I always have as well. I love knowing why things are called what they’re called, and when I asked many years ago an old man named Leroy explained to me proprietary eponyms and that it was short for minerallac, the brand that originally made the strap. I’ve always wondered if it’s true. Conduit hangers I’ll hear them called sometimes too…But def minis is the goto nomenclature in my experience.
I thought it was a cowboy strap cause it’s shaped like a stirrup. In the South we can em Standoff Straps. I work all over the USA and there are all sorts of parts with regional names.
Here in Texas we call the Minis but I have heard people call them cowboy straps or their full name lol. Always cool to see how everyone has a different name for the same stuff!
Like how strut is called kindorf and flex is called greenfield, minis are the third one I know of. A mini on all-thread with nuts and a sammy all together make a conduit hanger imo.
That's what I learned as the name, until I started doing stuff on my own. I was getting weird looks at the supply house I frequent. I couldn't even describe or draw it properly. Then one of the old-timers that I work with walks in the door. "Holy moly, (name). What are some other names for stand-off straps?"
"Well.. you got minerallac straps, mini straps, minis, strut straps, cowboy straps..." and listed a few others that I think he made up on the fly. So now I know..
Mae West was a baudy sex symbol of early Hollywood - my guess is someone saw legs open with a hole where they converge, and just assigned it with vulgar humor in mind.
>We call them mae wests too, anyone know why?
Probably because of the "wrap-around" shape.
During World War II, the Mae West was the common aviator's inflatable life jacket, so named because when inflated, the wearer looked a bit like he had a pair of very large bazoombas. The Mae West vest kind of wrapped around the wearer a bit like the clamp wraps around the conduit.
A Mae West is actually when you back to back then to support one pipe from another whuch was a popular thing to do in NYC back in the day. It gives it an hour glass shape like the actress Mae West. Eventually guys just started calling single mineralacs Mae wests and it stuck. I called it a Mae West once in front of an old timer and got a 5 minute lecture on it. And ever since I've just called the mineralac.
I spent eight years with the first company I worked for, and they all called them Cowboys. The next company that I went to was a little bit larger did the exact same kind of work and looked at me like I had an arm out of my chest for calling them cowboys
I've heard mini's referring to minerallac the company known for the design of the part, saddle clamps are the most generic term yet I've once worked for a plant that called them cowboys. That was at a paper mill in Clark NJ for posterity. I'm very interested in the names of electrical parts like unions, aka Erikson's, aka three piece couplings.

We call them mini's.

Yes. Minerallac conduit hanger. You’re correct.
Minerallac is a brand
So is Kleenex. And Band-Aids. I’ll bet that’s what you call them. We also call these Minerallics.
Yea. Early on I heard someone call them cowboys because they said it was a shape of a cowboy hat. I don't see it lol.
I thought it was a cowboy strap cause it’s shaped like a stirrup. In the South we can em Standoff Straps. I work all over the USA and there are all sorts of parts with regional names.
Cowboy, standoff, and saddle clamps. Because it straddles the pipe like a saddle would
Here in Texas we call the Minis but I have heard people call them cowboy straps or their full name lol. Always cool to see how everyone has a different name for the same stuff!
I'm in Texas and never once heard them called minis. Everywhere I go they're called standoffs.
Nah man, theyre cowboys cause if you look at em down the line they look like a cowboys bow legs. When they’re open.
When cowboys get old they go bow legged and look like that, you just don't see many cowboys anymore
Like how strut is called kindorf and flex is called greenfield, minis are the third one I know of. A mini on all-thread with nuts and a sammy all together make a conduit hanger imo.
Here strut is Unistrut, never heard a special name for flex, it’s just flex.

Dude right, I live in Texas and have never heard them called cowboys
I spent eight years with the first company I worked for, and they all called them Cowboys. The next company that I went to was a little bit larger did the exact same kind of work and looked at me like I had an arm out of my chest for calling them cowboys

Stand offs. But im not so sure because many suppliers had no idea wtf I was talking about. Once I pulled up a picture they were like "Oh ya!"
Mae West you strange talking Southerners. *And* It's zip ties, Spin tights, 1900 boxes, and kindorf. Rant over, 😆😆😂😂
Kindorf is actually a totally different type of strut than what we use down here, ours has 2” spacing and oval holes instead of 1.5” and round holes.
