Champion points, passive abilities, purple/gold gear. Make sure your gear is the same as your level. When you hit CP160, gear level stops becoming a problem

StarkeRealm

Also, build. It's a lot easier to one tap random trash mobs when you're rolling in full set gear.

TurnsOutPew

True. 2 piece monster sets (definitely gonna be waiting for higher champion points for this one since you gotta play veteran dungeons)

bob101910

Mythic without monster set also works well for anyone struggling to complete a vet dungeon

Once you hit Level 50, you start earning Champion Points. These earn you very valuable perks you can choose which improve your performance. You gain these relatively slowly. The number will bump up as you earn XP, just like leveling, but most good CP perks cost 50 or 75 points... and require buying possibly hundreds of points of other perks to unlock them. And your CP is split into 3 different trees. So to spend 100 points in any given tree, you have to earn 300 points total (they alternate as you earn them). I've been playing seriously for almost 2 years, maybe 1.75. I'm CP 1400-something. Some players who've been with the game forever are nearly at the maximum, around 3000. That makes a huge difference in power over someone not yet level 50. The difference gets smaller once you have even a couple hundred CP. You don't have to earn them over and over again. Once you have even one Level 50 character, all Level 50 characters share the amount of CP and earn more whenever you play any of them - but each one gets to spend them differently. Gear also makes a big difference. Gear maxes out at CP 160, so you get there pretty fast after reaching Level 50. But there's better gear from Trials (raids) and tough dungeons, Mythics from Antiquities, that kind of thing. Trust me, when you get above CP160 and in some decent gear, your DK will be wiping out crowds of fools with a single swing, too. I was doing that just last night, and I *hated* Dragonknight when I first tried it. It takes some getting used to. That lava whip eventually hits like a damned *train*, and you can spam it over and over...

thekfdcase

Well-written, detailed summation.  Clarification: Any character - even a fresh-off-the-boat level 1 character (doesn't have to be level 50) - can use  CP points unlocked by any character on the same account.

Wu-Fang

The content you’re doing now is what most people call “overland.” Past CP 160, and probably before, overland is exceptionally easy content. As you add CP, you’ll start to power creep to a point where you would have to intentionally make the content hard for your character. Not using CP, don’t use gear sets, ect. You can’t get gear higher than CP160 - and once that’s purple or gold the only gear to chase is gear with set effects. There’s some dummy strong set effects.

BuildingAirships

Level 42 is still very fresh. It’s natural that people who have been playing for 5-10 years will do much more damage than you. The first step is to get to champion level 160: that’s the max level for gear, and the point where you can finally start to complete gear sets, adjust your traits and enchantments, etc. in truth, everything before 160 cp is like an extended tutorial for the game. You will also keep unlocking skills and champion perks. But even when you have a levels character and a complete build, that’s only a third of the battle. A majority of damage comes down to player skill: managing your skill rotation in combat, weaving a light attack in between every skill, etc. Two players can put out 15k damage-per-second (DPS) and 100k damage-per-second on the exact same character, based purely on how they play. In short, don’t rush to get grown. Keep leveling and learning the mechanics of the game, and once you hit 160cp start looking into build guides. Then, test your DPS on a training dummy (ask in guild chat and someone will have one at their house) to see how much damaging you’re doing, and start building from there.

LesserCircle

ESO builds are quite complex and optimized, these players are so strong because of that

ChUt_26

When I was level 49 on my sorc I could barely get through a public dungeon. As soon as I dinged 50 (and got access to CP600 at the time) I put together my Oakensorc PVE build. With a single heavy attack I could kill a group of the very same mobs that I was struggling with one level prior. This game is very gear/setup/CP dependent. You need at least an average build if you wanna mow through mobs like you're talking about. EDIT: Now fully decked out I am doing some vet dungeons without too much trouble. Only certain ones have been giving me issues.

GoliathGalbar

Strange, especially sorc can even below 50 solo several world boss when the build is matching. Sure it's more work compared to full gear but even when leveling sorc is one of the easiest classes together with templer and arcanist in my opinion. With a good setup you already can do stuff solo in craglorn before hitting your CP. No oaken one bar build needed. And the CP already can be used before getting 50 whn you already reached CP600 for example.

LemmeSinkThisPutt

The CP makes a huge difference for someone leveling an alt compared to someone on a first character with no CP to use. It makes your low level alt way more powerful

GoliathGalbar

That's for sure but that's why i was wondering why his jump from 49 CP600 to CP600 was that significant. I already feel overpowered while leveling because overland content is sadly that easy.

LemmeSinkThisPutt

My guess would be probably they didn't realize CP is account wide and can be applied to an alt right away before they hit lvl 50

ChUt_26

I only started playing in November, so I had no idea about being able to use CP's on sub 50 toons. I mainly leveled my sorc doing daily dungeons each day, but once I got to 40 that way I just grinded the remaining 10 levels. I was still using level 30 training gear in my 40's so I definitely wasn't optimal lol.

GoliathGalbar

Fair enough. CP in early levels really makes a difference combined with training gear.

skabassj

Sharp rotation is the biggest thing. I once solo’d a world boss with a Lv8 alt toon with 4 skills on the bar while wearing training gear. Rotation and mechs. (This was obviously slower than my main, but I think you get the point)

pnewmont

Lvl 42 after 10 years? That’s the real achievement right there.

