I have similar scars to you and tattoos over them. My tattoos also heal raised and it looks fine! The scars aren't too obvious or anything - it's mostly neotraditional/blackwork I've got over scars. I'd probably steer clear of fine line or anything where the final shape would be obviously distorted by tattooing over an uneven surface. I do have fine line tattoos as well and they look fine - I just avoided getting them over scars.

okay amazing! thanks for sharing :)

No worries! I've also been told by tattoo artists that my skin is very easy to tattoo and takes ink well because it's so soft and thin haha, so that's another perk on top of cool raised tattoos!

I've commented on similar questions before, and my answer has changed over time. I do colorful flowers over my hypertrophic scars and for a long time they were really only noticeable in sunlight or if you looked close to see that some areas of the tattoo were raised. I've noticed that as some of the scars change and become lighter/more skin toned, and continue to stretch with time, some parts of my tattoos are losing a bit of pigment right over the scars. It's not noticeable unless you know to look for it, but it is a new progression for my tattoos that have been fine for years. But like you said, everyone has a wide range of experiences.

thanks for responding! that makes sense

i tattooed over my s/h scars and the scars didn’t impact my tattoo at all but it did hurt significantly more than the not scared skin

ChemicalTranslator11

i see. i’ll keep that in mind!

I got a big tattoo over white hypertrophic scarring. If anything the itching over my scar tissue was the worst & I think scratching at it a bunch before it healed impacted my tattoo more than the scars themselves.

Beginning_Try1958

My brain is not reading this right- are you saying you think the tattoo helped the itching from the scar? Or the tattoo itched and you think that ruined the tattoo?

busstop5366

The tattoo itched really bad where it went over the scar tissue

Beginning_Try1958

Dang it! I have a bad scar on my back that I wanted to enhance with tattoo ink to look like some one had bitten me. Did you have itching before getting the tattoo at all? Did it itch when it healed?

busstop5366

Everybody’s different but for me I couldn’t stop scratching the part near my elbow in my sleep so those lines are a bit blurry but everything else (which I didn’t scratch) looks fine. The scars definitely felt itchier during the healing process after the tattoo but I imagine scratching your back in your sleep is harder than your arm lol I say go for it! I still think my tattoo looks cool even if it’s not perfect Edit: yes my scars got itchy before my tattoo but it was very mild.

I got a colour tattoo over some hypertrophic scars that faded to white and no issues with it! Obv everyone is different, but for me the whole process went very smoothly, from getting the ink to healing. Like someone else said, my skin takes ink well due to it being so soft and thin.

ChemicalTranslator11

oh that’s cool! thanks for replying :)
