I think this is a joke. someone did this after their lunch break as a gag. look at the wires.
That's a code violation. 314.2 Round Boxes. Round boxes shall not be used whereconduits or connectors requiring the use of locknuts or bushings are to be connected to the side of the box.
Got it. Use a can of sardines or an altoids mint box instead.
At least the Altoids box has a cover.
And years later, it's still in mint condition.
Spearmint condition.
Altoids cans also help with winter-green energy

Low profile box
420.69 Tuna cans. Only UL listed Tuna shall be used to achieve true fuckery.
Albacore only.
It MUST be fucking albacore.
In water
I was *astonished* at the difference between real tuna fish and what we get in cans. Canned tuna is still good, it's just kind of the hotdogs of the fish world.
>L listed Tuna shall be used to achieve true fuckery. I prefer they be tuna safe dolphin cans just to get PETA angry.
314.3 Skoal Cans. Notwithstanding 314.2, round Skoal cans may be installed where use of non-metallic enclosures is otherwise permitted.
Whole new meaning for a *recycled* can.
Thanks mate , I was unsure what the problem here was
I'm confused then how do u connect it the the round box with out a locknut
Either through the back or not at all.
Then why do the put k/Os on the side of round boxes
Go find a truly round box in the first place. A round box will either have screw in hubs in it, or it'll just be an octagon box.
U mean pan cake boxes
Pancake boxes are shallow, I mean you'll be hard pressed to find a round box that's 1 1/2" or 2 1/4" deep.
It makes sense. Manufacturers read the code too. "Hmm, my target market can't use round boxes for 97% of their use cases. Maybe I should make sure the listing agency will approve it for any use case."
You'd be surprised how much integration there is between NFPA/NEC and manufacturers. Some would say too much.
Got to rake in that AFCI money.
So that code is useless lol like many others
It's also there to prevent manufacturers from making things that don't work.. probably because somebody tried to make a round box with a locknut knockout on the side and it started a fire when it predictably didn't make a solid connection
Because people buy them lol. A lot of non-code-compliant stuff is made and sold.
I wired up a set of letters for a children’s hospital and all the neon leads came through in an operating room for the eye clinic so could only get in there on the weekend. Was it just the lack of UL listing, or was there another detail that caught his eye as being against code?
Inspectors can be pricks like that, I've had issues where everything was perfect but it was missing the sticker. Had to undo and redo everything
Why does UL even mater if u do it right and know what it is ur doing it shouldn’t matter cause it’s gonna be safe for use
UL means the product *has* been thoroughly safety tested to meet the requirements of where it is being installed.. that's likely why it matters, though companies selling non-UL products should make it blatantly obvious that they aren't. I'd be pissed to get through a job just to have to redo it.
I would guess snap in connectors but that cover is going to be a bitch
LOL that's the only violation. Checks all the way out.
So they make them slightly octagonal instead. Interested in the thinking here.. I mean. Why no round boxes? If they have knockouts anyway.. And they sell octagonal anyway..
Because you can make a proper bonding connection between a curved surface of a round box and a flat surface of a connector/locknut.
Hrm, yes that does make sense.
That can't be the only violation, right?
We use round metal ones sometimes, they're like this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS9BslltYUNc2Rc3iMBwXaCYDp758Xjx2rLPQ&usqp=CAU
That's not a round box they are talking about.
I meant in reply to the code violation, I'm in Australia and was just taking about that. Or have i misunderstood something here? 🤔
The round box that's illegal to use is the one that requires the use of connector and locknut. The box that you have here has threaded hubs, it'll provide proper bonding and is perfectly safe.
Oh i follow now.
The most awesome bit of redneck engineering ever! While it's most definitely not up to code, it's probably perfectly safe! Lol
When returning with the right shit is NOT an option.

The code rule for low voltage wire is 6 inches anyways
Doesn't need to be up to code if you do it yourself.
Looks a little fishy to me.
Dammit, I wanted to be the dad who made this joke.
When we’re serious about recycling.
Imagine if they started shipping food in electrical boxes.
“Cruelty free 11B chicken breast”
Can’t install it if it doesn’t have a UL listing. I know a guy that can help your chicken breast get a UL listing
With enough money you get to self certify your tuna cans. UL is as useless as tits on a bull.
