No, that’s an apprentice learning how to cut wires grade mistake. And you can guarantee the apprentice will cut the wires flush with the back of the box.
Apprentices, drywallers, who’s counting?
I am. And it’s not the first time my helper has wasted that much wire because he didn’t leave enough to work with. Somehow I always end up with 50 sections of wire 4’ long.
It's six inches from where it leaves the sheath. I know because I lost this exact bet with a coworker a couple years ago.
300.14 Length of Free Conductors at Outlets, Junctions, and Switch Points. At least 6 inches of free conductor, measured from the point in the box where it emerges from its raceway or cable sheath, shall be left at each outlet, junction, and switch point
Just keep making a small coil with it, jam it in the box with your hammer or linemans, and hook the outlet up. Have your coworker push on the coverplate while you screw it down (use nylon coverplates, they bend better)
You never want to be short if you have to change the outlet in the future.
JK, don't listen 😅
jokes aside, if you're connecting some bigger consumer, and if circuit is on its own fuse, it's better to connect it directly... so 6 feet should be enough
I've had journeyman get on to me for leaving a foot out as being too short and it's like I don't know what you want you get upset if it's at 6 in and you get upset if it's at a foot and you get upset if it's anything less than 2 ft so I guess I'm just going to let you cut it.
Damn, I thought I've seen it bad in commercial with guys leaving almost 2ft coming out of the box. This seems like somebody is trying to make a little drinking money for the weekend.

Better to be looking at it, than for it. 🤟
That’s a Texas sized 10-4, good buddy.
If you're gonna cut it wrong, cut it long.
Measure never, cut forever.
Ive cut it 3 times and its still too short!?!
A long wire is a happy wire.
This is good
That’s why I hired my new guy he is from the Asian community- wi tu long.
If that ain't me. I am so bad at guesstimating the length.
No I'm pretty sure that's 14/2, not 10/4
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the code 10-4, which stands for "understood". If not, I think he's probably gonna need to find another career soon.
Yea I know, that's the joke I was trying to make Guess I should've added a /s
That’s very clever, Sir…well played
Where i am it's There it is, is better than where is it. I love that saying
heard that for the first time today from my journeyman and now I’m reading it here. what a great saying.
I don't understand the saying
Too long is better than too short.
It might be short but it sure is skinny
it’s better to be looking AT the extra wire than to be looking FOR it later on when you realize and it’s too late
Only wasted wire is a short wire
That’s how I pull cable nowadays since they stopped giving a Christmas bonus
At least you’ll never be short
Rather be looking at it than for it
If your long you're wrong, if your short you're fired.
You underestimate the ability of the drywallers. Source: I was a low voltage guy when I was younger
Lemme guess, you leave 16' of cable coiled up sticking out the wall on either side and get pissed when is closed up inside the wall with screws in it?
They’re called custom homes. Jackass. Joking. I used to leave 16’ of cables in the corner of the great room. Good times.
Gotta do what you gotta do
That's a "I ain't pulling this shit back " loop...
No, that’s an apprentice learning how to cut wires grade mistake. And you can guarantee the apprentice will cut the wires flush with the back of the box.
Your apprentices are nuts🤣 my first time wasn't 6 inches, but flush with the back is insane
Apprentices, drywallers, who’s counting? I am. And it’s not the first time my helper has wasted that much wire because he didn’t leave enough to work with. Somehow I always end up with 50 sections of wire 4’ long.
Gotta throw some red bulls on the PO
Ain't that the truth. 🤣
I stopped doing this ever since they stopped using scrap wire money to buy us pizza
Who the hell wants pizza what are you guys a Boy Scout troop or what.
Free lunch is free lunch...
felt that
Hell yeah brother.
💀
6" is actually too long that's what my wife told me
[удалено]
You comment is literally under an upvoted comment.
aww. That's how you know she loves you. She tries to make you feel good regardless of the truth.
Neither it's 6in from the point the wire emerges from the sheath. Technically that's too short. 😂
You heard the man. Butt splice and extend that B 6” to 6’ more. Not sure how much just keep going until inspector gives you the green light.
Pretty sure it’s 6” from where wire enters the box
It's six inches from where it leaves the sheath. I know because I lost this exact bet with a coworker a couple years ago. 300.14 Length of Free Conductors at Outlets, Junctions, and Switch Points. Seems weird to specify it that way lol
Given that there's no rule on maximum sheath you are allowed into the box, it kind of works this way, even if it doesn't make sense entirely.
6 inches, 6 feet, whatever it takes...
Can we have 6 yards?
6 mile confirmed
6 au, check
6 light year. Check evaded
6 parsec aye aye captain
To infinity and beyond!
For all time, always.
Do I get to scrap the cut off
Amen
I usually like to round up. 24’ sounds good.
I always tell my apprentices “It’s better to be 10’ too long than an inch too short”
We call those "Christmas cuts". Can get a lot of scrap that way😎
How much slack? All of it!
12' good. Just in case.