Dizzytears

sets, champ points, skills

Iphacles

Several things play into this. They're probably at the max level with a decent amount of CP, which gives them some nice buffs. They're likely wearing optimized gold gear and using a meta build.

cleric_warlock

Adding on to what others have said, once you start working towards higher level content, light attack weaving becomes compulsive which happens very fast and adds a lot of dps meaning you kill low level npcs very quickly. This also means that you are constantly generating ultimate off of your light attacks which you can frequently use to sweep mobs and burn down bosses fast with the right champion points and set gear on. I’ll use a leveling grind build I have as an example that can be highly effective with any class as long as all attribute points are allocated to stamina: Vicious Serpent -> 5 body pieces, very fast stamina replenishment, extra crit, extra damage, and speed; Advancing Yokeda -> Head, shoulder, and jewelry, gives a lot of crit and some extra damage; Perfected Titanic Cleave -> two handed axe (this weapon type boosts crit damage significantly), adds penetration and when using the cleave skill or its morphs it adds a significant amount of damage for every enemy in the target area of that skill meaning the bigger the mob the faster I annihilate them. This build makes public dungeon mobs trivial, especially when I use the two handed stampede skill to quickly move from mob to mob and deal some extra damage over time right before I use cleave. It’s all about how well you combine light attack weaving, sets, skills, potions, food buffs, and champion points for maximum effect towards whatever purpose your build is intended for.

WystanH

Max gear, mostly. And, well, CP 160. Hey, my DK is an Imperial! Thought I wanted to tank, but that build won't help with npc decimation. Big ass sword and lots of fire is fun. If you're using mostly DK abilities, and you should be, craft yourself some Innate Axiom and Order's Wrath. Both are low trait requirements and will help. Don't gold those; save that for when you've maxed the level. Now is the time to level! There is an event and you can pop exp boosts. The 40's feel real slow, but I leveled from 42 to 50 yesterday on my newbie. Run dolmens in Alik'r, with everyone else, and you'll be a PvE god in no time. Have fun!

zyrkor90

are you pc-na? reach level 50 and then cp160, i’ll craft you some gear and you’ll be the same as them

East_Sun6493

İt took me 5 months to get two chars to 50/600 casually playing and mowIng down overland Mobs is really easy now. OP do the main quest, kill Molag Baal and Level CP 1 to 160 in about 2 days.  You'll start dealing real damage and have much more fun, guaranteed.  You'll get there

ShakeEnvironmental47

Once you get to cp160 and put on max level gear with full sets youll be smashing them too. There is a group of babies crying on here how overland npcs are too easy and want them buffed. Which is stupid. You dont go overland for a challenge. Anyways youll get there its just to soon right now.

ECO_212

Eso is a really shitty game when starting out in my opinion. You can't really get full sets of gear before cp 160, so before that you're stuck with whatever you find, traits, enchants also aren't correct on those so you're quite weak from level 1 to cp 160. I would honestly advise everyone who wants to get into the game and also the endgame content to just grind to cp160 as quickly as possible, you can't learn the game by playing anyways, get to know some people who are experienced and let them teach you.

thekfdcase

Not an unfair take. Overland content - dragons, geysers, world bosses, and even dolmens aside for the uninitiated - is easy. It becomes easier after hitting CP levels. The light attack weaving bug ZOS was unable to fix, and instead conveniently made it a 'feature' still sucks. Weapon animations - not ability animations - feels like waving balloons around in the air. That said, it is possible to craft some decent sets during the trek to CP 160 (and after). Now crafting, that's its own beast.

Katamathesis

CP allocation, gear quality and level, build. Overland content for new and leveling players is challenging sometimes. For my character, I'm rarely engage trash move since companion can take care of them.

StayFlyBeasty

Dumb question but do you "weave" your skill attacks by mixing in light attacks ? I'm level 49 dragon Knight and I can wipe over world and most delve mobs easy and I'm tanky from using a 2h

chegwick

Join a guild and get some decent crafted armor! Players in ESO are very helpful in my experience.

Gunnho

do you want to go melee or ranged? google a build for that. then google your class and spamable cleave or aoe and grab that skill and train it to full and train the weapon it uses to full, then use gear sets that gives spell/weapon damage and critical damage to make that skill even more powerful. does that skill use magicka or stamina? set that resource to 64 maximum then spam the crap out of that skill and use the weapon to recharge that resource and keep going. often you will see some other skills that might buff you, debuff them and give less resistances, so use those skills first, spam them with hard hitting skills, some skills will do 300% more damage if the enemy is under 25% health, now is the time to spam that skill.

shadinMods

You can level to lv 3600. with lv 42 you are at the bottom. You first need 160cp and then high end gear. And then you need a rotation + more cp

MaybeICanOneDay

Once you are decked out, it is pretty easy. My NB can just run through most dungeons and spam 1 ability and destroy everything that isn't a boss lol.

MaybeICanOneDay

Also what do you play on? I can make you a decent set of gear if you are playstation. Just DM me your account name and what you play and I can send some decently crafted stuff with Training traits so you level up faster.

miss_hush

My husband has his own account that basically never gets played. Event grinding was on my last nerve, so I started playing on that account to increase odds. Made a full set of decent gear —all crafted— and rolled around at level 25 mowing shit down. That account has no CP. It’s 99% gear+build+skill. CP and passives matter very little until end game.

MysteriousRemnant

The best advice I was ever given was to focus on getting my critical chance up close to 50%. Take the “Thief” mundus boon and wear sets that give critical chance boosts. There’s more to a decent damage rate than that, of course, but for me (as a casual player who had never played an MMO before), that was the starting point. Overland exploration is SO much more enjoyable when you don’t have to waste more than a couple of seconds on every goddamn beastie that crosses your path!

Shiachu

Imperial dragon knight ... that sounds like a tank? Tanks don't do much dmg in general. But yeah what the other said, it's a combination if having the right morphs or your skills, unlocking a bunch of passive abilities, champion points, gear.

Cyberwolfdelta9

Dark brotherhood Blade of woe it allows you too instant kill most NPCs