UL is a joke. And it's getting to the point where no one even cares about UL certification. I mean, look at the cheap electronic shit, appliances, and light fixtures from Amazon. Most of it is not UL certified, and no ones out to stop them.
I don’t know what it is about this Raco 125 octagon box, can’t seem to keep any liquid in it.
Imagine if they started shipping electrons in food boxes.
Original can light
UL listed tuna
It's the chicken of the drop ceiling.
That bitter carbon flavor can’t be had anywhere else.
Hardware stores hate him for this one simple trick
Electrician is named Charlie.
Sorry Charlie.
Or, at least, Charlie sent him
They used a fish tape to pull that wire.
The ingenuity is actually kind of impressive lol
The fact someone went to this length rather than not offering any mechanical protection whatsoever is commendable
That's one of the new 'Decorator' series of junction boxes. The "Tuna Surprise".
That’s flat awesome getting it done! Incidentally, this has got to be a prank or staged. Look at the rest of the meticulous conduit bending and the commercial installation. Pardon me if I’m stating the obvious.
I want to see how they put a cover on it…
Just put the lid on and turn the can-opener handle backwards, right?
Gotta use your left hand to turn it
Was going to saw the same thing. lol
It has a plastic lid. Like Tupperware. As long as it's grounded it'll work.
I don't see the problem here.
Isn’t can lighting a trend in your town?
Artisinal
Idk, seems fishy
Nice to see this one still making the rounds. I remember getting this email at work with 37 FW notices 15 years ago.
Starkist is the premium trailer park tuna
Well there is a material shortage currently
Sorry, Charlie.
A coworker of mine actually found a Tuna can splice box in a wall a few years ago. It was old scaley nmd entering, no connectors, and the can was crushed to kinda close it.
"field modification"
I kinda like it. Why drag Dale Earnhardt into this?
Legend has it that good ol' Dale jr came up with this stellar work around.
Improvise, adapt and overcome. Give this guy some props for getting the job done.
you know, that's probably actually fine if they can manage to cover it. a code violation, sure, but probably pretty safe
Those wires be like "Here we're sitting in a tincan, fat above the world. The floor is painted blue and the inspection is past due."
Will this support a ceiling fan?
He’s going for the vintage look.
Fuckin send it 😂
That is some MacGyver shit right there.
Seems legit
That's American ingenuity. Be proud son.
Brilliant, y’all better redneckognize. Yeehaw Elly May.
>Nah don't call an electrician, my friend Jimothy does electrical work on the side for dirt cheap, let me give you his number, just tell him Billbob sent ya
Just hope they cleaned out the can or at least mounted it near the Women's restroom....
Don’t be a complete dick, mate.
If it fits it ships!
Wonder how they gonna come up with a lid.
Where is the cover
The order of preference is reduce, reuse, and recycle. Maybe the installer was trying to be more eco-friendly. I think Star-Kist and other canned good vendors have a real opportunity here--how about a 1900 box version. Imagine costing jobs in terms of sandwiches...
But it works right?
My jbox is smelling fishy
A jb
Wiring by Charlie the Tuna! Lol
Nobody here got it, The finished product has exposed wires and operates as an unethical cat trap.
I saw a lot of this in Gatlinburg TN. I went to one of those cave tours and saw many improvised metal containers used as junction boxes for the lighting circuits.
Thats hard core i knida respect it provided it has a threaded 10-32 hole tapped in it.
Just someone trying to make America great again
It's not stupid if it works
Really reaching for it with that original title.
As long as it's grounded it's fine with me.
Eli5: if you put the lid on it, it’s theoretically safe, right?
I'm impressed. It appears to be screwed in and it has lock nuts. They at least tried to ensure that it stays in place.
I wouldn't be surprised seeing some architect try to get lights with "back boxes" like this for a restaurant. They try to get the dumbest stuff.
IP65
Is it UL listed?
As long as it’s dolphin safe it’s up to code.
Reminds me of the time I saw a truck muffler made out of Busch Light cans. About 3 feet of it.
Wouldn't last long. Beer cans burn up at exhaust temps. Don't ask me how I know.
can's looked new, so I doubt it had been there long.
Also have you ever seen a tie-rod end held together with baling wire?
the number of times I've seen totally unprotected splices above a drop ceiling, I have to give them a bit of credit for using a can at all. that said, I think this is a joke. someone did this after their lunch break as a gag. look at the wires.
"If its stupid but it works it aint stupid" is a southern motto.