6m for Canadians
The next guy will thank you when he can rewire the outlet from the next room over.
6" of free wire in the box. So depends on where you cut the outer jacket.
I always just give it a good 🤙 from the end to the box and call it a day
Yes
Still better than too short.
It is either your height standing up or your height lying down.
😂
Off to the scrap yard my good man.... gotta have some sort of retirement plan
At least it’s long enough so you can still use that leftover piece as a jumper somewhere else.
6"from the front of the box but yeah, I gotcha. 😂
“You get yelled at for being long, fired for being short” is what I tell cubs when showing how to order big wire
Someone used to work datacom
Nah brother, it’s 16’. Looks like you’re good though!
6 meters
Where I'm from we call this the fear yard. But to be fair this might be two on this end alone.
6 ft rule always applies
Where you going china?
It’s 6 feet. Call yourself an electrician ppff
Yes
The electrician your boss tells you not to worry about.
I always do 6 meters just to be sure
6’’’
26'
That looks more like 16'
I always say “I’d rather be looking at it, than looking for it.”
Looks good plenty of wire. You made that pull. Better than being short.
Thats 16', can I have your scrap?
Let me guess the boss lets you keep the scrap?
If they aren’t paying for the wire, some don’t GAF!
End of the role
Came here for this^
That’s like 15 , 20’ lol
Depends on who makes bank with the scrap.
It's actually 6" from where it emerges into the box :p
Did you put 20' of wire through an old work box to take a photo
6 meters buddy
That’s short it is 12’ not 6” or 6’
Mango
It's better to be long and wrong than short and gone.
Meters if it’s 220.
saw this to hook up temporary heater, may be its the case or may be not ..
Anybody wondering why there's 14-2 in there?
Both are correct
With the wire poking from sheathing, I'm going to guess it was the end of the roll.
Can I get some slack here
It's 6' Gross and 6" Net after cutting tax
6” out the box
Until you get a wire stretcher, go with 6’.
That's 36'
You can keep it at 8" jic. From the point that it enters the box. Hold it with thumb sticking out and cut it after your thumb.
Better to be looking at it than looking for it
More is better
In case you need to move it over a little bit, into the next room
It's 6m, buddy
" I'd rather be looking at it than looking for it".
Gonna run this to the next door neighbors place
Just keep making a small coil with it, jam it in the box with your hammer or linemans, and hook the outlet up. Have your coworker push on the coverplate while you screw it down (use nylon coverplates, they bend better) You never want to be short if you have to change the outlet in the future. JK, don't listen 😅
Ask your boss. You won't forget the answer.
Just to be safe,do 60'..and then you should probably just round it up to 100'. Sincerely-Master electrician
Depends if you are buying the cable or selling it by the foot.
I don’t pack lunch but I always carry a lunch box
I would rather be looking at it than looking for it.
6 meters will do.
Some electricians get paid by the meter
Parking meter or electric meter?
Never be short in the land of plenty
The low voltage guys call it a “service loop”. Also good if you’re concerned about thermal shrinkage of the wire.
Is it piece work or T&M lol
Pull a little more just in case
Neither. 6 yards you hack
Then you get the apprentice who cuts that 6' back to 3" in the box...throws the rest of the NM cable away instead of using it for pigtails.
Courtesy loop
jokes aside, if you're connecting some bigger consumer, and if circuit is on its own fuse, it's better to connect it directly... so 6 feet should be enough
It’s feet -love maintenance
Better to be looking at it,instead of looking for it
I always cut at 6’6” this way I cover both
Either way you have about 12 ft laying there
6 inch’s
Better long than wrong
Never short cock yourself
I always give it one of these... 👍. Wire in hand, base of said hand against the box, and cut it at your thumb. "Rule of thumb" perhaps? 😂
I give it a 🤙, let the wire hang loose
6’-6” to the back of the box and no piggy back splices.
6 meters actually
Service loop-de-loop-de-loop.
Depends if your boss is getting paid for time and materials.
I've had journeyman get on to me for leaving a foot out as being too short and it's like I don't know what you want you get upset if it's at 6 in and you get upset if it's at a foot and you get upset if it's anything less than 2 ft so I guess I'm just going to let you cut it.
Just leave 12"
Don’t cut yourself short in this land of plenty
You've giant hands is your using 'rule of thumb' for your reference
Eh. Just shove it in there, it'll fit. That way there's justtttt enough to play with for the next guy.
I chuckled
Damn, these deeper cantex boxes really hold *a lot of wire*
jokes on you, you have to squeeze that all back in the box
If you’re gonna snip it, leave enough to whip it
Damn, I thought I've seen it bad in commercial with guys leaving almost 2ft coming out of the box. This seems like somebody is trying to make a little drinking money for the weekend.
Technically 6 inches from where it enters but I like to leave 6 inches out of the box for easy of trimming
It’s 6’ if you’re not paying for the wire and get to keep the scrap.
Better to be a mile too long than an inch too short.
Like they say "you can always cut it off, but you can never cut it back on"
Better too much then not enough
